    Word of warning to viewers! It's a great video apart from one major issue I have a problem with - timestamp 3:32 to 3:50 - I'm surprised an official PRS video is posting this. I appreciate they probably know best being the manufacturer but I would highly recommend NOT adjusting the 6 PRS tremolo bridge screws under full string tension or you are at high risk of damaging the knife edge on the PRS tremolo. I've had to replace customers' PRS tremolos with worn/damaged knife edges in the past for exactly this reason. Best to perform this particular task ideally with no strings on but at least all strings fully loosened. Set the screw heights evenly. Optimal measure for each is just over 3/32" (approx 2.5mm) from the top of the bridge plate to the underside of the screw), then string her up and perform the string height with the saddles, intonation. One more crucial item missing from this video is adjusting the tremolo claw to allow the bridge to sit parallel with the body (if the existing setup does not give you this)

    As a UK resident and SE owner I can confirm the attention to detail these guys deliver. My £800 single cut is the best player I have and way beyond either LP I had was capable of. Keep it up folks, undeniable quality ❤️

    I have learned so much from watching this video. All of my SE's are playing perfectly, and a lot of it is thanks to the tips in this awesome video. One of the big things is the widening of the nut slots - why they come so narrow from the factory is kind of a mystery to me. GREAT video, guys!

    I just picked up a 2014 PRS Mushok Baritone, and it's one of the nicest playing guitars I've ever played- my main guitar is a 2006 Gibson Les Paul Custom, and at 1/5 of the price, my new PRS plays just as well. Loving it.

    I received my SE Standard with 9 gauge strings. I use 10 gauge strings. Originally I had it filed for the right size. But then I changed to the PRS graphite nut. But my main problem was that the G saddle on the bridge was stripped for the action bolts. So I had to send off for a set of PRS saddles… I do like the way it sounds now that I did all that work to it.

    I have the SE "Floyd" Custom 24, and I cannot say enough good things about it. It has replaced my $4,000 Les Paul Custom as my favorite guitar. It came from the store set up perfectly. The pickups are amazingly clear. Even with distortion, you can hear the individual notes of a chord, and the coil taps sound better than any other coil tapping pickups I've tried. Looks beautiful, feels awesome, sounds great... what more could you want from a guitar? Amazing work, guys! Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

    I had one of the SE models when they first came out over 10 years
    ago, and it was a beautiful guitar... eventually. Unfortunately when
    it arrived it had a high action due to a bow in the neck. This was
    easily fixed by tightening the truss rod, however this made any notes
    above the 10th fret choke out - the guitar needed a fret
    dress. Given the fact that I'd already had to adjust the truss rod,
    it's fair to say the guitar just needed a full set up. I took it to a
    local luthier I know well who sorted it for me at a “mates rates”
    price.
    I emailed the company I bought it from (I won't name them, but
    they are an online retailer who sell Guitars Amps & Keyboards)
    and politely asked why my guitar had not received a set up before
    being depatched. Their reply (which took nearly a week) was that a
    set up is not included in the price of any guitars they sell. I
    replied by asking if they bought a new car (even a cheap one) and
    immediately had to pay a mechanic to make it drivable, would they
    think it reasonable for the car dealership to say that adjusting the
    tracking & suspension was not included in the price of the car? I
    got no reply.
    I tell this story because PRS make a big deal about how all the SE
    models go through quality control at the Maryland factory. I don't
    know if this was the case when I bought mine, but if it was, then
    they didn't do a very good job.

      Hey Johny from what i can gather the SE range is made in Korea, and more recently, Indonesia. The quality control you speak of happens at the Maryland US factory and the more expensive non-SE models. I'd imagine they just do a more basic 'set up' from the factory, and after travel/shipping/banging around the local distributors can either properly set the guitar up (which costs them time/money, or simply not.

      I just bought an SE Custom 24, and the setup is garbage; it's unplayable. One of the reasons I bought the SE instead of the Standard is that the SE's are made in Korea, which supposedly has such fine guitar makers--so much for that idea. I'm not a guitar tech, and I don't even trust myself to fix something this out of whack. I'm fairly pissed.

    Just bought my third Se after having 3 core guitars I bought in the early 2000s,first was a Custom 24 with a FR and had some great issues,got rid of it,second custom 24 from ,2008 se problem with frets in the upper region, third was Custom 22 semi was just horrible,newest one the nut is cut too deep on high E going back tomorrow.I think the best ones are the CE22 from the early 2000s and I had a 2001 vore Hollowbody 1 with spruce top that was probably as nice as my Gibson 1960 es+345.My fourth Ce came today it's a 24 from 2003 that's just fabulous.I do think the frets on the cores from early 2000s wear out fairly quickly and for me I never grind and polish ,I get them regretted.Still better than any new Gibson or Fender.Prices have definatly gone up thought

    Nice, but I thought the pivot screws should have no tension on them in order to be adjusted.
    It is a good way to damage them if adjusted with tension on them. Or am I wrong?

    • @PRSGuitarsEurope
      @PRSGuitarsEurope  9 років тому +2

      Jacqueline Con “Well spotted, Jacqueline! If you’re making adjustments of more than a quarter turn to the pivot screws then they shouldn’t be under tension as you can easily damage them and/or the knifeedge. However we usually only have to make very small adjustments (if any) during the final set-up so in this instance it’s ok. Generally speaking you shouldn’t need to adjust them and should avoid doing so as it could invalidate your warranty. If you feel you need to for whatever reason, please contact us or your dealer first for advice.”

    Brilliant !! the perfect vid for me :-) I have two SEs - a 2001 Santana trem and a 2003 Soapbar, both of which I love and of course after *20 years* (I know!!) they remain superbly playable but it's great to know how you guys set up an SE to go to the dealer - a great reference point. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post the vid - it's also nice to recall that there are some Brits involved in the PRS story too !! I did hear from more than one source that the most effective upgrade you can do to your SE is replace the nut - wonder how that advice sits with you guys?
    (quick note to other posters - the plural of PRS is PRSs, same with the SE - if you have more than one SE (lucky you!) you have SEs... no green-grocers apostrophes are required! ;-) )

    i recently purchased a used near mint SE Torero (2010).. having a problem with the low E buzzing, open and fretted.
    Guitar Center repair guy did all he could do for standard setup.. fretboard is good, fret heights are good, bridge height and truss adjusted.. even changed to a different low E string... still buzzing.
    he did not check the truss rod itself (not included with the setup).
    its a great looking guitar in excellent condition. I hate to sell it.
    what else can be done? i thought about taking it to a pro repair but that might cost to much to repair for an SE.

    My PRS SE Standard did not come like this. What can I do if i buy a new SE and the G string nut channel is cut too deep and causes a buzz at the first fret ? The truss rod cover, and electrical compartment roughed up and also the bottom of the fret board near the nut is blurred as if something was spilled on it ? I bought over Ebay although the pictures do show the flaws they are not noticeable until you hold the guitar in your hands.The company that sold it to me over ebay is the music farm out of Canton, Ohio. I decided to keep the guitar because I live in the Philippines and returning stuff is such a hassle. I have on order from an ebay vendor a true tone bridge and from another vendor a guitar nut. I don't know if I should shim it up or what I spose i will experiment. All I can say is I wish my guitar would have been set up and clean before I bought it.

    Unfortunately, I've bought an entry-level PRS standard 24 and it is buzzing on the lower string, near the neck, at first positions and I can't lower the action down to my likings (usually my Ibanez was really low on strings, to play faster and not spend to much time pressing down harder the strings). Anyway the sound is otherwise stunning, I've bring the guitar to the shop where I've bought and they said it is the first time they find a PRS not in perfect shape, anyway they can't do anything about it either, so maybe I need to sell it as used and not working properly. A great shame, since I like the sound so very much but I cannot afford two PRS, while my Squier affinity feels as good as I need (the sound anyway is not as good and powerful as the PRS).

      this is my whole point. PRS claim to "expertly set up and inspect each and every PRS SE guitar before it leaves the factory floor" Utter BS. They are revolting guitars, sorry. Hybridising strats and gibson guitars produces a stale, homogenous tone and it neither one or the other. They look gorgeous, and are well made (the higher end ones) but they have serious design issues, and require a lot of maintenance.

    Now then guys, having watched the video, I ordered my nice new SE Custom 22 (old model) yesterday and received it today. However, I noticed that the two grub screws on the bridge were hanging out, as in I could turn them with my fingers. Thinking this can't be right I have used the allen key to wind them in. NOT tight, but just enough to ensure they don't fall out. Will this now need setting up as I can't imagine it has been done, nor passed through any quality control. ID no. P11562 if it helps.

      it is on the back of the trem. There you should see the screws that adjust the intonation (move the saddles forward and backwards). So, on that side you'll see a small hole that kinda leads to the sleeve. Plug the wrench in and start turning.

      @Muse Muser Hi there, I recently replace the nut with a graphtech which I fitted a filed myself.
      It made a big difference to the issues I was having.
      The old nut was so poorly fitted. Replacing it has transformed the way it feels and plays.
      That and a good setup too. Apparently it's a fair common complaint with PRS SE models.

    • @adamsan7494
      @adamsan7494 2 роки тому

      @Muse Muser Its been a few months since I did the setup so cant remember exact specs.
      I had a lot of fret buzz near the nut and a fairly low action.
      I added a little relief and lowered the action to roughly 1.65mm/1.70mm on the bass E.
      There's a little bit of buzz still on the first and second frets. Not enough to notice through the amp though.
      I like a lower action but struggling to dial it in much better because of my inexperience with setups.
      I hope this helps in some way.👍

    Hello, I finally bought the PRS SE custom 24 and it came with 9 gauge strings. But I play with 10 gauge and now I can not keep the correct tuning. In the back there are 4 springs. any advice. Thank you. I tried with 5 springs but the strings became very hard. Please any advice.?????

      @Hector55Munoz 7 років тому +2

      Micky Stone I use 9 Gauge but when I recieved my SE24, it was having trouble staying in tune, until a long time of use, basically until the strings started to sound warm, not dead but warm (My strings never sound dead because I clean & maintain them) ... it stayed in tune fine. Then after its first string change a couple months later, with D'addario 9 Gauge the strings stay in tune within the hour of install. In other words, just change the strings :)

    • @Hector55Munoz
      @Hector55Munoz 7 років тому +2

      Micky Stone so just put the original springs on, also any other advise would be to use the string locking method on the tuner holes when you restring the Axe, and the give the guitar a good set up on the Truss Rod and saddle adjustment if needed. I also have a trick I use, if you have loose whammy bar problems. Good luck.

    I would think that the benefit of having guitars made in the far east, would be that you could have some extra detail work made at a fair price, making them more competitive that way. maybe it's not possible to train people to the right level there.
    I would love to buy far east guitars with quality hardware and great setups, so there would be no need of upgrades. I'm tired of spending time on upgrades FWIW

      I own 2 SE guitars. I also like very low string action. Stock should be around 1.5MM on the low E at the 12th fret. To get the action I like, I had to do a fret level, crown and polish. Then set it back up again. Now the height is at 1.2mm, that's extremely low, and no fret buzz! For the money, even if you have to spend a bit more to have fret work done, the SE guitars are still a killer deal. GREAT GUITARS!

      You can adjust the Trem slot on the SE by tightening the hex screw on the back of the bridge. I like the neck on my SE. It feels a lot like an SG neck. my American Standard Strat has a "C" neck and it's not as fast as the neck on my PRS. I keep it because sometimes you just need a Strat. I love both my PRS and my Strat equally but for different reasons.

      +Will Corey (655321) Thanks for the advice with the trem friend, but this thing just doesn't compete with Tele's or Strats. plus the volume drop off when you implement the coil tap is ridiculous. I recently added a Squier CV to the collection and it's a far better guitar than this SE thing.

      +Will Corey (655321) I have the same as you. It looks the part but guitars are generally like women, the prettier they are the more trouble they tend to be. Makes me appreciate a plain old workhorse Tele.

    • @WCG72
      @WCG72 9 років тому

      sledge1960 Well like I said, to each his own. However you should also know that every individual guitar is different and that goes for all brands. Just because one guitar doesn't agree with the player doesn't mean they're all bad. That's why you have to play it before you buy it.
      I'll just end by saying that I've been playing guitar for the better part of 25 years and I've owned several guitars including LP's SG's, Strats, an Ibanez Artist and a Westone Pantera. I still have a Thinline Telly, an American Standard Strat and an Epiphone ES-335. I primarily play the PRS mainly for the versatility factor. I generally play whatever guitar is going to give me the sound I need at the moment and that's usually the PRS.

      PRS said they would have to make me one and took my customer information. The unfortunate thing is the process takes a month. The good thing is my customer information will be embedded into the barcode that sits behind the neck pickup along with the guitar specific information. It's kind of a LoJack type thing. I should be getting it next week.

    Not enough factories care enough to set up their instruments properly, and as a result the vast majority of guitars on the market are all out of whack.and have terrible intonation. A lot of people don't even realize it but for the money they spend, its crazy to settle for thess imperfections. Luckily some companies still care enough to make sure their instruments play correctly.
    I odered my SE from Sweetwater, and they do their own 55 point inspection ON TOP of what PRS does, and let me just assure you it made all the difference. I've played two other PRS's that got nowhere near that attention (Guitar Center sucks) and they didnt stay in tune well, and had bad intonation problems. which shouldn't happen with a $1,000-2,000 instrument.
    Sweetwater really goes all out thoufh. They put a little card in that shows the name of the guy who does the 55 point inspection and he checks off all the 55 boxes as they specifically apply to your guitar then he signs off on it and then ANOTHER person checks HIS work and signs off on it. The result of such attention and accountability was that right out of the box, it felt and played amazing. It was perfection. The action was like butter. I've never played a guitar that tuned up so nicely and felt so.smooth. which is kind of sad because I've been playing for almost 30 years and owned a bunch of guitars (Fender, PRS, Ibanez) but never had good luck with finding guitars that were set up correctly. I wish they all did this. I wasted so much time trying to tune guitars that can't be tuned. Its a shame. Thanks to PRS and Sweetwater for doing the right thing and assuring their instruments play as designed!
