- Took the 1982 SP500 out for some racing action at Glen Helen. Raced it in the ironman class at the 6 Hour Endurance Race. I wanted to know if this old 500cc engine would be more at home in the scrap yard or on the race course. There was only one way to find out!

Literally helped me realize I ought to keep this 05 Crf250r and just put some new suspension on it.
When I was a kid racing jrs in scrambles in 1976 in South Australia there was a bloke in A grade who rode a 500cc CCM . this thing had a 12'' long x 1 1/2 '' diam exhaust, no muffler but man you could hear that thing from 2 miles away. He was a big dude and he looked like he was riding a mini bike. By hell that thing had some torque. I think if you do some suspension work and get the right gearing you would wipe the floor with your bike. People did some big things on older bikes don't under estimate them. People have to learn you don't always need the latest and greatest. You did well representing the older stuff. Well done.

Oh man, this is so cool! I'm glad you got it done and the ole girl made it! This really makes me want to get back into the thumper game! I have a bunch of TT500 stuff, but I've really been eying an XR600!
I was a Yamaha and Kawasaki tech and test rider at dealerships and race shops for most of my career. Let me tell you this is the kinda real world testing and results that I'd like to see. No scripted bits and skits. No unrealistic claims of power and costs. No click bait bs to get views. No statements about "how to compete for cheap and easy". Just a proposed question and a real world test. Ferkin excellent man. Knocked it out of the park. That engine would probably do pretty rad at a flat track too.

Absolutely amazing, kicking ass on old clunker breaking KTM hearts. Got an XL600 here, might have to look for an SP to sit next to it (and an XR600) (and an XT500)
Old bikes are great fun to ride. Modern bikes are way more capable than most people require and most people will exhaust themselves trying to get the absolute maximum out of them. Old bikes can be ridden at their limits pretty easily so you can relax and enjoy the ride a bit more.

That looked like a lot of fun. Btw, a motorcycle junk yard near me has a few of those old bikes in it, he did have some wheels last time I was there.
It was a really good time. The bike kept me entertained lol. A viewer graciously donated new wheels after this race, so the SP is good to go!

Nice job Gabe, even on a budget bike and with a messed up wrist your kicking butt and soaking up the KTM tears. I would be putting all of your physical comfort on the bike though, your fitness and prep for the race is sure to add something to the feeling of good after that race. BTW, thank you for offering your fitness notes on your website. I've definitely noticed how I can stand riding way better than I used to. Keep it up man.

My sp500 has won 2 vintage championships, and completed 3 races to win an over 30 expert age class championship cause my main bike broke down. The sp is an amazing bike. I resprung some rm125 front suspension to get a better race style rake out of the front forks. Put 16.5" rear shocks off a kdx400 on the back. She almost corners as good as my 2018 GasGas 300. Almost.

@@remady5827 I did not finish on the xr500. It got a flat like 2 minutes in. I did finish the race on an 06 kx250 with super cross suspension, no front brake, and a clutch that dragged. It would stall when I used the rear brake without giving it throttle so it was still an adventure . I will probably be back at the next 6 hour with the xr500
currently rebuilding a $550 1990 yz250 and you make me wanna run it in an endurance race like this

Hey Matt, I used to have the same Honda 500, with the same shifter problem. I pulled the cover and there is a clip that had worked it's way out of a groove, it's an easy repair, and worth the little bit of time to fix it correctly.

I had an '81 which was one of my favorite bikes ever. Small fuel tank though.

Can you please go in depth about how to make a custom intake like that and the Dial-A-Jet?
Definitely going to make a video about the dial a jet. The intake is nothing special, just a piece of silicone intake hose but I'll still try to show it better in an upcoming vid

You should do a budget build sires and mount 77-79 cr250 forks and shocks to solve the ground clearance and suspension issue
I've got the suspension upgrade planned out already. It'll basically be long travel of the same technology. I think it'll be much better. Very little money spent too!

It would be so sick if you put modern suspension and disk brakes on it
One has to wonder if some sort of front, and especially rear, suspension conversion would be possible to maximize those engine gains. Maybe something of a dr350? The rear would definitely involve cutting and welding though.
Though if he wanted to go that far it would probably be easier to swap the engine into a more capable frame.

@@redtobertshateshandles But it's still going to be non linkage. There's only so much travel and tuning that can be done to direct dual shocks.
The front end would be easy to sort out. Take any pick of practicality any front end, and just make it work. The rear end can accept practically any shocks too, but converting to a linkage would be a big job that I'm not up for. Right now the plan is to just go longer travel. I think even just a tiny bit more travel will help out a ton

Bring the SP back and do a new build. Upgrade that suspension, lift it slightly and get some disk brakes on it

Whats up Gabe could you please make a video about your elbow issue/ fixing it. Im struggling with the same thing and I could really use some advice
Yes. I will make one. The issue was a damaged tendon from overuse when I raced the 24 hour race solo. From repeated use, the ligaments in the elbows get damaged in all sorts of ways and then if it's just too much variety of damage, they don't heal back quite right. This is my elementary understanding of the issue. My course of rehab was some good time off where the elbow only got easy use. Everything atrophied down a little, but this was good because then my elbow wasn't as stressed during muscle tension. After that I started gaining back my strength in ways that didn't over-exert my arms. Basically just extremely careful training that provides just the bare minimum stimulus to keep the muscles happy and stimulated so they stay strong and don't atrophy. And I never hop back into training before I'm totally healed anymore because if I do, the issue really starts coming back.
