Great video ! The auto fence closer is like the ones in nearby Colonial Williamsburg, but they use cannon ball looking weights. I started raising meat rabbits in the 80's, then took a few decades off, then started again about 10 years ago. I can relate with loosing the only buck. So I started keeping 2 bucks and 3 does. My buddy had a colony style cage. It was about 24' x 4', elevated. He had several hutches and a way to separate the long cage into smaller ones if needed. The pellets fell through so made them easier to gather. I built my cages 8' x 30" with separating panels I can install if needed. I have 2 across from each other, plus 6 other wire dog crates. I installed smaller hail wire along the bottom edges on some so the babies don't crawl through.

We never really had issues with the bucks And the babies. But we have had a couple of does They just simply were too wild, and we’re not good parents. That is the downside of the colony as you don’t immediately decipher the difference between a good and a bad mother.
I completely agree! Jonathan and I just can't butcher the rabbits. Fortunately, we know others who are willing to do it. Quite frankly, I'll set up this system mostly for the manure for the garden. Life is beautiful and I love watching the rabbits. My garden will thrive and they will have lots of fresh produce. It's a great system.
Perfect timing as this is my next project. I’ve heard recently about rabbits dying unexpectedly when kept on the ground or in a habitat. Indoor like this for ease. I know any animal can and will die. More research needed for me. I’ll probably start with rabbit hutches off the ground and work from there. Keep us posted.
I've had pet rabbits and they are so wonderful. I honestly think they're smarter than my dogs. I think in a situation though where it meant providing for my children - I could force myself to go through with the "one bad day."
Wonderful video! When I lived at the far northern part of my state I used to get rabbit meat from a local butcher who ran his shop/counter at the back of the local little market. He sort of had a rabbit meat season shortly after the 4H kids showed their rabbits at the county fair, and 6 months opposite. Then when I moved to the Bay Area I found another butcher at another little neighborhood market that also carried goats milk/ cheese as well as the regular goods. ADVISE: start small, then slowly grow the herd/ flock/ gaggle.
We have enjoyed raising our meat rabbits for over five years, and recommend them to everyone. I do like the hutches, but colonies can also spread disease and parasites, they can also fight-especially moms being protective. But everyone should find the way that works for them.
For folks with ants, 3 inch by 3-in or 5-in x 5-in trench around the outside. Rough cement your new moat. Place a cheap sump pump with filter in a 2 ft by 2 ft or 3 ft x 3 ft box hole ( also cemented walls. At a $12 swimming pool filter basket for the larger leaf debris items.. Attach extension cord or small solar panel with 12 volt battery for continuous flow in order to keep the ants out while also preventing mosquito colonization. This is a working theory that we're about to test in an environment that has a large red ant population. I'm looking for feedback, as anyone tried anything like this, any problems that I have not for seen? Other solutions?. Apologies in advance for any voice to text errors.
We just shovel it out. My pin is actually so messy right now. It looks awful! But all of that that we are walking on is about 18 inches of fantastic fertilizer. Just waiting for us to use.
Yes, we do sometimes have an overload of meat :) we have sold to the meat truck a few times. But this last little while we just really felt like we needed to keep our homegrown protein. So we harvested and actually took it straight to a freeze dryer. I did a video of that on my UA-cam channel if you’re interested.
ha, how did you know I was looking in to this??? ha 🐰 great minds think alike. You should do a vid about breeds and types of rabbits and where to get them. Nate said something about genetics, do we need to worry about inbreeding? I've seen some vids that say you should not use water bottles because the rabbits can't get enough water from them. You could talk about what to feed them and how valuable their poop is as fertilizer. You might also want to mention that rabbits are not considered livestock so you can have them in a regular neighborhood. You may want to mention some hazards like mites or diseases and how to prevent them. I know it's easier for their poop to drop through, but don't those wire cages hurt their feet? Also, rabbits can be potty trained.

Do you find the does fight or attack each other's babies? Do they get along in a colony so long as it isn't too crowded?

I want rabbits too. My dad used to raise them. But that "one bad day" is so hard to do. It's the only thing that has stopped me from raising them.

How does he handle manure? Nice thing about cages is that I get perfect piles that can be whisked away to the garden whenever I feel like.
It actually piles up in the colony quite nicely. You can tell from the video, though we were a little bit overdue to harvest some of that Manure :-)

How do you clean out the "coop" so to speak? Do all the rabbits mainly use 1 corner for waste so it can be scooped out?
