I made this quick video while visiting friends on the Island of Gozo (Malta) recently.
I am prone to taking too much gear on trips, but this time, seeing as this was supposed to be time to relax, I thought I would just take my Canon 5DmkII and a Sigma 50mm prime.
Taking one focal length forces you to think more, and move more, in order to get the shots you want... and of course means a lighter bag, and grateful back muscles. Limiting yourself with one focal length for a trip forces you to think more creatively to compensate (zooms can make us lazy). Your legs have to become your zoom with a prime lens. If you want to exercise your photographic eye, this is often a good challenge to give yourself.
I also offer some thoughts on not needing the very latest gear in order to get good shots, and reasons why the Canon 5DmkII is still good enough for me.
I've included some of the shots I got, including some of the Good Friday procession in Rabat.
Video was shot on a Canon 80D with a 24mm f2.8 pancake lens. I used the Zhiyun Crane for the stabilized shots, and a GoPro Hero 5 for the shots mounted on the camera.

Mate! I've seen others say it before on here; your style of content is so refreshing to see on UA-cam in the field of photography videos that give advice. So many popular photography channels are extremely fast paced and absolutely bombard me with words, which is often great, but your relaxed and informative style is what I much prefer. Thanks for the great content you put out - it helps me out a lot and always gets me thinking!

Lots of people 'take' photos. A few photographers have learned the value of giving them away again and have grown positive communities and spaces around them as a result. I have just found one of them. Hope you are getting something back from your generosity, Sean.

I once told a friend who was about to go to our local camera store to get the Leica Q: "instead of spending 4800€, just get a decent used camera for 800€, another great lens for 1000€ and travel for 3000€. That's how he got a good job as a photojournalist, cause he was finally able to create an international portfolio in Africa and Southeast Asia. Otherwise he would end up having a Leica Q but not even enough money for a short bus trip to the city and back

Really great and I can only agree on the 5Dm2 - I went to the US for 40 days with a 5Dm2 after my 5Dm3 got stolen and I honestly can't see any difference in my pictures. Those old FF bodys work like a charm and produce crisp pictures if you use good glass :)

I own a Sony A7II, and a Zeiss 35mm 2.8. Just sold my 28-70 kit lens. I'm telling you, that small body, with the insanely small 35mm lens, i can go anywhere. The lens and body weighs less than 700 grams, and produces sharp, good images. It's honestly all I need at this point. If you like that combination, and can afford it, I would say that's the way to go, especially for travelling.

I live in Gozo and sometimes I forget about its beauty...I know Malta as a location is fairly limited compared to other countries but I need to get out more with my camera and stop complaining that we don't have nothing to shoot in this small island...I do agree with you about using one single focal length and focus more about making the picture!

Completely true about the gears! I am still shooting on Nikon D700, still excellent for portraits, still good for sports and I am using it for landscape as well, thanks to the Ptgui, I am able to produce >50mpx landscape pictures. And - it's built like a tank.

Lukáš Kryške I have a D700 too, bought one last year and I am absolutely in love with it, it is so reliable and well built. Feels great in the hands. I was thinking about getting a d750 for an upcoming trip later this year but your point about stitching is great, that way we can get any MP count we want with our 12MP lady.

    Hi Shaun,
I settled on a 5D Mark2 instead of a 6D. I felt that it gave me what I want as a Photographer and was affordable. I am also shooting now with two EOS 3 Film Cameras - to remind myself what shooting various film stocks look like. Because that look is what I want to incorporate into my digital work. For a $600 investment I have two cameras that are compatable with all of my lenses and I think they meter and phocus better than my Digital SLR's. So much fun to shoot with.

Totally agree. Last year I went through the same experience. I went out with one camera (fujifilm XT10) and one lens (14mm) during a trip to Northern Pakistan. I regretted initially but started improvising as I had no other option. My favorite image from the trip came as a result of that endeavor.

After using a 70D for a couple of years I had the opportunity to buy a 5D Mark II for dirt cheap. The only problem I had after is I didn't own any full frame lenses other than the fantastic plastic 50mm 1.8. For the past couple of months that has been the only lens I've used paired with my Mark II. Being limited has forced me to be more creative and find new solutions. I'll rent if I have to but so far no need. I've done photo sessions to TV commercials just using that setup.

I usually shot landscapes and animals, or people if I get the chance. And after two years carrying three prime lenses with me, I decided to buy a 16-70mm lens. I prefer prime lenses because you can't be lazy and just zoom in, but after years of shooting I only use 16,24,35 and the 50mm range automatically.
I rarely use other lenses anymore...Beautiful video btw. This whole discussion about gear and shooting with the basics always deserves a video !

I always wanted to visit Malta and Gozo, but with the Azure Window gone, I'm not sure now. I'm using 35mm now on my travel to take in more scenery. Again, great video, and photoes.

    • @seantuck
      @seantuck  7 років тому

Definitely visit. It's a beautiful place. Photos taken at the window tended to look like each other anyway, and ended up being very repetitive. Challenge yourself to go and shoot the things which people don't usually focus on. It helped that I was staying with locals who could take me to spots where there are less tourists as well.

I have a 50mm 1.8D and a Nikon D7100. I have used that lens since 2013 and almost never take it off my camera. Even though I have some other lenses this is the one I feel the most comfortable with. About three weeks ago my uncle lent me his 14mm. I have tried to use it but I've only got two images that I like taken with that lens.
As you mentioned it in the video, 50mm has its limitations but once you get used to it, it's hard to put it down.

While I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of limiting oneself and not needing to buy a new camera (because image quality has been ridiculously good for 10+ years now), I find loads of reasons to splurge...
    1) I shoot weddings -> Want the best autofocus available
    2) I like shooting in low light -> Want full frame
    3) I love small cameras -> bought an A7C
    4) Find myself a bit frustrated with the EVF -> Want to upgrade to a newer model
    5) Like the flexibility of using crop mode (since I don’t even own a zoom lens) -> Want the A7CR
...but that’s just far beyond what I can justify spending. And the other day, I looked at my old a6300, thinking that it too is an incredible camera. Not perfect, and sadly a bit lacking for some of the things I do, but oh so close to everything I could ever want in a camera.

Great video like all you made. I believe that we can take nice shots even with an old camera. I have a Mark II and almost after 7 years I bought the new Mark IV, I believe you have tried it as well, I find a huge upgrade on the new camera compared with my old Mark II (which I still have and don't sell), but agree that in some cases it makes almost no diference. Keep giving us simple and good videos but never do it as an obligation because that's what makes people genuine.

Looking for some advice, if anyone would be so kind?
I currently use the Canon 70D which uses a cropped sensor and I've been thinking for a while now about upgrading to a full frame Canon, but I'm on a tight budget. However, the 5d MkII mentioned in this video is more obtainable to me at the moment at around £500 second hand.
My question is, would it be worth changing my 70D for the 5d MkII to make the jump from a cropped sensor to a full frame or would I see less quality, detail etc.
I understand this may be a silly question, but I'm learning. Thanks in advance.

Sean your comment about being unable to work out whether a photo was captured with a 5dmk2 vs 5dmk4 is totally acceptable. I have actually tested people with 5 photos I claimed were all shot with different cameras. So many guesses and at the end of the day they were all shot with my 5dmk2. LOL, how many claimed they were shot using a sony a7iii. I am a 1dx and 5dmk2 user, I wont replace either of these cameras as they both serve me well in my commercial work. I think far too many users get stuck in the upgrade circle due to manufacturers luring them with their new cameras. Too many people dont learn to master what they have to begin with. Great video, subbed.

Simple kit, stunning images. And you are right, if you hadn't mentioned it, i wouldn't know what you had taken them on. I use a few simple film cameras and a 50mm prime (35mm if i use my Nikon). If i need to zoom in or out, i use my feet :)
    Another great video, Sean.

Totally agree, Sean. The first lens I ever bought was a 50mm/1.4. It taught me the rules of composition like no one other lens could have. It’s my favourite focal length too.

Great tips, I photographed Gozo 30 years ago with a 50mm lens, it was the only lens I had. lolThanks for sharing your thoughts.

I was forced years ago because of a neck.arm problem to "gear down"and this video really hits home as I use a Canon 6D and a 50 1.4 and move my feet. You will not believe how you can work doing this...Just go shoot and deal with what's in front of you. This was a good video.Take it to heart.

Hey Sean, another wonderful video and stunning photographs.
And to back up what you were saying, which I'm sure you'll agree,
It isn't the camera which takes photographs, it's the photographer.
Thank you again for sharing your work, words and wisdom with us all.
    Bless you.
    Tony

2 years ago I went to Azores with 2 cameras. A Sony a6000 with a zoom lens and a Fujifilm X100s. I took 3x more photos with the x100s. The x100s has a fixed 23mm 2.0 lens, and the camera is a joy to use. It looks vintage so it does attract attention but not in a bad way. Sometimes having a fixed focal lens makes you free of having to decide witch lens to use or witch focal length. You have one. And you have to zoom with your legs. I learned to appreciate that being limited is sometimes not a prison but a way to free your creativity. Great video. Cheers

Sean and everyone who wants to answer to this question: have you ever been "afraid" of using a single lens during a trip? I'm in your same position: big and heavy backpack that I don't want to take with me any more. But the idea of a single lens, during a trip, is make me crazy!

Really well said. I have the 5Dm2 and committed myself to only shooting on a 35mm lens for the next year, and resist upgrading the camera body for as long as possible. It's shifted my focus from gear concerns to composition and creativity. Thanks, Sean.

Thanks for this. I'm just starting to get back in to photography & planned a trip to Egypt in about a month-I only have the 50mm prime lens because that's all I could afford, and I've felt heartsick at the thought that I might be taking the wrong lens for travelling, but I just can't afford it. Your advice made me feel much more at ease, so thank you!

Hey Sean! I am a beginning photographer and I am struggling to get a shot like in 5:19... How do you get the sky so blue but still have those sunbursts?... And almost no lensflares? Is it bracketing or something in the settings? Also shooting with the sigma 50mm art lens with a nikon d500

I'm watching your UA-cam videos to improve my photography skills, but if I'm being completely honest, your videos are also some sort of meditation for me :) your videos are so calm, I'd have to watch them even if I weren't interested in photography.

Best advise in terms of camera gear compared to the other photography channels I'm following. I agree, it's not always about the latest and most expensive gear. It's more about the art and capturing the perfect shot!!!... #inspired #insightful #motivating #determined #to #improve

well, look at Daido Moriyama--he uses nothing but point and shoots--I think he has used a Ricoh GR2 among other cameras of that ilk.

I'm still using my Canon 500d, the only dslr I have that I started with 5yrs ago and that I bought second hand at that. No money for an upgrade so that's how it will stay for the foreseeable.
