BAD REVIEW OF "CARRIE THE MUSICAL" - NYC TV NEWS - RARE !

- This GEM of a show never had a chance...this is perhaps the nastiest review I have ever seen of a new musical by the NY press. Recorded in 1988 during previews of CARRIE THE MUSICAL.
She concentrated on the bad so much that her mind totally skipped the song between carrie and her mum
wow this is sooo mean. WHY IS SHE SMILING SO MUCH!
She's on the news. They always have a corny smile when they are reporting.
Yet it has a cult following... And she has nothing... Not even a job anymore.
$50 seats? That sounds nice...
Did you actually see it? I did. It was as bad as this reviewer said it was. I saw the Saturday matinee. Because, you know, only one Saturday matinee ever. Because that's how bad it was. The cast came out to sign autographs covered in fake blood. That bad.
I know there's talk of dialogue being removed that weakened the Broadway production, but I saw a sell-out Stratford performance that was very well-received by the audience. The reviewers here are nuts if they didn't even notice that at least SOME of the songs were/are very good!
Michael Thaddeus Doyle you were actually very lucky to see it.
Of course the show was not perfect, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show I can say it’s completely round and amazing, even my favorite musicals have things I’d change, but you learn to love it as it is and embrace those aspects that make a musical unique. In the 80’s version of Carrie you had a dark essence very well projected in the songs of Carrie and Margaret which made a powerful contrast with the energetic songs and choreography of the other teenagers, yeah maybe some of the choreographer was over the top and needed to be fixed, but it didn’t have to be removed, after all they are young students with free spirits and their own dreams and hopes, the revival lacks of nuances for that, as it is in the same emo vibe all the time; it had a really good essence overall.
The show could live well, they could remove things like costumes and maybe some of the songs/lyrics to make it more interesting. But audiences were ok with the musical as it was conceived. Sadly the reviews didn’t focus on the good aspects (that Carrie definitely had) and the investors pulled back, making it difficult for operation costs despite the good box office income.
BWAY FAN God knows how many musicals I’ve seen in my hometown on Broadway. This one and only this one, in my opinion, no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Just none. It looked like a two hour long episode of Fame. The only memorable song was Don’t Waste The Moon and looking at now, even that song was awful. The silver lame costumes, the mirror sets, the ridiculous lasers, the awful lyrics. And honestly, the fact that none of the cast could appear at the stage door without being covered in fake pig blood. I’ve seen so many rotten things before that should have died and refused to do so. Legs Diamond comes to mind. But this. I saw it when I was a teenager, I’m 50, and I still want those two hours of my life back.
Michael Thaddeus Doyle on the other hand I would give everything to switch places with you, since I was not lucky enough to be even born when this show opened. As they always say a man’s junk it’s another man’s treasure. Just a matter of perspectives.
As I told you, I know the show is not perfect and it’s far from being it, I skip some parts when I’m watching the Stratford bootleg, but I like it as it was put on stage. I see life for this musical with 75% of the 80’s material and 25% of the revival and very viable as a big scale production. With major changes like more realistic costumes, settings and I would like it to have important choreographic numbers and everything but taking out the excesses. Orchestrations were amazing back then 😱😱😱.
Fascinating. As the revival came out in 2012, I love the previous posts denying its existence. What is most interesting is the shift Broadway has made from "Fame-like" musicals with dance numbers for the sake of dance, as opposed to supporting the story. How far we've come.
Carrie was supposed to be so dreadful, so aweful, so horrifically bad that I'm sorry I missed it. Those who were lucky enough to see it and live to tell the tale, said that they wouldn't have missed this train-wreck for the world. I'm sorry I missed it, but then again, I was luck enough to see Dance of the Vampires years later! Sometimes the worst musical imaginable is the best ticket to see!
GOD!!! These people are So annoying!! Just because it was based on the same book as a horror film doesn't mean it has to be all about the horror it's allowed to be different as long as the basic plot is the same!
Sure it wasn't perfect but they didn't even mention how beautiful the duets between Carrie & her mother were!!
It focuses on the a withdrawn teenager who feels shunned by the world & by her beliefs and the pressure on ordinary teens to behave a certain way in school. NOT MURDER!
well shes right about it being a bad idea for a musical i think: the horror themes, the special effects and all. still i WANT to believe it could work with some serious rewriting because its two things coming together that I love. the review was right about all the high school kids´ songs but still a little unfair because it didnt loose a word on the highlights of the show, which it definately has! (im sure anyone who ever heard "and eve was weak" would agree)
@KatherineMacChesney Not so. Maybe the original version was a little OTT (or maybe a lot at times!), but it was salvageable. You should watch the new (2012) revival version (on here as well). it's more intimate/small-scale and the score's ben given major surgery (most of the original's Act 2 is changed or gone, among other things.)
@DannyHiggs
Oh the revised version is much better... And I definitely think what harmed the show was addition of Debbie Allan... Because suddenly it became all about dance... And of course the direct Terry Hands and his fucked up Greek Tragedy vision...
I just think that what the Composes and Writer had originally was promising, of course needed changed a bit, but it could've been good... Most of the bad songs were added one Debbie Allan came on board... Like Wotta Night... Uuuugh
0:12 “A harrah”
PAT COLLINS IS SO EXTRA!
My true opinion on this show is that one... yes, choreography was a bit naff. Set was naff. Costumes and special effects were horrendous. However, I have so much faith in the show, I really like the scorebecause some of the tunes are so catchy i.e "In", "Don't Waste The Moon". But then theres the songs that are a bit EURGH like "Wotta Night". I honestly think with the right creative team and a bit of tweaking in the score, the show could FABULOUS.
"The special effects here were straight from Woolworths."
The womans attacks at the show were cornier than the show itself.....
When she said the special effects were straight from Woolworths, when the other woman said "Thank you", she was like 'that wasn't even funny, you didn't have to be that mean!"
I really hate the original honestly billy and Chris make no since but the 2012 revival was amazing
Are we watching the same musical? Original Chris and Billy make sense?!
I think everyone is entitled to an opinion. However, I don't think people like Pat Collins, who held so much power over many people's opinions, should express their opinions in such a tasteless and nasty way. Cujo? Really? Not only that, but most reviewers (even the nauseating Stew Kline) could find at least one good thing about the show and the cast which was obviously putting their all into it, but this woman smiles happily while knowing damn well she's putting dozens of people out of work by absolutely demolishing the show.
Again, people are all entitled to their opinions about the show, but when you're a critic, it shouldn't just be all about every bad thing. I guarantee if she put in at least ONE good thing, she wouldn't have come off quite as bitchy.
This review may be harsh, but it seems dead on. I've read quite a bit about Carrie from both fans and haters, and it seems to me that the mixed score, which DOES feature some HORRIBLE stuff, the mistake of costuming and staging that weren't realistic, and the poor handling of the special effects are all accurate. Critics don't get paid to make directors and actors feel good, they get paid to save us money by telling us what to see and what to avoid, and this time, I think she got it right.
the score was so not dismal.... ya it was to mixed and the score repeating but if you listen to some of the lyrics their stunning.... this women was WAY to harsh
and now its on Riverdale and played all over and what is she doing now maybe death some stuff live forever and some people don't.
the one on riverdale was the new version that is totally different from the 80's one that did really suck
You should hear OPEN YOUR HEART and EVE WAS WEAK. There is some good stuff here.
Every critic seemed to hate the same two songs: "Do Me a Favor" and "Out for Blood". I think, if there ever were a revival, those two songs should be cut, or at least rewritten with better lyrics.
That's just the start of what I'd rework if I were able to.
CARRIE was doomed to fail because people already had their minds made up. Why do you think so many people are still fans? There is even an online petition to bring Carrie back to Broadway!
You were there on opening night? Did some of the blood really hit the audience during prom scene.
..... Evil Dead the Musical ....the splatter zone
"The special effects here are straight from Woolworth's"
LOL
It's pretty hard for me to imagine it being any good. There are things that just don't work: amateurs putting on "Cats" or "A Chorus Line," and now, add to the list, making a musical of a King novel.
And I remember how those boys could dance!!!!
GoshDANGIT ....all the critics smugly copied-each-other ...one big united front against creativity.
It's true. It sucked.
'Carrie' was NOT meant to be made into a musical, enough said.
Betty Buckley and Linzi did a great job with the shit material they were given... but yeah. That's about it.
That Cujo comment was unnecessary, but she did have a point about the sets, costumes and choreography, all of which can change from production to production.
I know right? Isn't that how people dresses around her everyday in 1988?
XD
Carrie was tremendously awful...EVERYTHING about it was awful, minus about 2-3 songs! Her review was dead on, except for the fact she didn't mention that it was like watching two shows. It's like the creators couldn't decide if they wanted a pop-y/80's score (Ensemble) or a more classical sounding one (Carrie + Margaret). There were too many complications with the effects & couldn't be done...it was just a mess.
Hey, no problem... I guess you'd treat it like a Boston or Philly open, but not an official West End Run. Ironically, the British leg of the show's journey to Bway included Barbara Cook who was almost decapitated during a performance, she played the rest of the run in England and bowed out of her contract. The British events should have been a warning, but to no avail...
People who saw thislive don't realise how lucky they were...
"The set is white formica and looks like a hospital kitchen." LOL
Pardon me, I was wrong about London, but the show was performed in England before it came to America.
@DannyHiggs You know saying the only reason people like Carrie is because of bad musicals making it on Broadways these days is rather presumptuous of you... Through my own admitted obsession with this show I have met many others who love it as much as I do... And they are all theatre geeks and thespians... All people who know good theatre from bad... People who love Sondheim... We know what is good, and there is plenty of Good in Carrie... It was just weighted down by the bad
Heavenly...
I would kill to see this on broadway today - if only it would have marketed as camp, it would have been a tremendous success....
We already established that, like forever ago...
it did survive the review...and carrie is still one of his most popular novels
Stay away from Joe Raposo...He just created many of the most memorable songs from Sesame Street.
Have you heard any other news about their being a revival?
What's that???
where that at? I'd sign it
Ha thats what im saying lol
Harrah! Lol.
hahaha sorry
This is SOOOO funny XD The comertian kind of creeped me out but this is SOOOO funny!!!! I see DEFINATELY why it flopped XD
The play did not open in London, it was given a workshop in London, but had no official opening, in fact many people were mad because the London workshop had some public funding and people thought it was crap that public funding should support an out of town tryout for a Broadway show.
@DannyHiggs Tell me what was crap about it, maybe i'd feel for you. Becuase to me it was perfect, except Blood in the Water, the only song i didn't really like.
"why would it be in london when ALL the writers are american"
The play opened in London, Ryan, you know this.
"A harrah", indeed. I'd say the more scary thing is that anyone thought it was a good idea. Well... most of the rhymes are at least as scary.
I was there opening night. Reviewed it for my college station. Even Pat Collins was right twice a day.
Carrie The Musical was very bad with the Broadway reviews ugh!
This is cool, where did you hear about this?
but, was it really the "werhst idear"?
@rubino83 its not an opinion i have, its fact.
@DannyHiggs dont make me play victim here.
PAT COLLINS who was on Boston TV in the 60s.
Agreed!
Seriously...how do you turn something like Carrie into a musical? Sadly, this ended up being the predecessor of every dumb broadway producer's idea of turning every movie franchise into a musical (Legally Blonde? EVIL DEAD?!).
5 star review !!!! THIS MUSICAL SHOULD NEVER EVER HAVE BEEN MADE!!!
