I've been trying to figure out how to get my sofirn HS40 to switch between smooth and stepped ramping UI modes , and given that the hs40 seems to be using the same exact UI as the HS41 that you reviewed here , thanks to you and this here detailed review I have finally found out how to switch the smooth vs stepped ramping modes. My light was stuck in smooth ramping mode for the last two months since I bought it cause I didn't know how to change it , and have really been wanting to know how to swap over to stepped mode because the smooth ramping increases and decreases way way to rapidly for me and is almost impossible for me to be able to let off the switch in time to set it to the output level that I am wanting at the time , so only pretty much have been able to use it either all the way up at full output or "high" or all the way down to the lowest output or "low", which has been very very annoying , so thanks to you explaining how to change over to stepped mode , I am now able to easily and immediately get to the output level I am wanting at any given time simply by letting it cycle thru low medium and high ,and off course double click up to turbo, which is awesome , so just wanting to say great review and thanks for the help my friend, take care .

I just tested the usb with my phones cable, it just barely fit, i do think they should fit better I actually like that the different cords either charge or drain it, just make sure i take the appropriate one with me, 80% of the time im charging it at home anyways, i only got it to do 2-5 hour metal detecting sessions, and depending on the time of the year some of that happens after sunrise, i usually leave around 4am if i can get my butt up that early I am impressed with the modes for the most part, moonlight mode is good for sneaking around the house at night to go to the bathroom or the fridge, my stepdad is a light sleeper i dont want to turn the hall light on and we got some stuff you coule vump into in the hall Eco is good at night if inwant to be less sneaky and or i cant charge it anytime soon, 170 hours is a lot Low is probably what i will use to metal detect as it last 11 hours and gives good light I rather detect in medium but i dont particularly like the runtime 3h40m seems kinda short, maybe for short sessions its fine High amd turbo are too bright, i can see them okay if your walking a trail in the woods though but i turned them on inside and blinded myself I dont like that it goes from 11 hours in low to 3h40m in medium I feel like there should be an option between low and medium that gives you 6 or perhaps 8 hours And lastly ramp mode is useless, it should ramp a lot more slowly, couldnt really stop in the middle well, tontry and get that 6 hour run time, step mode is all i can use And really lastly this time, strobe gives you the 6 hours im after, but that would be pretty crazy to metal detect in strobe lmao😅
Hey friend. I wish you could help me. I need to buy a flashlight to use in the Amazon rainforest, high temperature and high humidity. In comparison sofirn hs41 (5000k or 6500k) and sofirn hs20. I have Sofirn D25L which has two Samsung LH351D 5000K emitters. I've had it for 2-3 years. It runs on an 18650 and has 5 output levels. It does have on board charging but it's still micro usb if that matters to you. I usually remove batteries and charge in an external charger so I don't care, but if you are camping or something, then the on board charging may matter. They still sell them and Sofirnlight is probably the least expensive place to purchase it. It only weighs about 4oz with battery and headband and it has a cri rating of >90.
So on the base of the box it says HS41 Black then SST20 6000-6500k. So you would assume its a very cool white but really its now. i feel like its more of a neutral to my eyes. I also think the reason they have between 6000 and 6500 may be the tint shift but again the whole thing isnt super white to my eyes at all and i got it straight from their website with my own money its not some beta test set..
If they widened the USB slot, then you would just go and get even fatter cables wouldn't you? lol. All lights would end up having to be massive. I like a good whinge (thank god you don't whinge about 18650s not fitting and c to c cables etc) and I do like the smaller less conspicuous usb charging port absolutely fine but I don't use bloated cables as I am happy with the cables that come with the product that work! Seriously though, I'm not just trying to have a whinge or criticise as your vids are great so don't take anything the wrong way. I'm just trying to present another perspective to be considered. It's a bit like you create the problem and then blame the gear which didn't have a problem until you went to use it how it was not meant to be used or with gear that just isn't suitable that you introduced separately.
@@craigs7181 I'm a sort of Victor Meldrew I think. Just picked up a couple of Sofirn SC21 45% off in red with Anduril and battery for £20 each on the UK Amazon. I wish I could stop finding these good deals! but I still think the £28 for the SC33 was much better! Liking the If22A (£18 but I had to clean out the head of dust/dirt). First thrower and now I see how everyone should have at least one of these and the 22 is a pretty good one. I was out testing a few lights like my Sofirn SP10 V3 beforehand to see if I really did want to get the SC21 and I also tested my TrustFire MC1 alongside and outdoors on Turbo that tiny light is brilliant. Don't think the run time would be to long and it's not great on low or mid out doors but on high/turbo it has a great hotspot and spill and the cool white Cree I like outdoors. It beat my high CRI Pokelit and SP10 to my eyes and at least it uses the same batteries as the SC21. Clearing some more storage space this morning.
@@geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz The SC21 Pro is a good little light. I have several of them, but they are all Anduril 1, which is ok with me. I have 8 SP10 Pro's scattered around the house and of those 8, two have exceptional output. Not sure why, but they are noticeably brighter than the others. Sofirnlight had a great sale awhile back and I couldn't resist. I also gave a few away for gifts. I put Vapcell's new F12 14500 3A 1250mAh cell in a few of them for extended run time. They are the only 14500 cells I ever tested that actually met their claimed capacity, actually they exceeded it a bit (1279-1310mAh). I got them (6) from Liion Wholesale here in Pennsylvania. They were only one that had the button top version in stock. Seems like an excellent battery. I have an IF22A but I don't use it very much. It does throw well but offers very little spill unless it's on high or turbo, and then it has a blindingly bright hot spot if you hit anything close to you. My Convoy M21B is similar with an Osram CULPM1 6A but has more usable spill at lower output and it handles heat better. My Convoy 4x18a with an SBT90 is my best thrower. The 10% setting reaches 300 meters and it has a very large hot spot with wide spill, but it isn't very pocketable. lol
Ha ha probable. :-) Joking aside I was very surprised to have a new Anker cable which is very popular laterally grinding its way in to the slot, I dont think its unreasonable to be surprised that one of the most popular cables barely fit. Dont worry mate this is a free speech you can say whatever you like as thats the only way to drill down to the truth of any matter. I completely get what you are saying the mass market dont give a hoot on some of the things I bring up, you are 100 percent right there. However bear in mind if i miss any of these things I get comments saying why didnt I mention this and that. I just wonder why an engineer didnt say "go buy me 20 type-c cables and lets see how much clearance we need" as this smaller rectangular flap and slot are new to sofirn and also Wurkkos lights right now. Someone somewhere decided this was ok. and it is with their cables but some people use after market cables. Anyway thanks for the input, never worry about posting your opinion here we are all here to enjoy lights and help each other. I dont have some fragile ego where i think im right all the time, 99% of the time the people commenting know more than i do! ha ha ha :-) Have a great weekend.
Its my job to do all the complaining how dare they. :-) (Joking aside I agree the cable provided does work fine, but aftermarket has issues so I thought it best to make mention of it especially when a well known brand like anker barely fits.)
I will say for me personally I had no issues with it. What is your ideal size? is it 18650 and under or do you prefer the stripped back lightweight ones like Nitecore NU21 and NU33 etc?
I love watching these just for your c to c cable nightmare never ending horror story! Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh! BUT, given that you clearly state that the Sofirn charges absolutely fine using a c to c from a wall socket, that to me indicates that it is therefore your Xtar power bank that is the problem and not the Sofirn! Ah ha! If you go out without checking if you can charge something then I think it's more a problem of you not doing even the most basic prep than blaming the equipment but that's just me. Sure point out the problem just in case some-body has one of those power banks that could be a problem. I charged my new If22a (has power bank function) with my battery power bank that only has usb A output and obviously there was no problem. Your specific set-up depends on what the Xtar decided to do and in this instance it was wrong and why do you not blame the Xtar that this could not be over ridden and it forced into OUT mode? Just saying (of course whinging lol) but I think you have been ignoring or blind to perhaps the real culprit in all of this, the perhaps not so innocent Xtar which worked using an A to C cable but then decided not with a C - C and could not be overridden. With my basic power bank the C connection is only for input. Does the Xtar C to C charge other power bank function lights without switching to IN mode? If so then there is a question of why it switches to IN with the Sofirn? but it's definitely the Xtar doing the switching. It's a curious one and I've never really understood how those C connections can be both inputs and outputs but I've never looked into it greatly. I am not surprised if a problem arises connecting two USB-C items that can be both inputs and outputs. Say you wanted to charge the Xtar from the light then all would be fine but there is no way of selecting which function you desire on either the light or the Xtar so why blame only the Sofirn? I think there needs to be more proof that it is purely a problem of the Sofirn and I hope you can get to the bottom of it and lets us know either way.
I too thought that the Xtar might be the problem, but I also think it may have something to do with which device has the higher voltage, and that may determine which device does the charging and which device receives the charge. The Xtar was just charging the light and it obviously had to have a voltage drop. The light just had a boost in voltage and perhaps its voltage was higher than the Xtar causing the light to start charging the Xtar. Just a thought.
@@craigs7181 I'm looking at this now as I really do want to understand what is going on with these. For example, what happens if I you attach one Xtar to another Xtar? What does what and how is it decided and are both right and wrong at the same time. Same if you attach two Sofirn? Maybe it is decided on charge levels as you say? I did wonder about that myself also but I'm going to have a look around and see if I can find anything on it. It's a good one. It must be down to how the Xtar decides whether to be in the IN or Out mode. What doe sit base this on and maybe it just switches to IN when it sees another power supply but again what if it saw another Xtar would it then be based on which had the higher voltage? This would drive anyone nuts lol.
@@geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz I don't have an Xtar power bank or an HS41, so I can't test my theory. I do have some half charged 21700's though! lol I'm so happy my new SC33 doesn't have auxiliary led's and no power bank function. It's just a light! And it puts out a lot of it!!!
@@craigs7181 Apparenty Chat GPT says this which makes sense and would seem to indicate to use the USB A to C cable provided! It can't be a good idea to butt heads together of two power supplies is all the takeaway I need to settle this. ChatGPT If you connect two USB-C power adapters together with a USB-C cable, it is likely that the devices will attempt to negotiate the charging protocol. Depending on the specific adapters and devices involved, this may result in one adapter supplying power to the other, or it may result in no power being supplied at all. It is important to note that this is not a recommended or safe method of charging devices, as it could potentially damage the devices or the adapters. It is always best to use the recommended charging methods for your specific devices.
@@craigs7181 I bought the SC33 5k and like it but I feel like I am going to drop it when I am holding it up and using the rear switch and I wear large size gloves so don't have small hands. Might need that lanyard. Maybe I'm just more used to the smaller lights like my SC32. Wish the 33 could hold that amazing Turbo just for the hell of it.
Brill review looks like i will go for this light yes it has a small draw back i am not a fan of High CRI it has never worried me as for the power bank just take a single charger for the battery or there is nothing wrong or is a hardship of taking another spare battery if your taking a power bank that is more of a weight problem than another cell

I actually like that the different cords either charge or drain it, just make sure i take the appropriate one with me, 80% of the time im charging it at home anyways, i only got it to do 2-5 hour metal detecting sessions, and depending on the time of the year some of that happens after sunrise, i usually leave around 4am if i can get my butt up that early
I am impressed with the modes for the most part, moonlight mode is good for sneaking around the house at night to go to the bathroom or the fridge, my stepdad is a light sleeper i dont want to turn the hall light on and we got some stuff you coule vump into in the hall
Eco is good at night if inwant to be less sneaky and or i cant charge it anytime soon, 170 hours is a lot
Low is probably what i will use to metal detect as it last 11 hours and gives good light
I rather detect in medium but i dont particularly like the runtime 3h40m seems kinda short, maybe for short sessions its fine
High amd turbo are too bright, i can see them okay if your walking a trail in the woods though but i turned them on inside and blinded myself
I dont like that it goes from 11 hours in low to 3h40m in medium
I feel like there should be an option between low and medium that gives you 6 or perhaps 8 hours
And lastly ramp mode is useless, it should ramp a lot more slowly, couldnt really stop in the middle well, tontry and get that 6 hour run time, step mode is all i can use
And really lastly this time, strobe gives you the 6 hours im after, but that would be pretty crazy to metal detect in strobe lmao😅
Hey friend.
I wish you could help me. I need to buy a flashlight to use in the Amazon rainforest, high temperature and high humidity. In comparison sofirn hs41 (5000k or 6500k) and sofirn hs20. In your opinion, which is the best option? If you have another model or brand option, let me know.
I thank you for your attention.
What's an alternative to this but with a much higher CRI?
Lumjntop hl3a is pretty good, I have two on is nuetral in high cri. It is flattop 18650 with no onboard charging.
@@apcwjwThose are hard to find at least for me in the USA.
@@apcwjw Good shout, the light on that is rather beautiful and its a nice compact light.
@@Overonator Are acebeam any easier to find where you live? They do some nice high CRI lights. If you dont mind a really compact light then the H16 is a very nice high CRI headlamp: ua-cam.com/video/vdcuIDDtXDY/v-deo.html
What tint is your HS41?
So on the base of the box it says HS41 Black then SST20 6000-6500k. So you would assume its a very cool white but really its now. i feel like its more of a neutral to my eyes. I also think the reason they have between 6000 and 6500 may be the tint shift but again the whole thing isnt super white to my eyes at all and i got it straight from their website with my own money its not some beta test set..
Excellent and detailed review. Thanks
Very welcome. If you have any questions I'm here to help.
Appreciate it. Just ordered one for an upcoming motorcycle trip in Thailand.@@TrailTrek
🤣 So funny 🤣
Too heavy ....21700 headlamp 😢
I do have some half charged 21700's though! lol
I'm so happy my new SC33 doesn't have auxiliary led's and no power bank function.

If you connect two USB-C power adapters together with a USB-C cable, it is likely that the devices will attempt to negotiate the charging protocol.
Thank you :-) Sounds like this will suit you great. This is a high value light from Sofirn and i think you will enjoy this one.
