I jjust watched another video on putting vinyl on wood and it said Not to put a sealer over vinyl on wood because edges on the vinyl would start to lift. My question then, Should you, or should you not seal over the vinyl?
Thanks for this video, cause I have been putting on actual wood cut from the tree plus canvas now on the canvas my questions is I bought acrylic paint but it stated it was an acrylic matte and it still doesn't stick very well. I would like to try that clear coat cause i have been just putting on the wood and then used a polyeuthene over it and noticed that after a while it has started to peel up on a few of my projects.
Do you have to let the Clear Coat dry before adding your vinyl wording onto the wood..? Also what do you do when the vinyl lays over the indentation of the wood. Do to push it in our just leave it be? Thanks in Advance.
Hi, yes we'd recommend that you let the clear coat dry all the way prior to applying the vinyl. That way it will adhere correctly. Also, if there are cracks or gaps in your wood, you can do whatever you'd like with the vinyl. Some leave it as it is so they can still read it clearly. Others will cut it just where the crack is so the vinyl is just on the wood. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
If I want to out a vinyl over a Acrylic pour painting. Can I using liquitex high gloss varnish over the vinyl? And would it be better to out the vinyl on closer to the time I varnish the pour?
Trying to put 651 vinyl on canvas. I painted the canvas using acrylic paint (3rd coat since 2nd was enough to get it to stick). How many coats should I use? The paint is old as well so not sure that will make a difference. I have some Mod Pod that I can use as a coat. Thanks for any help.
Hi thanks for sharing. I purposely didn’t get the 651 because I was thinking it wouldn’t pull away from the wood easily as the letters stuck onto the sign. I used 631 and it stuck ok but even after spraying a glaze over the letters it seems that the letters can be easily peeled off. What do you recommend? Maybe I shouldn’t got the 631 but the 651 instead. Please advise. Thanks
I like to use the oracal 631 as a stencil since it has a removable adhesive. A lot of people do like the paint then peel method. It depends on the project I'm doing. If I want to wood to show through I use the 631 as a stencil. If I'm painting the board anyway the paint over method works good.
Great video, thank you so much. I wanted to make designs to be outside and was going to use plywood. Wanted to paint it black, what type of paint would I use? Outdoor? Then use the Oracal 651?
I normally paint my wood signs white and use oracle 651 but still seem to have a hard time getting it to stick down without wrestling with it. Do I put a clear coat over the paint before I use the vinyl? Ty
You could, however, the spray adhesive may do weird things when mixed with the adhesive in the vinyl. I haven't tried it before. I would suggest using a clear coat instead and letting that dry if your vinyl is having a hard time sticking.
Hi Mandy, wood stain works as well. You do need to be careful about varnishes, etc that you want to apply to the project after you have vinyl down. Different types of varnishes can impact the adhesive on the vinyl and cause it to not stick as well.
Silicone is a tough one. They usually have a release chemical on them that is very resistant to vinyl. You can try cleaning it with some alcohol before applying.

You would be able to use this product as a top sealant but not as a base. It looks like it has UV protection and a water resistant agent in it, these will make it hard for the vinyl to adhere to it.
@@Expressionsvinyls Oh. What other options do I have other than Krylon? That is not available where I live. I have the Plastikote one and the one available here is Rustoleum.
I do have a question. I was told using Mod Podge on canvas would help vinyl stick. Well I tried that method and it did not work. Well I have to get a completely new canvas? Or can I just use the clear coat over the Mod Podge on the canvas?
You can try a clear coat and see if that works. One thing that also impacts how well it sticks is the transfer tape that you are using. If the tape is too tacky then it will not release the vinyl to the project. People some times think it is the vinyl that doesn't work with the project when it is really the transfer tape that needs to be adjusted. So, you could try the clear coat as well as a different transfer tape. Please let us know if there is anything additional we can assist you with.
Hi! I wanted to know would you recommend using Mod Podge over the vinyl? I am making wedding signs on stained wood and looking to find a vinyl or a way to get the vinyl to stay on for a while (like months so I am not doing it weeks before my wedding) as well as withstand humidity/ heat etc... without lifting. Cassandra, I would apply the mod podge or a clear sealer over your stained wood before you apply the vinyl. Stain the wood and let it dry for a couple days then you can put on the sealer let that dry for a couple of days and then add vinyl. I would suggest a vinyl with a permanent adhesive. The permanent adhesive will hold up for years. If you put mod podge over the top of the vinyl it can seep under and mess up the adhesive on the vinyl and make it not stick at all.
Hi Danielle, Both the oracal 631 and the series 31 are removable adhesive vinyls. They both have a matte finish. They are the same type of product just different brands. The Series 31 vinyl is our brand of vinyl. :) The type of vinyl I would recommend depends on where the sign is going. If you are putting it outdoors and want it to hold up for many years I would go with a permanent adhesive vinyl such as the Oracal 651 or Series 51. If it is going indoors I would use the removable or the permanent. You could choose whether you prefer the matte or glossy finish.
I have been trying to get my vinyl to stick to wood. I simply sanded and stained the wood and I have found the vinyl isn’t sticking at all. Any suggestions on how I can keep some texture to the wood and have my vinyls stick better?

Hi, that is one option you could so. Also, you may want to try a different transfer tape. We've noticed that some are a little tackier than others and will hold to the vinyl not allowing it to release. What type of vinyl and transfer tape are you using?
I was using the Silhouette transfer tape that came with the cutter. The closer I got to the end of the roll, the less tacky it was..The vinyl (Oracle 651)I was using also came with the cutter. I pretty much had to peel it off the tape as I was pulling it off the canvas...
Hi Megan, we typically use the Paper Transfer tape. It is kind of a favorite but we carry others as well. Each one works great. Keep in mind that vinyl will react differently to different surfaces. What type of surface are you trying to place it on? expressionsvinyl.com/transfer-tape/
:) This is a tricky one that I should have explained better in this video. When you spray sealer on, it seeps under your vinyl and can mess with the adhesive that is already on the vinyl, making it not stick. If I do a sealer I do it before my vinyl goes on and make sure it is nice and dry (24-48 hours) before applying my vinyl. If you really want to do a sealer after I would put the vinyl on and let it cure to my project. So let it set for 24-48 hours and then spray on your sealer. This will let your vinyl get a good seal before introducing a new product into the mix. Hope that has helped clear up some of your confusion.
I am new to this and I can not get my Cricut Vinyl to stick at all to my canvas. I painted the canvas with my folkart acrylic paint. What's the trick I watched this video over and over and still can not get it to stick at all.

Erin, there are different products out there that can help. Unfortunately we don't sell them. Look for something with that is a heat resistant transfer tape. I am not familiar enough with them to recommend a certain brand.
We don't really recommend it because the clear coat can interfere with the adhesive in the vinyl and make it not stick. Some people have had great results. If you do want to use a clear coat just make sure your vinyl has had time for the adhesive to adhere, at least24 hours 48 is even better.
Yes it could. If you are using a sealer we recommend using it before you apply the vinyl. Let the sealer completely dry and then add the vinyl. If you a sealer over the top of the vinyl it can seep under and mess up the adhesive on the vinyl and make it not stick at all.
It can depend on the transfer tape being used and how long the paint has cured. If the transfer tape you are using is pulling up the paint after it has cured for at least 72 hours, try using a lighter tack transfer tape.
When we applied too much pressure to these canvases it caused some stretching of the canvas. Rubbing it on with fingers and carefully removing the transfer tape worked better for us on this project.
