  • Believe it or not, this is the first Johanna Basford coloring book that I have ever purchased! I've been so busy with Coloring Bliss that I rarely get a chance to color other artists' books, so I thought this would be a good one to start with.
    "Rooms of Wonder" is a fun new book full of Johanna's whimsical art. In this coloring book she included a secret key and door in each illustration...what a fun idea!
    Watch my Johanna Basford coloring book review to see what I think of her art, as well as the quality of the printed book.

    This was not the paper Johanna normally uses, she said it was no longer available for her US edition. She chose the one Kerby Rosanes uses in his books as the next best possible option. Also most pages she leaves a gap so it doesn’t go in the crease. You should try some of her other books.

    She's my most favourite artist. Thank you for reviewing this book. The illustrations are just wonderful! I usually avoid colouring wide open spaces, so her style's right up my alley. And MANY colourists have used tons of media in her books, so I'm not really worried about the paper. I think it mostly depends on the colouring artist, how they manage to achieve a particular look. You should check out Chris Cheng, Suzanne Wimpenny Berry, Barbara Colour, they've not only used pencils & markers in JB's books, but watercolours as well! 😊❤️

    I love Johanna’s work. Both her coloring style and yours are lovely, depending on what one prefers. When she does coloring videos, she keeps it very simple. I love you both for different reasons. She doesn’t use tri tones for example. Lately I’ve become overwhelmed by trying to use three colors and blending so much. Completely agree about using polys. They are my favorite anyway.

    I have every Johanna book and eagery await a next one. i suggest you watch some of Johanna 's utube episodes. I love her style and color choices. True fans of hers get our spinal bond or razor cut pages and copy then color. Your pictures are fun but not as challenging or detailed. If I need to relax I simply color an object or small section of picture. To each his own.

    Thank you for your review and tips for using Johanna Basford's 'Rooms of Wonder' coloring book. I have several of her books and love each of them. I have both the spiral version of some and the regular book version. I have had no problems associated with using markers in my books. I also use water soluble crayons and pencils along with a Dove Blender, fine tipped markers and gel pens. There is NO bleed through to the next page. 😀 I find these to be high quality so no need to be afraid to try! 💕

    I have one of these books that is glue bound. I colored in it for a little time here and there over many weeks and without meaning to, I was pushing the book open flat. And the pages popped out over time. I was a little annoyed when the first page fell out, but not even five minutes later, I said to myself, "Hey, that is much easier!"
    And then I deliberately squashed the book open to get more of the pages to come out, and I even bend it backwards on itself. The more it falls apart, the happier I am with it.

    I have Johanna Bashford's World of Flowers and Rooms of Wonder in spiral bound. Perfect points you made about being able to copy the pages because of the square shape and the paper texture. If she is limited to a particular paper for U.S. printing then it would be perfect if she could single side her drawings and maybe change the paper size. I do love the cute images she has in Rooms of Wonder, and her other books. I didn't know you had spiral bound coloring books. I will check it out. Thanks again for the video.

    Thanks for another great review. I have all of Johanna's books and love all the tiny details. I only have the US versions which have glued spines. Some people have had problems with the pages falling out of previous books. Probably after pressing the book open flat and as you said that is not recommended. Personally, I would be okay with the pages coming loose and I press the books open as flat as possible every time I color. It's my understanding that the UK versions have a stitched spine and different paper. They may be able to take more "spine abuse" than the US version without falling apart. I do prefer Polys in all her books, mostly because they keep a point longer and that is great for the little details. :)

    I’m a big fan of Johanna Basford, I love her coloring books. I own all of her books (multiple copies of some). I enjoy all the intricate pictures and the leaves!!! As far as the paper goes, I find that most paper is workable with a little patience. As for the question of spiral bound or not. I do like the spiral because it lays flat and it’s easier to color to the center. However, on the bound books I like to see the title of the book on the binding for ease of finding on the book shelf.
    Emily Illustrator did a weeks worth of videos in this book using different pencils each day, and they were beautiful.

    Jennifer, if you really want a better idea of what Johanna’s books have been up til now with the publisher’s u fortunate new paper choice, DO get some of her other books. I have many and I love them, super heavy paper and covers. I just got mine yesterday and wow, what a difference. I feel bad for Johanna. I will be using my Polychromos on this one. Worlds of Wonder has just as many pagers and weighs quite a bit more.

    • @ColorPlanBsB
      @ColorPlanBsB Рік тому +2

      The publisher did NOT choose the new paper. They could no longer offer what they used to, but it was Johanna herself who picked out what was the best alternative. (Read her Instagram post)

    • @sunnycharacter
      @sunnycharacter Рік тому

      @@ColorPlanBsB Maybe I didn’t state that right. The option of what they used before was not on the table. I know it was a disappointment but a choice had to be made as well as possible to keep it economical for the buyer. Either way, I’ll still enjoy the book, especially after I have it rebound.

    I love all Johanna’s books. The paper problem was disappointing to her as well as me. But, as others have pointed out, not her fault. I enjoy using gel pens on her tiny illustrations. They don’t bleed and look fantastic. I’ve even used some barely damp watercolor paints.

    Jen, I agree with your impression of the paper. Since you have never owned one of Johanna books, you would not be aware of the paper in her previous books, which was terrific. She has said that she was not able to get that paper for this book, which is disappointing. The good part is that this book is printed in the USA, which is important to me. I started on a page this morning using my Prismas, and found them less than satisfying. I, too, plan to move to my Polys for my next page!

    Seems like all of Johanna's books have the same binding problem, it doesn't lay flat which doesn't allow us to paint close to be spine. I like to color my pages 100%, that's why I love Hanna's Karlzon books. But, I read in somewhere that Johanna's books UK version are best because the spine is sewed instead glued. With my Circle of life book I went against Johanna's rules and I forced the pages to flat them, it works fine if you start doing it from the very first page to the end. ;)

    Are you aware of any coloring books for copic coloring? I have seen some on Amazon, but they are double sided and the reviews indicate that bleed through is an issue. I'd love to practice my copic coloring with a coloring book. I did buy a little book by Altenew which I like because I can turn them into cards quite easily.

    I love your channel and your coloring books but I hate to say this video, to me, sounded a little bit more like a sales pitch for your books than a review of Johanna’s. Just giving honest feedback. :)
    Also, another option for removing the binding of Johanna’s books that I’ve done before- you can use a clothes iron or heat gun to melt the glue and the pages will come out neat and clean not roughy cut edges. :)

    You probably should have ordered the UK version from Book Depository. Still free shipping, no questions of paper quality. This is yet another reason that I don't like buying books from Amazon. But with that said, this is the same paper Kerby Rosanes uses and I use colored pencils all the time in his books with no problem.

  • @margiemogle928

    I watched your video before I went to bed last night. I would have responded if I weren't so tired and already in bed. :) I'm wondering as well what her new paper will be like. Her other books were printed on ivory paper and so nice. (although I always used a combo of polychromes and prismacolor as I'm having difficulty with prismacolors exclusively on any paper except yours and mine that I ordered. I just recently (yesterday-finished except for background) a test with 4 different brands of pencil brands. I'll post later in the group. Also, her Worlds of wonder book I could pull out her pages to work on. No. I can't use the scanner but I try to get my lighting right and take a photo of her page and print it out on my paper that I purchased. There are work arounds if you don't like the paper & if you don't mind the work at doing that. But as an artist her work is so fun and satisfying. I'm feeling (sigh) apprehensive awaiting her book. It seemed you were getting a lot of slippage with your prismacolors. Prismacolor is not my favorite pencil but I truly enjoy mixing the Prisma with Polys.
    I am so glad you did this video. Thank you Jennifer!

    I wanted to buy this book so bad but the paper is awful. My local bookstore has almost all of her books so I was able to compare page quality. Ugh. I really wanted to experiment with rooms, as I did one in another book I have and I really enjoyed it so I was happy to know she had an entire book of rooms. For the price and her reputation for beautiful illustrations I expected higher quality paper. Hopefully I can find a book of rooms that is on quality paper. Life is too short to color on cheap paper 😊

    It sounds stingy, but definitely prefer coloring books with standard sizes (for me it's A4 but think I can also do letter? It may be autoscaled for letter) cause I can photocopy them, as someone whos struggles with perfection I feel more relaxed in starting an illustration knowing I can reprint it if I mess it up, or want to try a wetter media like markers or watercolors. For JBs books I have to scan in 2 parts and do my best to stitch it together, it takes so long I usually opt for a different book to color in, or a printable.

    Just an FYI, Jennifer, if this is your first book of hers, you don't know that up till NOW, both the UK and US versions had very good papers at their respective publishers. However, this US version had to have a new paper, something happened at Penguin publishing. Johanna fussed and fussed and finally picked this paper out. First time as bright white, not an issue. But some find it too smooth. I find it a bit too smooth, yes. I used to use many different pencils in her books with no issues. Now I need a blender tool. And not likely able to get more than a couple layers down with wax pencils. It has been suggested that harder pencils and oil pencils might work better in this book. I am also going to buy a UK edition from Book Depository. That paper did NOT change. (As for other complaints in comments, there was some printing errors and I wish instead of complaining, they contact the vendor to replace their book.)

    • @MyVideosNow
