  • Today is Day 26 of "All Imperial Beer Theme Month" here on the channel, and the beer I'm reviewing comes from the Griffin Claw Brewing Company (‪@griffinclawbrewingcompany3669‬), and it's their Flying Buffalo (Double Barrel Reserve), the 2020 vintage. This is a Russian Imperial Stout that is aged in bourbon and rye whiskey barrels. I've had a few other variants within their Flying Buffalo series, and they've been quite good, so I'm pretty excited about this one. Let's see how it is! I also want to give a huge thanks to a very good friend of mine, and longtime viewer of the channel, Jeff (‪@nojinx4034‬), for this beer!

    Commercial Description:
This extra special reserve Russian Imperial Stout went through our strict Flying Buffalo aging process in bourbon barrels for 10 months before a second sleep of 4 months in freshly emptied Rye Whiskey barrels. Under the watchful eye of our head brewmaster, this double barrel process results in a complex, smooth, smoky, earthy, oaky, and intensely delicious stout experience. Possibly the most intricate Buffalo yet to take flight.

That was actually colder than it is here, Billy! Right now it's 32 F and sunny.

Never had the double BA version, but back in 2023 I had the 2020-version of Flying Buffalo BA Russian Imp. Stout (9 months in BB). Nose: Heavy bourbon aroma. Taste: Plenty of bourbon, dark chocolate, with hints of coffee, vanilla and liquorice. Smoooooooooth moutfeel. Sweet but not overly sweet. A bit thin, but really, really tasty. A bit of warming in my chest. 15 USD a can,-but worth the prize in my opinion. 4/5 Cheers!

Now that sounds wonderful! My experience wasn't too far off, but the incredibly thin body was a detriment to the beer as far as me loving it. I've had a few other Flying Buffalo variants, just not the base. I have a few more from 2019/2020 courtesy of Jeff that I will be reviewing this year. Looking forward to 'em! Thanks for sharing your experience on the 2020 base and the comment, Rich!
      Cheers!

Glad it held up pretty well, I’ve always thought this one looked like cola and had a cola body. Ever since 2017 their barrel aged offerings have been thin and I don’t really understand why. I buy them every year because I still think they’re worth the $5 per can price especially for being barrel aged. Great review, Joe! Cheers 🍻

Yeah, definitely had the thin cola body, for sure. For $5/can, you can't go wrong. With prices insane in regards to everything, and especially beer, grabbing some "value" barrel-aged beer like this is always welcomed. Will be curious to see if the other two adjunct-laden Flying Buffalo variants held up or not. I guess we'll see, haha! Thanks again for the beer, brother!
      Cheers, Jeff!

That's a shame, Dan! I haven't had a Kuhnhenn beer since the mid-2010s, but absolutely loved so many of their barrel-aged beers like 4D, Barleywine and American Imperial Stout. Really enjoy their DRIPA and Imperial Creme Brulee Stout. I can't speak about the quality of their beer nowadays, but I'd love to review some at some point. I do have a few in the cellar, too.
      Cheers!

Who are you rooting for this Superbowl? Anyone but Chiefs for me, my Ravens are out.. I still think it's very fixed for the Chiefs but we'll see.. pay close attention to the refs in the Chiefs game. They seem to just happen to get crucial calls that end up giving them the points that win.

Bills ... Bills ... and Bills! The Chiefs have become like the Patriots in many respects, including some of the calls from the refs. Outside of that, though, I just don't like dynasties in any sport. I always root for the underdog or a new champion, unless it's my team. Since I'm a Seahawks fan, it's very easy to root for the Bills because the Seahawks used to be in the AFC West with the Chiefs. Also, considering I live in Buffalo, I'll always root for the Bills after the Seahawks. The Bills fans deserve a Super Bowl at some point in their life, IMO. So much pain!
      Cheers, man!
