Beautiful episode. I think the best way for a culture, a people and group of humans living their lives to not be fetishized, is to captured by those that are emotionally connected to the well-being and honest portrayal of those people. You being invested and empathetic at the core is what makes your images pop! Well done.
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾
100% agree when you're in the place you came to photograph, just photograph. The reels, the social media, video etc. Don't do it. My best days were when I forgot my phone and especially not making a youtube video. You're lucky you have a video man though cause this was so good!
Also the school portraits were amazing. Especially the girl. 👏
Thank you brother, definitely something we gotta champion more and more. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
Bravo! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 This was fine dining for the eyes and soul.
Thank you so much 🙏🏾
Wow. This was just an incredible hit of inspiration that I did not expect today! Thank you (and your team) for investing the time, effort, and energy to telling this story and sending this message out to the world-I’m excited see you as an artist and this documentary series make waves 👊🏽
Thank you brother, truly appreciate the support 🙏🏾
Lots of food for thought. Thank you for sharing Gajan. I'll be remembering specifically "photography in service of others". Love it!
Thank you Luke, truly appreciate you sharing that 🙏🏾
Really inspiring épisode. Thanks
Thanks for watching ✌🏾
inspiring photographic leadership, refined and relatable
Holy shit my dude. This was amazing, pure art!
Thank you David!
those are strong words, keep us inspiring! 😍
this video is Oscar worthy.
Hello,
Thank you for this video
It seems that you use "godox" flashes ? with your Leica M11. Which transmitter do you use? In which mount?
Thanks
Thanks, I just used a Godox XPro-F trigger in manual mode. I’ve since migrated to Profoto though because the Godox gave me some issues.
@@GajanBalan ok, thanks 🙏🏿
hi! i love this video. may i know the location of the first place you shot at? i'm from chennai as well!
this is truly inspiring ! thank you
Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
story telling on point
Appreciate you brother 🙏🏾
Bro you saying some real shit
Thank you brother 🙏🏾
Great video again Gajan! I love your longer videos and your photography is insanely good! I have two questions; will you be doing something like this in Mumbai or other parts of India outside of Tamil Nadu; and 2. what is the genesis of the name 'Church & Street'?
Definitely looking to feature more cities across India. You can learn more about the name on the About page at churchxstreet.com
Lawwwwd this was an amazing episode. Also the man is out there with just the range - no visoflex. This was a special episode. I’ve been to India 🇮🇳 and the people there are truly special. You captured it so beautifully. 🎉🎉🎉 can’t wait for the next!
Haha, thank you so much 🙏🏾
I have to say two things:
1. This Documentary was so good. It was interesting, it was displayed with such a great since of Love and passion for our craft.
2. I started watching your channel due to your love of Fujifilm. My Sony A1 is my work horse, but my 100V is my fun everyday day camera. I always said that if Fuji would put a full frame sensor in a XT5, it would be the perfect camera. The videos you be making as of late, makes me think that the Leica M11 is that camera.
Thank you for your content! Your Art is pretty Dope.
Thank you so much for sharing, truly appreciate the kind words 🙏🏾
Great episode! - Love seeing this side of Chennai. What are you planning to do with the photographs - can we expect to see a photo book come out of this?
I was truly blown away watching this! Thank you for creating this Gajan! Insane! 👏
Truly appreciate the support brother. Thank you!
dude i can't believe you are in chennai so close to kerala you should come here as well it's gonna be so cool.
I hope to visit Kerala soon!
This was fucking DOPE! and tru! Loved this!
It has been a phenomenal adventure to join you. I learned in Nepal that bringing bottled water is a must.
Wow wow wow this first episode was amazing and I can’t wait to see more. Such a beautiful city with such beautiful people. I loved your visit to the school, that whole portion touched my heart. Excited for what’s to come!
Thanks so much. Been a long time coming, but hoping to drop another episode this year before picking back up next year.
Oh wow Ive been sleeping on your channel Gajan! This was an excellent video that I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish and got so much out of it! The point you make at 22:00 - I couldn't agree mote, especially as a fellow BIPOC photographer. The enotee gente and industry has been built on a very western and biased persepctove. Nothing wrong with this, but, as you point out in this episode, the important thing is to lead by example, and hopefully educate people so that we can all do better. Loved this video. So well put together, and so well thought out. So many gems.
Thanks so much 🙏🏾
Can you tell me which background stand is that you used ,with the c-stands
N4 pakkam thaan last week suthikitu irundhen. miss panitane meet up ah.
What a journey. The photos, the behind the scenes, the commentary, the entire story was a movie. Can’t wait for more
Thank you brother. Looking forward to dragging your ass on one of these trips soon lol
come on bro so good!
Appreciate you brother. Next time, you’re joining us ✊🏾
@@GajanBalan say less my brother xx
Gajan, I am seeing this one year later, but I want to give you feedback. This is great. Your presentation style is so refined and comfortable. I love what you are doing here.
I was fortunate to be able to visit India two years ago and spent most of my time in Assam and New Delhi. I only saw a fraction of the country and know that it is a wonderful place and I can’t wait to return.
Thank you. Truly appreciate you taking the time to share. I’m hoping to have a few more episodes this year 🤞🏾
Thank you for your key piece of advice, Mr. Balan; "You gotta practice your photography, everything is a distant second".
I enjoy your videos and find them both interesting and informative. Keep up the good work my friend.
Thank you Pete, truly appreciate that 🙏🏾
I see you using live view a lot to nail critical focus. Thinking about a Visioflex?
A lot of the close focus requires live view, but funny enough, I picked up the Visoflex after this trip.
this is one damn good video. you are a great story teller
Truly appreciate the kind words brother, thank you 🙏🏾
This is amazing man, haven’t watched a full UA-cam video this long without being distracted in forever!
Thank you, truly appreciate the support 🙏🏾
Yooooo this intro is so dope, giving me 70s movie vibes
Fuck this was good! You’re a good man Gajan. Keep it coming. Subscribed 👌
Truly appreciate the support Sherif, thank you 🙏🏾
I always enjoy your content but I have to say this is one of your best. A genuine look at the photographer as a person interacting with others as part of the picture. not just the one holding the camera.
Truly appreciate that Patrick, thank you ✌🏾
Can't thank more with seeing the journey where Im surround sound by its just amazing !
Thanks for watching ✌🏾
Loved this journey and your real thoughts, how you connect and how it's done.
Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
WOW. hIn the midst of all the internet noise, click bait content.... my guy out here doing REAL FUCKING WORK on the ground, telling real stories and giving us some of the best photos we've ever seen. We need a full season with cities around the entire world.
Appreciate all the support brother, the journey is multiples easier with you alongside. Next episode we tackle together ✊🏾
Such a powerful heartwarming and inspiring episode Gajan👏 Well done. Am looking forward to the next one.
Thank you so much 🙏🏾
Love the message at the end. Will definitely take that to heart as I grow as a photographer.
Thank you Rashod 🙏🏾
I can’t tell you how Inspiring this was to watch. Thank you 🙏
Thank you Steve, truly appreciate it 🙏🏾

Great video man. Looking forward to the series.
Thank you Nathan 🙏🏾
Absolutely killing it! 🤯🤯🤯
My brother!!! Thank you for watching fam 🙏🏾
Inspiring documentary
Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
Darn well said
Wonderful storytelling. Fabulous editing. Your interactions with the people made it special. I always learn from your point of view.
I just discovered this channel and i'm so happy i did. I feel like i've found something to help me drive my photography in to a new lane. A lane where i'm more aware of the moment a not focused so much on gear and all the other factors that takes away from the moment and connection. Thank you
Beautiful photos and inspiring words to keep photography authentic. Thank you for this amazing work and the beautiful portraits of Chennai!
Why is the name of the series „Church & Street“? Did I missed the explanation?
No, I haven’t revealed it in this video. Members of my club can see the brief explanation here www.churchxstreet.com/about
@@GajanBalan Interesting I will check it out :)
By far the best photography channel. Are you guys shooting these on the Komodo or something smaller?
Thank you for the kind words. This was shot on a mix of the Canon C70 and Komodo.
@@GajanBalan one other question how is the black holding on on your m11? Do you ever regret not getting the silver with the brass top plate?
Very meaningful work. Inspiring
Thank you 🙏🏾
Another thoughtful video . Thank you .
Thanks for watching ✌🏾
woah what a journey... Nature gifts us when we throw us completely out there... 😍🥰 Loved your experience....
bravo, bravíssimo!
Thank you so much 🙏🏾
I love this colour grading
Thank you Marlene 🙏🏾
Absolutely loved this video! This was one of your very best, if not the best in the years I’ve been following you. Bravo! More like this please!
On a personal note, I love seeing your trips back to India. I can’t even put into words how much I miss living there.
I truly appreciate that Tye. Really happy how this turned out and looking forward to bringing more throughout the year.
Pleasw keep these coming. Such a beautiful depiction of my hometown
Absolutely love this film. The thoughts at the end about how to use photography for genuine connection and desire to give back, rather than for humanitarian clout. Whenever I travel away from home I try to be extra conscientious about all these things. The last thing I want is for my work to serve as a cliché heartthrob that looks down in condescending pity upon whole nations of people. Coming in with an open heart and a ready desire to give is absolutely key as you said!
Thank you Matthew, truly appreciate you sharing these words. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
loved this
Thanks so much for watching brother, truly means a lot ✊🏾
It's an amazing experience watching this whole Documentation.WOW!
A wonderful message.
Thanks for watching ✌🏾
Wow, Gajan... This is incredible. I loved everything about this. It's really amazing to see the evolution of your work. That's amazing that you were able to spend time with Dee and her father and to see them in their element (getting recognized for their hard work and music creation). My daughter used to come home from her daycare singing "cuckoo, cuckoo..." and we couldn't figure out where she got that from until we happened to see Dee and Arivu's music video for Enjoy Enjaami at a birthday party months later. From that day until probably a few months after, I used to listen to that song all the time. And, the music video for that song was just as powerful. So, to see the behind-the-scenes access that you had is mind-boggling. A lot of people may not understand this, but this is literally the equivalent of the behind-the-scenes photos that we see from greats like Jim Marshall.
When you started shooting portraits for the kids I thought, "Surely, he's going to pull out the GFX or maybe a fuji body with autofocus.." but nope, you stuck with the 35mm on the M11. I appreciated seeing that commitment, especially understanding that you have tools that are perhaps better suited. Anyways, I could ramble on forever, but I just wanted to let you know that you nailed it! I'm inspired, and I'm really happy for you. Take care!
Gary, thank you so much for taking the time to share this. Truly appreciate the kind words. Thank you 🙏🏾
What a wonderful production this is. Fantastic story telling. I just got back from India. My daughter was married in Bhubaneswar. This was my first time in India. It was like trying to take photographs on a water slide! So much going on! So fast and we had so many family. But fantastic people and what a culture. I can’t wait to spend more time since my daughter and her husband plan on living there part time in the future. You have inspired and shown me ways to give back on my next trips! Keep up the fantastic work.
Thanks and congratulations! Enjoy the journey.
I enjoyed this journey with you. Awesome footage and respect for the HUGE BALLS you have carrying the equipment you have through the streets.
Haha, thanks for watching ✌🏾
Great work Gajan! The video, the photos, the storytelling, all top level. Also, watching you grow and challenge yourself over the years is inspiring. Keep it up! 👍🏼
Truly appreciate the support Craig. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
Love, love, LOVE your work, Gajan. I've followed you for years. Always appreciate how you shine a light on your culture through your art. Respect, brother.
Truly appreciate the support Joel, thank you!
I think I found this video at the perfect time. Photography is a journey much like never ending rollercoaster ride with certain ups and downs, but when you commit to it and start adding purpose and value for it there is no turning back. Art for art sake. Art in this episode reassures me that I have given my commitment to photography and I am going to cherish it. Thanks for this gem Gajan.
Truly appreciate you sharing that, thank you🙏🏾
Fantastic production, wonderful execution, I appreciate you sharing this message with me and the community. Cheers!
Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
Oh man how is this not like a Netflix/HBO special or something?! This is sooo good man! Can't wait for the next one!
Thank you brother. Hoping to have a few more out this year.
I’ve never been to Chennai before but I’ve been to Kerala before as a kid. It’s nice to see some more content about India that’s not just Varanasi. India is a super diverse country with a lot to see.
Great work 🙏
Thank you
Man this episode hit me right in the heart. Being kind and meeting people as equals. Even or especially if they are not as privileged as we are. Giving them a voice and dignity. This is the best way to do your work.
Thank you, truly appreciate you sharing this 🙏🏾
Best half an hour I spent on YT lately. Makes me want to go out more often Gajan, much appreciated!
Truly appreciate the kind words Robin. Thanks for watching ✌🏾
By far the best video that you ever published. It felt more like an documentary :) I really enjoyed it
Thank you so much, truly appreciate it 🙏🏾
100%. Only person holding you back is you. Great stuff!
Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
Great Episode! Completely sincere and honest!! "Someone else's culture is not our aesthetic"
🙏🏾
Awesome video. And i think it is fitting that you chose Chennai for your first episode. All the best wishes this initiative
Thank you!
Beautiful, inspiring and heartfelt video, Gajan ❤ Can’t wait for more
Thank you so much 🙏🏾
That was a refreshing video on "street photography" / "documentary photography". That part with "If you are a photographer you have to go harder [...] you have to do this and that [...]" shows exactly the instagram-ification or everything needs to be instant. Instead it is probably to shut off from the world, find your vision and intention in your work, to that work and build up that full body of work. When you think you are ready come out of your locked down basement and show your result.
That photo of that little girl is amazing! In that setting she somehow show with her self-chosen pose and gaze some kind of a grace of a self-confident adult, show her self-being and the surroundings are not the matter of the photograph - it is her, her presence. Well captured and well done!
Somehow YouTUbe don't allow me to edit my message above.
I'd like to add: Great video and looking forward to see more episodes!
Truly appreciate you sharing this. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
12:46 - What a moment. ✨ This is killer. Thanks for taking the time to produce a journey like this for the viewer.
