Playboy sent out a few samples of Heavy Metal when it first came out to subscribers. That's how I discovered it, looking under my parents bed for my dad's Playboys. I was 15 then, and was a subscriber by issue 3.
26:49 that is an image used for a death metal album cover. The band name was Afterlife, and their album is Surreality. It's so cool to find comic images used in metal albums from time to time. Goes to show how many musicians are comic fans!
You might like to look at 'Epic Illustrated', Marvel's attempt at a Heavy Metal style classy illustrated mag, as Jim mentioned. The early issues are pretty interesting.
Thanks for showing these... I was 12 when I saw this, and Conquering armies was a big influence in my early artwork, a friend of mine collected these and then I started picking up issues a little later. A year later I started playing D&D and I was drawing a lot of stuff like that.
After you guys did the first issue I started going through my own collection. Aug '77 is the first one I have, so just a few more until I a can read along with the video, lol. I've still got a lot of holes in my collection, mind you, but then it's been years since I was actively pursuing the back issues. Decades, even, as I think I stopped when I stopped buying Heavy Metal regularly in the late 90s. Please keep going on these, though, as I can tell you there's some amazing stuff coming up! (some of those Druillet double page spreads alone...)
The movie came out when I was 9, I saw it when I was 16, but never actually saw the magazine until my early 20s. Awesome stuff. I remember Penthouse briefly had a comix magazine in my late 20s that was clearly inspired by Heavy Metal, though it was admittedly more heavy-handed with its content.
That Druillet/Rune comment was pretty much on the nail. The peculiar physiognomy of the early Smith Conan with the long face and exaggerated eyes is right out of Lone Sloane.
I'd like to ask the meaning of the word that's used at 45:12. It sounds like 'kayfabing', but I'm not sure, nor do I have any idea why this word would be used in this context. Does it have another meaning outside of the more general wrestling industry?
I'm pretty sure that thumbnail image was originally from Howling Metal and not Heavy Metal. Click on the video and now I need to do a good amount of research.
Do you think Moebius Ever sat down with Corben and exchanged ideas? And had a good laugh ? That Scene would make a great comic, talking about colors...please make it happen, guys
I never know if Heavy Metal still even exists anymore. It’s in a bizarre state of flux both pre and post-Grant Morrison, continually experiencing massive identity crises
By ‘77 I had started moving away from comic books and towards National Lampoon and Heavy Metal and it was a seismic shift. I didn’t know Corbin and Moebius but I was hooked!
Best channel ever.

Thanks for doing that!
I couldn’t help but open my own issue of heavy metal 2 and review it with you guys. Such an iconic issue.

I’d LOVE a hardcover collection of that

A cover illustration by Moebius which is a color variation of the first Metal Hurlant issue one.

Awesome, thanks for the consistent flow of vids and of course dope artwork from both u guys. Rock on 🤘🏾✌🏾
Don't know how many of those heavy metals you have but a Philippe Drulliettl block episode would be super duper cool.

That dvd for $20 of every HM magazine, kids....!
Picked up my copies of Hulk Grand Design yesterday and got the Piskor variant cover. Was super excited by that
Ed: You colored that barbarian chick in the front of your copy. It was printed B&W.
That Druillet/Rune comment was pretty much on the nail. The peculiar physiognomy of the early Smith Conan with the long face and exaggerated eyes is right out of Lone Sloane.
I think that collage stuff goes back to Max Ernst, with books like A Little Girl Dreams of Taking the Veil.
Who is that artist on 40:32 ??
PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE!!!!!!!
Thank You!

Agorn's Art is incredibly beautiful god damn.
I have hundreds of issues of Heavy metal, since the Number 2, con Vuzz the Druillet, al sol from the French original, Metal Hurlant,
I'm pretty sure that thumbnail image was originally from Howling Metal and not Heavy Metal. Click on the video and now I need to do a good amount of research.
I can confirm that the artwork in the short editorial piece is b&w in it's original form.
This was awesome.
Corben was legend
This whole Den story had been published in the first two volumes of Ariel before these HM issues came out.
Do you think Moebius Ever sat down with Corben and exchanged ideas? And had a good laugh ? That Scene would make a great comic, talking about colors...please make it happen, guys
Don't feel bad, Jim. Vaughan Bode has always been completely lost on me...
SICK!
I never know if Heavy Metal still even exists anymore. It’s in a bizarre state of flux both pre and post-Grant Morrison, continually experiencing massive identity crises
Hi, dudes are you aware of EL ETERNAUTA? That is an amazing comic that costed the author his life
Legends
That artwork for the cover was the original cover for Metal Hurlant #1.

Love it
It's a pleasure to draw listening to some new CK.
By ‘77 I had started moving away from comic books and towards National Lampoon and Heavy Metal and it was a seismic shift. I didn’t know Corbin and Moebius but I was hooked!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That Russian is pretty weird, you can get what the gist is but it’s not correct by any means. Likely author just used dictionary.
