- I do not own Carrie the Musical (though I wish I did!) This is just my favorite musical and I want to share it with the world!

It makes complete sense to me why this was cut when the show was revived. The song has very little character development, and Carrie is a character driven show. The World According to Chris lays out both Chris and Sue as characters, and shows Tommy cares about more than just sex.
Also, the original director was trying to make Carrie a Megamusical, it was the 80s after all. This set piece is superfluous and clearly just meant to compete with the other spectacle set pieces of the time.
This is however a fantastically catchy song, I think it would’ve been neat if they’d reworked the verses, kept the chorus mostly intact, and used it as the “Prom Theme”. I could even see a cheesy prom banner that said “Don’t Waste the Moon.”
Wotta night and Heavens are already great prom themes. I don't think we need any more addition to what's already perfected. This song shows the activity that Carrie has never seen nor participate in before. It definitely tells us about everything without being so obvious.
It doesn't need to be an unmemorable dry number of The World According to Chris. It is just small part of the great characterization in Carrie 1988. There are also many songs in the superior original that already establish the characters through their arcs.
Tommy is shown as a man who doesn't understand his girlfriend in here, trying to understand her problem in Do me a favor, being concerned for his girlfriend in Dream On Reprise (which is cut before Broadway) and then finally taking Carrie to her best moment in her life in Heaven and its reprise. Sue goes from Her Mother should have told her to Heaven reprise and so does Chris. There's an obvious proper characterization in here already. TWATC is just a bad attempt to throw everything about these characters in one song.
The World According to Chris is basically a rework of this song. The more you listen to both of them the more similarities you notice. For example “Tommy won’t you take me home, I think I would rather be alone” from the original and “Tommy you don’t understand, what was just a joke got out of hand” from the revival are almost but not quite the same melody.
I feel like this version of the song is kinda perfect for the campy unintentionally comedic mess that was the original. And when I say that I mean it as a good thing.
Except this song was part of the original workshop before Terry Hands joined the creative team and tried turning the show into a megamusical.
At 4:43 they Choir up on me. They had excellent power in unison!
No disrespect to The World According To Chris, but I like this song better!!
I feel like The World According to Chris fits better for the darker theme of the revival, but I still love Don't Waste The Moon :)

Why does this remind me of Grease
It’s actually supposed to. The creators while this was being made said that there’s a scene so “think grease” and the costume designer though “Greece” instead of “grease” so that’s why all the costumes are really weird too and look like togas and stuff!
@@hunterobray3315 not this rumor again 😷😔 The director saw the material as a Greek Tragedy and he meant it. He directed it with a mid century minimalism theme. The Grease and Greece is just a rumor.
@@fatak5106 Oh the confusion absolutely happened. It was confirmed by several people who worked on the show and knew him. It's just that the confusion only gave him the initial idea and once that ball was rolling there was no stopping him.
Well the movies came out within a year of one another, and both storylines feature a promiscuous group of girls picking on a naive young female protagonist. And this scene is set at what appears to be a drive-in movie theater. And as was already mentioned, the creators of the show deliberate imitated Grease in many areas, which didn’t quite gel with the dramatic, orchestral elements involving Carrie and her mother.
