Why are Australian Shepherds Tails cut off?

- Did you know that most Australian Shepherds, Miniature Australian Shepherds, Toy Australian shepherds and Miniature American Shepherds are born with tails but get them cut off when they are puppies? This practice is also common in other breeds such as most terriers, Doberman Pincers, Min Pins, Poodles, etc, etc! It is so common that most people don't realize the dog is actually mutilated, having a very important and useful body part removed just for the sake of fashion. Here we do not dock (cut off) tails. Our pups keep the tails they are born with. In this modern age it seems barbaric to chop up an animal purely for the sake of fashion. Other countries have outlawed tail docking and ear cropping and in my opinion it is time to do that in the U.S. as well. What is your opinion?

Found this channel while doing research when we were looking to get a mini Aussie, a while back. We actually went with a different breeder that didn’t cut tails (which is not as easy as you might think in Canada). Our baby girl has a long full tail and it’s fabulous. Thanks!

Ears and tails help dogs communicate with each other-why would we want to deprive them of that? I agree that it’s cruel to perform non-medically necessary cropping, docking, i.e. mutilation. I too have done vet tech work and did not at all enjoy this procedure, which most veterinarians feel compelled to do to remain competitive. If only the AVMA would come out with a strongly worded policy against it. I have done a lot of research to try to find breeders who don’t do it in the dog breeds I’m interested in-including German pinschers, rat terriers, toy fox terriers and the Australian shepherd. I’d hesitate to adopt a cropped or docked dog for fear of being perceived as someone who values fashion over an animal’s best interests. The only solution seems to be importation, but that’s a lot of unnecessary expense and energy expenditure for something that should be self-evident. Thanks for giving a voice to this perspective.
Thank you for answering this. I have an Australian Shepard, A. Cattle Dog, and Border Collie mix. Her tail is simply beautiful. Her tail has a bridle, white long streaks, with a black spot.

I kept the tails of my first standard Aussie litter. They’re two weeks old now and I have 5 of 6 reserved and no one turned a puppy down cause it has its tail. I had several thank me for keeping the tails. All mine have white tips. Both my females have their tails too. We love them!
Hi Nikki, Thanks for the comment! I don't want anyone getting one of my puppies that prefers they get chopped off. If they turn one down for that, then they are not someone you want as a new family for your puppy anyway!

i just got my toy aussie this last wednesday. she also has her tail with a cute little white wisp at the end, so cute!
We just adopted a 15 week old Border Collie - Aussie mix. We are so happy that she has a full, beautiful tail tipped with a wisp of white.
Did you know that white tip has a purpose? It is known as the "shepherds lantern" and is there to guide the shepherd in the dark. Why anyone would cut it off is beyond me. Thanks for your comment Robert.

My wife and I just got a miniature Aussie with the tail and she is a sweetie. The tails can be so beautiful it is criminal to chop them off. We knew we wanted one fully intact and didn't even consider any without their tail!

I'm so glad I found your video! I got a mini toy mix and they were going to get their tails docked at 8 weeks old! I immediately told them I'd like her to keep her tail. And It seemed crazy to me that they were going to do it at 8 weeks old right before they sent them to their new homes
That is cruel and horrific! No reputable breeder would do that. I would be looking for a better breeder to support. They are usually docked at three days. Thanks for your comment.

I am glad you brought up the dominant bob tail , my dog came from a rescue with a natural bob. I still had to listen to scolding until I made it clear it was born that way.
You don't have to listen to or respond to idiots. People have their nerve saying anything to anyone about their animal. Even if your dog was docked it is nobody's business. It is almost impossible to find an aussie that is not docked, so people who want an Aussie have to purchase one that is docked in order to get one. Hopefully the natural tail will someday be the norm. Next time someone tries to shame you give them my number and I will handle it for you. Good on your for adopting your rescue dog.
When I was a trainer, I was taught that the original reason Aussies had their tails docked was when they are working herding dogs, their tails almost always got cancer as they don't tuck their tails the way Border Collies do. That being said, my mini has his tail as he is not a working dog. He's my buddy. I enjoy seeing more and more non-working dogs keeping all their body parts.

In NH it is impossible to find a breeder who doesn’t dock their aussies. The closest I’ve heard of is one breeder that will not do it if picked within 3 days. Like you said, it’s impossible to know personality or whether you will want that pick later when you can interact with the pup to know you fit. The thing that bothers me most is when I ask a breeder if they dock or leave tails and I get a long speech about how I don’t really want a miniature Aussie because I don’t appreciate the breed. Grrr! Thank you for keeping your puppies tails beautiful tails and not causing them pain unnecessarily.
Hi Denise, I am sorry you have had negative interaction with narrow minded (probably show) breeders. It sounds like you need to go into breeding Aussies in NH and leaving the tails. JK At any rate. Any advice on finding a MAS with a natural bobtail? I think the docking is really unethical and wouldn't support it anymore, but I do like the look of the bobtail.
Hard to find because the bobtail gene is a lethal gene. Two copies are a problem. It is a dominant gene so one copy produces a bob tail, but breeders don't like the natural bob tail.
It should really be left up to the decision of the buyer/adopter of the dog. I was upset when I went to pick mine and the breeder already cropped the tails before they were a month old. I still adopted one anyway but I wish he could have kept his tail
The tails are chopped off at around three days old. Vote with your dollars. If you don't support the mutilation of dogs for fashion don't get a dog from someone who does it. If you are cool with it then that is a different story.
My mini Aussie has a docked tail which I didn't like to begin with. Now I think it's so cute.
The natural bob tail is a thing and I do like the look. But I don't like to mutilate animals for a certain look.

Hi Michelle, what do you want to know about pointed ears? Aussie ears do all kinds of things. Some are rose, some are prick (ear pointed, erect) etc. The dogs you see in the show, they had their ears glued down from about 2 months of age until they were done teething. But hey, that is a subject for another video!
@@dreamgaits mine has his right ear sticking straight up because before mom adopted him I heard his last owners tried to rip his ear off so the vet was able to repair and fix his ear now it looks like a normal ear

We got our beautiful Australian Shepherd "Bear" from Animal Control 2 years ago. When we got him outside we saw his tail had been docked. We were stunned; we still feel outrage this was done to us.

Aussies are work dogs. They were bred in the Pacific Northwest to tend and protect sheep. Very important. They were bred to fight wolves and coyotes. The tails were bred out of them because one wolf or coyote could take hold of the tail and put the Aussie at a disadvantage against the rest of the pack. I have watched my Aussie fight a pack of coyotes, biting and spinning and biting again. They scatter and run. Because tails are so easily docked after birth, the breeders didn't finish breeding the tails out of the Aussies and more than half now are born with tails. A rubber band is placed tight around the tail right after birth and it safely, painlessly falls off.
Horrible. Most aussies are born with tails because the natural bob gene is a lethal gene. You cannot breed a bob tail to a bob tail. The number one herding dog in the world is the border collie and it keeps its tail. Why is that??? Also, even if this BS was true, almost nobody is using mini and toy aussies to "fight coyotes"' they are pets, agility dogs, flyball dogs, obedience dogs, therapy dogs. etc and there is no reason to chop off or worse, band their tails. @@dreamgaits Why is that. Border Collie was named for the border region between England and Scotland, where most sheep were raised in the early 1800's. Wolves had been long since eradicated from the island. Border Collies were brought west on wagon trains, while sheep were brought up from Australia to the west coast. The border collies were not good at combating wolves and coyotes, so they were bred with other dogs to make the shepherd for Australian sheep. The tail was a disadvantage so it was bred out and they were bred colorful so they wouldn't get shot by mistake.
@@stevekeller7696 You certainly do know your dog history! Again, mini aussies are not going to fight coyotes and most aussies of any size or simply pets or sport dogs. Even if someone thought chopping off the tail would give them an advantage in a fight, most will never ever need to fight anything. There is no excuse for mutilation for any supposed reason real or conjured up.
Thank you. The Aussie breed was developed out of necessity and with haste and from a small population. There are genetic problems associated with inbreeding, which can be bred out. Blue merles shouldn't be bred together, for instance. The problems of naturally bobbed tails and double merles can and should be corrected. Aussies are still used for herding and they engage predators first and think later. I don't like the idea of modifying dogs for show, but maybe we should complete the breeding process for naturally bobbed tails.
I really hate the idea of cutting an animal's body part with no medical reason behind it. If you wouldn't do it to a person then don't do it to an animal for Christ sake. Also thanks for the informative video I was wondering for so long why Australian shepherds had no tails

The market will decide. If you don't buy from breeders who dock and make your reasons clear the tide will turn.

I’m so happy I live in Sweden where it’s illegal to dock tails or cut ears. (If it’s not medically necessary.)
We have strong laws against this. It’s straight up abuse. I’m baffled how people think it’s ok to do that to a defenseless puppy. I think a pincher with tails and ears are adorable!
There are other stuff that are common (and normal) in North America (and in a lot of other places) that are so foreign to us and that is illegal here. Like crates… it’s illegal to crate your dogs in Sweden unless it’s medical or if you are at a dog show or competition, or in the car. You actually have to either have a crate or use a safety belt when your dog is traveling in the car. It’s illegal to transport a dog in a car whit out it being secured. I’m horrified to see clips with dogs in cars that are not secured, or even worse, loaded up in the bed of a truck.
Also things like prong collars and chock collars are illegal here. If you breed right, train right and put som effort in you don’t need that. And if you can’t do that, then that is not a dog for you.

I only use mine in the car, and train all of my dogs to accept them for when they go to the groomer or vet the vet and groomer crates them, so they need to be introduced to the concept. I think it is so cruel to get a puppy take it away from siblings and mother and then stick it in a crate (cage) alone. Emotional abuse as far as I am concerned.
I agree. My aussie had her tail cut off when I got her .We drove 275 miles round trip to get her so I went ahead and took her but I was disappointed that they did it. Stop mutilating them.
Yes, it's awful. But as long as there are people who will support them by buying a docked puppy they will do it.

I have been researching to get an aussie in a couple years. The breeder im going with does dock tails, but she will keep the tail on if i buy the puppy before 3 days old. I think the wiggly butt is cute, but i also dont want to alter my dog. So i dunno

If you don't want to support someone who chops off tails for fashion, then having them leave a tail on for you still means the litter mates will be mutilated. Also, anyone who wants you to pay full price by three days is not looking out for your best interest. You will know nothing about that dog! I never cut tails. I'm from Europe and I am really happy it's not alowed here! So great you made this video. Spread the word :) Buy the way.. the only good reason to take off the tail is that (primarily hunting dogs) their tails can tear off during the hunt. That can cause enormous problems and there is also a risk of infection, etc. So as a precaution, the tail of hunting dogs is (or was) removed. Because it could be extremely dangerous for the dog to have such an accident. Aussies don't hunt, so ridiculous indeed. I didn't know that breeders cut off the tails themselves WITHOUT anesthesia... That's terrible! I think you are very respectful in this video. I have no respect whatsoever for breeders who do this. It is animal abuse and is not acceptable under any circumstances.
Thanks for your comment. We had hunting dogs growing up. Beagles. They don't chop off the tails of beagles. I wonder why some hunting dogs get chopped up and some don't. Personally I don't agree with chopping off body parts just because there might be an accident with that body part. Makes no sense to me.

Hi, just a quick question. I know you said you breed mini american shepards, but I've read from multiple sources that reg aussie (not the minis) tails are incredibly fragile and that is part of the reason they are docked, is there any truth to that?
Just genuinely curious, my own aussie was born with a naturally bobbed tail, but my friend has an aussie whose full length tail was constantly putting her dog in pain. So I don't know if that is typically of the reg. Aussie or if maybe it was just a genetic defect and I don't see many people make mention of this. (Loved the informative video btw)

I just got my first aussie (standard) a couple days ago. I've always had malamutes and I love them to death but I decided for my current dog I wanted similar drive but more biddable, so aussie it was. The one thing I was adamant on was that I wanted my puppy to have a tail, I passed up many puppies due to them being docked. I finally found my perfect pup, tail and all! Thank you for advocating for them!
And actually I had heard some horror stories that I believe are true that after docking some tails they really cannot poop The tail actually helps a dog poop
That is correct. If they cut it too short they cut the nerves that help to control that, so they can have trouble eliminating.

I have a Border-Aussie that was born without a tail. My wife and i would rather a dog like this have a tail but this girl was so adorable we had to bring her home. I, too, hope breeders stop bobbing tails.
Born without a tail is fine, chopping them off not fine. Natural bob is a dominant trait, so you can get natural bobs in mixed breed dogs. Thanks for your comment.

I'm not really a dog person although I've owned about a half a dozen dogs in my lifetime. And the first time I heard of cutting the tail off it already fired off a question in my mind. Why do they cut the tail? Is there any real good practical reason for doing this? And thank you for answering that question for me.

Oh,the wiggles that use the whole lower body- still happen with a tail. Mine kinda makes his body a U shaped and wiggles to greet me- also he has a big ol booty still. Lol

@@brittanym2725 They do but they have bred it mostly out because if you breed a natural bob to a natural bob you get birth defects or pups that die in the mother. If you breed a natural bob to a natural long tail you get 50/50 bob or long tails.

I truly don't understand bc there's dogs that aren't the kind of breed that would get their tail cut of and they can use the bathroom and like sheep dogs there tails aren't cut of and there around live stock and their tails don't get stepped on

Yes, the US is way behind on animal mutilation for fashion. The good thing is taking an aussie with the tail in the conformation ring is getting more acceptable since European dogs end up over here at the shows sometimes.

No they don’t remove the tails for Just fashion, it’s for herding, goats and sheep will bite the tails. That being said none of my 5 American Miniature Shepherds have their tails cut.
Sheep and goats can't bite the tails. It is just for fashion. Even if sheep and goats could bite their tails almost none are herding anymore anyway. It is for fashion period. Glad yours escaped the madness.
Glad in UK it is illegal to dock tails on dogs... it's a body part and an important means of communication. Cutting ears is an other barbaric practice. Dogs look so much better with their tails and ears intact. It must be an awful experience for the puppies. Fashion is a despicable reason for these practices.
I can't believe in this day and age that people think it is right to chop off body parts for "breed recognition". The ear cropping of dobermans and danes is so cruel.They do it at four months and then take those sore cut up ears and put them in a brace until they calcify. So cruel and that is the VETS doing it. Owners often dock tails but VETS mutilate the ears and don't get me started on cat declawing.

I have no problem chiding breeders that mutilate dogs for vanity. I have however great contempt for noted kennel clubs that continue unhealthy specifications for certain breeds. I suggest people look at those UA-cam videos showing how dogs changed over the last 100 years.

Now yes they do cut off the tails of Australian Shepards for fashion (mostly) but when Australian Shepards first came to Europe from Australia they docked their tails to prevent injuries because Australian Shepards where almost always working on farms
That's Bogus because first of all, They are not from Australia, they are from California, and second, lots of stock dogs including border collies, collies, shelties, kelpies, etc etc work fine with tails.
@@dreamgaits I know they didn’t come from Australia, they first originated from some of the indigenous Basque people, then those people took their dogs to Australia. The Basque herding dogs then were crossed with border collies and other dogs in Australia. And eventually they made their way to California. I’m not saying docking/bobbing their tails is good, I don’t think it is but that’s just back ground info

I don't like neutering dogs either unless absolutely necessary and the minute a breeder tried to force it in they contract I immediately go to a new breeder same with tails I like the lil tails on rottweilers but if it has a tail leave it alone
Thank you for your comment. Most reputable breeders have a neuter and spay clause in their contract to keep their puppies out of back yard breeding and puppy mill situations. It is to protect the dog. It is a personal choice so you do need to work with a breeder that fits your criteria.
I like your thinking.. Chopping tails must take a cold hearted person. If they can do that, I have to wonder what other things can they do to animals that is cruel.
I think it has been done for so long for fashion breeders just think it is the way it is and don't think about the fact that they are mutilating the dog and taking away a very useful appendage. It causes great pain and a lifetime of issues from inability to communicate to balance and hip issues. Thanks for your comment.
I read online that it was so when they would herd the cattle or whatever wouldn't step on it. I have a mini (which we think he's actually a toy) aussie and they cut his tail to a Bob. We are so against that, we stand with you an animal should keep all their body parts lol

I want an Aussie with a wagging tail not a wiggle butt. SO hard to find. The AKC will prob never change their mind. One lady told me by email that she does dock and any breeder who doesn't is not reputable. Wow. Quite snobby. I had an Aussie w/a tail and it was so beautiful! He was the best dog I've ever had.
Hi Buckeyelady65, Whoever said that needs to read the AKC breed standard. You CAN show an aussie with a tail and I have done it in AKC breed ring!! In other more progressive countries docking is not allowed, so AKC allows tails in the ring because dogs come here from all over the country. Professional Handlers were very nice to me when I was showing with a tail in breed. They asked me if my dog was from Europe and I would say "no, I left the tail on". Nobody had anything negative to say. Nicky did not enjoy showing so we only did it a few times. Chopping off body parts does not make a breed!!!!
@@dreamgaits Yes, the place was called Paramount Aussies. My question was do you ever keep the tail upon request? and that was her answer. I hadn't asked others because I figured it'd be the same response. The more I've looked around since, the more I see that some breeders are keeping the tail and that is so good to hear. What's HTF for me is the coloring. Because my boy was a mix his coat color is so HTF in the purebred Aussie. I cannot describe the coloring. It's not a black Tri, but more like the coloration one would see on a German Shepherd. His legs were all tannish/red, white vertical stripe on chest w/slight horizontal white stripe, then his body was basically black overcoat with reddish, maybe more copperish under tones throughout. No hint of Merle on him at all.
Merle and Tri seem to be the majority of what I see, but I have seen a very few w/the color I'm talking about. All no tail or far away w/o shipping. I so love the Aussie w/their tails, and I do wish more breeders kept them. I see no sense in cutting it off. Rarely they are real working dogs today.
@@buckeyelady65 The color you are describing is sable and it is a no no in our breed. Even working dogs should get to keep their tails, just as border collies do.
@@dreamgaits Well, as I look up Sable, I see that color name calls out the tan and white, just as you see on a Lassie colored Collie. But that is not the color I'm talking about. I really can't describe it! "Mutt" color? LOL. And you are so right, working dogs should keep their tail too! I find no reason that beautiful tail should come off.

Hi Jade, Thank you for your comment. Maybe someday the breed standards will change and this barbaric practice will stop. We need to prove that we have evolved out of the dark ages when they chopped off dogs tails thinking it prevented rabies.

How do they look better? Their tails are vitally important for balance, communication, etc. I think it is awful to mutilate an animal because you think it "looks better".
So you've interviewed pups who were "banded" and found out there's little pain involved in the "procedure" and they are thrilled to have a body part vital to communication removed against their will? Oh.... Ok

This is so not true I’m so sorry. And you would not get a puppy just because they have no tail. I feel that is more wrong than taking their tail off! My dog was going to die with illness without getting his tail docked because he was born with it defected! Not all are for cruelty some need to and it’s not just for fashion!
Yes, it is for fashion and to meet a breed standard. If it was born with a problem that required surgery (doubtful but I will go with your story) than that is a completely different story. Most are born with normal tails and should keep them. Glad your pup is ok.
There is no way that their tails should be cut off. That's one of their main ways to communicate with you!
And with each other and they use them for balance and for rudders when swimming and on and on!

As someone who has Dobermans and also used to be a vet tech I have never had an issue with puppies and tail docked they fight more because you're holding them than the actual procedure I have never had a puppy scream and scream like you are describing even when I worked in the vet's office. And if you've ever been around a Doberman with a tail they are an accident waiting to happen I had a lady in one of my letters who wanted to leave the tail intact I told her that was fine she had already put down a deposit on the puppy by the time the puppy was 6 months old vet had to amputate part of the tale because they get wagging their tail so fast that they break them and end up with open wounds are vets call it happy tail most readers would prefer a couple seconds of discomfort at 3 days old then a major surgery when they are older. A lot of breeds are done just for looks but some of them to have medical reasons

Breaking their own tail from wagging too hard🤣 how horrible👀I just got a pit with a mile long tail and she is WHIPPING the shiz out of our legs, my other dogs face, the cabinet corners.... It's like a huge whip. I think she will be ok tho. We make her be calm when it gets like that.

Australian shepherds and other working breeds generally get them docked for their safety. If a cow or horse steps on that tail it will damage it, could cause paralysis, etc. If you intend on working your dog the responsible thing to do for the safety and wellbeing of your dog is to dock it. They also DO NOT need their due claws as working dogs. They rip off and rip the leg wide open if they get caught on something while the dog is running/ climbing something. It is irresponsible to tell people they shouldn't be docking tails and removing due claws for no reason.
The number one herding dog in the world is the border collie, and they keep their tails...
