Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another first time reaction made possible via PATREON with Jacques Brel and his live performance of "Quand on n'a que l'amour." Brel always takes me places, this one a very warm but beautiful song that speaks truth. Different circumstances describing what love can be used for in many ways to get by in life. See it unfold before your eyes!

Here in Belgium, this song is very often used during wedding ceremonies.
I remember that at the moments of the Brussels’s attacks in 2016, Johnny Halliday sang this song as an hommage. He did the same a few months later when there was another attack in Nice.

"Ne me quitte pas" is his masterpiece for me.. When I was a kid, I couldn't watch him, I was scared, because of his big teeth, the sweat, the screaming.. He looked like a mad angry man! I couldn't get passed this. So only later, as an adult, I discovered the beauty of his performances. It's a pleasure to see them through your fresh eyes and ears, Dereck! Thank you from France for sharing this!

The song's structure is simple, but the chord progression is pretty insane, the lyrics and the connected chord progression are what makes the whole song.

    🙏

This humble man initially studied to be a priest before quitting to be an amazing singer and actor. He finished his life in the Marquesas Islands in the Pacific ocean (like painter Gauguin). This.... This piece... He made two other versions of it I think, one of his greatest. Makes me cry everytime (and this time doesn't falter... The chills, OMG). My parents had it at their wedding. It's the expression of every incarnations of Love: romantic, parent/child, mankind's love.
As for Brel, you can be shure he had his heart broken more than once. His authenticity and moral elegance have been noted throughout his career. He's the Best of the Best IMHO and if more people knew French, this guy would be up there with the most legendary artists of mankind. (The "trilogy" of signers songwriters of his era is formed with him, Brel, with Georges Brassens and Leo Ferré. The text, what is said with words, is at least half of the power of their songs. Their lyrics have been released as poetry books.)

    When We Only Have Love
    When we only have love
    To share with one another
On the day of the great journey
That is this great love of ours

    When we only have love
    My love, you and I
    To burst with joy
    Every hour and every day

    When we only have love
    To live our promises
    Without any other wealth
    To believe in

    When we only have love
    To furnish with marvels
    And cover with sunshine
    The ugliness of the suburbs

    When we only have love
    As an unique reason
    As an unique song
    And an unique help

    When we only have love
    To dress the morning
    The poor and the scoundrels
    With velvet coats

    When we only have love
    To offer as a prayer
For the evils of the Earth
    On single minstrels

    When we only have love
    To offer those
    Whose only battle
Is to long for the day

    When we only have love
    To draw a path
    And force destiny
    At every crossroad

    When we only have love
    To speak to cannons
    And nothing but a song
    To persuade a drum
    Then, without having anything
    But the force of loving
We will have on our hands
    Friends around the world

If you watch interviews with Brel (Translated in English) his intellect and views on life were very interesting. Just like Leonard Cohen, you could listen to speak for hours.

One of my favorites by Brel is 'Mathilde'. There is a great cover version of that one by Chimene Badi, if you are looking for a slightly more modern interpretation.
