Proud to say my reef is still filtered by a canister, still have the same media since being spotlighted by BRS on tank reacts
i have a 75 gallon saltwater running a canister filter for years !! no issues !!!
What media are you using? I have a fluval 406
I have using them for years, they are ideal for small tanks. Thank you for your great contents.
Poorman’s chiller: submerged 3/4 of your canister filter in a bucket of ice water during summer time.
Love watching your videos.. your an asset to BRS!
thanks guys, my first successful sps tank ran on a since canister. These days I use an OASE biomaster! Both are excellent filters. Please introduce the reefing community to the Oase, its essentially a canister filter with a filter sock inbuilt.
I saw your comment the other week, & have been debating the OASE due to removing the heater from within the display. Done tons of reachsearch on it, however there’s one major key point everywhere I’ve looked that said “this canister filter has a loud burble” some have said to drill the pre filter intake (which for the price I don’t want to go through the hassle, just want to plug and play) any opinions on this? I know it’s been 2 years since you’ve commented, but hope you reply lol
@@ayopapo2023hey mate i might be able to help i have a biomaster 350 and there is no burble at all :)
And also heater built in
Had an Oceanic 75 gallon saltwater tank running with a Fluval 3 stage canister filter using carbon, phosguard and floss. Tank performed great for years.
My first reef tank was a 55 gallon run on a Fluval 406, the only reason I switched to a sump was because everyone kept telling me my canister was a nitrate factory. Unfortunately without any evidence of nitrates and having a very successful tank for almost two years I was stupid enough and listened to them.
@@1GolfJones so I could strip my 75 down. Run my fx6 as Thomas here describes get a powerhead. Upgrade my hob to tidal 110. Get a new skimmer n be fine
I'm running a 20 gallon reef on 2x basic HOB filters with sponge/floss, and some carbon only, some macro algae in the display and no skimmer and is working great!
I like the analogy of a canister filter as a “reactor with an internal motor.”
That said; I use a Bulk Reef Supply mini reactor for polishing. Carbon, GFO, foam replaced with pond filter/Pinkie Floss and off you go!
Picking up a few extra cartridges makes weekly or biweekly changes painless.
Thanks for your insight,
Jim
Funny thing, I started in freshwater, and I've always thought of media reactors as canister filters with external motors.
I have that exact model, it ran my freshwater tank for quite some time until I decided to drill the tank and play with the ecology and filtration. Good Canister Filter. Performed excellently.
Even then, I still ran it for extra filtration and it was essentially a fancy powerhead after that point.
From a biological perspective, it will filter salt water just as well. If you want a super simple system, canisters are awesome. Even in Salt.
The only limitation is that any attachments have to be in-line on the canister return line. Which can limit automation or nutrient export options quite heavily. However, those are add-on's and not truly essential... Nice to have, but not essential.
I have used canister filters on salt tank, no problems! Good review
I run a canister filter on my 80 gallon system the canister is rated for a 600 gallon aquarium and had a built in UV sterilizer I modified the light to run a full marine spectrum led and replaced the fine bio media with corse pads and crushed live rock and corse carbon pads I’ve had it running for two years as my return pump from my sump and every time I test my parameters it’s within desired specs I’ve gone 3 months without a water change do to a back injury and it was still perfect though I had to dose calc alK and amminos to keep the water good for the corals and 2 years in have not needed to tear down the canister more then once and that was because an arrow crab some how made it’s way into the canister and partially clogged the intake
I run a fluval fx4 on my 45 gallon plastic stock tank. Running it with the included filter pads and got it crammed full with seachem matrix. This was all supposed to be a temporary setup when my 40 gallon reef tank sprung a leak. Over a year later and it’s still running great. Only clean it about once a month, though my tank has both a mangrove and good amount of macro algae.
I had a 29-gallon reef tank for three years with a HOB filter before I upgraded to 120 gallon. A canister will definitely work for a reef tank.
i have a hob on my 10g before i upgraded to my 120g 2 months ago which is running fluval fx6 :D
This looks like what I want. I had forgotten about canister filters, I want to run a tank without permanent mechanical filtration because I think it would be good to have food suspended in the water column more often for my corals without constantly pulling it out before the corals can get to it. I ran a tank for a while without a filter or skimmer but thought it would be nice to toss something on to polish the water once or twice a week.
I run a fluval canister with a inline ehiem uv and my reef is thriving…it also helps that I can reduce the filter flow so I put it as slow as possible
After watching this video, I got this Whale 500 from you to try on my new 75 gallon I've got cycling. My question is can you dose copepods if you are only running the course pads and biomedia or will the filter just trap them all up? Thanks so much for all your content and products.
great video very good information nice tank bro happy reefing from the Mad Reefer
My first tank had a canister filter, and this has everything I wish mine had. If they could make a would be great for keeping your tank going while replumbing, cleaning sump , uv, or return pump.
I run a fluval 307 on the back of my IM 25 lagoon. I have it in the second chamber with a prefilter on the intake with nothing but bio media in the canister. No sponges or mechanical media. Every water change I clean out the pre filter (15 seconds at most) and monthly I rinse out the media with tank water. It’s been a few years and no issues.
Great setup! Nice touch moving the mechanical to the intake!
I run one on each of my two systems. The DT I have is drilled at the bottom so its being used. The filter failed on me and leaked and I had to replaced it as I couldn't find parts quickly. When I started my second frag system I refurbished the old filter and used it. The output of the filter goes through the uv and then back to the tank.
I have a sump and I use a canister filter. Have you tried changing dirty filter socks and have it drip all over the place? Why would anyone use some open air dirty smelling filters (even the auto rotating ones) when you can have an canister filter that will enclose all that smell.
Dude!!! UR on fye! with ur vids. Don't like most of the product, but YOU ARE ON FIRE :-)
BRS must love you.
Haha cheers!!!!! 🤩
I run a canister on my reef with an aquamaax hob. I love having a built in skimmer and room for probes and heater. But my canister keeps my reef rocking
Would this be good for quarantine tanks ?
I have had a fx6 filter running my tank for about 4 months now in a 90 gallon and I’ll be moving it to my 125 that’s now empty and running 2 fx6 on it when I rescued the tank 8 months ago it was a 50 bowfront with a sump and salt creep sucked haven’t had really any since I switched to the canister
What would be a good size canister for a 29g saltwater? Would do water polishing as well as use for a secondary filter.
I run an oase biomaster on my 45 gallon, I think it's completely viable because the prefilter can be changed without taking the whole thing apart, basically acts as a sock and the inside basically never gets dirty so minimises the risk of crap rotting in there :)
Plus it's got a heater Inbuilt
Plus I just use filter floss the prefilter so it can be binned regularly
I have a bunch of fx6 on freshwater tanks. I'm so sick of taking them a part to clean them. I love the flease roller. So easy to do maintenance on.
I’m looking to set up my first reef tank as a nano tank. I was gifted the tank and don’t have room for a giant sump set up
Hey there, so, if I'm going to setup a 80 gallon tank, the advise would be to get the Sicce Whale 500, as is the largest and starts at 80 gallon?
I also run a canister and Hang over Blue Ocean 100 protein skimmer for a years Now on a REEF 75G.
I use fluval canister filters on all my reef tanks. I have 3.
I run a 75 gallon with a fx4 😊
120g with fx6 :D
Also have a 75 gallon with the FX4. I have modified the contents of the filter but it does great and my nitrates are consistently undetectable.
@@jkmarshek hows your fx4 setup?
my fx6 is default setup rn while i do my initial cycling of the tank i'm running a lightless 4 months cycle while i stock up on initial fish. moving forward after that i will probably switch to 1 mechanical/chemical compartment and rest biological
@@MrDon967...I removed most of the filter pads that came with it except for the foams that run up the sides (course foams), I added a medium and fine foam at the top and then the rest of the baskets are filled to the brim with bio media. I also added about 2 lbs of bio media into the void in the bottom of the cannister where the water initially comes in to help settle the bulk of the muck there before it even hits the foam. I do a good monthly clean and that's it. Maybe once a month or so I'll put a bag of carbon in the bottom tray for a day or so just to polish the water. I do a 5 gallon water change weekly and dose 2 part pharma from BRS daily
@@jkmarshek nice sounds similar to what i plan to do. i was originally playing on putting just a filter sock on the return or the intake but the filter sock provided in the fx6 didn't stay put. did the fx4 come with tiny filter socks. i think those would be awesome and collect all large enough detritus and very easy to take out and clean i know next time when i open my fx6 i'll try to tweek stuff i just put it together in a rush coz i was bored of seeing an empty tank hehe :D
How about the skimmer ?
My reef tank is doing amazing with my fx4 canister.....
Can you put this on a 10g tank
Hello, do canister filters have issues with calcium build up? in that case what I can do? Thank you!
Those CHOPS!! Lmao the glares are from people in disbelief you’re rocking those pork chops 🤣
Sometimes it's hard to tell 😅
Er No:
I came into this hobby from freshwater... never again going to go through the hassle of cleaning a cannister filter again. Ever.
Your chops don't intimidate me, I said never!
That is why you get an OASE biomaster. Easier to clean with an inbuild prefilter.
Hahahaha 🤣
@@ThomasBReef Keep up the good work, I like your vids and do check out the BRS products that's promoted. ;)
Cheers!
Which one should I use for a 20 gallon
Everyone: glaring
Thomas: I can feel the glare...
Everyone: sheepishly still trying to glare but also laughing 🤣
Hahahaha 🤣
What are the best media filters to use? I have a fluval 406 with several different boxes for media. I have a FOWLR tank
Aside from biological media, carbon or a phosphate absorption media may serve you well.
Thats how we did it for decades 60's - 70's
I run 2 canisters on my mixed reef 180g with no problem
keep it simple peeps
It’s glad knowing that we’re not alone.
BUT
ANY Lilly pipe reefers here ☝🏻☝🏻
YEET
Hahahaha I'm always afraid I'll YEET my lily pipes by accident 😅
Would this be a good fit for my evo 13.5 tank? Which model should I get?
The Whale 120 would likely be in the GPH range you're looking for for a 13.5 gallon tank. It may not integrate easily into the AIO back chamber of the system, however
Can I run this on my 20 gallon tank even tho it’s been running off a hob filter for 6 to 7 months
No issue changing at all, maybe seed it with some bacteria/media from the old filter even though your live rock should be doing the biological anyway, could even run both for a week before removing the hob if you're worried about anything going wrong?
@@PracticalReefer okay thank you
I toyed with the idea of using one as my return pump. Running carbon. Al99 and some form of zeolite in it. Never got round to it but may revisit the idea on my next tank.
Just a quick not on that! They don't run properly unless both tubes are up and over the edge of the display tank; if you try to use the intake tube on a sump and have the output in the display, it often won't run at all.
@@ThomasBReef cheers mate. Will try something else.
Hi Thomas, I've run my saltwater aquarium with a canister from the start and have only had problems with phos and nitrate. Would you not have just 1 tray of sponges and 1 tray of chemical ie carbon or phos 0.04 both in bags and 1 tray of rock??
a canister filter is basicely not different from a sump, it is the same,if you clean it regulary you will not have more troubre than with a sump
I run two canisters on my 120 gallons with no issues.
me too.. on my cichlid tank.
same here on a mixed reef
@@brucewayne731 No ISSUES? thats good to hear..
I have a can filter I used on my discuss tank, is the motor for fresh water okay for saltwater?
Yes they are the same motors.
My softie tank is run with a canister filter. My tank is crystal clear.
The only good Canister filter is one that has power head at the bottom...
The only canister filter I can think of that has a pump on the bottom is the one made by Elos. I've never actually seen anyone use it, or anywhere in the US you can buy it without special Importing.
What other canister filters have pumps on bottom?
Go on...
@@clintparsons3989 Fluval fx series
I have always thought of canister filters as self-contained, enclosed sumps. Not really as media reactors since there isn't any movement of the media.
I have owned plenty of canister filters, from Eheim to Aqua Design Amano. This line of filters looks like a cheap piece of crap. The plastic looks extremely cheap, media baskets increase bypass, plunger gimmick is heat but looks like an accident 5 waiting to happen. Quick releases and pipe locks look cheap....I like the thick hose it uses though.
The only thing this filter has going for it is the Sicce pump. Sicce makes good pumps. If you want a canister filter do yourself a favor an get an Eheim or Oase. I will take an Eheim Classic 2217 over this thing any day. More inconvenient to use but way more efficient.
Yep, cannisters have been in the freshwater hobby for ages and Eheim is the Tunze/maxspect of that world, if given a choice a Eheim or Fluval any day of the week instead of this.
@@StreetArtistsOfTheWorld I have used all three across many installations. From my experience, Sicce is by far superior to eheim in simplicty/build quality.
@@Mikeymikemike Love the sicce return pumps, these look too "chinajunky".
LOL so you have one ?
Don’t ever go with a canister filter go with an AIO system or a sump, I learnt the hard way, there’s no real way to export nutrients with a canister filter it just holds and eventually clogs with detritus as all that is used In one is sponges and filter media anything like fish poop, food ect gets filtered out of the water by the sponges and just sits there until it is changed creating phosphate, nitrate ect and since cleaning a canister filter is not preferable on a regular basis it is not fit for a reef tank
I've been using a cheap Chinese canister since I started in the hobby. The maintenance isn't even all that hard or different from a system running filter socks or something. 1-3 times a month during a water change I disconnect the filter from the system, dispose of the water in the canister body, change the filter pads (also clean the old foam pads), rinse the media in fresh saltwater, fill up the filter, and close it all up. Takes like 5-10 minutes added to my water change routine (take out water from DT, clean glass, etc). My levels have always stayed within my goal ranges
@@AydenDevonny same here, I’m not saying it doesn’t work okay but a sump can house much more efficient nutrient export, I’m upgrading to a sump as I used to get build up within a month in my canister that caused phos, nitrate problems
Sounds like you’re one of the lazy ones that didn’t clean their canister on the regular, or you have poor cleaning skills, or you didn’t have your media set up right. There’s too many success stories with canister filters. As long as you’re not lazy you’ll be fine. Don’t spread the false narrative
@@ellisbarton2261 depends what size tank you have too
Not too Xpensive
I use the whale 200 for my freshwater aquascape.......
REALLY not a fan of the shitty primer system that breaks way too easily
This is usually a bad idea, can you say nitrtate bomb? You would have to clean them every 2 weeks tops or run pumice and nothing else.
Totally agreeeeee
I run carbon and filter floss in a fluval 407 on my 20g. Clean it every two months, nitrates are almost undetectable which is becoming an issue as they won’t raise. “Nitrate factory” is a total myth
A large one on a Nano tank could be used as an external sump essentially and if you turn it off and dump it out, its your weekly water change. Not ideal for all situations,. but can definitely be used in a good way
@@eillyacostandinides3344 anything you don’t clean is a nitrate bomb
@@Jaywil07 true but easier to pick filter sock when you see ita dirty from taking out a full filter especially when you don't see whats inside but i agree with you and actually use it for emergency methods like rowa and like thomas said
Idk why this is often ignored by the reefing community because it’s basically a media reactor on steroid
Can’t have “Roid Rage” in the salt water world. No, no, no ...... 😉
Suction Cups....
Eh when all that company's will learn that those cups are Garbage :/
In time they are useless.
Can the pretty lady do the product review
waiiiit who in here is happy with sicce customer service?
that was supposed to be a joke right about their customer service?'rght?
