  • Taking the old XR250R to race against the latest and greatest. In this video I restored an old XR250R to racing condition. New wheel bearings, tires, suspension, and 32mm carb swap. Raced at the Glen Helen 6 Hour Endurance race, solo in the ironman class.

      David C good riding. buy a drz 400 e. Do some suspension work and go for it. You ride really well and are proof that it’s about the rider not the bike. Especially these days where they are all good, the bikes that is.

    • @GeneralNOH
      @GeneralNOH 4 роки тому +7

      @@eyesthatseewillsee7457 Depends on what riding you want to do. The KDX250 was never really a success and has its issues. However; a KDX220/200 will handle better and make similar or more power than the average XR400 whilst still weighing less than the XR250.
      On the other hand The XRs have amazing tractor torque and are bombproof, they will lug up anything, you don't have to rev them as hard and they will do road speeds all day long and use less fuel doing it (No mixing gas either). Worth mentioning the KDX is also very torquey and luggable for a 2 stroke and is probably the most reliable, low maintenance 2 stroke ever made.
      You can't go wrong with an XR or a KDX. If you want to do enduro/technical stuff the KDX is an easy winner, if you want to do more open trails or dual-sport it, XR wins. Both bikes have cult followings and are getting more expensive day by day (for good reason).
      Both have heaps of aftermarket. The KDX is quite easy to get more power out of with simple bolt-ons and jetting, the XRs not so much but they respond well to big bore kits.
      When I'm finished cleaning up my KDX I will be getting an XR400 for dual-sport/adventure or a DRZ400 which is also a great option but not quite as good as the XR offroad and even heavier.

      @@leamartintorres look up www.polacomotos.com.br these guys are fanatical about the XR250R, CRF250F, and CRF250F... Also, honda does make an XR450R air cooled bike witch is so awesome but its not available in the USA where I live. We have the CRF line up of trail bikes up and then the CRF line up blends into liquid cooled high compression bikes which I'm not a fan of.

    • @justonpreble4083
      @justonpreble4083 4 роки тому

      @@leamartintorres I bought two brand new XR250R here in the USA. 1 in 1993 and 1 in 2005. Both had rear disc brakes. Those bikes were awesome trail bikes. Suspension was lacking if you are into motocross but in the desert and mountains those bikes dominate...
      The tornado you speak of is not sold in the USA but might share some parts but sounds like the XR250R befpre it was discontinued in the USA was a little more specifically tailored to hard core desert and mountain Enduro racer requirements in the USA. It was lacking on Power for some riders which is why the XR400R bike was sold in the USA for a few years but was ultimately discontinued also. The XR650L is still sold here but it's super heavy... But it's bullet proof.
      I love Honda but feel they have neglected the next generation of riders. Also I fond it hard to believe its cheaper for honda to make a nike with drum brakes vs superior disc brakes. Decisions like that make people so disappointed.
      Also where is Honda R&D on making electric dirt bikes like KTM. They could buy batteries from TESLA and make a killer line up for all ages.

    Fun experience there. Haven’t raced since 95 and it was the Chaparrall 6 hour at Glen Helen. Like you, I experienced mechanical issues, in my case they started at lap three.
    My power valve actuator unscrewed on my YZ 250. What happened after that was inconsistent opening of the valve which made it turn on like a rocket. Was able to salvage a third place but in the back of my mind I know I could’ve done much better had the power valve been functioning properly.
    Thanks for sharing your experience I enjoyed it. Obviously we all learn each time we enter a race like that. The main point is to always have fun. I had fun watching your video. cheers take care

Wacked plates on and rode it home lights and all working. It went good got up to 100 k/hr anyways. I used to have a 96 xr 400 with a 440 big bore kit, going back 10 years now, it had a trail tech digital dash, yoshi slip on pipe and renthal fat bars. Went 160k/hr or 100 mile and hour. As a kid we had the 1982 xr250r fun bike loads of power. Later on in life I bought the mighty 1985 xr350r single carburetor. I had to get some custom work done to the intake boot due to the old one was fried. I was 3rd owner of the bike and I will say the xr350 is a monster. I took on a drz400 and flat out smoked the Suzuki in 6th gear. My top speed was 110 mph.

    Love your tire selection method. Has worked for me every time. Unless the race restrictions demand a F.I.M. certified tyre (for road usage in some enduro stages).

    Watching this, I almost feel like someone needs to make an animated movie about how you rescue a sad old Rusted motorcycle wasting away in a Junk Yard and race it... and Win... Kind of like the movie cars or toy story where we get to see that these old motorcycles have a personality and heart and worth.

    Another fine video! That is some great riding, especially on an old XR. I've got one of those, and I can attest that it is not made for what you put that one through. They are great trail bikes, but the suspension is really too weak for all of those big jumps. Excellent job wringing every little bit of performance out of the old girl.

    I bought a 1983 IT490 from a buddy for $300. Put a couple more hundred in it and raced vintage class in hare scrambles. Vet 40 plus (senior) also raced this class. A lot of those guys were pretty fast. It really frustrated guys on new $10k bikes getting passed by a crappy ass IT490. I've since upgraded to a 95 CR500. Anyway, I love your attitude and riding motto! Keep twisting that throttle.

    Dude.. you built a bike in a week that was older than most people in the race that we're riding brand new bikes . That in itself is legendary! I own my xr because of you so I'll be wanting one of those shirts . I look forward to see what you do to it next, mine is leaking a little oil but I just keep topping it up and it's fine..haha the xr way . I'd be very tempted to do to mine as you do to yours in the future so when you do a vid list your parts and jetting . Cheers buddy.

    Aye I got this 97 xr250 I’ve had the thing for going on like 7 years bike was mint when I got it now it’s about clapped but the motor went perfect. I ran the piss out of that bike and it never let me down had it apart and piston and all looked fine no deep scoring and I found out it was a 277cc kit. Best bike made

    I've been riding an 03 since it was brand new. Great to see your level of enthusiasm for the old XRs. You picked the right XR, unless you're Scott Summers the big one is too much, and the 400 is a top heavy pig. Looking forward to your next installment.

    I'm pretty impressed. You did a lot in a little time. Especially a carb switch. That was a big bite to take right before a 6 hour race. Finishing a off road race that long is an achievement on a bike that runs right. You did it compensating for a floppy foot peg and sticking floats. I think you can take a little more credit for your finish than you are giving yourself

    I raced an 1990 XR250 in motocross against 250 2 strokes back in the day. After getting 2nd in the first moto the guy lined up on the gate beside me for the second moto commented that I sure could ride that 600. I informed him that he got beat by an XR250 and he replied, “you mean the girls trail bike?!?!”. He just hung his head in shame. 😂

    I’m 71 years old, raced WR360, WR 390, and WR430’s in the day, and a few years ago bought a mechanic owned 1996 XR400R. What a hoot! My WR430 was the best Husky I ever raced. I wish now I would have been on the XR400R instead. My racing days are over, but my woods riding isn’t. I thoroughly enjoyed the video!
