One thing you learn in biology is that life exists over the entire surface of earth. There isn't a single inch of the planet where you can't find something living.
This cave is actually a lot of fun. It can be dangerous if you're careless but it is relatively safe and easy to find your way and not get lost , plus I have always run into a couple if other groups of people while inside so you would eventually hear someone if you actually happen to get lost. The best part is the swiss cheese holes. It is exactly how I imagine crawling and sliding through a giant hunk of swiss cheese only clay mud and rock. Excellent hide and seek. Not the most beautiful but definitely the most fun cave I have been in.
Exploring a cave for the first time was an eye-opening experience, revealing a fear I never knew I had: claustrophobia. As I descended into the depths, the sense of confinement amplified my anxiety. Despite knowing I was physically capable, a persistent fear lingered, convincing me I might not find my way back. Watching my brother disappear into narrow crevices triggered an instinctual reluctance, yet the fear of isolation compelled me to follow suit. The fear of abandonment outweighed the fear of the unknown, propelling me into spaces I initially deemed impassable. Water added another layer of intensity, intensifying the eerie atmosphere. The unnerving combination of enclosed spaces and water heightened the entire adventure, making it a harrowing yet unforgettable escapade.
The most stressful thing I can imagine here is going headfirst through a crevice no one has attempted before, where you don't know if there's a place you can even reach on the other side
Then think about getting 3 hours deep in, and knowing the only way to live is getting all the way back without issue. Just getting mixed up on direction or one rock falling is the end.

the thing that's most grateful for is they did not forget their way back. it would be very stressful to get trapped there. even if you shout, who can hear you?
id rather climb a rocky mountain than do this honestly i know both are scary AF but this scares me more. imagine losing your way and not being able to fit in any of the cracks anymore and trying to go back only to find out the way you came from is already flooded with water.
I explored that very same cave to the second waterfall with 12 others. If you are the least bit claustrophobic, or don't like being wet with soupy mud, don't go to this cave. You will come out covered in mud. But the experience was amazing as well. Unless you know the cave very well, or go with folks that do, you can easily get lost in that cave... This is NOT a tourist cave folks. Thumbs Up!
Silly question but what do the walls in the cave physically feel like? Slimy? Like at 5:22. They look soft like clay but I’m having a hard time imagining what they’re covered in? Mud? So fascinating
The walls at that time stamp were most likely not very muddy, the rock just was that color. I've been to pettyjohns many times and nothing really is slimey, if it's muddy it will look and feel more slick
This cave is only a few miles from my house! I've been in it many times. As soon as you get to the front of the entrance, your blasted with nice cold air. Something most people don't mention, is how hot it feels once you get out and touch the normal air again.. Feels like your gonna burn up! Its got some pretty dangerous drop offs and some interesting rope climbs and descents. If you go back far enough, you'll travel trough a some rooms, and a nice snake shaped pathway, and eventually there is a nice waterfall you get to wash all the mud off of you. Leading up through the main room there are a few passage ways that go up and to the top on the sides you can repel down at least 100ft. I did it once with a friend and it was terrifying! Also a little up the mountain, only a few turns up, there is a beautiful waterfall you can hike less than a mile to it and go to the top or the bottom. Very very pretty spot and there is actually a REALLY BIG hidden bird cave (vulture maybe) I found not to far above it. Also an abandoned hidden car from the pre 1950's era lies hidden off the ride side of the road path about 50 ft or so down just on the turn after the waterfall parking spot. It's easier to spot during the winter Many other fun things to see and find at Pidgeon Mountain! :)
you are right about the air being much colder near the entrance it is refreshing on a hot day! we went to that waterfall and climbed up near it but didn't see the vulture cave lol it probably was a vulture we see a lot of them in rock crevices and mines that is where they live. we did however see the car near the road! it looked like someone was driving too fast and went tumbling down the mountainside until hitting a tree. there is so much to see at pigeon mountain!
What is even worse, is that cave divers are doing this as well. And they have to deal with the anxiety of running out of air and decompression sickness as well.
When I was a child, I would get recurrent nightmares about getting stuck in a place like this. There would be an opening but it was always too small to get through. Terrifying. Absolutely terrifying.
Next time you are in Petty Johns go to Z bend and look up at the ceiling while on your back. There is a full lizard fossil skelton in the rock. I was stuck in there for about 45 minutes once waiting on two people in front of me so I plenty of time to look around. That's a pretty neat cave to explore.
@@joeclarke123 I just heard a guy who does this stuff on youtube saying. The cave has to be round and you should be wearing a helmet tho. The name of the chanel is Caveman Hikes.

It must be a strange feeling to reemerge from a cave you've explored back to the surface, now being aware of the deep and immense empty spaces just beneath your feet.
Strange indeed, to think of the "solid ground" as being more like an endless swiss-cheesy labyrinth of worm-holes, gaping abscesses and deep dark drop-offs. Fun to be there alone and have my light break or fall down into some bottomless abyss! (Hmmm?---maybe "fun" is entirely the wrong word?)
It’s a really cool feeling when you leave because that cave stays a certain temp. all year round. So when you are in summer time it’s cool inside. When you leave the cave and exit into the hot sun, it’s a weird feeling.
LOL, I can remember doing this in caves when I was a teenager, 50 years ago! One has to be careful because the risk of getting stuck is real.
The waterfalls are so cool! I wouldn't dare to go there so thanks for taking me. 10/10 would recommend 👌

Thumbs Up!

Me: enough for all of my life! 😆😆
It's easier to spot during the winter
Many other fun things to see and find at Pidgeon Mountain! :)
you are right about the air being much colder near the entrance it is refreshing on a hot day! we went to that waterfall and climbed up near it but didn't see the vulture cave lol it probably was a vulture we see a lot of them in rock crevices and mines that is where they live. we did however see the car near the road! it looked like someone was driving too fast and went tumbling down the mountainside until hitting a tree. there is so much to see at pigeon mountain!
It was better before they paved the road going up the mountain.
