  • Incontinence in dogs is common in middle-aged, neutered, female dogs especially. Thankfully, in most cases, treating incontinence in dogs is a matter of working through a few simple steps to completely stop all urine leakage.
The first step is making sure the diagnosis is right and the correct cause of incontinence is made. The reason for this is that different incontinence causes have different treatments. In most cases, a hormonal imbalance will be the cause but at the very least, a urine sample should be checked.
The next step is trialing some treatment. The most common ones work very well, but not all dogs will respond. If this is the case then more tests may need to be run or different treatment options trialed

My 4 yr old female lab is on Proin and it does work, but you need to stay on top of it. If you slack off the meds thinking all is ok, the leaking will pick back up quickly. It's a lifetime medication, not a temp solution. Good luck with your doggos! ♥

I have a young male standard poodle who after much testing and several specialist have concluded that his urinary incontinence and sluggish peristalsis is the result of a congenital neurological problem at birth. After just one acupuncture treatment I now have hope that this might be more manageable. He now seems to be able to differentiate between the impulses to urinate or defalcate. Instead of hunching 15 times before urinating and only then be able to defalcate, he now goes straight to urinating and then will start hunching to empty his bowels. I hope the 3 additional sessions will help wake up his nerves even more. I'm not sure how long this new improvement will last without additional treatments but I am VERY encouraged. He still has to wear a diaper indoors, and I can deal with that. I can not deal with watching him suffer as he strains to have a BM or to urinate.

I have a male husky that is 12. He was a rescue at 8, that came with an enlarged prostrate that they thought was cancerous. We give him piroxicam to shrink the prostrate. He develops UTI’s about every other year which makes his incontinence worst. Recently this has been a big issue.. he just does not leak, it is a huge wet spot on his bed or carpet. He also has a host of other old age issues with dementia, standing in his own, loss of hearing, eating only once a day, falling down, wandering around at night, staring at the bathroom door ( no on e is in there).. He still engages us often but mostly he sleeps. When I play with the Staffordshire in the yard, sometime he doesn’t even move. We are thinking about putting him down.,Frankly we have done a lot for all the dogs we have owned, but if they can’t stand on their own and they make a mess of the house, then that is a big problem. By example, I live in the desert. If Henry falls outside while we are not here, and he can’t get up, he will die, cooked in the sun. My wife is afraid to leave him alone, which cramps our lifestyle. With the urinary issues, I’m cleaning up his beds and or the carpet every day and sometimes twice a day. I hate to lose the old guy. But it is becoming a full time job.
    What do you think?

With a male dog then after checking that there is no bladder stone, infection, or problem causing more urine to be produced than I would likely trial one of the incontinence medications. The prostate may also be causing an issue with your dog too. As far as dementia goes, this might help - ua-cam.com/video/hXnKXaTA0pk/v-deo.html

My 14 year old dog has been on Proin for about 3 years and it worked well for a while. Now, every time we bring her back in from a walk, she leaks after laying down. We’ve shortened her activity, but it still happens. We’ve tried the estriol but nothing changed. She’s leaking pretty much everyday now. She does drink a lot of water. The vet did blood tests recently but everything came back fine except low thyroid (which she’s on meds for now). Her incontinence seems related to her hips…is that possible? We’re at a loss of what to do and it’s becoming such an issue.

My dog over exercised fierce running yesterday that he was panting for some half an hour ...it took him some time to get normal...his panting scared me...so he drank a lot of water then slept...then in midnight i noticed continuous leaking ... water patches on his bedding...took him out once for peeing...he urinated a lot...had full bladder.....later on in the night there was very little leaking but still it was like a few droplets near his urethra ...my dog is just 2 years old baby ...not fair God...he is anyways having no sign of illness...eating and playing well...😪

My 11 year old Husky/Shepherd, spayed female, has been on Stilbestrol for about 6-8 months, she was on one pill every 3 days but recently she's having accidents again. Also she is drinking a lot more water, so far our vet did urine sample and said everything is ok however he urine is diluted and not concentrated.
Vet is also saying that sometimes dogs build resistance to stilbestrol and trying different medication may be a good option.
My other dog was on stilbestrol for over 2 years, receiving it every 5 days and it worked, she passed away at 13 from liver failure.
Not sure what i should do... they suggest blood work, but she had complete blood work done 4 months ago and thrybsaid she was in perfect health as far as blood work is concerned, I can't really afford doing it again so soon after it was done.

My 12 year old is on an increased furosimide for heart failure. NEVER a problem with incontinence until Furosimide was increased? can you offer any advice. Vet gave lasix injection as she went into respiratory distress and said increase frusimide to 2 x 2 times a day? this is when the incontinence started, usually when she is asleep, especially at night. Vet now says decrease furosimide by 1/2 a tablet and see how she goes, then maybe decrease again? 2 x 2 a day was apparently 'short term'. I know she is at the end of her life but is doing well now on an airways medication. Its just the urine leaking?

Hi Dr. Alex, I was wondering if you might be able to offer any advice - I've been out most of the day today with my 3 year old Lab, Molly. She has been doing her usual scent-marking but then I noticed as she stopped and stooped to pee/mark but stayed there for much longer than usual. Then we we got home, we noticed after a short while there was pee on her bed - we thought perhaps she might have just got overexcited.
Then just now, she's lying on my bed sleeping, when suddenly she jumps down and digs at her bed on the floor, stoops and pees a little on it! - This is VERY unusual behaviour as she never has accidents, she is always very good at letting us know she wants to go out.
I'm thinking it might be best to have her checked at the vets tomorrow (It's late here in the UK), but just wondered if you had any advice or tips that could be useful?
She seems otherwise fine in herself as far as I can tell.

It sounds very much like she has cystitis which is most likely to be due to a bladder infection in dogs. There can be other causes although they are not so common (for example last week I saw a dog whose bladder was full of stones!). If you can take a urine sample with you when you go to the vet then that would be really helpful - you don't have to collect a lot

@@OurPetsHealth I took her today, but actually because I noticed her licking her paw, and when I inspected it looked infected.
So took her down to the vets and mentioned about both issues - turns out it was an infected cut, and he did an ultrasound and said it does look to be the case with the UTI as well. So she has Anti-inflammatory, Antibiotic and a gel for the cut - A VERY! expensive trip but hopefully it will get her all healed up and back to normal again.

My 15 yo spayed yorkie, after urine tests and blood work, was put on Proin for 2 years the Proin stopped working so I took her off and even though she still leaks urine when sleeping her personality has come back. She no longer spends most her day hiding under the bed and interacts with me and our other dog again. The vet has suggested upping the Proin or surgery but only gives it a 50/50 chance of being successful. I hate the thought of her going back to hiding under the bed all day and pacing all night but the idea of surgery on a 15 yo with only 50% chance of success isn't appealing either, especially when factoring the cost and with putting an old dog under sedation.
Are there any natural solutions I could try?
What do you think the success rate for surgery is?
Thank you for making this video.

We have just had a urine test done for our leaky Frenchie and has now got to have a blood test to check her kidneys if that shows nothing what other tests is she most likely going to need? I Want to be prepared as the vet does not tell you all of the tests they may require

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  4 роки тому

It really depends on the individual. If there are no other concerns with your girl then starting incontinence treatment is probably the most likely next step. If the bloods show any problem or there is a feeling more is involved than it may be that imaging (ultrasound or xray) is next or a different form of treatment is needed

My 13yr old Blue Heeler has become incontinent over the last 8 months. When he pees outside it takes him a very, very long time. Sometimes he’ll stand there for 5 minutes in one spot when he first goes outside. Inside he’s in diapers because he’s totally incontinent in the house. It’s hard. And the diapers are more expensive than human diapers which, in my opinion, is cruel. We did 10 days of antibiotics and almost a month of Proin with no results whatsoever so we stopped giving it to him. Any ideas? We cook all his food now so this isn’t related to a dog food issue…or at least it doesn’t now. We had switched to purine pro plan for older dogs when this started. Now he’s eating chicken, beef, fish and vegetables with some pasta and rice thrown in there. He’s otherwise healthy and still has loads of energy. Just looking for any sort of answer. Thanks

Hey friend, I can completely understand. We have had this problem with our Pittie ever since she was a puppy. I recommend reusable diapers for every day of the week, and putting a pad in the diaper so it soaks up as much urine as possible. At least you will save a little $ over time!

My dog is nine years old and incontinence pills / multiple blood tests are becoming too expensive for my parents. Blood test results have been fine so far besides a low white blood cell count. Dog nappies and the like are out of the picture. They want to put her down but she doesn’t seem to be in pain. I feel like she has so much life left in her. Do you think putting her to sleep is the best option for her?

    • @OurPetsHealth

He is likely to need more tests to help rule out bladder stones, prostate disease, tumors and a resistant infection before the diagnosis of incontinence can be made and specific treatment for this started. This is especially important in male dogs where hormone-related incontinence is uncommon

I'd want to be sure that there wasn't a problem with ectopic ureters, or something else going on as apart from peeing when excited or scared, incontinence in younger dogs is not a common problem. This can involve contrast xrays or referral for ultrasound/other imaging
