An acquaintance lost his partner a couple years back because she had a tooth infection that went septic. It happened so fast, too. Despite what people are saying in the comments (that it's merely comestic) it is also for health reasons. When you have overcrowded teeth you're more likely to get tartar and cavities because they're harder to clean. I just fixed my teeth with Invisalign at 23. My bottom teeth were overcrowded and I used to get more plaque buildup in those teeth that were crowded. Now that they're aligned they don't get that plaque anymore. I brush my teeth well and floss everyday and it still happened, but I've never had any cavities or tartar though.

I am in my late 20s. When I was younger my parents had good insurance so I had regular dental care. All of my siblings except for me got braces. My older sibling needed it more, but I am unsure about my younger siblings.
I have always had some crowding but nothing crazy. As an adult I now also have great benefits. At my last dental cleaning the dentist came in talking about braces. I was shocked because this is the first my (almost) 30yo self is hearing about braces, so I asked if it was needed for health reasons. He said that it wasn't, I would be fine if I diligently flossed my teeth.
There are some people who need braces, but it's mostly cosmetic. Another way to prey on people's insecurities to get money.

I find that so interesting, because in the country I live in now, a lot of people get braces in adulthood. After going for a consultation myself when I was in college, I realise that it's because of the high cost for orthodontic care, which most people can't afford for their children. When I grew up in private school, I knew a few kids with braces, but only one adult. Now, I even know someone in his 60s with braces, and honestly, it inspires me to keep improving myself as I get older. I never did follow up on the consultation, but I really want to when I can afford it.
There's also a fake braces trend here, which is connected to the image of braces as a symbol of status and wealth. I haven't heard of veneer techs here, but I'm sure the trend will get here soon.

I do agree flex culture is also a huge part of, but also, I met someone here who got veneers from a "veneer tech" but she hadn't gone in for a cleaning in years-- she said the veneers were "cheaper" 😢 and she didn't have traditional dental insurance. I was born without the teeth on either side of my two front teeth which is an extremely common congenital defect. I had an ungodly amount of money pumped into my mouth by my very generous single mom to ensure that my skull grew without problems down the line but this left big gaps where the teeth would go. For years I wore fake ones to hide it but my puppy ate my retainer and so now I'm kinda stuck like this. There are people who have normalized it, but it's a huge insecurity for me because of the implications that accompany missing teeth. Despite me never having had a cavity in my life and otherwise fairly good dental health, there's always that concern people will look down on you or make assumptions about your history because of it.
So it really boggles my mind that people are putting their lives in danger to fix something that wasn't broken just to show off. I understand there are social pressures involved. I'm guessing they're trying to make up for their own insecurities. But your health is so precious and can be lost in an instant. It's NEVER worth it to cut corners or pursue flash in the pan vanity trends.

veneers are PURELY cosmetic, and they place a thin layer (of composite, porcelain, zirconia, etc) over the front of the tooth to make it appear whiter or more uniform. the issue is, a lot of ppl don’t know the difference!
so you end up with an insecure 20-something assuming that they’re getting something to just make their teeth look nicer, but in reality they end up with a full mouth of something normally reserved for unsalvageable, decaying teeth

I grew up in Ireland, and just ten years ago braces weren’t very common here. I got them because my overbite was so bad that eating was difficult, but I was one of the only kids in my school with them. Nowadays they are more common here, and I think that’s generally a good thing but I’m afraid that veneer ‘clinics’ will start popping up too. I really hope they don’t, I can imagine people like my mother who wished they had straighter teeth falling for it.

There DEFINITELY is a set of physical expectations that gay men constantly hold themselves to & expect other gay men to follow. Having perfect teeth is pretty high on that list when it comes to even being considered attractive in predominately queer male spaces.

Even teeth whitening to the extent that americans do it, is not common over here. I imagine that hundred of years from now archeologists will identify well-preserved skulls as american through the massive difference in color between their teeth and the rest of their bones lmao. I didn’t want them, and i had a tooth gap which i loved, and i wish i still had, but the worst part is when they got removed my dentist ripped off the enamel on all my teeth. I have white scars on all my teeth, and my dentist said not to worry and they would go away. Come to find out after i saw a different dentist, that isn’t normal, i cant ever get my enamel back and now i just have to have these tooth scars forever and im extremely cavity prone now which i wasn’t before. And i have to use prescription tooth paste that is like chalk. The braces weren’t medically necessary for me and i wish i had a say in it especially since i was a year away from being an adult

  • @zenyuyue
    @zenyuyue 18 днів тому +2

I’m from Europe and I get my teeth checked/cleaned at least once a year (it’s quite a normal thing in my country), tho for example in the UK most ppl never go to the dentist cause it’s not very accessible sadly. Last year I asked if they could do an x-ray for my wisdom teeth (usually happens every 2 years) cause I felt like they were pushing my other teeth. That’s how I found out that 2 of them were growing diagonally and that I had a cyst in my jaw :( so I got all of them removed. I only realized afterwards that all the headaches, neck and shoulder pain I had been experiencing came from my teeth and cyst. If sm pain can come from a naturally occurring issue, just imagine what getting bad veneers will do to your teeth and the nerves in your body, no thank you. I also started getting my teeth corrected after that and honestly, sure I think my smile looks nicer, but it’s also way easier to clean my teeth! I’m 24 and most ppl I know got their teeth corrected in high school, but I would definitely encourage ppl of any age to consider getting their teeth corrected if they are able to, not for the aesthetics, but for longterm healthy teeth. Just hoping that instead of putting money towards veneers ppl will use it for actual dental care (cause even bad veneers aren't cheap so whhyy). A quick fix for being healthy doesn’t exist and just looking "healthy" shouldn’t be the goal.

I personally dont see braces as cosmetic, but thats just my personal opinion. They do a lot to line up your teeth and optimize your bite to make it healthy, particularly for your jaw muscles. Invisilign reduces my jaw pain and night grinding of my teeth. They also helped with a swallowing issue i had. Aesthetics FOR SURE is a part of it, but tbh i think braces are still very much a medical necessity. I think we view dental procedures in the US as luxorious or less necessary just bc of how shite our medical system is and what insurance typically covers. But braces to me are very much medically necessary not just for aesthetics and i wish insurance did more to cover these needed procedures!

It's bonkers that safe veneers from a legit dentist are stupid expensive--even with insurance. I've been quoted over $1k to cover just 4 teeth, and given a ~10 year lifespan before they need to be replaced. The thing is, I've had epoxy bondings (basically a custom resin veneer) on those 4 teeth for over 10 years and they're still fine. Even my dentist who would profit from slapping veneers in my skull has told me there's no reason to invest unless something breaks.

Braces are not aesthetics procedure. Straight teeth create many problems and its something that should be tackled. Also the reason people in West need braces its because of horrible western diet full of soft squishy food like toast bread, cookies, hot dogs, jam, french fries, canned food etc. - there is just not enough chewing for teeth to develop properly. In places where people eat a lot of hard raw plant food like tubers they have beautiful straight teeth.
Braces is just another price we pay for unhealthy western lifestyle. Its wild people think straight teeth are somewhat unnatural and artifical when its completely normal and achievable if healthy diet is given to a child.

They tried so hard to convince my impoverished family that I needed braces because of my gapped teeth. I had read about the uselessness of braces and put my foot down so that my grandparents didn't sign onto a $3k bill. Fast forward to 26 years old, and almost every gap has naturally closed itself with time alone. The one gap I still have is very slight. Are my teeth straight and beautiful? No. Are they healthy and well cared for? ABSOLUTELY. And I can proudly say I've never dropped bands to get them to look a certain way.

As a European the whole discussion is very interesting because it shows the various approachs regarding healthcare. It seems that in the US everything, including healthcare and dentistry is a product and quality is not always the most important criteria. In Europe, thanks to basic health system and preventive dentistry as kids, we have a decent healthcare quality and braces as kids also help to keep your teeth healthy. Also a dentist would never suggest to have braces if you don't need them, they will not try to sell you a product based on pure aesthetics if there is not a real medical need. Veneers are stil rare in Europe and people mostly go to Turkey to get some.

braces aren't mainly for cosmetic purposes! crowding in your teeth can make them harder to clean and lead to a higher rate of cavities and gum disease, and almost everyone who needs braces needs to have their bite corrected through the use of rubber bands because a bad bite can lead to your teeth wearing unevenly or chipping and jaw problems as you age. getting braces at a younger age is a preventative measure to ensure that kids can clean their teeth properly for the rest of their lives, which is especially important because bad oral hygiene can lead to whole body problems including heart disease.

I have kind of accepted my odd smile and slightly out of place jaw. However my two front teeth are semi-fake (I broke them in half falling as a kid) and as a result are much more yellow than the rest. I genuinely had not paid much attention to it until my dentist brought it up recently, suggesting that I do get them whitened with the clinic. I now have another mouth insecurity that I have to overcome BECAUSE my dentist brought attention to it, and I will never forgive them for it.
