Welcome to Roaming, a new series on my channel where I bring you along my travels around the world as I look to capture my bucket list images. Whether its portrait, fashion, or street photography, there is so much self-discovery to be had when you exercise your passion abroad. With this series, I hope to share the process, passion, and soul of that experience with you. In this episode, we fly to Mumbai, a city I have never been to before and hope to create some deeper roots in. Let’s get this started!
Special thanks to Yanchan for supplying some custom music for this video. Be sure to check him out on Spotify where he'll be releasing his India Beat Tape with sounds you heard in this show and more!

I'm a street photographer from Mumbai, and creativity here, it's endless. You clicked INDIA, in just that one portrait💪🏻
I truly appreciate that, Pratish. Thank you. For our season finale, we come back to India one more time. Stay tuned!
This video makes me so nostalgic for Bombay.
I have PTSD from hearing about your M6 falling on the floor. This series is definitely your best work on YT so far. Looking forward to more of this, man.
True that. Gajan's best work yet.
Thank you so much. This is a glimpse of what I'd like to do more of and look forward to getting there.
You're a great story teller, beautiful work!
Thank you so much!
Gajan, you have blossomed into a great storyteller. That pic was a masterclass in composition.
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate the support.
This was awesome Gajan, definitely your best video yet! When the world allows, I’d love to see you continue this series! 😁👌🏼
Thank you! Will do!
Great work Gajan ; I can see why you are proud of that great portrait you got. Looking forward to more!
Thank you very much!
Great video Gajan! I love the premise for this series and, as always, your compositions are awesome.
Thanks for watching! I truly appreciate that.
Blown away, this is amazing 👌 I can't wait for more!
Thank you brother! Excited to produce the next ones.
Love this new concept. Excellent video and deep ending. Hope to see more of this kind of content.
Thank you! I have at least three more slated for this year. Stay tuned!
Truly amazing Gajan! I enjoyed your video, your insights, and your photographs. Kudos!
Thank you Andrzej! Truly appreciate you watching.
Man I enjoyed this from start to finish. Keep up the great work GB
Thanks, will do!
Excellent piece! Everything about it, the images, location, music, insight, beautiful models. High quality!! Keep it up bro!
Thanks a lot!
Yooooooooo!!!! This was sooo good. I stopped the video a few times just to take a look at the photos, also, to reflect on what you said. Visual and audible gems all day hahaha. Congrats man! Congrats on trying something new, I really love this format and hoping to do the same, Anthony Bourdain style. So it puts a huge smile on my face seeing one of my peers with the same interest and actually DOING IT! Big big congrats. I haven't seen a video on youtube that put a smile on my face like this one in a little while. Keep going.
You have no idea how much I appreciate that. All the work and effort over the last year and half was working toward this. This is what I'd want to do entirely. To hear you say that is truly humbling brother. When I was producing this video, I visualized several people in the creator community that I respect and thought what would they want from a video like this. You were one of those individuals. I respect your humility and passion for your craft. And your work inspires me brother. Thank you!
dude 🙌🏽 🙌🏽 great video , great story , great images, very humble and raw . its a package video one can play it in theater /Netflix thanks for sharing 🙌🏽
Thank you so much. I truly appreciate the support!
Excellent video and truly beautiful images Gajan! Mumbai seems like photographer’s heaven. Definitely a dream destination for me along with other parts of India. Love your message about being a conscious traveler. That’s something I believe in 100%. That’s what can make travel a hundred times better more meaningful experience. Stay safe and stay blessed 👍🏾
Thank you so much!
Great video Gajan! Shots looks amazing👌
Thank you so much brother! Truly appreciate you checking it out.
Great narrative, great shots, great vibe. Awesome video man, i'm sold bro

Thank you! Looking to have at least three more episodes this year.

Loving your work man! Thank you for sharing your content!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Love this, dude. Beautiful images, great message.
Thank you brother. I appreciate the kind words Devan.
Another great one man. You keep raising the bar with every video.
I appreciate that! This has been on the list for some time and I am happy to bring it to life. Thanks for watching!
Man, this is quality content! Really enjoyed watching this piece and liked the variety of photos, as well as the good balance between you talking and images from your trip. Glad you were able to get your Leica fixed! How did your photographic eye change in the course of your stay? I imagine the first days in a city like Mumbai to be extremely overwhelming that you simply want to take photos of everything. Great series!
It was really overwhelming! And at times intimidating. There was a lot of self talk and just telling myself to shoot often and write the story. Use the frame to compose as best as possible and write the story. My would just dart around look for story material. Most of the shots weren’t shared, but this practice of just constantly looking and shooting often led to a good amount of useable results. Thanks for watching!
Amazing video and great insights, thank you so much. And yes, you nailed that portrait man...
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for watching!
@@GajanBalan I never miss one.. love all your advice and insights... you are partially responsible for my Fuji switch :)
Found your channel fairly recently and really enjoy it. This video was something else, I like that it is about photography but also so much more. Thank you.
I truly appreciate that. Hoping to bring more videos of this nature in the coming months. Thanks for watching!
This was lovely, pure and simple passion
Truly appreciate the support!
Beautiful, Gaj!
Hugh! Thank you so much!
Really enjoyed this, great editing.
Thanks for watching!
Digging this new series! Keep it up 👍
Thanks! Will do!
Fabulous - thanks for sharing your Mumbai experience - I'm experimenting with my X-Pro3 and X100V film simulations/quick menu settings - looking forward to improving my capture settings so with better jpgs I'll be spending less time behind the computer. Also, looking forward to your future videos.
Glad it was helpful! I made videos on both those subjects. I hope they help you in some way. Thanks for watching!
Yo I really like this video. Keep up the amazing work
Truly appreciate the continued support brother. Thank you!
Hi Gajan. What a stunning video. Your enthusiasm and enjoyment is evident and really came across. It was great you focused on the people the place and the art of photography. I love gear, probably more than the next man, but this formula suits you. My imagery ( up until lockdown) was all about my travels and experiences and having had this taken away I would swap a camera for a plane ticket anytime. Stay well my friend and look forward to more of the same. Warmest regards from the desert. Steve. Dubai.
Thank you so much Steven. Looking forward to bringing more of this content in the coming months. Stay safe!
"You don't need a new camera to create great art". I always go back and forth with myself thinking that I want to switch from fuji to canon. But then I go to you channel and look at your videos and it brings me back home. Thank you for your great content.
I appreciate that. Thank you!
Loved this video Gajan. Was going back again and again to see those awesome snaps of my home town. And that snap at 9:41 conveyed an entire life's story in one snap. Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much. I truly appreciate the kind words. And that shot really does mean a lot to me. Thanks for watching!
Love this man. I'm in love with India. Spent sometime in Goa and Pune the capturing street photography was just awesome. I love it man. The culture reminds me so much of my native roots of Africa. Just keep doing your thing man and do Africa when you can.
I look forward to being able to visit Africa soon. Really high on my list. Thanks for watching!
Shots are great
Thank you for watching Scott!
Great video!
Thank you!
I definitely can confirm that quality of light, it's the same up here in New Delhi. Really nothing quite like it where I'm from in the US, and it's made for some amazing photos over the last couple of years.
Keep up the great work!
Nice! Thanks for watching!
Excellent video. The music is great 👍
Thank you very much!
Great work, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Good video. Having been to Mumbai, I agree with your comments. One thing you did not mention is how friendly and welcoming the people are and how receptive to having their photo take. All of India is great, confronting at times , but brilliant for photography.
Yes, true! I alluded to it in a more broad way, but you're right, the people are remarkable.
🙌🏽 🙌🏽 🙌🏽
Thanks for watching!
Gajan Balan thank you so much for sharing lots of things... im still watching some of your videos...🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 keep safe always Sir...😷
I truly appreciate the support brother. Thank you!
Amazing video. Wish I could click “like” more then once!
Haha! Thank you so much Marlon! I appreciate the support brother.
Yeah but which camera should I b... Jokes 😛
Couldn't decide which one was better. The storytelling or the pictures. Both were pretty f-ing (shutter sound) amazing. Great work!👍
Haha! Thanks for watching brother.
Yooo this series is gonna make you FAMOUS bro mark my words
Haha! Thank you so much for watching.
"What you need is purpose...use that as a compass to guide your decisions."
That is very succinct and well stated. I may borrow that statement and pass that on to my kids. I actually used that mentality to put together one of my photo bags. I made some unorthodox choices but each lens in the bag has a distinct purpose and contributes to the overall synergy of the kit. Conversely that mentality also made realize that there are some lenses in my collection that need to be sold.
I went through a sizeable "sell off" last year and whittled down my gear. Hope to do a bit more when the dust settles. There is such power in simplicity and focus. Thanks for watching!
I like your channel, Super, monsoon best time to shot in Mumbai I was there 2 years ago. That’s a lot of gear you took. Wow. Did you not get hassled in customs. When are you going to share the pictures you made. Really looking forward to seeing them.Keep up the excellent channel.
Thanks for watching! Customs hassled me a lot 😂. Follow me on Instagram for more.
@@GajanBalan Ah customs, way back when before digital. They wanted me to handed in my Contax SLR and collect it when I was leaving the country again.Hell no I said. Ok I will follow up on Instagram. Stay safe. Take care.
🙏🏾
✊🏾
I stay in mumbai... N things hv changed... I was happy to see ppl without maskin ur video.... Feelings like history.... I wush i hd clicked more images
I do miss being in Mumbai. Thanks for watching!
I am so with you for the Xpro 3 experience in the streets ! I have it always on my neck and use it most of the time in manual (except AF)... didn’t expect that because I usually am in Aperture priority before with my others cameras. But now, I love the dials and aperture ring so much, make me play more with my settings. A joy to use ! As for colors, yes, countries like India and Asian in general, like here in China, especially at night with all the neons, you are forced to shoot in colors almost all the time 😂
I tried jpg+Raw, but with Capture One, the differences between both is so thin (just the default settings are softer, but colors are identical to me), I ditch the jpg and shoot only RAW. And nice thing is if I shoot for exemple Acros (I am slowly falling in love with it) in RAW, C1 will but my picture in Acros when I import. I don’t know if Lr does that too, but it’s very cool !
Thanks for the video, like this format !
Thanks for sharing! And happy to hear you enjoyed this video.
@@GajanBalan did u use XP3/classic neg on that awesome portrait?
Great video. Really interesting
Thank you for watching, Stephen.
@@GajanBalan I've now watched 2 of your videos. I'm thinking of getting the X100v - good information, thanks.
Which was your most used lens on the Fuji for this trip? I like your videos, man. Btw, I almost had a heart attack too when you said that. That's like winning the lottery! :-)
Thanks for watching! It was definitely the 35mm F1.4. Almost all the digital shots were captured on that lens. I'll be doing an episode later this year about my stop in Chennai and have even more shots to share. Stay tuned!
That intro animation is really strong graphic / motion design.
Thank you!
So did you take any b&w shots in Mumbai?
A good amount at first, but then opted to shoot in colour. There’s a handful that I converted to B&W afterwards though. But definitely captured more colour than I thought. Thanks for watching!
Greetings Mr. Gajan. This was a great short documentary bit about how you interpreted your Indian experience through your images and personal insights. One line roused my senses though when you mentioned that it was a good thing you bought the XPro3 with you due to its durable weather resistant construction against India's dusty environment. Having mentioned on this video that you emphatize with people's buying decisions, which would you recommend then? The XPro3 or XT4 with regards to toughness? I'm not a vlogger and only intending to use the cam body for general documentary photography (Family/portraits/travel/food/street) as a hobbyist (Will be investing on Fuji having sold all of my Nikon DSLR gear)
Though I would much rather have a LCD tilting screen to be less conspicuous doing street photography, do you think it's worth the sacrifice should I opt for the XT4's features (Better AF, IBIS, Longer Batt, 300K shutter actuation life)? Also, is it fun to shoot street with XPro3's screen tilted down for waist level shooting VS the XT3?
Thank you again Mr. Gajan. :)
Thank you so much for watching. And that is a very tough decision. The XP3 seems better built overall, especially with the inclusion of titanium plating, that when I hold this against an XT4, it feels more solid. However, this really comes to your lifestyle and how you shoot. As a photography first camera, I personally lean toward the XP3. It makes the process more enjoyable than the XT4. For me, the XT4 is a video solution and B camera when I need it. Based on what you mentioned, I feel like the XP3 may bring you more pleasure. In short, weigh the shooting experience of both cameras and pick the one you enjoy most. Hope this helps!
@@GajanBalan I see Gajan. Let me think about it. We have a promo for the XT4 currently. Instead of 1-year warranty, it's extended to 2-years and an extra battery. The XP3 currently has no promo. :(
Curious though, what about the XP3's ISO dial? Do you use it often with its intended purpose (lifting then turning which could be quite a nuisance) or you've programmed yours to "C"?
@fujifilm, here is your next mentor.
Hahaha, let’s get them on board. Thanks again Mohammed!
OMG you look so young in this video. Ha Ha
😂
Moral of the story is ..,trade it for a MP..
Haha, that’s one takeaway I guess. Thanks for watching!
