I recently took a few days off and travelled down to Lynmouth on the Devon Coast. Lately I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be authentically yourself in your photography, or filmmaking, or whatever your creative pursuits, so on top of taking photographs I decided to make a film with some of these thoughts.
I hope it challenges you to be brave enough to be yourself in your own work.

These videos are absolutely precious! In a very saturated market with reviews, unboxing, tutorials etc I LOVE to see something deeper and you achieved that here Sean. I'm actually playing around with an idea to a series going this "philosophical" road too, so it's very nice to see someone else also trying out this format :)
Mads.. I would love to see this kind of content from you.. I follow you continually as well as sean. I get some like the How too stuff. but it's these types of vids, that really resonate with people.
Mads' are actually pretty good, but at times, you talked too fast and too much. I think you need to write first what you want to say so you will not talk unnecessary thing. It is very annoying to watch substanceless videos. But, again, Mads does have the ability.
Mads Peter Iversen I actually enjoy these better than his tutorial videos.
I agree with you 600%!!! This is two years old and only now I’m finding out about Sean. This is very inspirational for all of us who are in this creative journey. This is truly dope
@@kennymccannYT both mate!!
Ah, another great video.
As a musician, all my biggest influences all seem to have a thread running through their thought processes: they create because they have to, in the sense of it being an innate need; they would create even if few or no people heard their work; they didn't get into creating to "make it"; they refuse to compromise this integrity for popularity. It's these principles that I keep coming back to and re-questioning -- would I still do this even if I wasn't going to "make" anything of it? Sharing with an audience absolutely completes the "feedback" loop, and I think creating without this can feel somewhat empty. But in the end, I want to be the one primarily happy with what I do, and if other people like it, it's simply a huge bonus for me. Being hired obviously requires negotiation and compromise, but these core principles are what set apart many of the greats throughout history.
I've watched more than 40 videos about photography today and yours is the one that helped me the most - or at least made me feel the best.
Thank you for what you do, Sean
Stay authentic, keep going.
Me too.
"All art completes its cycle when it is appreciated by someone else"....wow. If I have a mantra going forward from today for my photography this is it.
Sean, these more philosophical/spiritual posts are the ones I DO come looking for, as opposed to the tutorials. Frankly, it's partly due to the musical underscores you use, but I think that's because the music seems to fit your way of being and maybe the tonality of your voice, too... or maybe it's because the totality of these posts simply resonate with my own way of being in this world. Whatever the reason, I appreciate the inspiration I get from your presence and offerings, here. What I also get from your work is an impulse to put into the space what you find most valuable when it seems to be missing; that's what often motivates me to post anything at all. I'm not so much trying to correct others, as to add to the deeper conversation. This is Definitely not something to try to control, but is also profoundly valuable to do anyway. MY request: keep 'em coming, as long as it's right for you. Ripples WILL have their legacies.
Sean, you're the first youtuber I turned on notifications for. And it's for this exact type of content :)
wow, this is such a great comment to read
2 years after you made this video; I am so happy you didn’t lost your way. I love your approach about talking about photography. After all, we all have different cameras, different styles and different things we want to photograph. Many of us watching are between beginners and professional photographers. We are using our camera to express not only creativity but also our feelings too.
Sean, you are wise beyond your years and pack powerful content into each video. Thanks for being you!
Sean I dunno if you are reading this but you have helped me more than you can imagine.
I am a writer and data scientist by profession and musician and photographer by vocation.
I have been applying the prognosis and logic and philosophies explained in your videos in all fields and I have become significantly more unique and produce unique results as well.
please keep doing what you are doing. You inspire us all
Your genuineness and willingness to open up your inner soul for all to view is what has drawn me to your channel. Keep doing what you do. In today’s world where everyone feels compelled to continually market themselves, your approach is refreshing.
You’re in the right path...👍🏽
Hallelujah! Finally someone who takes it to the core in photography. It resonates with me totaly. Thank you, thank you!!
It is so good to hear intelligent and honest opinions about photography. I find value in every video that I have watched.
Thanks for sharing your views. Of all the youtubers who are photographers / videographers, you're the most special and truly inspiring for me.
Needed to hear that this morning....thank you
i felt exactly the same
Absolutely brilliant. If I ever want to relax I just watch your videos. Nothing better than enjoying the truth.
The best thing about landscape photography is that it's also a great exercise for your mind and relaxing to your mind.
I'm not big on commenting but this is a strong video! Inspirational and pleasing to watch, love it!!!
I follow and support you because you don't come across as a sell out. I feel you genuinely care about your viewers and want to help. Granted I know you people need to make a living so I do understand to a certain extent when people use affiliate links, review gear and/or sell workshops or tutorial books. With that said I think you are one of the few people on YT that remain true to themselves and stay grounded. Thank you for all you do. You have no idea how much help you are.....specially in those dark times people go through. Again thank you.
Thanks mate.
I LOVE these kind of videos, and I´m glad I found you here on youtube. These videos help me more than any about technical things. Greetings from Germany!
I'm an introvert as well and I also think these types of video you make are my favorite as well. I always go back to these types of videos you make. They are so peaceful and enjoyable. They really speak to me and encourage me. Keep up the good work bro!
This means so much to me! I started photography and videography about a year ago and ever since I've struggled so much. Torn between myself and the people with an audience. I want a community of like-minded people to go to with my work and get feed back and critiques but I've been so scared that in order to build that community I'd have to present myself in an inauthentic way.
Thank you Sean!
You're welcome. Good luck.
These kinds of videos are the reason I'm subscribed to your channel. Please keep being your authentic self!
Thank you so much for the inspiring words. I got started in photography later than most and I feel like I've become stagnate. Lost some where between my passion and where I want to take it professionally. This definitely helps.
Andy Overcash
Good luck and many success to you! And to us late bloomers, lol, in photography and cinematography!
Sean, your authenticity is really what captured my attention to your channel in the first place. I'm not sure how I found it originally, but I am really glad I have. I think I am going to go back in time and watch them in order - I feel like I have missed things. Thank you again!
Keep doing videos like this ! Very inspiring. I'm glad I found your channel
So grateful for your sensitive insights and your ability to share yourself. *Thank you.*
I love the silence between your discourse. It enriches your message and makes it memorable.
Just like a great image, the recognition of your work will be recognised by those who appreciate what we are looking at. Great images aren't engineered and I have to believe my work should flow from my creative side and never to be scripted, or worse, copied from another. I have to believe that if my work is seen and liked then it's for the the reasons I make this content and not because it sells well or because it's commercially viable. I have only just discovered your channel and I think your videos are brilliant.
+Gadget John thanks mate:) welcome.
This is your very best presentation. It drills deep into what is really important about why we do what we do.
Thank you for sharing more of yourself and being genuine! It just reminded me why I love certain youtubers and photographers/vloggers. It's the genuiness and the giving of themselves. It also reminded me of why I dislike alot on youtube and everything else. I feel that as a world, we are missing that authenticity in a lot of aspects and it's our jobs as artists to bring people back to knowing who they are and why they're doing what they do. Thank you!
Great! I really like authenticity. I wish more people realize how important it is. Thank you.
Sean, I'm from Brazil and discover your work recently. It is really good to see your work and it is is amazing, I mean everything. The photography, the message that you give to us. Thank you !
You are awesome. Thank you for being here with me at this moment of my life. 🙏
Sean, thank you for your thoughts on the philosophical side of photography. I'm an introvert too, and I struggle with the search for authenticity in my work. I really appreciate your ideas and these videos.
In my opinion the best channel on UA-cam. It's more than a video.
Really great content Sean. I like that you are talking not only about the technical stuff, you are talking about passion with passion.
Precious and authentic and wondrerfully real. I keep coming back to this video every time I need to re-focus on the important things in my photogaraphy and what message I want to give. Well done!
Thank you for making videos like this. Thank you for choosing to create what you love more than what can sell better. These videos give me the motivation to be myself , and to stay authentic in my work.
So simple, but just wonderful.
Thank You Sean! It is SO refreshing to hear your honest and authentic thoughts on photography.❤
Sean, I don't know how I stumbled on your video because I was watching a series of videos on quantum theory but man am I glad this game up in my suggested list. These kinds of videos are so rare, talking about photography from a philosophical perspective is so refreshing because everyone I follow on this platform are afraid of revealing themselves in this way, it's all mostly technical. Please do more videos like these, Ive already shared these with some friends. Absolutely love this kind of content!! Thanks for investing your time!
you're welcome mate:)
Super like Sean. I am a constant visitor and a subscriber of your channel and I must say I love these videos. Every one is talking about cameras and gears. But it’s you who’s is talking about philosophy, the creative process, the mental abilities. I firmly believe people out there need more of this than the tutorials. Keep doing great work mate.. keep inspiring.
Thanks buddy.
These are actually my favorite videos. So inspiring, thank you.
Maslow called it "self actualisation" and suggests it is the highest and hardest of human needs to attain, even above the need for recognition from, and the esteem of others. I think your point about innovating , not imitating is a key one in reaching that pinnacle.
Lynmouth, Valley of the Rocks and Exmoor. Been living in North Devon for over 8 years and only just got my camera and with all this on my doorstep. Looking forward to autumn with all those colours and shadows down here. Nice video
I really enjoy your "real" videos more than anything, you are authentic and so talented!
Just stumbled upon your channel... Love your vulnerability and being true to yourself. Thanks for sharing. You are an inspiration! Respect!
Hello Sean,
I follow a lot of UA-cam channels about photography, editing and so on... In French (my mother tongue and in English as well, even if it's not always easy all to understand) but your videos are among the best I've ever seen. Thank you.
Thanks Sean. Please, please keep doing these videos.
I sure hope that you will keep making these videos Sean, but if it helps, these are the ones that really make a difference to people if I may it to people like myself in the long term. They inspire and provoke the thoughts needed to improve or keep on creating work regardless of the reception from others etc. I appreciate the words and thoughts you provide in this passionate video, I think it covers a lot of what I think myself regarding photography. And yes I know that this what you might call a rehash of a comment by Andy M but it just so feels that it express my thoughts too.
Thanks Tony:)
sir, your understanding towards art is absolutely deep and concrete...... and that mimicry of sir,Peter Mckinnon :-) :-0
Love this video. The internal creative struggle is very real and it never ends. I have internal conflicts about my photography and poetry all the time. In the beginning of my photography career I was always looking for creative recognition by trying to outdo everyone around me, but in the process of trying to beat others, I lost myself. Keeping true to yourself without compromise, may not be the most lucrative way, but self fulfillment can’t be measured by your worth in money.
I love this video!
It was nice to find a photographer who is not into too much technical stuff of photography.
The best you is the real you, the authentic space that is in each one of us is where good art comes from"
Your realization and reflection on what you do are so inspiring, thank you!
This is one of your best videos. The way you talked about being genuine and authentic I could tell from your voice that you are passionate about this stuff. It gave me such inspiration. Thank you.
Interesting to see this old video again. I guess you get most hits from these philosophical/coaching videos now, rather than the few instructional videos of yours.. It is a pleasure to see you being yourself!
Thank my friend, but no:) The tutorials will always get the most views.
@@seantuck Oh, that suprises me! Maybe your are a victim for YT logarithm? Those videos should be the most viewed. There's plenty "seven way" videos of every technical and estethical issue around photography, but almost no channels grasping the aspect about how to produce and make a living from a artistic drive. Your totally honesty approach about the long winding road of struggle and doubts, makes your channel gold for every person with a drive and a dream, not only for photography, but in many aspects of life! Keep them coming! They are good quality stuff, and helpful for many people in doubt.
Thank you Sean! I love following your philosophical videos! They really resonate with me and I'm so glad I found you on UA-cam!
Thank you Sean. I needed this. Much appreciation to you and your work.
I am here to be inspired, I know the techniques. Its the storytelling that worry I lack, I wanna tap into myself and been greatly moved to see another who had similar struggles. Keep up the great videos such as these and Thanks!
Wooow. Your channel and your art, is absolutely stunning. I just explored your channel few hours ago, and iv got really amazed. I am also an introverted person, and sometimes I’ve got find really hard to be my self as a photographer on this market. Usually on this society what it looks like more opportunities for extroverted persons. You really inspire peoples like me. Keep up the good work! And of course being yourself ;)
Thank you! Your authentic self is just what I needed. Please keep doing these thoughtful videos.
Videos like these are a true breath of fresh air. Being an introvert myself I always feel the need to formulate my life and thoughts in a way I find logical. Hearing someone else with the same experience is really helpful and reassuring. Thank you!
Mate, nothing but respect for this! ❤
Exactly what I (& others) really needed to hear, appreciate it :)
Thank you Sean for this wonderful video and message.
Thank you for your inspirational story. Nice landscapes!
I Hope you will keep up with these kind of work, with philosopical view
Yes.. Tutorials are helpful to begin with. But your videos take us to another level . To better undestand ourselves and what we are looking for in our photography, Thank you again for your videos!
Amazing!!!! I'll watch this over and over
Thank you for your videos. Not tutorials but these ones. Love it. And your photos are so beautiful. Thank you.
Wow, very honest words. It‘s something I struggle with too. But I told myself to not pay attention to money or fame in the first place. But to love what you‘re doing, even if others don‘t like it.
Thank you very much, your videos are very usefull and authentic!
I like what you say you should truly be who you are. If you want to do tutorials great people can learn if you want to continue doing videos like this one where you speak openly about yourself then these are the videos that I would love to watch more. keep up the great work I've been been watching all your videos since the first one that you posted over 2 years ago.
Hello Sean. I just want do say, videos like this are for me te best ones from you. I found these really inspiral for me. Thanks for makeing videos like this! All the best.
Stay authentic. I ❤️ how you are thinking here. And your story telling is great. Thanks for sharing.
so thankful you made this....
Pretty sure this is at least the THIRD TIME I've watched this. What a great video and shot of encouragement for us creatives. Thanks for that Sean :)
Thanks Michael:)
Sean, I truly love these videos you put out man. Just recently discovered your channel and I think I'm about halfway through everything you've put out. Congrats on what you've achieved and all the best for the future. Looking forward to more of your unique videos. Not a bad impersonation of Pete. LoL.
Love the mood of these videos. Thanks for being yourself :)
So true words. And as always, very nice, and deep video. Thank you
Funny... this type of video is what made me want to subscribe to your channel. Maybe they don't get the most views but they are thoughtful, honest and a pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing yourself. I appreciate it very much.
Really like your view at life and drive. The images, scenery in this video really help build your message. Real inspirational, been following you for a while now and still liking and learning watching your video's.Keep it up!
Great stuff. Exactly the kinds of things I need to hear. For me photography is not a business and, throughout my working years, I never saw myself as having any artistic leaning, so after retirement when I started photography I copied the style of others. This video has been great.
You're right. If I watch your video, the videos of MacKinnon, Matty or others, is because you guys have your own style, your own personality. And that is a good balance. How boring would it be otherwise.
Another great video Sean. Your appriach is very refreshing and inspiring. Keep making these type of videos. Thank you
Damn, its 2am in the morning, and by God did i need to hear this! Thank you so much,
just do what pleases you, you know it makes sence.
Thanks for the encouragement. Loved the video awesome.
Love your videos they are full of authenticity and give me something to contemplate long after watching, Also the quotes at the start are beautifully done.
thank you for your inspiration, really means to me.
Thank you. I just discovered your UA-cam channel and this was just what I needed to hear :)
Just love your content and work, i have learned a lot with you. Thank you 😀👊👍
You're a "one off " mate. Keep up the great work. Thanks for this, and all your videos.
Love this video, I come back to it whenever I feel like a poser as an artist. It grounds me and reminds me, I make art because I love it, It makes me happy. Thank you.
Such a great content, you inspire me to find my own way in photography!
I think you might like Martin Verfeld's books.
I appreciate the life lessons you present in your videos. That in itself is a gift and an art .
One of the most inspirational and authentic videos I have seen on you tube, I have been thinking about this and wanted to start creating content without losing my way thanks a lot.
authenticity is everything, it speaks volumes
Love your stuff, Sean...I will be following you...tchau.
Sean my friend you are the most inspirational person on UA-cam to date!
Keep up the good work
I found this at the right time.
I really enjoyed the content and message! I have a deep love if photography, have always just taken photos for myself but have recently decided to share my photos, it's a frightening first step.
Another great video man! Honest and real.
Beautiful message man!!
