  • Do you have a senior dog? 👉 If you are fortunate to have a dog stay with your family into their old age, then you will know just how tranquil, kind and affectionate they can be. Me too. My heart hurts. She starting to have issues getting up and doing stairs. She lays around a lot now. Not eating as much. But during the day she’s fairly happy. But slow. And it’s horrible how we humanize that hopeless look in their eyes. I’ve been trying high quality CBD to help with her arthritis. Only been a couple weeks now but they said give it time to really help. I think it helps to get all the crying out the way first before that terrible day happens to cleanse the soul. Then you can think more clearly.

@@NuNuRokd it's pretty common for older dogs to lay around more as they get older, if your doggo is skipping meals then try to feed him/her some of your food, that usually wakes the pupper up :)

Ahh. I needed this video badly. My 12 year old dog (Dutch Shepherd) is really old now and I didn’t really understand some of his symptoms. Its noticeable that combined with the last time he was attacked by another dog combined with his weaker state he was became very aggressive in a defensive way. He is scared of some dogs that he never was scared of before and he immediately bulks up at the sight of a dog coming at him.

I have a small dog that's 17 years old. It's sadly humbling to realize what is in my control and what isn't. Our daily walks are slow as she trails behind me and I've noticed her movements becoming progressively more stiff and slower. I found that supplementing a capsule of Borage (cold pressed) oil into her wet food every 2nd/3rd day has helped a lot with her arthritis and has given her increased mobility. Borage oil contains Linoleic acid (LA) and Gamma-Linoleic acid (GLA) which are Omega-6 essential fatty acids with powerful anti-inflammatory properties. I hope somebody finds this information helpful.

whats more helpful is painkiller. my dog has to be carried up and down the steep stairs for 2 years. then she injured her neck (unrelated). on the painkillers for that, she became able to do the stairs again by herself so we kept her on that after her neck was better. she was able to do the stairs for 2 more years. now im back to carrying her but it would have been cruel of me to only give herbal supplements when there are real drugs that have a much stronger effect.

Update: had to have my dog put down today. Truly heartbreaking.
His cough / yack was very frequent and over the course of 3-4 days he got worse and worse. His demeanour changed and a once cheerful lab then stopped wagging his tail and appeared to be down. Eventually he refused to move or eat. Trying to coax him with his lead just made him anxious and go into a cough / yack fit. We then decided to end his pain (obvs much to our discomfort).
I tell you, watching your best pal who you had a strong bond with, who was always happy and playful, quickly slip away to lifelessness was truly heartbreaking. At the end of the day, it was the right thing to do to end his suffering.

Ah, you guys do such a good job on your videos. I also think, not Necessarily pertaining to old dogs but, a dog on a leash makes it vulnerable to other dogs, I’ve noticed. At the dog park, once I walk in with a dog in my arms or on a leash, the other dogs try to lunge. Once the dog is on the ground and off the leash, everything becomes fine.

I've got a yellow mut who even at 15 years old is as strong as a year old, however his mind has changed greatly. He's become more keen to allow strangers close as well as being friendlier w other dogs, but he also requires a much higher maintenance, specially when it comes to company. As an adult he wasn't very big on being held too long or staying sat next to people, prefering to play on his own or rummage the backyard. Nowadays even after six or more hours of sitting right beside me and being pet at every chance, he'll stay up howling for an hour or two if he's not rocked to sleep. It's kind of heartbreaking seeing the amount of anxiety he feels and can only keep at bay when someone's with him. I wish I could always be there every minute with him without fail to spare him the anguish.
Cherish and take advantage of when your dogs can take care of themselves, because when the day comes and they entirely depend on you, any moment that you can't be there will mortify them and break your heart.

Thank you for the validation of my dogs behaviors. She's a 13yr old Australian Cattle Dog who has been my seizure alert and response dog since she was 6yrs old. Before her service training, we were a competitive herding and agility team. She's now suffering with cataracts, arthritis and extensive food allergies, her lab panels all come back within normal ranges for her age and condition.
Her behaviors have changed dramatically in the past year, she's started excessive barking at noises, charging and barking at strangers, not listening to commands or refusing to behave as expected, or trained, and the inability to negotiate going up stairs. The lunging at others and barking are the most disturbing behaviors as they are aggressive. I understand where the behaviors are coming from, my question is if there is an effective way to remedy the aggressive behaviors at this age and stage of her life?
I love her dearly and miss the independence her abilities provided me. I need to start training a new dog but I do not want to split my time with another dog when she needs me now. I would appreciate any remedial suggestions or ideas.
    Thank you.

Such a nice educational video! My senior dog has indeed developed a sudden food agression by the age of 10 ...bit her owner for the 1st time over a peace of food...despite being very well trained, even to normally spit out any food by command...not anymore lol. The video helped us with reassurance that some times things change and the need is not for more discipline and training, but more tolerance and affection. We are revising the dog's pain meds and food intake to see if its causing this sudden serious behaviour change. Thank you for one more good video.

I can identify with your situation. My dog patch is 13 and has a cataract in one eye recently. He’s become aggressive this year too. It’s always in the evening when I have low light on from a lamp. I’ve tried moving the lamp incase shadows were upsetting him but it’s whenever I move about si it’s getting too much. I’m going to ask the beg to refer me to an animal behaviourist. It scares me sometimes and it’s stressful for both of us. Sometimes he wakes mid sleep on the attack. This is hard so I do hope I can find a way to ease this issue and give us both some relief. Wishing you all the best too.

My nephew had a female Rottweiler that was the sweetest dog until she got up in years. Chy was quite old for a Rottweiler, with a lot more white/grey spots than any other dog of any breed which was most prominent on her shoulder and " elbow " joints. As she aged, not only did her appearance, but her demeanor changed. Once a friendly dog, she was now very protective of her family, growling if any strangers moved even remotely threateningly or raised their voices. My sister still made sure she got at least adequate exercise and nutrition, but another symptom of advancing age was that Chy would eat...then minutes later vomit her food. She became extremely sensitive to her diet.

DyingStar 117 unfortunately he passed away on 9th Jan 2019, we had to have him put down. His heart condition worsened and he refused to eat (never ever refused food), stopped wagging his tail and refused to get up. We knew it was his time and we wanted to let him sleep with dignity. During the injection, he was looking at me directly in the eyes as I stroked him and told him that he was a good boy. As he faded, he slowly leaned backwards and nuzzled into my dads arm and softly passed away. Many tears were shed then but not anymore, because I can’t help but smile when I think of him!

Okay, thank you for the caveat that the "senior dog" category depends on a number of factors. My wife and I have a Bichon Frise mix rthat we rescued over 6 years ago. He was estimated to be at least 2-3 years old when we got him, so he's *at least* 7.5 years old today. Our vet esitmates he has 8-10 good years left in him, based on his health so far. This dog is just as fit, energetic and intelligent as he was when we first adopted him. I grew up with pure-bred labs. They both had to be put down due to debilitating hip dysplasia at age 10. I don't think I can bring myself to get another purebred or another large breed dog again. They tend to end up with so many problems and watching the pain they go through towards the end is just so heartbreaking. Mutts are the way to go, IMO. My aunt rescued a mutt puppy *years* ago. This dog was a mix of God knows how many breeds. She wasn't a small dog, either. She was about 70 lbs in her prime. That damn dog lived to be 22 YEARS OLD, and was in perfect health up until about age 19.

Our 13 year old border collie x kelpie girl is an ageing treasure. In the last few months we've noticed she can't hear us, I think her hearing is almost completely gone. She now sleeps so deeply she doesn't know we are there until we pat her, even then, sometimes we are patting her gently and she keeps sleeping then wakes, surprised to find us so close 'all of a sudden'. Last year we lost her friend, our 10 year old boy dog to cancer, he never got the chance to get truly old, it's so unfair. So now we have a 6 month old puppy who has livened up our household, and keeps our old girl active. She's very protective over the little poppet, and even has the occasional zoomie around the house and yard, much to puppy's delight. Only once every few weeks though. We love our old girl so much it hurts.

I'm a dog person, always have been. Dogs love me!? But my 16 year old dog has recently been displaying aggressive behavior when I try to pick her up. She tries to bite me and she growls and barks. I have of course takin her to the vet to discuss this. The first thing I thought was she could be in pain and with her long list of health issues she does obviously experience discomfort and I have a pain medication regiment that we're on and I am extremely attentive and aware of when her next dose will be needed. I read that older dogs who lose vision or hearing can understandably feel confused and frightened and this can cause that type of aggressive behavior as well. One of her ailments is glaucoma and she has gone completely blind in one eye and I've noticed that her hearing is also diminishing as well as her cognitive functions. She has a new neurologist, she has an oncologist, ( she has a slow-moving isolated cancer tumor in her liver that has not spread and we recently had an ultrasound and x-rays so it appears it's still isolated and we've got her on Palladia hopefully that will help I think she's too old for abdominal surgery I don't want to put her through that and the Palladia seems to be tolerated just fine) she also has an opthamologist and a cardiologist we do regular blood tests I'm on top of everything. We go outside every day several times a day and for years now I've been pushing her in a stroller taking her with me when I exercise. I've done this so much that I now have bursitis in my knee and my hip, she is definitely not sitting home alone in the dark. But I can't help but be upset when she tries to bite me and barks and growls. And I don't think it's like with a younger dog if she does that I say NO and then she doesn't get a buggy ride and then over time she'll put two and two together but I think she can't help it and it's more cognitive, *even before I lift her or put any pressure on her joints* or anything she starts in with the growling and trying to bite me. I've always been very gentle and kind with her. I don't know what to do. I guess I need to just toughen up and realize she's just going a little senile with her age and all. I guess she feels threatened when I go to pick her up? but why would she feel threatened by me? 💔😢 She let the neighbor pick her up the other day and when the neighbor went to hand her back to me she started in with the sas again. I don't know what to do. 😢 That's her in the picture with me by the way, my Sassy Senior Suki. Help! 😰 Please. 😢

My dog is a mix between, a chow chow, Australian Shepard, Swiss white shepherd, pitbull, boxer, husky, and sheltie and she just turned 11, she has never really been all that affectionate, unlike our younger dog who is a German Shepard Australian Shepard mix, but she still loves walks and playing with our younger dog, my older dog acts more like a cat when it comes to being affectionate. She wants affection but acts like she doesn’t, she’s really really sweet and still very active and can jump into our car trunk without issue still. She still loves to run and play and we often take her out to this patch of land we own so she can run and swim in the creek!

Mine is 15 ... she has become clingy .. so I take her everywhere with me ... she never used to be so clingy .. in fact she preferred staying home when she was younger .. gives her the opportunity to wreck the house.. hya ha ha... but after her mom died (she was 9 when her mom died at 16 ... since then she has become clingy .. Its not easy, but I guess we owe our dogs the same dedication and loyalty they give us .. and this matter now (because they are old) more than ever... I know her 'time is coming' so I have just decided to give her my best just like how she dedicated her entire life to my happiness...

My girl Gracie (Maltese) will be turning 17 this July 27, 2024. Last year I started seeing strange signs in her walking (it didn’t happen all the time) and now she’s her backside is rocking back and forth while sleeping and she shivers at times for no reason. Has anyone one else experienced this with their senior pup?

Yes. Right now. 😢 How is your dog? Mine shakes & pants all day. He barely eats or sleeps without gabapentin & trazadone. We have tried to let the meds work but over the weekend he has been walking on me back & forth, bruises all over me & claw/paw marks from him feeling so afraid. 😢 Him & I are both getting 2 to 3 hours of sleep every night. He looks at the door constantly waiting for my husband or will walk the halls of the house day to night like he doesn't know what he is doing. The vet told us a month ago it's separation anxiety & we keep asking for help. I think he is near passing away. He's scared and rather than going and hiding like other dogs do at the end of life he tries to literally crawl into me. I don't know how I'm gonna say goodbye. He is physically healthy & has good days but this weekend & start to the week has been the worst yet.
All the best to you. ♥️🫂

My senior dog is about 15 years old, I noticed behavior changes. She poops slot of diarrhea and urinates a lot more even in the car. She tends to stand in one place for periods of time and stare at nothing, she doesn’t eat much, she’s lost a lot of weight, she drinks lots of water and she has cataracts. Every time I take her out in public for walks, everyone assumes she is neglected as if she doesn’t eat but in reality she always has food available and water. I’ve given her strongid dewormer but I’m not sure if she has others or suffering from any other health conditions. I need to see a vet again

He’s afraid to come in the house as if he doesn’t recognize it as his. So he wants to be outside more. He also has to be coaxed into eating. He will eat, but he acts like he’s not supposed to eat the food in his bowl. Once he’s assured it’s ok, he’ll eat fine.

My dog is 13 and just recently won't jump into the car to go to the park. I know she is losing her eye sight so it makes sense. But the one behavior I can't seem to find an answer to is this..when I take her too the park we walk all around and then goto the off leash around for a bit..when I see she has has enough( bad hip) I stop her and leash her up to go back to the car.. But a few week's ago she just layed down under a tree in the grass across from the off leash area and watches the other dogs and relaxes. Which is great and just fine. But after about 45 min I try to get her to walk back to the car and if she's not done then we don't go. So my question is how do give her her me time and then get her to the car? Sometimesi don't have 2 hours to sit with her and relax. I know she feels ok health wize and it's more of a stubborn thing. She has also done this at a few other places when she just didn't feel like she wanted to leave yet.. Any advice? And I also tried a dog wagon but she won't stay in. She's a 70 lb Doberman.

I don't know what to do. I don't want to give her stimulant because my experience with those have not been good with my previous dogs who died of cancer. I just don't know not wanting to eat is an issue with older dogs.

My APBT is 15 yo she is being demanding when she wants to be fed and will not stop! She PEES where she sleeps or on the couch and even on our pillows! She is sooo, bent on getting into the trash I had to put it outside! She makes a mess of MY things and throws them around like a child having a tantrum she barks loudly for seemingly no reason and does not follow commands the way she used to. And stares up the steps as if she’s waiting for my deceased fiancé to come down the steps ! The only time she doesn’t misbehave is when she deep sleeps and I’m moving on top of all this! She will not let me out of her site, stays under my feet constantly! The peeing and eating things that aren’t food are the most disturbing I think. She doesn’t show signs of any UTI either. Help us! We have'nt been able to understand why owr now 10 year old lab/boxer mix have begin having first Food allergies, then there's something here and there so we go to the vet often, he howls all the time and we never know if it's cuz he's in pain or just want a treat? Ever night he Wanna sleep under the blanket and he howls or walk on you (he's 35 kilos), yntil he wakes up and he's littelary ruining our night sleep. If the cat is on his spot he'll how to make me remove the cat, where just last year he could be together side by side with the cat. The cat was the bully before, but now it's opposite. The 1st.vet just screwed us over, 2nd.vet found out he only could eat hypoallergenic food, but it's as if he's dissatisfied again 😥 so beside they'll check him for he's recent hotspots he got, if they can see what's going on. My life is now totally fixated around him & I'm exhausted for nothing seems to satisfy him. He acts like my 15 year old daughter! Nothing is good enough!
Could he maybe pick up on her new tern behavior? For it started around same time. And he gets what he want if he howls long enough (as long as it's not unhealthy) but I can't scratch he's belly 24/7 😓 I hope the vet has the answers.
But does anyone think he's picking up on my daughters new behavior? She has autismn and he's her best friend but now she's a teen and he's not No. 1 anymore, her friends are (which is a huge acomplishment from her side, to act more age appropriate) but maybe the dog pays a price? I'm there and has always been, it just seems not enough. I sure hope the vet or anyone can tell me what's happening? It's my 1st.dog cuz my Mom got conned while she had brain tumor and thought she'd bought an English bulldog for 2500$ 🙄 and she was dyibg so I got him eventhough I WAS afraid of dog (not anymore) 😉 but to loose him would be to loose the last piece of my mom! I hope there's a solution for I'm afraid he's in pain or just maybe just bad behavior? I'd never thought a dog could fill my heart with so much love & happiness, but he sure taught me wrong. A life without him is unbareble but he's howling is also too, cuz yeah I can't satisfy him anymore.
Great video/channel, I subbed! Thanks, Xoxo MM 🙏❤️

@Nancy La As the dog ages, their mobility will reduce, as will their need to expend energy. They will likely lose their appetite, but not always. Regardless, if their energy consumption is reduced, their food intake needs to be reduced in kind. Without this compensation, they may develop obesity or even suffer organ failure issues.
