I cannot believe you never mentioned the movie Legally Blonde which encapsulates this dichotomy of female choices. I am joking of course. At least in that movie being a girl boss did not involve losing your femininity or ethics. Also, if we want femininity without consumerism…..that is called female tradition, which many modern people seem to be allergic to because they view any tradition as restraint and thus not something you want. People cannot have it both ways. They cannot say they do not want commercialized femininity while also refusing the opposite of culture and tradition.
Also, when being harmonious or similar is proverbially a sin you are going to get obsessive individualism. Combine that with commercialism as you get predictable results. That stacked on top of the other factors mentioned before gets a chaotic tangle.

Yeah there are a lot of studies that show that purposefully highlighting the differences between men and women lead to women being less assertive in the work place. Going for promotions less, negotiating pay and raises less, going for leadership roles less often. We really should not devalue or value something because it is "feminine", we should value it because people like it.

femininity is both praised, and expected to be the goal of a woman and also demonized and deemed shallow. we can truly never win.
edit: i just thought of this after sending the comment. it seems to me that women are only allowed femininity when they're forced into it. if you want to live femininity in your own way people say you're shallow etc. if you live femininity according to what others say it should be ur praised for being "traditional" "high value" or whatever. but the femininity they want is mostly an unachievable standard.

The "clinicalization" of the girl dinner trend has struck me as odd because, as someone who's worked the closing shift at every job I've had, "girl dinner" represents not having the energy to cook a full meal. And I was like oh....no wait my girl dinners are because I'm too tired to ever cook an actual meal sometimes. Like I actually think girl dinner could be a really beneficial tool to talking about how we can not burn ourselves out so much that we don't even have the energy to give our body a basic need but instead, it's just being talked about as just like another quirky unhealthy thing girls do.

This! I took "girl dinner" to mean something that is quick and easy because "girls" or rather women are tired AF and want to eat without spending too much time or effort. Once women have children or a spouse, they can't get away with "girl dinner" because the other household members demand a "full dinner" that requires time and effort like chicken and rice for example, both things that are not as quick and easy say the stereotypical girl dinner of charcuterie (or a collection of snacks).

I think the problem with “girl dinner” and how it comes off as disordered is that, well, the implication that it’s girly/feminine to not eat a lot or a full meal. I don’t think it’s always disordered or smth, but. It is another example of how these things affect us.
I’m sure plenty of girls are getting enough calories from girl dinner. But there is something uncomfortable about “girl dinner” being tiny snacks and not like, a full meal?
Edit: I myself enjoy snacks for dinner from time to time so no shame in how people choose to eat, it’s merely the terminology I feel is a bit odd.

I myself don’t eat that much and I always feel weird or guilty for mot doing that. Sometimes I would but most times my portions are pretty small and only eat about once or twice a day. Girl dinner helped me in feeling valid for eating that much because I was still eating either way. It made me want to eat more because I could just grab whatever and say it was my meal of the day. @@undercoverfangirl5491 it originates from someone comparing their dinner to that of a medieval peasant. The take that it's normalizing small portions is kinda incongruous with that. The comparison highlights the lack and almost scavenging nature of plates full of random crackers, an ice cream pop, a slice of cheese, and piece of proscuitto. Plus, it's never been the norm that women eat large plates or "such big portions." There's always been an association between women and smallness, in stature and in appetite. Food for women is typically marketed as light or fluffy and portioned smaller than their male counterparts. You see this even in foods typically associated with women like fruit, muesli/granolas, salads, and light creams. Even today, women will order smaller dishes on dates because a large appetite in women is considered unseemly and masculine. if anything, women with big appetites are othered. The thing with calling it an eating disorder is interesting. I'm sure this could be considered disordered eating, but I'm not a doctor so not going there. When I was struggling with disordered eating, this mish mosh "girl dinner" I had before the phrase started lol was the only thing I could get in. That tiny plate of five grapes, two chicken nuggets, and a popsicle was better than starving myself. I would trick myself into eating tiny random bites of food to trick myself into eating anything. I would eat before my disorder realized what I was doing, and sometimes that saved me a lot of pain.

Man, how sad that people are so obsessed online. I’m never going to let online content or “fashion” dictate what I wear, do, how I live my life. I’ve got a degree to earn, I’ve got musical instruments to go play, video games, calling my name. There is so much more than being sucked into TikTok and different cultures. And it’s funny if you just turn your phone off and go outside that shit doesn’t exist. If you go talk to your neighbors, that shit doesn’t exist. When I go to work, that shit doesn’t exist. These young people don’t understand. There is such a large difference between all this manufactured content online versus the reality that we really live in. They are creating the matrix day by day that the alpha males complain about. I don’t wish to live in that matrix.
We now have micro seasons and faster than ever fashion. I buy clothes and wear them for 5-10 years. I choose VERY carefully, curating what I like, looks good, coordinates well. I’m LIVING for the Y2K boom right now because I can relive my childhood. And I will cherish these huge pants I bought for years to come- AND they’re petite for my 5’4” frame. So they won’t get torn up like pants in the 90’s/00’s. So they will last.
Just do what you want. I know I do.

This has been a thing for decades. As humans we crave to feel like we belong to a community. As far as the girl trends go, a lot of them are lighthearted and are centred around women not taking ourselves too seriously and not being afraid to be hyper feminine which I think is a really positive message since girls have been told for years that they need to be different than the stereotypical woman to be desirable. But I definitely agree with you when it comes to other trends on tiktok especially ones that have to do with having 50 different aesthetics every single day. Coconut girl, black cat girl, dark feminine, light feminine, coquette girl, okok girl, lalala girl. Like the list goes on and on it’s insane.

  • @sashahoney_

amazing video! totally agree with everything you said. It seems like all these trends are about wanting, wanting a new product, wanting to look certain way, wanting to give off a certain vibe but most of all wanting a sense of belonging. Yet in the same breath, most of these 'girl' trends are actually very exclusive, in fact the majority of women if we look beyond the demographic of teenage girls/millenial women on TikTok, do not hold a place in these spaces or the trends, especially the aesthetic focused ones, as they are so inaccessible. Obviously no-one is forced to partake in them and its targeted at teenage girls but it is undeniably constructing a widespread representation of what femininity and womanhood is (or I guess girlhood) and its misleading. This is the main thing I take issue with because in many ways people are unknowingly reconstructing a box for women to fit into. It's very nuanced and often all in good fun, and I do think there are lots of positive facets to it especially for teenage girls. I am all for breaking down the negative connotations associated with traditionally feminine interests, hobbies and appearances. However as this bleeds into things like girl math and the 'girl' aesthetics I do see this unfortunately reinforcing harmful gender stereotypes regardless of whether the intention is silly and funny or not. We can't seem to strike a balance with modern feminist trends that focus on our intelligence and worth as people without relating that to corporate success, and allowing non-masculine appearances to hold equal worth to masculine ones without pushing all women into a "girly" box. Another 'girly" trend currently being reacting to your face with an aged filter and most people being mortified without stopping to think about why they are so scared of ageing and how youthful beauty standards are harmful especially to women, and how this trend and reaction only perpetuates that. I also find it weird that so much of Gen Z is interested in breaking down gender and criticising it as a social contruct yet we constantly see these trends that just repackage those binary constructs. There is a lack of trends that promote real introspection and conversation and that's what I hope to see more of. A sense of individuality that comes from within rather than your external appearance will always be more fulfilling and unifying. Learning about and empathising with and sharing the stories of girls and woman who lead very different lives than you is feminism, is girlhood and is womanhood. Whilst it's great to have all this fun, these trends no matter how "silly" they are affect us all in very real ways, and these platforms and trends hold real power. It's important that we check ourselves and the ways we might be perpetuating the very things we're trying to fight against.

If you have I think you could make a WHOLE video about Wattpad I think there’s so many effects that it’s had on girls especially younger girls, including me when I read on it at 13 and am now 20, I mostly mean the romance, teen fiction, and young adult genre (idk abt fan fiction but perhaps ? 😭). But I’m just thinking of how toxic some of those books are and tropes. You see books like these on shelves now too.
Also I totally agree about the “hyper-niche” thing it’s becoming too much like you’re not gonna be the most unique individual person out there it’s okay to be similar from some people and different too but that and wanting to put a label on yourself is useless it is totally like a brand. Let’s just like what we like and not change based on trends.

There was actually this big discourse on tiktok about girl dinner because a lot of girls were using it as a way to show off how little they eat which is what shifted the tone of girl dinner from this fun light hearted joke to it being a contest to see who eats less. In reality girl dinner is mainly just about not being bothered to cook a meal because of the ongoing joke that girls are always tired. It’s not about portion size it’s about us waking up from a 5 hour nap and taking whatever is in our pantry’s or fridges and eating it because we’re too tired to cook. I’ve literally eaten a can of sweetcorn for dinner cuz I wasn’t bothered to make food

I think the reason the use of the words girl can be a little offensive is because it covertly illustrates how womenhood in a patriarchal society is rejected. The desirability and inadvertently the social capital of women is dictated by our youth and naïveté. By empowering women with language we use it would contradict the patriarchal agenda. So it seems somewhat innocent but the reality is a little more insidious

As someone whose been doing this girl dinner thing without knowing or giving it a name and doing it for 3 months I can say it’s a eating disorder having a backseat cooking instructor when starting to cook has caused me to fear cooking in isolation or around persons considered as backseat cookers and skill issues is not a problem I have when cooking or you can just call it cooking anxiety what do I know

I was brought back to this video now that we also have “girl hobbies” which includes such a variety as going shopping and getting a little treat. I feel like this adaptation of the trend just shows how consumeristic we’ve become. Instead of working hard at a hobby you enjoy, we can just buy stuff and get coffee. And that’s all we’re fit for, because we’re just teen girls in our twenties.

Honestly, all of these aesthetic/label trends remind me of adolescent development.
    - I figure teenagers are on TikTok more.
    - I feel like adolescents look to social media to figure out how the world is.
    - I feel like corporations know that’s a vulnerable population and parents are willing to spend money.
    - I think 20 year olds relate to teenagers in not knowing where they fit into the world.
    - I think adolescents have more of a hold on pop culture then we give them credit for.
Those are my bullet points lol. I think a lot of people will age out of it. Also I am a 17-year-old girl with a Mom whose a high school counselor lol.

I appreciate your analysis of the evolution of "girl" in the global lexicon. It's truly become a cultural thing that can have such varying use and messages, and also can be commodified by capitalism.

I think as long as you are doing something for yourself, not for other people that’s what matters. If Barbiecore (for example) makes you happy, then go for it. But if you’re doing it just bc it’s the newest trend, then you’re just wasting your money.
