- In this video, I will show you how to do a full front brake job (new pads, new rotors, new hardware, and re-greasing the guide pins) on a 2012 Toyota Tacoma. The same process is applicable for all 2005-2015 Tacomas with 5-lug wheels.
Thanks for watching the video. If it was helpful please like and comment. Don't forget to subscribe to see what we work on next.
You make it look so easy.. great video and thank you for sharing this with us..
You are welcome, glad it helped (:
this video was spot on. i saw other videos first and there calipers were different than my 2010 tacoma. thanks for the video
Glad it helped. Yeah, most people have the fancy trucks, not much out there for us cheapskates with the base models!
Thank you, helped immensely.
10/10 the exact same thing I got on mine. Everyone else got some 6 lug 4x4 bullshit model. Great video.
Lol cheapskates ftw!
Just what I needed to see. Thank you
Thank you, glad we could help (:
I've watched parts of 20-25 videos here. This is the first one that had the type of caliper and hardware that my 2006 Tacoma has. Finally got some helpful info here. Very well done video. Thanks.
You are welcome, seems most people have the fancy-pants trucks and we have the cheap and basic one!
I've been looking at quite a few vids on front brake replacement on Taco. This is the best best best vid on changing the pads. My pads were very tight in the brake bracket. I'm going to look at freeing them up some. They must have been dragging and wore my pads out early. Thanks for the good vid. sub/likie
Make sure the caliper pins are lubed. Glad it was helpful.
Using a 5/16 bolt as shown at 2:20 stripped the threads on my rotor, I used the correct metric bolt on the other rotor and it came off without any issue. I'm off to a garage to get a mechanic to remove the stripped rotor.
This was my 1st brake job. Really appreciate this video. 5 stars. Very thorough and helpful!!!
Glad it helped!
There are quite a few videos that cover the topic of brake pad replacement for Tacomas. This was the only one that actually corresponded to what I was faced with once I got the wheel off my 2015 4-cylinder Toyota Tacoma extended cab. Great video and very well done, thank you!! Sure there are a lot of highway miles on my truck but still, I was pleasantly surprised to find a bit of wear left on the old pads after 109,200 miles. Okay, I'd rather be lucky than good! Thanks again!
Yeah most people bought the fancier versions but I'm a cheapskate.😆 Glad the video was of help.
Thanks man, everyone else seems to have a different version of caliper than what you have here - which is same as mine. Well done on the editing and concise info.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
Great video man thanks, simple, thorough, going into the job with confidence 👍
You are welcome, glad it helped!
Ty! Awesome video. I have a 2012 5 lug reg cab white. Great truck! Did you know if a 5 lug can use 235 size tires with no problems? Please let me know. Thank you!!!
We have actually sold the truck since making this video so I can't go out and check, but I think we had Goodyear Wranglers in 235/75/15 on it. They were larger than stock, anyways.
Very well done video. I really appreciate you creating this, made my brake job super easy today!
Thank you. I'm glad it was helpful.
Thanks for this. Just did mine yesterday.
Awesome! You're welcome. Glad we could help!
Thanks for the video, I have a 2015 tacoma, it has been so easy to work on basic maintenance so far,
Glad it helped!
Just changed my front pads and rotors on my '10. Too EZ. Thorough instruction. . Thanks man.
You're welcome, glad I could help.
Excellent! I would add on the break-in that it's important to allow the breaks to cool down while driving. Do not stop and leave your foot on the breaks after breaking them in while they are still hot! Breaking in the brakes does quite a few things, one of them is transferring a layer of the brake pad material onto the rotor, an even layer. You have to pick and get to the right road to do this. Just don't drive very fast or use the brakes very much in getting there. By then you should have a small of embedding going on and then when you get to the faster Road I go up to 70 and break down to about 10 mph, then back up to 70 break hard down to about 10 miles an hour and I do this several times and then I drive without using the brakes until they cool. Now the important part, if while they are very hot you put your foot on the brake while you are stopped, the pad will stick, making an imprint on the rotor. You will then have the beginning of an uneven rotor wear. When it hits at that spot it will not grip as well, creating, over time, a pulsation shuttering shimmy shaking vibration, whatever you want to call it. I know plenty of people will say that this is not necessary and that their brakes have always been just fine (but perhaps not as good as they could have been.) Also depending on your driving conditions from your house you may have done this embedding naturally.
Thanks for your video. Well explained and illustrated, great and much appreciated help, blessings.
Thank you, glad it was helpful.
Omfg finally the correct video I've been searching for......
Thank u
Glad i could help you out.
Yeah great video thanks from the 5 lug guys out there
Glad it was helpful!

You just helped me a lot!!!! Thank you.
Your welcome! Glad I could help.
10/10 will watch again in 70,000 miles
Lol
Thank you... excellent
Glad you enjoyed it
You are awesome thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
worked like a charm thanks . How about the rear ? Thanks brrother
Haven't worn them out yet 😉. But I will once they need it.
Hey brother thanks for this info. Where could I get a new roof drip molding for my 09 Tacoma? Cannot find at online less than like $100 or more
Unfortunately I don't know. Supply chains be crazy.
What a damn good video. Whats that metal playing at the end?
Thanks! Just free to use music from UA-cam.
After installing did you get a burning smell ? If so for how long ?
Thank you.make one video doing the rear brakes please
Thank you. The truck doesn't need them yet so I will get to it eventually.
You are the bomb
Thank you
Man, this is literally the video I needed. Thanks a ton! Btw what size tires are those? I wanted to upgrade my tire size but I was worried it would screw my Tacoma up. Thanks!!
You're welcome, glad it helped. The tires are 235/75/15, the biggest that will fit without modifying the truck.
@@jkfeatherranch I have the same brand and size, no rubbing and it feels like a truck and no mpg change
@@jkfeatherranch Where did you buy the rotors?
Awesome video! Did you happen to every change out your front wheel hub assembly? THX
Unfortunately, but thankfully, I have never had to do that
Question?? Topic the Shim? Did u replace them or don’t use them on the new brake pad
Sorry if I'm not understanding your question but I believe I just used whatever came in the kit
Should the pads or anything be making contact or a noise on the rotor before even putting tire back on?
It is normal for the pads to rub the rotor ever so slightly with the pedal out. If they are rubbing more, you might want to make sure the pins are lubricated and can slide freely.
Dam autozone gave me these brake pads, and I told them an 05 v6 6 lug prerunner 😡😡😡, the main thing was to change the brake rotors because one of them is warped, I bought the rotors oem from a dealer so those are good, but dam 😡!!!!
Rotors are so cheap that I always change them at the same time as the pads. And yeah getting the wrong part sucks.
jf the 2 caliper pins one has a oring, does it go on the top or bottom
I honestly don't remember other than to tell you it goes wherever it came out of :(
Do you have slightly mushy brakes on this 5 lugger? I have new pads and rotors all oem. And replaced fluid and front brake lines. But still feels mushy at initial braking then the brakes kick in. Rear shoes have also been changed.
I wouldn't say mushy but at times it feels like the truck feels a little too heavy to stop quickly. Probably just the way it is.
Quick question, I got the same truck.
Did some repairs myself missed how to messed up. The bracket the holds the lower ball joint in place. Can you tell me what is the direction on installing it. Curve inward or outwards?
Unfortunately I haven't done any suspension work so I don't know the answer to that one yet.
Just to help anyone else out, the bolt you need to remove the rotor is 8MM X 1.25, not a 5/16 bolt
You might be right, given that most things on vehicles are metric these days, but honestly I had a 5/16 laying around and it fit.
How often do you change the pads and rotors?
When they start making a horrible grinding noise lol.
@@jkfeatherranch lol got it.
@@yokedsan I am a cheap bastard, that is also why I do them myself.
@@jkfeatherranch well i am too, thats why im watching your vid lol thanks man
@@yokedsan lol enjoy the savings man and pass it along
2 Wheel Drive Version
Yes
Tacomas will stop on a dime!
Unless you're hauling 1,000 lbs of crap in the bed, with more on a trailer behind you!
Don't suppose you could do a rear brake video, brother?
When they need to be changed, I can do that
i would have torqd the calipers with a torq wrench
There was no room to get one in there unfortunately.
Darn the clips the sent me were too big!
Make sure they didn't accidentally send you the pads for a 6-lug
NOT A 5/16 bolt.. ffs it's a Japanese vehicle. USE METRIC SIZE 8!!!!
A 5/16 worked just fine and is what I had laying around. It's not like cross threading a rotor I'm going to throw away matters.
