Thanks for everyones support through my reptile keeping challenges! This wasn't an easy decision to make! I worked so hard on making those enclosures but I did it for the leaf tailed geckos to benefit from it more than anything! Since they aren't, things have to change! The next update on this topic is going to cover ALOT (Dr. Brown performing a fecal test on the geckos, treatment if results show parasites, tearing down the old planted tanks, setting them back up with paper towel, fake plants and laying bins, etc) so it'll likely take a few weeks to produce! Thank you for watching!
Very interested in the result of this experiment. No doubt you have given this a lot of thought and concluded that humidity and polution are the main factors for the ones in the naturalistic enclosures to lag behind. But might there be a other factors at play as well? I'm thinking of stress because of an abundance of insects like springtails. Might there be a bigger fluctuation in day/night temperature in the plastic bins, compared to the glass terrariums? Was there a difference between those kept in pairs and those kept single? Was there a difference in light? A difference in airflow? Maybe the ones in the plastic bins simply had it easier to find the feeding insects because they were in much smaller enclosures? Maybe they actually feel safer and less stressed in much smaller enclosures? So many questions. Please keep us up to date on your experience with this change in setup!
The number of variables in a Bioactive environment are extremely high. This is why I find the field so fascinating, as more data is gathered some answers will begin to appear. I have been looking into parasitic loads in found in isopods and springtails. There could be some gut bacteria in these animals. Currently working through a statck of papers I found on pubmed.
I bred these guys 20 years ago. Got them from someone who said they wouldn't breed for him. Cool climate, moderately wet environment, misting, and 2 months later I had perfectly round white eggs in the leaf litter. Smallest geckos I have ever hatched!! Thank you for sharing yours with us!
This is a great video and concept. Clean is super important when housing and breeding. I like that you're willing to explain this (which could be seen as a downgrade). It is of course for your animals well being. Keep it up. Your Geckos are absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing them.
Leaf TAIL geckos? More like Leaf ENTIRE BODIES geckos. It makes sense that they would prefer dry habitation. Their entire evolution, it seems, has been among dead dried out leaves. They're not camouflaged to appear like damp rotting leaves, but dead dry ones. Hot damn, are they spectacular! Dry those enclosures up. I'm sure they're not supposed to be arid as a desert but, if they're from the forests of Madagascar, as I suspect, then there is an extended dry season there.
You take such amazing care of your animals, something like this really needs a detailed and attentive eye! I truly hope you're able to find a good option for their new housing. Maybe a more arid style bioactive could possibly work for them? Best of luck, thank you for sharing with us!
Those are amazing i havent ever seen anything like them. The only one i have ever seen is on that commercial on tv .LMAO didnt even no they made ones like that. .So beautiful
Sabzi is adorable there ) he IS the best lizard ! now I want one to make a living at quarantine) plus leaf tail gecko because they are cool coolcoolcool! you are the best on youtube !
Just to shed some light on the microbiota that live within living systems; I do believe that using antibiotics to clear out any sort of 'pathogen' in the gecko's system also wipes out the good flora as well. I don't think that excessive sterility is necessarily the answer to better health. Having a diverse microbiota is important for digestion, absorption, and assimilation of nutrients in our reptiles. I'd be cautious with antibiotics especially if the animals are not showing signs that they need them. Also, why not just keep the bioactive a little dryer?
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts! I actually do have a probiotic designed for reptiles that I use after parasite treatments. For now I’d like to rule everything out so this is what I’m doing. For all I know the issue may have something to do with my choice of plants and not the humidity. It may be a process of elimination however the geckos will be kept in enclosures I know they’ll do well in. There’s no room to experiment for the sake of a beautiful enclosure if that makes sense. Thank you
This just goes to show that the care we provide for our animals is ever evolving! There is no such thing as getting an animal and never having an issue and never having to change something about their care. I admire you for being able to recognise that somethings up, and adjust their care as needed. I hope you can get to the root of the issue, and don't feel bad if you don't feel comfortable putting them in bioactive enclosures again! While bioactive is arguably the best set up in general, it just doesn't work for every person or every animal. Nothing is black and white and the same can be said for pet care. Animals are individuals, not clones (unless we are talking about mourning geckos 👀)
Beautiful collection of Phantasticus! They are all stunners. Also nice to see the care and attention these animals get from you. When you do breed the Phants will you be selling any? I’ve been looking for a reputable breeder and definitely would love to possibly purchase a hatchling. Please let me know if this is possible. Thanks....PJ
12:47 It is SUCH a hard decision. But the health of your Fants is truly more important than the aesthetic. And I’m slowly making my way to the decision for my Zali. If the plants can’t thrive, I’m certain my baby might be in danger.
Quick question that I hope you answer for me ! So you know how with crested geckos, certain morphs and colors are more expensive than others? What color and pattern is more expensive on these? They're so beautiful 😍
Hi I’m a huge fan of your channel and love watching your videos. I live in Vancouver BC and was wondering where you purchased your leaf tailed geckos? I’m having lots of trouble finding anyone who is selling them. Thanks so much. I know you live in Canada as well so you’re the perfect person to ask
I am restarting my collection and have a few geckos. Just acquired a mossy leaf tail gecko. But want to kno, if I could buy one of those off of u. Well a pair.
Oh that's a shame! I was wondering about the humidity of their setups because the scant wild footage I've seen of them was on bark in Madagascar, which I wasn't sure if would get such dense humidity considering the airflow... They are lovely animals and I hope they're ok! Maybe there are alternative bioactive setup types for them to try in the future when you have them well enough to experiment?
I made the exactly different Observation. I kept my phantasticus relativly dry Just Like my ebenaui. My ebenaui did awesome, but the are from the more dry and warm northerm climate. Just after I started keeping my phantasticus more wer, they all started laying.
Interesting! Yes I used to have a great deal of success keeping my phantasticus wetter and cooler but I have recently found a few animals where getting some sort of infection in their throats I had to treat with baytril and metacam to reduce swelling. I had one female almost die on me (I saw all the signs, colour was off, curled in tail, heavy breathing, laying on the ground). Removed her from the enclosure and placed her in one of these bins and she literally recovered fully within 2 days. She’s alive and well and just started ovulating! Well see what happens!
Late to the game but perhaps in the future, you could make another bioactive enclosure but make it a bit dryer. It doesn’t actually surprise me because much of Madagascar isn’t really rainforest. A lot of it is drier shrubland
I appreciate your comment but wait until you see these in the wild when I post an upcoming Madagascar episode! Where these are from is not dry at all! 🤠😉
I know the videos three years old but I do have a mangrove snake I bought from buying Brian bar check and I use artificial vines in some of his cages. Now when I have to change them vines, I don’t know how to clean them if you do if you could throw me a little bit of that I would appreciate it because I do try to watch every one of your videos all right thank you.
Awesome video man! I did the same in the beginning of the year with all my geckos and frogs, way easier to maintain, my animal room has less of that smell and everyone looks happier and healthier aswell! Where did you get those totes from by chance?
Interesting, I mist my bigger uroplatus around three times a week, before anyone attack me for inadequate humidity, the oldest animal has been with me for 3 years and have gone through many clutches of eggs. All mine are kept in bioactive enclosures, well, since I keep giganteus, they are in gigantic enclosures, humidity wise it's kept pretty ambient around 40-60%. So far I have no problems, maybe reduce your misting can help with your uroplatus health issue, just a suggestion. Also all mine follows strictly northern hemisphere season cycles, and every winter they just don't eat much.
I’ve actually kept/bred many members of the genus. At this time I plan to put all my attention and focus on U. phantasticus solely. Thanks for watching!
Every time you opened another cup with multiple geckos in it you picked up 1 and instantly said what gender it was and I was just wondering how you know what gender it is just by looking at it or do you only know the gender because you know each gecko individually?
