    We live in Texas. Getting our clay soil worked has been the most difficult process to grow. Then we have the heat. It has been a real learning curve. Last year was our second year. I must be doing something right. It was a beautiful garden. Yes I lost plants. Then I had others that went crazy. I’m starting all my own seeds this year. Already working my soil for next year. Our garden will be about 3000 sqft in 2024. She is right. It is good for your body, mind and soul. Twelve chickens. Next I’m already planning for rabbits. The manure from rabbits is better for your garden than the chicken manure. I grow my groceries.

      Live in the Arkansas river valley in Arkansas. How do I deal with the heat and humidity when raising rabbits. Years ago I raised rabbits and remember the stress the summer heat caused. And the ones that didn't make it through the heat. It was always worse than the cold of winter.

    I started gardening several years back with a 2'x3' bed with some tomatoes, basil, and marigolds. From there, I've increased my space nearly every year to whare now my garden is about 800 square foot, and i have a dozen chickens. But this past season life and health issues got in the way and i wasn't able to get much growing. My garden grew wild with weeds and i couldn't physically handle it. So I switched gears; I starting learning about wild edible/medicinal plants and looked among my weeds for them. So in that way, I managed to take my setbacks and use them as opportunities. Moving forward, I plan to revamp my garden, planting lower maintenance plants like perennial fruits/nuts, using the bulk of my garden for plant/forget/harvest foods like potatoes, squash, etc, and then just using a very small section, closest to the back door, for more high maintenance plants like peppers and tomatoes. I'm hopeful that this will make it more manageable for me should these health issues continue.

    • @TheProvidentPrepper
      @TheProvidentPrepper  8 місяців тому

      I hope you get better soon! I'm in total agreement about the fruit and nut trees and berry bushes. Love those perennials that grow back year after year regardless of what's happening in my world. It's the food forest approach :)

    I'm all on-board with Garden, Chickens, Bees, but I add fruit/nut trees and berries. Have 3 apartment chickens who regularly keep me company in my tiny 16'x16' garden plot and are happy with scraps from my 2 GreenStalk planters in the apartment. This year I'm changing up and putting 1or2 cattle panel green tunnels in the garden and shifting the raised beds around them. My site is too windy so these changes should help me with my watering issues. Love y'all. Prep HARD.

    Past year my family got into chickens and built 7 raised garden beds. We loved every minute of it. In addition we tried growing potatoes in grow bags and it worked perfect especially harvest time. The potatoes have been stored unwashed in our basement and we’ve been eating them for the past two months. Our goal for next year is to do our own starts early spring and transition them to the garden during planting season. It’s a lot of fun and my family enjoys it.

I did have to sacrifice and remove ornamental shrubs in order to do this since I have such a small yard. Happy trails!

    I raise rabbits and quail and have two bantam hens to hatch the quail. They do a wonderful job of raising the quail for me so I don’t need an incubator. I butcher and freeze the rabbits and quail when they are old enough. I also have a small orchard that was planted 3 years ago. I grow a garden and use the rabbit poo and have a compost pile for the quail and hen poo. I do not need to have any other supplements in addition to what I produce myself. I sprinkle on some hay and comfrey and some shavings from the hen house and it does really well for me. What I am currently working on is growing my own feed. So hopefully I’ll master that next😅

    I'm really interested in this, but I wonder how people will keep others out of their garden if they live in a city or village. If there is a famine, people will do anything to feed their children. I would imagine a fence is just not going to keep people out. I would love to hear others opinion on this. Thanks.

      I have thought about this also. I have a 3 ft picket fence around my yard and I am sure anyone could jump it if they wanted to. I live in town and have neighbors houses 15 feet from mine. So very close. One neighbor has commented many times about my garden. I have shared some extra tomatoes and peppers with them. I have often thought about what I would have to do to protect my garden if things got really bad. I would need a higher fence, maybe electric fence, maybe razor wire. But then that would be hard to do after things went bad but I sure don't want to do it now either. Just my thoughts rambling.

      I have no privacy, houses all around me, a lot of split levels, so many houses can see my yard. People will take food when it gets bad, and it won’t take long to get bad.
      We don’t have the money to move. Not everyone can just pick up and move to the country. Plus prices are so high to get some land.
      Just stating facts for many people.

    • @TheProvidentPrepper
      @TheProvidentPrepper  8 місяців тому +4

      My opinion is that we do the best that we can with what we have been blessed with. I am growing for everyday as well as tough times. I'm very willing to share starts, seeds, and knowledge with any of my neighbors. It is no secret that I have a huge garden. The more people we can get growing today the better off we will all be. Many people would walk through my garden and have no idea what is edible. They may take the strawberries but very few will know that tasty tubers are underneath those sun flowers (Jerusalem artichokes). I do the best I can to be self-reliant and then trust that God will take care of the rest.

      @@donnaemslie5729 Micro greens under a grow light indoors? High in nutrients. Rabbits, (double as pets) you can feed them the greens too. No one can complain about "livestock" . Their poo is great fertilizer, you can add it to your flower beds in your yard, around your home.You can grow veggies in containers too. I'd mix flowers with some veggies in the flower beds, look for obscure veggie seeds/plants to use like skirret. It looks weedy but the roots are delicious, its like a potato. Maybe mix forage your yard unless you use lots of chemicals. I eat my dandelions. We put up a sign that says "pardon the weeds, we're feeding the bees". Just a thought, so you don't get complaints from your neighbors. Cheers

    Got our chickens and garden started here in AZ. Boy it’s different gardening from Utah. Especially in the middle of the desert in December. Learning a lot already. We have ants and bugs that love to eat our garden. Figuring out how to overcome that.
    I would expect to get more chickens to replace any chickens that may die so your egg production is not affected.
    Starting a flowhive soon.
    Planted some citrus will be planting more.
    We have plenty of space to work with, it’s a lot of desert! Land is expensive right now though.
    Just start everyone. You will have things fail but you will become your own expert.

    Sometimes no matter how much you practice; you really can't grow anything. It is still a talent. Some people never learn to cook although might try every day. I would try sprouts and microgreens if you don't have outdoor space. Also, I would source the local organic farmers, so you are ready to approach them if the supply runs out at the stores.
    I would think a good crop to grow is potatoes. With skin on, they are full of nutrition and people grow them even in bags. Also, lettuces are supposed to be easy.

    I live in Kansas City, I have found out that we can have chickens (I am still looking into the rules and regulations), right off the bat - no roosters because of sound ordinances. I really miss my own flock of Dominiques (old breed, dual chickens, forage well, brown eggs, hens are excellent moms, even if really broody, really nice to be around.). Year before, I did try to grow tomatoes & peppers, the furry mafia got my over a bushel of tomatoes, peppers never took root to grow. The ones we got were mouth watering delish! tho! I did find good bugs in my little garden, praying mantis and lady bugs. For me to use the yard, I really need to fortify my garden space. (Found out ground hogs will climb, so does everything else that loves free food! opossums, raccoons, squirrels, deer reach over -like their image of giraffes.

    But what do you recommend if animals are not allowed or it's not realistic for whatever the situation may be, for most important veggies. I'm on a piece of land that has many trees, gets swampy in big rains, lots of moss and much more things that are negative. And our state health board just made it more difficult to have chickens especially a rooster. Rabbits are at risk by racoons, and possum, and I and a few friends personally cant physically build or afford to pay for a Carpenter to build a coop or hutch. There's a small open space that is dryer and sunny etc where I cram in as much veggies and herbs as I can. But over time I'm finding half the perennial stuff that I planted were the wrong type like the variety of kiwi. I've waited yrs for fruit to bare and now that they are finally blooming (but not bearing fruit) I found out my well established fruit aren't the kiwis you find in the grocery store, but a miniature variety that spousedly won't be tasty. I'm finding this with other established plants too. Do I need to tare out healthy plants to start all over again at nearly 67 yrs old? Also noticing my land is getting swampy fall/winter year in my dry area. Maybe I need to just move. PS... great episode! Gets the juices flowing for planning next Springs goodies. Maybe I can suck it up and get a coop built.

      You can do this! One of the sayings in permaculture is "the problem is the solution." The video you sent of your garden is amazing. You are doing a lot of really good things. The kiwi leaves make good animal/chicken food so it may actually be a blessing because they produce so much foliage. Don't tear anything out. Let's take a look at it and tweak it a bit. Maybe we should do a video on it. Email me :)

      That's rough. We just have to do the best we can in whatever situation we are in. You can usually get away with raising quail because they are quiet and no one knows they are there.
