Maui or moana
Hay hay
Grandma no question!
I think the Grandmother is my favorite.
"I'm the village crazy lady. Thats my job."
The chicken
Just to clarify- Moana doesn't have any powers over the water. She can't make it do anything. The ocean is its own character who chose her to return the heart (that's that scene when she was a baby- she proved she had a good heart by abandoning the pretty shell she wanted in order to help the baby turtle) and is then helping her throughout the movie
Thank u
If this was kingdom heart she would be more than worthy of being a princess of heart
True but the thing is I think it could detect she liked water. Also realm of monsters is in under water so wouldn’t she have to at least be a demigod?
I don’t think the movie was trying to be a direct reflection of Hawaiian or Samoan culture. I think it was kinda meant to be a mythologized version of Polynesian culture, similar to Kung Fu Panda with Chinese culture or Frozen with Norwegian culture. Also, great reaction and 🌊
And that's why in europe it is called Vaiana. In France we call vahiné (it sounds a little bit like vaiana) the tahitian women. Tahiti is part of the french polynesian islands.
I mean, obviously it's a mythological adaptation, but it's essentially the Maori culture, as far as I'm aware. Hawaiian culture essentially came from the same Pacific Islander culture as modern Polynesian culture. Like 3500 years ago, the Polynesians colonized most of the islands in Western Polynesia, and then suddenly stopped. Then, for like 2000 years there was what's called The Long Pause, where they stopped seafaring and colonization, only to pick it up again and colonize most of the islands in Central and Eastern Polynesia, including Hawaii. Moana seems to be a mythical adaptation of the end of The Long Pause.
@@peterlewis2178 It has many Māori elements for sure - some of the voice actors are Māori (Temuera Morrison/Moana's father, Rachel House/Grandmother, Jemaine Clement/Tamatoa); Taika Waititi did a pass on the script early on as well; Maui is a big part of Māori culture, and Moana means 'ocean' in te reo Māori, Heihei means chicken, and Motunui means big island. Maui also performs a very weak haka at one point in the movie. However their clothing is more Polynesian, and several of the other names and spellings (Te Fiti would be spelled Te Whiti in Māori, for example) are dissimilar. Maui's tattoos are not Māori moko, and the songs that aren't in English are sung in Samoan and Tokelauan. Also the island of Motunui is not similar to the vegetation of Aotearoa New Zealand, although the abundant vegetation that springs up on Te Fiti at the end does always bring a tear to my eye as it's much more familiar (though still different). We don't have a lot of palm tress or large tropical flowers, more dense bush and ferns. So it's definitely a blend of many cultures, which I think was a smart way to go. And Maui is a common denominator across the Pacific. Such a beautiful movie!
@@joeypotter6051 Sure, But Maori, Polynesian, etc. derive from the same culture, and that's my point. It's set hundreds of years ago at the least, so it's understandable for it to not exactly match up with modern demographics/cultures. my point is it's not a fictional culture, but a fictional/mythical adaptation of real cultures/a real historical event.
@@peterlewis2178 I think both the directors got ideas from all the islands in the South Pacific. That is why they traveled to all the different islands getting ideas. They wanted to Pay homage to all the islands of the Pacific and make sure they at least got tattoos, patterns on the tapa, dress top, lavalava true and authentic. It’s a great movie and as a South Pacific Islander I really appreciate some that Showcases it to the rest of the world.
Finally someone that understands the genius of shiny 😂 Schaffrillas is proud
It's a great song!
I really dont understand the hate
YES! It’s the best song. Long love David Bowie and all tribute
That was Jermaine clements from flight of the Concords.
Pu'a means 'pork', and it's the name of a common polynesian pork dish.
Moana basically named her pig 'Bacon'.
7:24 "She is gonna be a grandma at the end of the song." lmfao💀💀💀💀🤣🤣🤣😂😂🤣😂💀😂😂🤣🤣😂😂
I died laughing too I had to pause the video for 20 mins 🤣🤣🤣😂😂💀💀💀
*haha... 😕*
Fun fact: Moana’s dad is played by Temura Morrison. You might know him as Jango and Boba and the clones ( the ones in live action)
That is amazing, i never recognized his voice
Fun fact: If this movie was closer to the actual mythos Moana's dad would have been voiced by the Rock.
@Elias black In the actual mythology, Maui has two children, a girl named Moana and a pig.
In the Disney movie, Moana's name is Moana and she is very close to a pig.
@@kyleallen7979 Mythical Maui is also actually credited with all the things he says he did in 'You're Welcome', and according to legend sought out his mortal parents and forgave them for throwing him away, which led to him actually having a pretty nice relationship with them and his younger brothers who came after he was tossed.
Also he was, according to legend, bald and extremely ugly, which is what led to his being tossed in the first place, they thought he was deformed.
@@GuukanKitsune Wow, that's awesome. I love learning about different religions & the characters in them, thank you.
This movie had some of the best songs in it

Moana's voice actress, Auli'i Cravalho, made her acting debut as Moana when she was only 14/15 years old.
The song that moana sings when she's walking to Te Ka always makes me cry. I don't know why, it just gets me every time!
God same, and the one she sings when Maui leaves her.
My take on it is it's kinda a metaphor. Te Fiti is a woman who had her heart stolen (broken) and changed drastically because of it, but discovers thanks to help from Moana that what she became didn't define her. "They have stolen the heart from inside you, but this does not define you. This is not who you are, you know who you are"
the initial melody and song it was based on was written by te vaka (which Opetaia Foa'i is a member) to commemorate a group of young school women who were killed in an accident in NZ in the early 2000s.
Me too
Lin Manuel Miranda's work is so beautiful that soundtrack makes me tear up sometimes
Did he write the songs? Wooo
@@kamiloncha.m He also sang the song about the wayfinders.

Litle FF: In Some European Countrys they Renamed Moana into "Vaiana" or "Oceania" because Moana is an Italian Erotic Actress and Disney didn´t want Kids to Google Moana and find these Adult Videos
Oh, so that's why she's called Vojana in Czech. I thought it was just dumb translation.
Omg THAT'S why she's called Vaiana in swedish
Also because there already is a documentary about her called Moana, so they literally didn't have the rights to name it that anymore.
And there's a cosmetics brand called Moana, and there were trademark issues.
In Greek were also renamed the film into Vaiana...
I prefer Moana!
The forehead touch is a symbol of sharing the breath of life like the word Alohā
Moana means Ocean
Moana is 16
Maui is the Rocks daughter’s favorite character but she can’t put together that her father plays him no matter how much the Rock tries to get her to realize it
I remember. In som much videos, he tried.
@@brunna9018 yup
Was she 3 cause he should sing it and she might realize or show the credits to her
This movie is similar to Coco in that it's highlighting Samoan culture. They made an effort to cast Samoan actors and consulted Samoan people to get authentic details to make it as authentic as possible. Almost all of the cast were of Hawaiian or Maori descent. Add in Lin Minuel Miranda's music and it's gold
They were gonna depict the Ancestors as wearing full ritual ceremonial gear, headdresses and paint, but the experts they retained told the filmmakers that those outfits would be impractical for sailing and would not have been worn during a voyage, so they asked what they would wear and the experts broke it down for them.
It's also similar to Brave in that aspect, with Brave's cast being made up of people who were Scottish or of close Scottish heritage, whose music was done by Scottish musicians, and whose art team went to Scotland to draw the landscape and ancient structures in order to capture it as accurately as they could. It was also the first time a Disney Princess ever sung in her native language (in a flashback scene, and later it also can be hear during the second sunrise, young Merida duets with Elinor on a song called Noble Maiden Fair which was sung in Scottish Gaelic). To me, Brave paved the way for films like Moana and Coco in regards to representing cultures and the people from them who otherwise don't get that cultural recognition. And all three are amazing films for doing that and doing it so beautifully.
It’s Polynesian not just sāmoan or Hawaiian
Fun Fact: the movie Moana was renamed Oceania for Italian release because there is a well known porn star with the name Moana. To avoid confusion among parents Disney changed the name. In other European countries Disney renamed the movie Vaiana because the word Moana has a different meaning in certain languages
Lmao how did u even learn that? I mean it's interesting but where do you get that kind of info.
@@TiredHumanBeing I tend to watch a lot of behind-the-scenes documentaries. You'd be surprised how much drama & confusion occurs to make a film😬🤯 🎥
@@JMac7395 That's actually really cool and yeah I imagine there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes of making a movie you do you man.
The reason it was changed in some other European countries (mine included, which I was so confused about when looking up the english version online x'D) is because "Moana" is already a registered brand there! I usually love both my language's as well as the english dub (they're always different when it comes to line delivery, song lyrics' meaning and even puns/jokes, so it's hard to pick a favourite!), but Moana was really a movie I only liked the original version of, so I'd honestly kind of forgotten we called it "Vaiana" here xD
Te Ka and Te Fiti make perfect sense as two halves of a whole. The islands of the Pacific Rim from Hawaii to Samoa to Polynesia to everything in between were formed by volcanoes throughout the millennia. The volcanic ash makes the soil fertile and leads to tropical paradises.
Te Ka & Te Fiti, also represent a cycle of growth of the pacific island, of which many are volcanic. Lush with growth, they errupt, when the volcanoe goes dormant, the volcanoe leaves a rich soil for more growth.
I found that scene with Te Whiti (Whiti is Maori) very powerful, on how compassion and seeing a person beyond what their trauma did to them, restores the heart of who they are.
Moana is 15 years old and fun fact she was supposes to have a lot of brothers but they made her an only child.
I thought she was supposed to be 16
She’s 16
The singer/actress was 14 when she started recording.
No B
She's 16
She was supposed to have 9 brothers and her original goal was to sail across the sea to rescue them after they all failed to restore Te Fiti's heart. (I think)
The emperor's new groove is a great movie

Te Fiti created the islands, but without her heart she still has the power to create. Lava and water would, over time, be able to create new islands. However without the heart her powers are more destructive too
Fun fact: earlier in the movie the old man that suggested cooking Hey-hey. And the chicken itself are both voiced by Alan Tudyk the same guy who did the voice for king candy in Wreck-It Ralph

As a recommendation can you please watch Princes and the Frog because it is a very underrated Disney movie with amazing songs and visuals. I think you'll really enjoy it :) Wave emoji
Moana is based on all of Polynesia that includes Samoa, Hawai'i, New Zealand, Tonga, Cook Islands, Tahiti etc.
Yaaassss the songs for Moana were written by the great Lin-Manuel Miranda! He's best known for writing and staring in Hamilton so if u liked the music in this u should definitely check it out! It's my favorite musical of all time! 😁
I love Disney Animation, on par with Pixar these days imo. Hope you react to Big Hero 6 and Zootopia at some point!
"I don't know how we're going to stack something on top of that for the next chief" That's the point. Moana is someone who will never be surpassed in what she did for her people.
or maybe because there wont have a next chief since they left the island
@@douglasnunes1515 "We keep our island in our minds, and when it's time to go home, we know the way". They never abandon an island, they simply branch out when the tribe gets large
@Lady Seashell Bikini thank you lol
I sing the music to this every day and im not ashamed
Actually, it doesn't take place in Hawaii but in French Polynesia. It's " Lilo and Stitch " who takes place in Hawaii (Maui's fishook makes a little cameo in there).
Don't worry, in France too the title is " Vaïana ". It reminds me the word " vahiné " who's the name of Tahiti's women.
You asked how old is Moana : she's 16 years old.
Actually it just takes place in Polynesia the region showcasing all of our cultures
The first time I've someone other than myself who loves the song "Shiny"
What about Schaffrillas?
I remember watching the movie so many times that I literally memorized the whole script, like, everything
I'm glad you liked Tamatoa's (the giant crab) song so much. That's my favorite too. The actor who voices the character is Jemaine Clement. He has a very quirky sense of humor that I adore!
26:50 - The symbolism of that shell on the stack of rocks is to say that they are voyagers now; whoever is the next chief won’t have to stack another rock there because they may be living on a different island. It’s to show that the village has moved on and will continue to voyage like they used to.
Me watching Moana: This is nice. I like it.
Me when Tamatoa shows up: This is 10/10 I fucking love it forever
So about the shell... she put it there so the future chiefs couldn't stack anything on top of it, so they would have to voyage out and find new lands to raise up.
Probably a first time suggestion, but you should watch Ice Age. I grew up on that franchise and in my opinion, it is extremely underrated!
Oh yes please, that would be really cool and funny!!!
Accoring to the lure, Maui is actually the father of Moana (don't think about it too much; but bottom line, she is kind a godly)
In my opinion, they seem like long lost cousins perhaps or way older brother? Related somehow but not father daughter in my opinion

Oh, wait, have you been suggested to watch Spirit: stallion of the cimarron? that one was my entire childhood- amazing soundtrack, stunning animation of horses lol and the scenery too!!!, Native American characters, you definitely add it to your list!!!
Can’t believe u cut out the scene of Maui’s backstory, it’s so tragic!
You kinda missed the point with the shell on the stone pile at the end. Her ancestors traveled from island to island never having any one home base. By placing the shell on top it signifies that they’re returning to their voyaging ways
The crab is voiced by Jermaine clements, aka singer for flight of the Concords.
Lot of people assumed he wrote this song, since it's the only song with a different style to it.
But he actually didn't. He just sang it. Lin Manuel Miranda wrote a flight of the Concords style song specifically for him to perform.
moana was soo freaking good. u should react to cars and bolt
There's actually a theory where Moana actually died in the storm and throughout the whole movie it is her journey through the afterlife. Tafiti I read somewhere that it means something like heaven or something like that or heavenly. this whole movie is just a journey of the afterlife that's why she can see her ancestors and her grandmother along with the "underworld/monster" like place where the crab was. If you think about it the chicken is like her guardian animal. Quite similar to Coco whereas it was a dog or cat in that movie. So yeah, the more you know lol.
Also, there are some hilarious videos of Dwayne Johnson's daughter absolutely refusing to believe he is Maui, no matter how many times he sings "You're Welcome" to her.
"I don't think you can really chat with the water"
Well yes she can actually
Can we have a Mulan reaction tho?? 👀
This guy really analysing the quality of the boats
Great reaction! "Moana" has become one of my all time favorite Disney movies. And Moana herself one of my favorite heroines.
technically you can hear what SOUNDS like the ocean in a sea shell but it's actually the sound of your own blood moving amplified
Great reaction as always! So excited to hear you'll be doing Prince of Egypt soon. 🌊🌊
I believe the reason the film is called Vaiana in Netherlands and I think France? is because of a famous porn star called Moana.
I had no idea until I googled the name change, and I'm not gonna lie, it's kinda hilarious.
Germany too
The album of the soundtrack but in Hawaiian is also so gorgeous to listen to!! I wish there was a way to watch the movie in the native Hawaiian language on Disney+
The Polynesians really were some crazy innovators, they just went out to sea with their entire tribe of ppl and said “we’ll make it work” and just found tons of ways to navigate the ocean and the stars. They also made a lot of great technology to sail with and found hella islands along the way. They were the real OGs, that couldn’t be me cause I’m mad scared of big bodies of water.
Yes, "Shiny" is amazing. Won a lot of awards and stuff.
The music in this film was done by the incomparable Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and star of Hamilton and In The Heights on Broadway. You heard him here singing the English verse in We Know the Way (the song of the ancestors). He's doing the music for the Disney film Encanto, which comes out in November.
Its also partially based on our real life history when Polynesians used to voyage from Island to island.
9:10 when he tries to use his fish hook, you see sphen the reindeer from frozen in it
26:43 I thought it's because they're back to being nomads and therefore no one is going to put a rock on top of that specific pile
My favorite character in Moana has to be the grandma.
Gramma Tala
Because she didn't force Moana with instructions and gotten her to do this by her free will
Like the scene with the past generation of her people were sailing
Plus she flourished her idea of sailing and wanting to go beyond the reef.
“That’s a ghost baby girl don’t touch that” XD
I think the reason why its called 'Vaina' in most European countries was not to disrespect the movie in any way, but rather to prevent the movie from getting any bad reputations because of a famous Italian Adult Film Actress named Moana Pozzi who was also a big figurehead in Italy's political scene between the 80's and 90's. But mainly for her Adult Films.
Hence why they thought it was better to change the film Title so as to not bring any pre bad misinterpretations or misunderstandings for the potential European market.
Thats at least what I heard/read/thought....^^
7:56, the best freaking laugh ever!
Congratulations on the sponsee deal, hope they keep coming in
That crab(whose name I'm too lazy to look up) is Jemaine Clement, famous Kiwi actor and musician.

@Rival Reacts Fun fact: Moana literally means ocean. In many Polynesian languages I believe, I don't know which ones though I researched it ages ago xD
3:38 in europe (and maybe in other places too, i’m not sure) it’s not called moana because of copyright reasons
Have you thought about watching a Disney princess movie like Cinderella, snow white or beauty and the beast??
11:25 I immediately thought of Mulan's grandma 👀
Hi, I'm Italian and from what I understand the name Moana on Europa was changed because there was already an actress named Moana, only she was a porn actress. Apparently in the 80's if I'm not mistaken, she was quite famous. 😅 I'd say they were right to change the name to Vaiana.
I just watched this again last night. Deff a pretty movie and a chill watch. Hei Hei is my favorite 🐓😂
Moana easily has the best soundtrack out of all the Disney movies I've seen. With most Disney movies, I only like one or two songs but with this one, I don't skip any of them. I also just love the story. 🌊
26:44 Finally someone who had the same thought as I did!!😂😂😂
The reason why Moana chose a seashell to put on top of the mountain instead of a wok it's because it's showing that they moved on from staying in the island and now the voyagers
I think the name Moana was changed because of copyright. In Spain and some other coutries it's a registerd brand. I also recall reading something about an Italian p*rnstar with the same name haha.
Yay my man getting sponsors
Honestly, in a different context, "How Far I'll Go" could be an awesome villain song.
I think the shell on the rocks is a symbol of them moving on and exploring new islands, so there won’t be another chief there to place a rock. :>
There is actually a very loosely based on a true historical event that is called The Long Pause where Polynesians who were extremely skilled at sailing and navigating the seas just,,, stopped sailing for 1000 years and we don't really know why (the leading theory is that it was due to strong winds)
