Do it, Billy! Every single day is a perfect day to drink a Barleywine. Those temperatures make it a better experience, though. 27 F and super windy. Not cool. Cheers, buddy!
~~~ Wow! Noice !! You just reminded me of two things. I'm currently out of ANY Jacki O's of any kind, but.................. I DO have a Barleywine from Perennial called Vermilion. "So I got that workin' for me." Nice review. CHEERS !!!
I know you're in Florida now, Gregory, but it's 100% unacceptable to not have any Jackie O's in the fridge when you're a beer nerd and from Ohio. Not cool, man. You better work on that ... NOW! LOL! I've had Vermillion from Perennial and it's a tasty one. Hope you dig it, brother! Thanks, sir! Cheers!
I've never had Jackie O but I've had stuff from private press brewing and I think the brewery came from over there. I'll have to go and look it up to be sure. I'm sure it's freaking amazing!!!
You're 100% right. Brad Clark, who was the founding head brewer of JO's, moved out to CA and started Private Press. I know it's tough to get your hands on their stuff -- and I'll probably never get to try 'em out -- but it's cool you guys have another top-tier brewery in California that is pumping out fantastic beer, especially barrel-aged goodness. Cheers, Jesse!
@averagejoe716 I just became a member of private press this year!! 😉 I'm looking foward to trying a lot for their stuff I'll have to try and get some extra bottles for share!
Nice review! What’s funny is my novice Barleywine palate preferred the BBA Brick Kiln by a little bit. Lol. I still liked this a ton though. Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad you enjoyed it so much though. They really do kill it with the big barrel aged beers. They’re good across the board though. I’d honestly put their Belgian style sours up there as well. I’ve been very impressed with those at the brewery, but in smaller pours. That might be too much to get through by yourself with the acidity though if I sent you any of those. Haha Also that callout on the strawberry candies took me way back! My Grandma always had a ton of those.
HOW DARE YOU BRING YOUR UNQUALIFIED NOVICE PALATE TO THE DISCUSSION, CURTIS?!? Away with you ... ... LMAO! I could see some folks enjoying BBA Brick Kiln more. All personal preference, of course. This was more rich, decadent and complex, IMO. Similar flavors, but it also seemed more well-rounded. Both were absolutely delicious, but this took the cake for me. Thanks again for sending both beers, and I will NEVER turn down a BA beer from Jackie O's, haha! I've had a few of their sour beer, and they were pretty good, too. I don't love their year-round or seasonal offerings as much, though. Not bad, but they shine with their BA program, IMO. My grandma used to have an entire bag of candy in her purse at all times. She'd go to the grocery store every week or two and load up on the loose mixed candy. It was great! Those strawberry candies are some of my favorite, but also loved the root beer barrels and anything caramel/butterscotch. Cheers, buddy!
@ I DO have a novice palate for Barleywine for sure. Haha. I just haven’t had enough. I do agree that the Brick Kiln was more straight forward with the flavors and Endolith was more complex. I also had the Brick Kiln on tap a few times which I actually enjoyed more than the bottle for some reason. Probably was just atmosphere. Their sours are very good. Their IPAs are pretty good but lack the pop that I’m used to from the top tier brewers. They also have a habit of having way too many fruited wheats, lagers, cream ales etc., but that’s just not my preference usually. I forgot about the root beer barrels too! I feel like our Grandmas shopped at the same store. Hahaha. I did love those strawberry candies though.
Once you get more under your belt, you'll probably see/feel the differences, but one thing you'll learn: JO's is one of the best at 'em. I've tried so many BBA Barleywines and they still rank up there for me! A lot of their base beer is just meh in terms of interest for me. They did have a Rye IPA that was great, too. Forget the name of it. I feel like so many grandmas of kids from the 80s and 90s had the same bag of candy in their purse, haha!
@ I’m definitely learning how good their barrel aged stuff is for sure. I remember last year was the first time I think I had bourbon county I believe and I remembered liking the BBA Dark Apparition better. Haha. They did all have the same candy it sounds like. Lol.
I have never seen that from Jackie O's. I only ever see the same handful of beers from them at the beer stores. It seems that other reviewers have much better luck finding Jackie O's beers than I do. As I have mentioned before, barleywine is very hit or miss for me. This one sounds like something I would like to try.
They release so many beers! Not complainin', especially when it comes to their barrel-aged offerings, but it's hard to keep up. Barleywines + Jackie O's = deliciousness. Not sure if you've ever had one from them, but worth seeking out, for sure. Cheers, Anderson!
Nope, but it looks awesome! I have their Iron Furnace that I picked up back in November at Red, Wine & Brew in Mentor, OH. I will be reviewing that in the next few months, and I'm stoked!
Nice I’ll be on the lookout for that review. Don’t believe I had that one before. My go to beers in Cleveland are from masthead. They have very nice selection if you get a chance to try them.
Love me some Masthead! I've reviewed eight or nine of their beers on the channel, and have their Rye Whiskey BA Coffee Underverse in my fridge to review in the next few months, as well. Next time I'm in Cleveland, I have to check out the brewery, as I haven't been yet.
That beer sounds delicious 😋 i think I'm to drink a barley wine today or tomorrow 32° cheers 🍻
I can’t wait to crack this one.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did, David. An absolutely stellar beer!
Cheers!
Had the Endolith last night and it was great. Had to take my time with it bc the ABV was getting to me. Lol! @@averagejoe716
Awesome, man! I'm sure you'll get close and personal with their beer in the near future.
I had that one. I think I paid like 11$. Keep the good work buddy!
Nice, man! That price point = fantastic for something this good. Wish we got JO's in Buffalo, NY. At least Ohio isn't too far away, haha!
Cheers!
I’m in Cleveland so maybe I get a discounted rate. Have you tried the beer overcoil by them?
Nope, but it looks awesome! I have their Iron Furnace that I picked up back in November at Red, Wine & Brew in Mentor, OH. I will be reviewing that in the next few months, and I'm stoked!
