Here's something that is often overlooked, especially when using a Palomar knot (or anything other than a snell). And that's the hook gap. I've lost some giant fish because the knot completely pulled through the eye gap or snapped because of the sharp point in the hook gap. I try to ONLY use welded eye hooks. So far the best option that checks all the boxes for me has been Trokars.
I was very curious to get your take on a subject few seem to want to discuss: what hooks to use. I was a little surprised that you didn't talk about the use of tribel hooks for dough baits, salmon eggs for example. Two baits I use often. Besides that, very good information.
They are great for the reason you mentioned, but this video is designed to target new anglers that are looking to get general questions answered more than a specific style of fishing like you discussed. That could be a video all to itself......
When using circle hooks from the bank, does it matter if you use a bait clicker instead of having the spool locked? How much resistance is needed for the fish to hook itself?
I hate to ask but would you please make a video explaining the different hooks in more depth? Such as what baits are better for which hooks and the different sizes and types? Thank you so much for the videos you share. I have learned a lot from you and just want to say thanks
I watched this video before and forgot if you answered this question: If I was given a load of different sized treble hooks for free, do these give better results for catching the catfish than a single hook or about the same results? I know there is a chance of snagging more. If so, I may use those more to avoid having to go buy more single hooks.
Do you have a preference on inline circles vs offset circles? I do understand an offset circle increases the chance of gut hooking but may increase the hook up %.. Realistically have you done a comparison on the amount of bad hooksets you get with an offset vs inline or the hook up ratio comparing the two designs? Any data on utilizing barbless circle hooks? (Losing fish etc)..

Hey man, My father and I have been watching for a while. Is there anyway you could do a a quick short video for him just saying hi. Unfortunately he only has a few weeks left here I just thought it would be cool to surprise him with it.
Don't get me wrong I love circle hooks for open water fishing situations but they often are prone to be more likely to get snagged in heavy cover or rocky outcrops than a j hook. And this is simply due to the fact that the wider gap of a circle hook is more likely to hook into a rock or aquatic vegetation and get snagged than a narrower gapped j hook. And personally, I think that forcing saltwater anglers to only use circle hooks by law should be considered a violation of civilian freedom. Because at its core although it protects the fish from gut hooking it also eliminates a personal choice that would otherwise be a personal freedom of the angler. Because they are eliminating a personal choice that is usually based upon the fishing situation that they are in to begin with.
@@ricksonora6656 well i want something that can catch bluegil without having them swallow the hook and i dont know exactly what circle hook would i need for that
@@DieterMelhorn but do those work the same as circle hooks or are they different because i want a hook that will always hook to the side of the mouth to make swallowing the hook almost impossible

Wonderful wonderful channel. Keep it up love the enthusiasm, the analytics the logistics and the overall effort you put into making these videos !!!!
Thank for noticing and for taking the time from your day to comment!
Circle hooks are a complete game changer ..
Good video, simple and to the point. I've shared it in a Discord fishing community to help out some beginners.
Thank you!

Awesome !! Thanks Dieter

Never use a bait clicker with circle hooks. Defeats the purpose and design of the hook......
Thank you sir. Great introductory video

What do you mean by having tension on your line at 4:52. Is that with the drag or having the line tight lined?

I've seen people who use a circle hook and offset the point. What's the purpose of this and any pros and cons?
It will cause it to catch sooner, but it increases the chances of gut / throat hooking a fish,......

Do you know where i can get small circle hooks like size 32 i dont know i can get any of them
I think you made a typo, unless you’re fishing for tardigrades. Size 32 would be microscopic.
