Started playing at my church for free and overtime they started to pay me. Id say to just check your individual walk with god and your motives while playing.

I started playing at my church when I was 14 by the time I was 18 the church had grown from 100 to 800 people a service, by that point many musicians were hired and everyone was paid a minimum of union scale. But I never asked for payment but rather was Blessed by God to receive it. I now am 55 and play for free or gift back to the church what I'm given.
If your motive is pure God will supply all your needs.

I’ve been paid as a hired gun before at a different church but having played drums at my home church for 13 years I haven’t been paid one red cent and I prefer to keep it that way. Only the musicians on staff get paid and the volunteers are volunteers. My wife who is a professional photographer will offer her services for baptisms, etc. and doesn’t charge and I take no issue with that either. Whatever our service is to the Lord will be rewarded 100 fold. I get that it is different for people who are musicians full time and that is how they earn their living.

I can see how playing for other churches is equivalent to playing gigs. You are providing a service and you should expect something after giving out the service, but at the same time, I feel like you shouldn’t always expect that. I say leave it up to them. If they feel led to bless you with a little something after you played, then great. If not then it is what it is. Just playing for money to cover your responsibilities isn’t going to be enough, which is why you gotta have a main job with benefits to cover your expenses. Isn’t the Church’s business to know what you have going on, but if playing gigs is your only source of income, that’s only going to get you so far. At least what I think. Also, I think it comes down to your walk with God as well, as another person commented. Are you doing it for him or just for the paycheck? It’s hard for churches nowadays to find and keep musicians due to some always wanting to get paid for their services. I get it but that’s what a job is for not the church. Pastoring is the same way as well. Church has just become more of a business than glorifying God now. That’s just my two cents on the matter.

Why are you playing music for the church ? Is it for the Lord ? Is it for the money ? What is the purpose for church ? Did Christ get paid for teaching the gospel ? It’s sad that most musicians don’t really know the scriptures … u can tell by their speech … Lord have mercy on us

So no one else should get paid honestly… The Logic of not paying a musician should apply to everyone in the church. And if you actually knew the scriptures you would no it’s robbery to not pay a man for his services. That’s not good business nor is it fair in any manor and no scripture in the Bible justifies that logic

For any service provided to a church you can narrow it down to a value, that does not mean it is wrong or right just because of that value.
If the roof of a church is leaking some repair work can be dune by volunteers and some parts you need a proffesional for fixing the roof. That same principle can be applied to musicians inside a church, some parts can be due by volunteers but other parts you need a proffesional to step in.
I have been a proffesional musician for a long time and have been doing a lot a unpaid work for churches, sometimes they offered me some money for my time and effort and i refused and other times i accepted because i needed the money. Because people knew i didnt ask money or just a small fee for my services i got asked to do more and more and more, it is my own responsibility to say no. People became mad with me just because i said no or in very busy times i asked a reasonable fee for it, got the same response.
I always respond to those people if you want your roof fixed by someone with small experience and training for that task then go ahead, if you ask me to repair it and it is my job then you can expect me asking a reasonable fee for that because that is how i pay for my house and my food etc etc. I had no one ever doubting the logic i described, i also told them if i have the time and my bills are all paid for then i might do it for free but please let me be the person to decide when i do it for free......
For some non musicians that is completly new information, after some time when they had some time thinking about it they all understand and respect my decision.

In my experience, there are two types of getting paid.
Scenario 1 - The praise and worship team receives a routine financial blessing for their time spent preparing and performing. The scale varies, but no one really cares about the amount because they are all part of the Church anyway and typically this is their way of fulfilling their own individual calling. I fully agree with this arrangement.
Scenario 2 - Musicians are hired to be the praise and worship band, they are not members of the church and may or may not even be saved. They demand a "real" wage and are there to do a job. This is where I call foul. In my opinion, you cannot have people on stage, behind the pulpit of God representing the Church who are not saved or not members of the Church. Similar to the Pastor, anyone on that stage is held to higher standards.

I think there are two sides to this conversation. I'm all for musicians to be paid their dues especially if a certain level of commitment that would require them to put in more hours into it is required (extra services, rehearsals, music programming etc). I think also that there is a place of serving the Lord with your giftings but this, however, should be voluntary and not mandated by the church. After all, we're first of all Christians before musicians but like I said, this should be totally voluntary. I would serve in my local church for free as much as I can, but anything that would take me away from my local assembly or put extra demands on my time would have to be considered as a job (hence, a check). My two cents.

I've been a Minister of Music since I was 19 years old(now 37). The Lord has blessed me to play as a full-time musician till this day. I grew and sowed into the Kingdom from 10-19 before I could say that the Lord opened the door for a compensated promotion. The question will always be: Is this of the Lord? You can be payed, and it be right as well as not be compensated and it be unjust. There are so many factors. With that being said I do hold to the point that your life should be pure before the Lord and not an open contradiction of the faith before you MINITSTER to God's people. It's not a gig. It's spiritual warfare. I know that's not always what Pastor's demand these days, but I know for sure it's what the Lord requires.

As paid church musicians, is that your full time job ? Or do you work a 9-5 job from Monday-Friday and get paid for playing at church on Sunday ?
I’m from Australia and have played in churches for over 25 years but have never been paid. I don’t know any church musicians that do get paid tbh. It’s always been a voluntary role for us.
I guess if they did pay me at a full time rate, I’d be able to spend all week perfecting my craft, which sounds amazing actually.
    Very curious.

Like I mentioned above. If I got paid at a full time rate to where this would be my primary source of income, I’d be ecstatic. I would have way more time to prepare for Sunday Ministry…Organising songs, practising my craft full time every day, instead of a couple times a week (if that), because as it stands now. .. I leave for work before the sun rises. I get home late at night and I’m exhausted. I still have to spend the last bit of my energy helping out around the house, playing with my kids etc.
By the time it’s their bedtime. I’m knackered and have little to no energy left to get in practise time.
So I’m just saying. If church offered to pay me a full weeks worth of wages where I wouldn’t need an additional Monday to Friday job. I’d be a better musician today.
      But hey, that’s just me.

Should the music ministers (church musicians) get paid for playing in church? They should be paid, and paid good, same or better than a paid gig playing on a stage for a famous secular artist.
How much time the pastor have invested in learning how to preach, VS how much time a musician invest in improving his and her artistic professional skills to elevate it to a level that can be profitable? Do that effort and time have any price tag?
Been a musician is a completely legal profession. God knows it very well. Musicians have wife, husband, gas expenses, food expenses, utilities expenses, medical expenses. How you resolve that praying for them? On the otehr hand, many church leaders don’t allow their musicians to play gigs outside their churches, mundane music as they say, or commercial music. Can't play clubs because "those places aren't holly" apparently.
So how a damn church musician, is supposed to make his living with probably the only expertise in which he have been trained and dedicated his/her entire life? Do they have to get enslaved into a job that doesn’t relate to what they are by nature? How the freedom that Jesus gave us works then? It doesn’t sound like true freedom to me. That lack of respect actually sounds more like slavery, egoism, and religious hypocrisy from behalf of the church leaders, than anything else!
God knows that money is crucial. Actually money is so important that it disappears and God also disappears from the scene completely. Prove me I am wrong! Why we collect offerings and tithes in the services? Why churches don’t pay taxes? God knows money is extremely important. God knows he needs to pay rent, pay the electric power for the building, the equipment, the water bills, maintenance, landscaping, etc . . . a good salary to the pastor, minister, father, and leaders (co owners of the business). Add the lease of his/her pastor's white or black super decent Mercedes Benz that needs to be replaced every 2-3 years with a new one, in some cases a top level BMW, or even a Bentley, like in those nonsensical mega churches . . ., the pastor's airplane, the pastoral mansion, the pastoral cocaine, crack or whatever God tells them he/she must snort before the Dominical services starts. In some cases the pastor's concubine. or the pastor's mistress, and probably but not impossible a couple of frequent prostitutes ministers on Friday nights in the church's office too, and even the couple of sacred abortions that one of the church ladies got done thanks to a couple of the minister sperm drops that only God knows, how it landed inside her a few years ago during a pastor counseling session. All of that and a lot more, cost good money to God! God even pays the money used to keep he mouths closed of few church brothers and sisters that knows very well how the pastor "mixes the cooper" backstage. God have to cover all those expenses with money! God knows it very well since everything started. I mean humans honesty, moral values, and integrity SUCKS BIG TIME ALL THE TIME! Especially when there is free money included.
You are a church musician. You know that you aren’t just a church musician. The best musicians in music history have come out from a church; you know that’s a fact! So you probably are a world class musician working for "God" and God knows you love to do it. And it also knows that you need food, need to pay a rent, etc . . . In exactly the same way the pastor needs it. Are you going to praise the lord and pray to resolve it? In this case, neither God nor Jesus is the way, much less the answer. God Jesus and all the rest of the crew knows this since the beginning of times. Actually since the beginning of creation! And I am not joking at all, God knows absolutely everything very well so do not underrate him please. Respect the boss!
Now we must ask God: Dear Lord, show me the way I must follow and the answer? And God immediately will respond in an audible form with a voice of a thousand huricanes: “My beloved kid the path is through your bank account and money is the only functional answer”. CAN WE SAY ALLELUHIA!!!! And everybody also says Amen to that.
I mean ..., the pastor might work for free for a couple of months but he will get tired of it. The church must cover absolutely all of your expenses as a minister, like in the old days. Pay a good salary to the ministers, they are serving God. But God owns all the money and he also know very well he must pay. He paid our freedom basically with the life of Jesus. And even Jesus knows money was needed to put him in the cross. Jesus was a carpenter and he made money by doing what he knew how to do it very well. I mean crosses aren’t free, Jesus was a carpenter. Even the event of the crucifixion cost money! So that wasn’t for free at all.
So I am proposing three options:
    1) Write a weekly check that honors the professional talent and expertise of God’s music ministers.
    2) Keep going to church, when you have a break, as every other church member do and get a job as a professional musician playing for money and make your living.
If you are a church leader or a pastor ask to yourself: What Jesus would do in this case?
Thanks for taking your precious time to read this. And may the force be with all you.

I believe that MUSICIANS and SINGERS should be paid for their investment of time and talent. That’s why I’m selling real estate for my church so we can pay our musicians, singers and PASTOR! Cause the reality is our PASTOR don’t even get paid because people don’t give, so I make sure he’s taken care of but the CHURCH needs to come up in their understanding of MONEY! “Tithes and Offerings” ain’t getting it. The church has to build economic engines to fund excellence in ministry! You can’t get quality for FREE. FACTS! Folk will walk away anytime they feel like it.

Any type of obligations that you have to meet isn't anyone's concern ..whether it be the church or any other organizations...Your services shouldn't be for free and do not get into a dialog about your rate per hour or whatever.. if they don't want to meet it fine.. but tell them No also if they don't want to pay your rate also...IMO THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NO SIDE OR LEVERAGE TO THIS CONVERSATION.. Once u start playing u realize being a musician is all about politics and money. No way around it. God is rarely in this music thing. I believe, from an adventist perspective, when u play for a church u shouldnt be playing for money. U should be playing to serve God and invoke a spirit on the church. When i started playing i didnt even know drummers got paid. I was suprised when i got my first check. Im not complaining on getting paid. No sir lol. But especially if ur a christian u have to look at urself and see if ur doing it for the money or for God. Because if its for the money then thats work and ur only as faithful as the bread u get. Also God literally said not to work on the sabbath. I think its not a clear cut answer because there are some ppl who play fir churches that arent christian, but AS Christians we shouldnt do good for the church and expect something in return.

So let’s be clear about this. No musician should ever play if their expectation is to get paid to make a living. You can do that in the world. And no you can’t get meat from listening to the Bible app. As a minister, the meat comes from revelation by the Holy Spirit. You should never ever compare a musician to a pastor. Most musicians in the church go off of straight talent where pastors must have an intimate relationship with God in order to do their service. I know plenty of churches that operate with plenty of members without music. God is bigger than music and being a musician myself I allow God to dictate what He will bless me with not man. That’s the correct and only answer to this question. And yes I have 3 kids and have been married for 19 years now and have never needed to get paid by the church to minister for my God. What’s your answer now? Do you play for God or mammon (the world)?

    • @edennard1

Where is it stated in the Bible if a person is getting paid for his time and skill then automatically is relationship with God is questionable..? I mean some people may question the Pastor’s relationship with God the way he may Pastor but in his or her mind they’re Pastoring in a biblical way and expect compensation for doing so. Does that not mean their relationship with God isn’t valid ?..
