How does a Door Handle work?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 чер 2024
- This video goes over the inside of a door handle that you would use in your house. Specific details will vary for different door handles. Parts covered in this video: handle, rosette, latch, latch assembly, and locking mechanism. The locking mechanism was simplified a lot. If you were to take a real one part you would find a lot more intricate parts.

I didn't think it'd be that complex, impressive. I like these :)
Thanks Hank - doing my best to keep it entertaining.
Honestly, I didn't either until I had to replace one for the first time. I was shocked to see how many individual moving parts were involved in such a seemingly simple device.
Same
This is actually one of the simplest models. Look up mortise lock. That is even more complex, mostly used in commercial settings. I know because I’m a Locksmith.
@@realkevintorres Fun thing is that in Europe (Or at least in France and Italy) doors inside of pretty much every home use...
mortise locks !
I think you are the first UA-camr who explains everything with great knowledge with finest animation.
😁
🐉🐉🐉🐉🐉🐉
Most other videos give the simplest reasons a door might not close. This really helps to understand why mine isn’t working.
Yes I agree I’m stranded with a non working latch I really appreciate this video!!!👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
Dude! How much time does an animation like this take :0??
This one took about 2 months - there was lots of research and I only have limited time in the evenings. This video was super fun to make so it's all worth it!
wow that's cool, BTW you answered on my birthday :)
VERY nice work! :)
You are an amazing person Jared! Thanks for teaching us all these stuff
@chu Harry Oh yeah yeah
Never have I seen such a useful video on such a simple subject
Thank you!
ikr
what a stunning presentation. I am so impressed by your animation work.
Thank You! :)
Ya!! MeMe♡ 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨andada
animations and explanations are precise and good..keep going for other such day-to-day simple working system which most of us don't know!
So much better than the last 5 videos I watched on locking mechanisms 5 stars helped me fix a busted door.
I can’t even begin to imagine how the development of this 3D video took place. Not my wheel house at all, but I recognize the mad skills! #awesome
I would have liked but that pun was to much to HANDLE
Kill me
*Too*
Lol
You can see your self to the door or he will show us how thats made too
*get out*
This was the video I didn’t know I needed. I’ve disassembled plenty of door handles, but now I know how and why everything happens! Keep it up! Amazing work! 10/10
Holy flip, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I'm not even kidding, I accidentally locked myself in a room with the door handles (and therefore also the spindle piece) taken out, because I thought the door would just open back up or something if I pulled on it.
I know shutting the door in the first place was probably a bit of a moronic move, but this video was ACTUALLY a legitimate lifesaver for me, because I seriously couldn't have gotten out, otherwise. You are absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for this!!
The earliest I remember wondering this was when i was 4 years old. It is a question that has plagued me for years and years (and I really wanted to take them apart but I thought "people won't be able to get through doors"). This video has instilled in me a sense of childlike joy
You make things so understandable and your narration is really appreciated.
Seeing the montrosity of the things inside the handle made me already give up on trying to understand, but once you assured me of showing one piece at a time and clearly showed their function and purpose individually, while gradually showing how the "chain reaction" works, it all made sense. Perfect!
I tried to fix my door lock once and I failed 😢 now I realized it’s actually very complicated inside . Very inspirational work! Thank you ❤
I swear...I just locked myself in my room after only installing the "latch" piece in the middle with no knobs and of course after closing the door to see if the "bevel" was facing the right way. This showed me how a door lock mechanism works so I learned how it must be manipulated with no knobs..

Thanks Jared guy.
It's fascinating that this design hasn't changed much in a long time. This helped me fix my broken bathroom doorknob, the springs weren't retaining as they should be, and shaft was warped, not bad for a 12 year old knob but it had to go.
Superb animation, well-done! I especially love that you named all the parts, as that it makes it easy for me to describe a problem to a support desk. Instead of, "Well the problem is in the cylindrical thingie that moves when the doodad is turned," I can correctly say, "the problem seems to be in the latch assembly because the cam drive units aren't moving smoothly, but the handles with the rosettes work fine." Thank you!
I have installed countless door knobs/handles in my adult life, but I learned a a lot from this video. Thanks...
I'm very impressed with this video. For someone who knows nothing about door handles, I know have some knowledge. I appreciate the time put into the animation and the down-to-earth explanation. Well done.
This is probably the most informative video ive seen on youtube. Thanks for this.
The animation in this video is amazing. I really needed to see how a door handle worked for a project I am working on and this was by far the best thing for comprehension. I am subscribing and hope to see more Mr. Owen. Good job and thank you!
Lots more animations coming your way - thank you!
The ammount of engineering that goes into such a trivial thing is quite humbling
You are teaching me things I never thought about knowing. The amount of time, skill and hard-work you commit is unbelievable
Thank you!
AMAZING WORK! Keep it coming, please.
Hey man
You are doing a great job by making these animations. Explanations and animations both are amazing.
Keep doing what you do. You do inspire many mechanical engineers!
Thank you
The world needs creators like you
This is the youtube channel that deserves to be subscribed. It has benefits in life.
What a professional job you've done. Very helpful too. Thank you so much.
Your video, animation, and explanations are so crisp and simple. Very well done, I look forward to watching your other videos as well.
Thank You! :)
Excellent explanation and animation!!! Thank you so much!!! :)
Thank you for your time and effort, Jared. Excellent video and tutorial.
I rarely comment or like any video but this One i couldn't resist myself commenting and liking. You deserve it. So much hard work done by you can be seen in this video
Thank you!
Excellent graphics and explanation - thank you.
good job this dserves more vews this helped me out alot
Hey, I am working in ironmongery industry for the past couple of months, Now you 've clarified a few of my doubts. U 've done a great job. Keep on updating videos like this.
Wow. That was amazing. So much information that we use every day without giving it a thought. Great narrator. Thank you 🙏
Jared, you are an artist at animation and also at explaining things. Much success to you in all of your endeavours !
Thanks Gary!
Amazing! I just learned so much.
I learn a lot from you
Incredibly well done - fantastic work!
My handle doesn't have a lock.
Actually, I don't have a handle.
Actually, I don't have a door.
Actually, I don't have a room.
I sleep on the couch.
same lmao
Michael Opnv: Hey look on the bright side, at least you OWN your couch! I live in a family home that’s been matrimonially disputed for close to 20 entire years and no resolution on the horizon. I’ve got probably the most diametrically opposed parents ever.
What did you say to your wife
a house without a door
LOLOLOOOL POOR NOOB LOLOL GET A JOB HIPPIE
I had this weird thought when I was trying to sleep a few weeks ago. I wondered how door handles worked. I tried thinking for myself how they work but couldn’t quite do it. I couldn’t let go of this thought, I thought about it everyday. I tried thinking of different ways it could work but I came up with none, I couldn’t wrap my head around the concept of a door handle. It drove me sick. I couldn’t sleep anymore. Whenever I closed my eyes, all I saw was a door handle. It taunted me. Taunted me for not knowing how it worked. It ruined my life. I couldn’t do anything anymore, not even the simplest of task. I was slowly going insane, and I knew it. Doors became an obstacle in my everyday life, I no longer even saw the doors, only the door handles. And they were taunting me. I couldn’t take it anymore. I was on the verge of a break down. That’s why I came here, to finally get the answer. To get the key back to my sane life. And I can tell you, it saved my life. It really did. I don’t know what I would have done if it wasn’t for this video.
I’m a recovering door handle addict, and this is my story.
Cringe
Sounds like one of those share my stories channels with bad animation
Same to me with other mechanisms
@@akivaweil5066 ok
You could’ve just looked it up :/
Just found this. Thanks so much for all your work, this is extremely high quality content.
what an amazing video. This couldn't be more clear; very impressive
Could you do a European door handle
My thoughts exactly.
What wrong?
It’s the same mechanic it’s just has a turning knob
No the lock is so much different in EU doors
The old versions with handles have a very different lock
The new knob versions work the same way as American doors
This was so helpful. My door handle broke in a weird way this morning and I'm trying to fix it. This helped give me an idea of the problem.
P. Isley did you fix it?
Was the problem fixed? We need to know
you deserve a lot of praise...great job.
I can see so much effort put into these videos
Deserves more likes
That pun was amazing
The Lock Picking Lawyer: interesting!
Can't tell u how much I really appreciate these. Thank u will all my heart dude for taking the time out of ur life to learn, animate and teach such valuable info. Thank u so much.
Wow! What a brilliant way to explain something that we use in our houses hundreds, if not thousands of times a day, but quite likely don't have a clue as to how that "thing" works. Thank you.
I haven't seen handles like that. In Northern Europe at least we have tall replaceable handle mechanisms which hold the springs inside them. Would love to see a video on these.
Great video, detailed explanation, and nice animation.
But, what about spherical handle that have a push button lock? Is the lock has the same mechanism?
Thank you
This is the best animation I've seen because you so clearly show and explain how it works. Thank you!
Glad I found this channel.
Thank you for the easy to understand animation & clear descriptions.
I couldt HANDEL it my self😂 thanks
Thanks - I love the corny jokes. I hope that's okay!
Lol
i’m seeing if door knobs have any wheels in them
Your videos are so simple and understanding. Thanks.
Impressed.
Thank you.
I can do some home repairs, I can build shit, but changing a lock and door knob is the Bain of my existence
spelling is, too
Those door locks suck. All it takes is a long fingernail and putting it into that outer lock area. Bam. Door unlocked
I had one of those locks on my bathroom door, and my siblings always unlocked the door when I was taking a poop
joseph jackson I have short finger nails and I can still unlock locked doors in my house
My locks are just small holes and if you stick andything small and skinny in them it unlocks so we would get skewers and burst into others rooms
They’re done on purpose like this, in case of emergency you can still enter inside
All of our house doors have keys exept the bathroom ones they have that lock where everyone bursts in
I see them pretty often in public bathrooms. I can just press my finger into it hard enough and move it around in a circle, and the latch turns too.
Your hard work makes us understand easily.
Really good animations.
This is so oddly satisfying!! I love it!!❤️
I got to see this first hand yesterday when all the Handels in my house were removed
It's 'handles' not 'handels' btw
door lore
This is the best way to learn and understand how things work
Fantastic video!! Thanks a lot for this.

Great animation and incredibly informative. Jared you are amazing.
Excellent job! I am a fan of your videos man! Every student that studies mechanics should watch your works!
Sad that all of that technology can usually be defeated with a pen knife or credit card.
You are answering some of my biggest childhood questions... THANK YOU!!!!!
It makes me laugh to see "thumbs down" and negative comments on such excellent work. These are great examples of why we should not take negativity personally.
Phenomenal work, @Jared Owen. Thank you for your time and efforts.

thanks this was very helpful, you save me today
What a great explanation. Gonna watch it again and again until I remember all those parts and how they operate. Thanks.
You nailed it. Right on my Birthday :)
Incredibly well done! Subscribed!!
your explanation is amazing
Great explanation of the mechanism! thank you!
Best animated explanation of anything!
Wonderful video. Well crafted and explained. Helped me to 'see into' and understand a situation I had with my door: the connection between the transmission plate and the latch was broken, with the spring keeping the latch pushed out and the door 'locked'. Then, I just had to figure a way to push the latch back in to open the door. Now, to get a new assembly. Thanks!
Wow! What a great video! Great job all the way around.
This helped me fix my door handle. Thanks so much.
I never knew door handles were so interesting!
That's actually really interesting. Something which we use everyday and take for granted.
Your voice is calming.
Really well done! Thanks for putting this together, it helped me a great deal.
Thank you very much. I just fixed my jammed door because of your video. 😊
This is a great animation 👍🏻 thank you!
Wow,what a technology behind the door lock,I can't believe
This was awesome! The explanation was thorough, diagrams were clear. My 5 year old and I learned together.
OMG are you a wonderful teacher. Thanks
Thank you Sally!
This guy has top notch animations and video production! Damn this needs more views and likes!
Thanks! Feel free to share with friends :)
Great work, thanks Jared!
