I just match the length of bands that it came with. can adjust a smidge if i want more or less pull. I never have needed to use a formula. have all my guns band lengths written down. If you buy a gun without bands, I'd call the manufacturer and they can tell you. Too tight or loose or bands can make a gun inaccurate.
I measure from the muzzle hole to where the band will end at the wishbone once loaded. You then divide that number by the stretch ratio you want times 2. So let’s say your distance from muzzle hole to where the wishbone ends at loading notch is 48” and you want to stretch the bands 350%. Divide the 48” by 3.5. It gives you 13.71 X 2 = 27.42 so make the band 27 1/2”. If you want more stretch, say 375% then divide by 3.75. Hope this helps.
You can use the same formula for a roller gun except I use a rope to go from my pretension anchor point at the bottom of the gun, around the pulley and up to the anchor point minus the wishbone. So say that measurement is 90”, divide that total length by stretch ratio, say 3.5 and you get a band length of 25.7”. This would be one band so for a single roller you’d make two bands. Chris Coats also has a good roller gun series called Unrolling the Roller. His method is to use half the barrel length plus 5cm. So a 100cm barrel would use a 50cm plus 5 so 55cm band.
@@albertaraujo6358 great rule of thumb. Sorry for being a math Karen...but couldn't you just take your distance and multiply it by 0.57 (2 divided by 3.5)? Easy to remember "57 magnum" (obviously, it's .357 magnum, but 57 is easy enough to remember since both are guns, lol). 48" * 0.57 = 27.4"
@@albertaraujo6358 Awesome! Forgive my ignorance, but is 350-375% stretch a good average to shoot for? (no pun intended) Or is it different for different guns?
Love the intro the spearfishing videos. Wish these were available when I was first getting into spearfishing. Definitely still learning a lot from you so thanks. So people can google/youtube how-to tie videos the types of knots you used are called: Wishbone bead= double overhand stopper Removable wishbone= sheetsbend Knots to tighten the "double cinch"= two half-hitches
That’s a new way to do it for me. I always used .035 stainless safety wire, as that was what I was taught. A pair of pliers and side cutters and you’re in business. Just twist the wire with the pliers until you like what you see, cut off the twisted wire leaving about an inch of ‘tail’. Bend the tail piece over and stick the sharp end into the rubber band so you don’t poke yourself. Kinda looks like a haywire twist. You can over tighten them this way and actually cut the rubber band, but it’s pretty simple. Like you said, there are several ways to do it.
Aaron these videos are right on point! Great idea to do this playlist, it is really appreciated. I can't wait for the cheater band video as I struggle to load my gun(maybe I'm just too weak). 🤷
Last three years I’ve been learning to fish, while learning to fish from a SUP. Next on my list is spear fishing. Thank you so much for the great info!
Totally understand that. But These videos are for beginners and I don’t think they should be adjusting band lengths yet. They should be tying bands the same length that the gun came with from the manufacturer.

What is your formula for sizing the length of the band itself?

Metric conversion of band diameters:
9/16" ~ 14mm
5/8" ~ 16mm
3/4" ~ 19mm

have never heard of that, actually pretty cool. thanks for sharing
Perfect, never seen a video on how it’s done. Thanks to UA-cam and to you capt
can’t wait for the next one! I’ve been wanting to get into spearfishing and yeah i still got a lot to learn. 😅
Isn’t that a cubit of constrictor cord? Noah would be proud.
haha I believe you are correct
Wooo thank you Aaron for these detailed setup videos!
absolutely!
Man, this would have me so much money back in my diving days. Great vids man
A video I'll NEVER need. But.... I always comment and tap the thumbs up 👍 button to feed the algorithm monsters.
Thanks, Aaron.
thanks so much!
same :)
Thank you for this series.
Our pleasure!

Glad you enjoy them! That vid will be out on Saturday. They can be very helpful.

love to hear it! thank you!
Very cool, thanks Aaron! 👍
Aaron,
It would be nice if you discussed how to select band length and desired stretch ratio, 300%, 350%, 375%, 400%.

Great video! Keep 'em coming. How do you determine the correct band length for your gun?

@@KeyWestWaterman Roger that! Thanks!
I’m watching your whole playlist. Great videos a lot of information. I have a question is there a standard length for the bands?
Thank you!
Thank you for that video, which I have wanted to see from someone. I can save some money to make them myself.
way cheaper to tie them yourself!
Very helpful tutorial Aaron thank you.I think it's about time USA will change the measurement method to metric, much easier believe me!
Glad you enjoyed it! the USA rarely does anything that makes sense, but that would be a start.
@@KeyWestWaterman 😀
Your knot to the Loop is a Square Knot Aaron
Windex or foaming glass cleaner works great for lubing the bead. Vaseline will damage the band.
Awesome.
Hi, just getting into spearfishing. Would you say a weight belt is necessary for shallow water spearing? Thanks
if you plan on going beneath the surface of the water yes it is essential. If you plan on spearing from the surface not necessarily.
Note: The best lubricant for rubber products is WATER. Petroleum-based lubricants are not recommended. Spit yes though gross. works fine
lol

My dad loves watching you guys
Could I have a heart?
Pls
Great
How to stop the shooting line wrapping around the rubbers?
I don’t know unfortunately. I’ve never had that issue with a koah. I hear some manufacturers have issues with it.
LOL TNX 4 VID LOL
If not any good recommendations? Also looking for an agent for a new place.
my wife is a realtor down here. just good Madeleine Young Realtor and she'll come up
Thank you, sir!! I'll reach out...
Moving to the keys and want to start diving. What is your price for teaching?
unfortunately I don't offer charters anymore, just teach through my videos.
"knot" the only way😁
haha
do you go close to summer land key?
nope
💪👍✌
First!
haha!
Aaron, I did some backing up and noticed that you finally stopped calling this old 62 yr old part of your boys 'n girls intro. Thank you nephew😅😂
Just for this series. These videos aren't for the youngster. will be back!
