Mark Nelson is a brilliant fine artist, print-maker, cartoonist, and illustrator. His dad, Robert A. Nelson, was a genius as well… and my illustration professor!
LOVE Aliens/Predator comics. So underrated and so many great artists running through. A recent run that needs to be checked out is James Stokoe’s run “Aliens: Dead Orbit.”
Corproral Hicks was played by John Connor's dad, Michael Biehn. Bill Paxton played Private Hudson (brilliantly - "Game over, man."). Due to the terrible 'off-screen' deaths of Hicks and Newt in-between Aliens and Alien3, the characters' names were retconned for the colourised Omnibus version. They became Wilks and Billie.
I think maybe the biggest Kayfabe move of all is that Ed and Jim are stoppin' everyone else from makin' comics because we all here watchin' them instead. But I guess if they can make the videos and still produce awesome comics then we ain't got no damn excuses at all.
You guys are 100% right on the money about the duo shade in this series. I’ve NEVER seen it done this well. Mark A. Nelson’s art is spectacular on its own merit, but his duo tone treatment is mind-boggling in its detail, and adds SO much depth and character to this run. I love how he draws parts of backgrounds and textures with it. I actually almost found it distracting it’s so good. Like I’d look at the art in each panel for 30 seconds, then stare at the complexities of the duo tone for an additional minute or two. It’s actually a hard series to read because you want to linger on the art (and ridiculous shading!) for so long! Also Jim, I tracked down that War World comic right after I got this series based on the strength of that ad, and I can say Gary Davis’ art is phenomenal. I’ve found a couple books by him but not much, and was always wondering if he was one of those really good artists that I don’t know much about but you guys do. Maybe he would be worth looking more into for an episode? Thanks guys!
Michael Biehn played Hicks. He also played Sgt. Kyle Reese in first two Terminator movies. Keep going with the Aliens videos with the Sam Keith and Kelley Jones artwork. Paul Chadwick's CONCRETE as well.
I met Mark in Toronto in 1989 ,excellent illustrator and ez going to chat with! Dark Horse was and still is the king of license comics and their record shows its especially with Star Wars! Keep reading and making comix, guys!
Nelson really nailed how the Aliens looked. I was sure he was going to become huge after this series ended. I also thought the same for Denis Beauvais who paints the next series.
These Dark Horse Alien and Predator comics are what got me into buying in high school. Specifically the Den Beauvais series written by Mark Verheiden, really incredible airbrushed art. I was obsessed! Chris Warner's Predator, which you have covered before....so good
Love my 30th anniversary hardcover. From the pencils in the back it seems a lot of the artwork detail wise came together in the inking. I think the are reprinted under Marvel now.
Mark A Nelson has been on my radar since 1973. At 18-I was 21- he was already the best pencil artist I ever met. Amazing imagination and understanding of anatomy(not just people but animals and insects too!) His father Robert A Nelson was also an amazing draughtsman. Check out his stuff too. Hes NOT the whale artist -guy who paints whales, Amazing Keep up the good work guys!
Note that Ad for Mayhem. You mentioned Doug Mahnke, and he rebooted the Mask (formerly Masque) with John Arcudi for that short lived but under-rated anthology. The Mask stories for Mayhem were adapted into the Jim Carey movie. One of the early cinematic successes for Dark Horse along with Time Cop.
this was the first American book I avidly collected as a late teen, i have a few issues and the TPB, plus the 2nd series, and the Sam Kieth series (Earth War i think) and Kelley Jones etc etc. of course i got the Terminator and RoboCop ones too! hahahha I have a tattoo of the Alien from that reveal in Issue one on my right inside upper arm as well.....since 1993 baaabbbbaay hahahh

yes!
I really wish the films had continued the storylines from these comics, they were far more interesting than what was actually produced.
Mark A Nelson is the guy that did the Hero How to Draw lessons. He also has a new art book out about world building that is pretty cool.

Wait a minute, are you telling me that you are not making comics when listening to the Kayfabe bois? 😮

Great video! Mark Nelson is a great artist and a super nice guy.
Hicks survived Aliens and was played by Michael Biehn (Terminator). Bill Paxton played Hudson and that character died in Aliens.
“Mostly they come out at night…..Mostly” Newt. She talks

Doug Mahnke is definitely into weight lifting, he posts videos of him doing stuff on his IG.
Loved this. Thanks dudes.
How have I not been watching this? Glad I caught Aliens for my first dose. 👀 ❤️
There is a nice slightly oversized 30th anniversary edition out there for this story.

So upset that these were burned by my Gran. :(
Interesting, I have a first printing of these and the inner cover single panel art is different.
