I love all 3, but I'm one of those weirdos who likes Temple the best, I love how balls out crazy it is, I love that there is a dude who rips peoples' hearts out while they're still alive and dunks them in lava, I love Short Round. It is schlocky as hell, but it also feels closer to the original pulp adventure source material, and you get to see the moment when Indy stops being a total mercenary and starts being a hero. But still, your review is great.
Even though I prefer Raiders and Crusade to Temple, I absolutely can see where you're coming from. I was 12 when The Last Crusade came out and I watched it on video disc from the ‘80s. It was my favorite by far back then. It’s great to see someone who shares my sentiments on UA-cam these days. I disagree on Elsa's humanity being pointless because I think she serves to highlight that it doesn't matter if you personally disavow evil ideologies if you're supporting the systems keeping them in place. If you help the Nazis, you'll meet the same fate as them
I agree with this interpretation but I think as a character, Elsa needed to be fleshed put for that to land with me at the end. You're right, thematically it makes sense but for the character she just comes off as wishy washy. Thanks for the comment!
Great review, buddy. I go back and forth on Raiders and Crusade for #1. It used to be Crusade, then for many years it was Raiders, and for the last couple years I've gravitated been to Crusade.

14:00 Elsa was not a weakness though. Meeting Indy began to shake her faith in the Nazi party & Indy still cared for her even though she betrayed him. She’s bad but she’s not evil. That’s one of the best scenes of the movie. If you’ve ever shared love with a woman you’d get it.
I think Elsa was a good character all the way through the Austrian castle. I agree with your interpretation of her maybe softening because she met Indy but for that part to work for me, I wanted them to flesh her out. But they didnt, she just went from evil to crying in a flash. I dont really agree that Indy loved her...i think he was attracted to her and slept with her and probably had feelings for her but love is probably a strong word for someone he spent like 2 days with. But I do agree that he had enough feelings for her that he would try to save her. I just think that if they fleshed her out more, it would have meant more for me. Thanks for watching and the comment!
well duuuh it's the best, it got Sean "the OG Giga Chad" Connery in it, and it's the absolute perfect ending to the TRILOGY of indie movies. that being said, the other two are also awesome and i recommand everyone watch the 3 movies in orders so they only get better and better.

I also have a conundrum with Raiders and Last Crusade. Every film has a pattern in the way that things happen; 1. The film usually starts with an adventure that has little to do with the rest of the film, 2. Indy teaches 3. Adventure begins with a red line on the map 4. Shenanigans 5. Ultimate confrontation for the treasure with villain. 6. Said villain gets killed as a result from the treasure 7. All is well, Raiders theme plays. No matter what film you watch, and despite how you may feel for some of them, this list of 7 things always happens. Nothing wrong with a repeat formula, but it works in a way that it does for a few other franchises. Raiders had this shocking ending that worked because the entire film had been playing it safe with the action, save for a splatter of blood on the plane. But then it hits you with laser beams, ghosts, and bodies dissolving. No other film in the franchise gave me a shocking ending until Dial of Destiny when everyone went back way farther in time than they wanted to. Last Crusade had the closest relationship Indy could ever have in an adventure companion; his own dad. I think the way I can describe How I can never choose between Raiders or Crusaders is akin to choosing Asylum and Knight in the Batman Arkham games. Asylum was the classic that grabbed your attention, and Arkham Knight brought it into full circle.
Thats a pretty good comparison to the Arkham series though for me, in both I prefer the original. Crusade has more emotion but it feels slightly less impactful to me than Raiders in which the action and adventure felt more visceral. Agree that these movies rarely have shocking endings but I feel like I was too young to be shocked by Raiders ending. All my memories of movies as a kid are "wow that was awesome!" Love both films! Last Crusade was one of the first movies I watched in the cinema, so it will always have a special place in my heart and mind. And I also think the 3rd act is stronger in LC, so I give it the edge a little bit :)

I've said for a long time that, raiders of the lost ark is the greatest action/adventure movie of all time... Yet, somehow, last crusade is better... How this phenomenon is possible, I do not know... But I know it to be true...
So I still think Raiders is better but I think Crusade is probably just more fun. Theres more character dynamics at play and I find the last 20 min of Crusade superior to the end of Raiders (everything after the romance scene until the face melting scene feels a bit less interesting). Temple of Doom is so much fun but tonally feels like a different genre. This weird mix of super dark stuff with screwball comedy. I love it but its definitely an odd one.
Hahaha I might get some hate for what I'm about to say. I despised Crystal Skull for the longest time and i still think thr last hour of that movie is utter garbage. But I think the first half is actually enjoyable. Now Dial of Destiny....that DOES not feel like an Indy movie

@daveglo100 yeah I dont think the gameplay looks so hot but the vibes I get from the story trailers and Troy Bakers Harrison Ford impression are selling me. Its a game that I would suffer through gameplay issues just to experience the story.
While I love the trilogy, and even the 4th film to some extent, over time I think The Last Crusade might my favorite, like I remember watching Indy marathons and this was the one I enjoyed the most, everything comes together in this film, I think it adds a lot to develop Indy's character more than in the other films, starting with the prologue with River Phoenix. Also, the spiritual elements in this film is what makes it up for me, even when I was still a catholic, "that's the cup of a carpenter" really gave me chills, because I would believe the Cup of Christ to be simple without all the gold.
@@jesustovar2549 thats really cool about how that ending works on a more spiritual level. Makes me appreciate how movies mean different things for different people. I love what they do with Indy's character development in Crusade but its all in terms of his relationship with his dad. Connery is amazing but I think Indy himself is slightly less interesting than he was in Raiders and Temple for me. I cant explain it very well (hence why it wasnt in the video) but I thought Raiders, Temple, and even Crystal Skull found ways to film Harrison Ford and frame him in these perfect "hero" shots that made him seem larger than life. I think Crusade kinda forgets that aspect at times and it makes Indy feel more like a regular dude.
Short answer: Yes Long answer: Absolutely Capped off a great Trilogy... that's all it will ever be cinematically... 3 movies... the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles also count as do the Comics...😊

I don't think we can definitively say which film is better between Raiders and Crusade, as it really comes down to personal preference more than anything. With that being said, I prefer Crusade.
I think I agree with your rankings when I'm thinking which Indy movie is most fun. But I think I'm more wowed by the craft in Raiders because I think Doom has a weak middle and Crusade feels a bit too similar to Raiders. Thanks for the comment!
@@PointlessRewind-PR I prefer the artifact in Crusade and the third act. The tank is more enjoyable than the truck. The "he chose poorly" moment is more iconic than the melting face. Sean Connery puts it over the edge. McDonald's gave out copies of Indy movies when I was a. kid. Bummed me out when I got Temple. Crazy to think they would give that movie to a 6-year-old! Spielberg trashes the movie now which hurt its legacy. The Retroblasting channel has my favorite analysis of the Indy films.
Yeah I agree about the trail and the third act. I do prefer the facemelt to Donovans death but I prrefer the 3 tests over the climax in Raiders. But I'm not a big fan on the tank scene and while I love Indy in TLC and think theres more depth to his character than in Raiders, theres something intangible about Harrison Ford's performance in the first movie that i prefer.
Raiders is the more technically superior film but Last Crusade has a more solid emotional core. It's funnier when it tries to be, the Nazis are more menacing and the father son relationship works much better than the romance in Raiders.
Yeah that's basically how I feel about it, though I think Crusade takes a bit too long to get to that emotional core. The first 45 minutes are good but feel a tiny bit empty which is a big reason why I like Raiders more.

The Last Crusade is my favorite. Probably because it was the only one i saw in the theater. I was two, when the first movie came out. I saw, Temple Of Doom, a bunch of times from a TV recording on VHS.
It was a great video! I have to respectfully disagree on the lazy / safe direction they went with it. It's "sister movie" would be Die hard 3, with how everything was pretty much resolved with no plotholes at the end. The 90s was one heck of an era for Hollywood - that said, you can tell that it has this aesthetic when at the time this came out, with the technology of its time and the culture that everyone was going though - It wouldn't be considered to be lazy nor safe. That's all brother! 😀
Always happy to disagree, I think it leads to the best discussions! I'm ok with how Crusade ends with everything wrapped up, I think the feeling of it being safe and lazy comes with how similar it is to Raiders. With Die Hard 3, I actually think they took a big swing because its a substantially different movie from the first two! The final 20 minutes though are pretty disappointing for me because I feel like that movie's novelty runs out of steam. And my complaints are admittedly nitpicky, I just love to overanalyze my favorite movies from my childhood. Glad you brought up Die Hard because its a series I plan on tackling soon!

I Consider It A Solid Conclusion For A Trilogy For Harrison. Indiana Should Have Been Treated Like Bond...., New Lead, New Stories & So On....But We Got Aged Indiana.... & That's Not Bad Per Say But We Want A Timeless Hero In His Times.
I sorta agree. I dont think Crystal Skull is a good movie but i think Harrison Ford is great as the character even at 66. Its in Dial of Destiny where I felt his age made it almost uncomfortable to watch the character.

I found Connery a bit annoying in this movie, but even that and everything else was a step up from Willie's endless shouting and the excesses of Doom. Nevertheless, I probably would choose Crystal Skull over this one - but that might be based on expectations: I had higher expectations for Crusade and the addition of 007, and low expectations for Skull based on the horrendous reviews. While I love Connery here, I can see why some might find him annoying but wanted to ask what specifically you didnt like? Ive started to warm up to Crystal Skull. I hated it when it came out for certain very specific things but now I realize those specific things were preventing me from enjoying a fun movie! Also part if the magic of the original trilogy is I would watch and rewatch them so much that I memorized everything. I would go years between rewatching Crystal Skull so in the last few months, ive tried to watch it multiple times to get more familiar with it and that helps the movie as well. Thanks for watching!
@PointlessRewind-PR Connery! Obviously his performance here was what the script called for, and I've liked him elsewhere (check out Outland if you haven't seen it, I'm not sure why it's less known). In this case, I think that I found the father-son dynamic annoying. Interestingly, I just read that Spielberg was working out his own unresolved issues with his father with this movie. Good on him, but I don't know that a psychotherapy undertone works for me with an Indy movie - that's more for indie films 😀. Nevertheless, it's been a decade or three since I've seen this one, so it definitely warrants a revisit!
Yeah thats interesting because the father son interactions are something I enjoy in this movie but when I was younger I just saw it as just jokey banter. I think the movie wisely doesnt make it too heavy or important. When you were anticipating Bond being in TLC, were you hoping Indy's dad was more action-centric? I never thought about that but that could have been interesting! And oNe thing I liked about Crystal Skull is how it switches the dynamic around with Indy and Mutt....at least for the first half of the movie. The second half is too many "wink wink" lines referencing TLC.
Did you just claim that Last Crusade is the most action packed one in the series???? Raider's and Temple of Doom surpass Last Crusade by a galaxy when it comes to the set pieces and action. Everyone says how great the tank chase scene is, and it's alright, but the truck chase in Raider's or the minecart chase in Doom are way more intense and have the grit that Last Crusade lacks. Last Crusade undercuts every single violent action with a joke. Raider's and Doom have humor, but it's more subtle. To me Raider's is a perfect film, the slower ending is justified after having set pieces (Escape from the well of souls, flying wing fight with the giant mechanic and the truck chase). Temple of Doom has the bridge cutting scene which is one of the most iconic Indiana Jones scenes in my opinion. I will grant you that the Holy Grail is probably the best relic from the trilogy. I do enjoy Last Crusade as a fun movie, but to me it's actually the weakest in terms of action and set pieces from the original trilogy. I don't want nor care about Indy as a character. I just want generic action hero to go on adventures.

Last Crusade has "more" individual action set pieces than Raiders or Temple which is what I mean by action-packed but I think they are a bit stale. I’ve never been big on Last Crusade. The film takes just a little too much from Raiders but becomes even more preachy, even if Sean Connery is good in it. I don’t think Donovan has much depth to him ultimately, and he doesn’t stand out as much. Im also very tired of everyone saying the franchise must automatically end with the cheesy sunset shot, mainly because I actually liked Crystal Skull more for trying unique ideas.
@@joshslater2426 man Donovan is so half baked its almost comical. And I mostly agree though which parts did you find preachy? I also have a soft spot for Crystal Skull (though I think it has some damn near fatal flaws) and am going in depth on it for my next video to release in a week or 2.
Crystal Skull made me want to walk out of the theater (I still regret not doing so). I found nothing redeemable about that movie. Last Crusade is absolutely my favorite, though. The dynamic between Ford and Connery was magic in a bottle.
Raiders is my favorite, followed by Crusade. Temple's batshit crazyness though makes it the most fun though. And I used to hate Crystal Skull but now I enjoy the first hour. The second hour is trash.

Ford seems like he doesn't even want to be there, the action sequences are dull, John Williams score is boring as heck, the dialogue is awful ("Giddy as a schoolboy, really?), the humor is beyond juvenile (there are literally Mickey Mouse jokes in it), the prologue was beyond contrived, but I could give all that a pass if it wasn't so boring.

No, it's not. It has a sour ending with Indy on the steps not knowing where the artifact is located and the warehouse scene is just "meh". Our heroes in that movie simply do.... NOTHING at the crescendo of the film while being tied up on a poll while all the villains just get wrecked. Last Crusade has a "complete" story and ending. A "feel good" absolute send off that the first film does not deliver on. Further, the first film has some pacing issues. I'm going to assume you're a GEN X or BOOMER in alignment with your sentiment because that being your first time seeing Indiana.
I think Raiders is much better despite Crusade having a stronger 3rd act. With that said I dont see why Raiders "sour" ending is bad. In terms of final shots I much prefer the warehouse over the slightly over sentimental "riding off into the sunset" shot.
@ it’s bad. The fact that Marcus and Indy are upset for not being told of the location of the Ark is just a farce. The movie is so good and just wanes after they “survive” on the pole. Even as a kid, I was like “really?!”.
@Jerry11011 that stuff never specifically bothered me, as someone who has worked for the federal government, Marcus and Indy being pissed at government bureaucracy and shenanigans felt relatable. What always bothered me about Raiders is how the movie loses steam after the truck scene. The love scene feels like its gonna be the break between two major setpieces....but everything after the love scene feels a bit underwhelming for me until we get back to DC.

Raiders didn't have everything. Ending was "meh" with Indiana not knowing the location of the artifact at the conclusion of everything they went through.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is the best Indy film without a shadow of a doubt. Temple is 2nd and Crusade is last which isn't a bad thing for one of the greatest films ever made. People that pose the question that Crusade is the best film in the trilogy are simple attention seekers that didn't live thru the 1980s.

So I still think Raiders is better but I think Crusade is probably just more fun. Theres more character dynamics at play and I find the last 20 min of Crusade superior to the end of Raiders (everything after the romance scene until the face melting scene feels a bit less interesting).

Temple of Doom is so much fun but tonally feels like a different genre. This weird mix of super dark stuff with screwball comedy. I love it but its definitely an odd one.

Hahaha I might get some hate for what I'm about to say. I despised Crystal Skull for the longest time and i still think thr last hour of that movie is utter garbage. But I think the first half is actually enjoyable.

I have Raiders, Crusade, Temple, Skull, Dual. But I think for my enjoyment, Crusade and Temple are basically tied.
While I love the trilogy, and even the 4th film to some extent, over time I think The Last Crusade might my favorite, like I remember watching Indy marathons and this was the one I enjoyed the most, everything comes together in this film, I think it adds a lot to develop Indy's character more than in the other films, starting with the prologue with River Phoenix.
Also, the spiritual elements in this film is what makes it up for me, even when I was still a catholic, "that's the cup of a carpenter" really gave me chills, because I would believe the Cup of Christ to be simple without all the gold.

I love what they do with Indy's character development in Crusade but its all in terms of his relationship with his dad. Connery is amazing but I think Indy himself is slightly less interesting than he was in Raiders and Temple for me. I cant explain it very well (hence why it wasnt in the video) but I thought Raiders, Temple, and even Crystal Skull found ways to film Harrison Ford and frame him in these perfect "hero" shots that made him seem larger than life. I think Crusade kinda forgets that aspect at times and it makes Indy feel more like a regular dude.

That's a good point about the atmosphere. I'm not a huge fan of the prologue but I think it sets that vibe up very well. Plus the quest for the grail itself just feels more fleshed out.

I don't think we can definitively say which film is better between Raiders and Crusade, as it really comes down to personal preference more than anything. With that being said, I prefer Crusade.

The Last Crusade is a better viewing experience. Raiders is a more “perfect” movie - less ups & downs. My ranking is Crusade > Doom > Raiders.
I think I agree with your rankings when I'm thinking which Indy movie is most fun. But I think I'm more wowed by the craft in Raiders because I think Doom has a weak middle and Crusade feels a bit too similar to Raiders.

@@PointlessRewind-PR I prefer the artifact in Crusade and the third act. The tank is more enjoyable than the truck. The "he chose poorly" moment is more iconic than the melting face. Sean Connery puts it over the edge. McDonald's gave out copies of Indy movies when I was a. kid. Bummed me out when I got Temple. Crazy to think they would give that movie to a 6-year-old! Spielberg trashes the movie now which hurt its legacy.
The Retroblasting channel has my favorite analysis of the Indy films.
Yeah I agree about the trail and the third act. I do prefer the facemelt to Donovans death but I prrefer the 3 tests over the climax in Raiders. But I'm not a big fan on the tank scene and while I love Indy in TLC and think theres more depth to his character than in Raiders, theres something intangible about Harrison Ford's performance in the first movie that i prefer.

😃 Yep...that is how the movie has always felt to me. Not a bad thing but a step below.
Raiders is the more technically superior film but Last Crusade has a more solid emotional core. It's funnier when it tries to be, the Nazis are more menacing and the father son relationship works much better than the romance in Raiders.
Yeah that's basically how I feel about it, though I think Crusade takes a bit too long to get to that emotional core. The first 45 minutes are good but feel a tiny bit empty which is a big reason why I like Raiders more.

It was a great video! I have to respectfully disagree on the lazy / safe direction they went with it. It's "sister movie" would be Die hard 3, with how everything was pretty much resolved with no plotholes at the end. The 90s was one heck of an era for Hollywood - that said, you can tell that it has this aesthetic when at the time this came out, with the technology of its time and the culture that everyone was going though - It wouldn't be considered to be lazy nor safe. That's all brother! 😀
Always happy to disagree, I think it leads to the best discussions! I'm ok with how Crusade ends with everything wrapped up, I think the feeling of it being safe and lazy comes with how similar it is to Raiders.
With Die Hard 3, I actually think they took a big swing because its a substantially different movie from the first two! The final 20 minutes though are pretty disappointing for me because I feel like that movie's novelty runs out of steam.
And my complaints are admittedly nitpicky, I just love to overanalyze my favorite movies from my childhood. Glad you brought up Die Hard because its a series I plan on tackling soon!

I sorta agree. I dont think Crystal Skull is a good movie but i think Harrison Ford is great as the character even at 66. Its in Dial of Destiny where I felt his age made it almost uncomfortable to watch the character.
TLC was a watered down version of Raiders. Temple of doom was the best by far.

You would agree with Tarantino's take on TLC. There's a video essay from Film Speak about why Temple of Doom is the best.
I found Connery a bit annoying in this movie, but even that and everything else was a step up from Willie's endless shouting and the excesses of Doom.
Nevertheless, I probably would choose Crystal Skull over this one - but that might be based on expectations: I had higher expectations for Crusade and the addition of 007, and low expectations for Skull based on the horrendous reviews.

Ive started to warm up to Crystal Skull. I hated it when it came out for certain very specific things but now I realize those specific things were preventing me from enjoying a fun movie!
Also part if the magic of the original trilogy is I would watch and rewatch them so much that I memorized everything. I would go years between rewatching Crystal Skull so in the last few months, ive tried to watch it multiple times to get more familiar with it and that helps the movie as well.

@PointlessRewind-PR Connery! Obviously his performance here was what the script called for, and I've liked him elsewhere (check out Outland if you haven't seen it, I'm not sure why it's less known). In this case, I think that I found the father-son dynamic annoying. Interestingly, I just read that Spielberg was working out his own unresolved issues with his father with this movie. Good on him, but I don't know that a psychotherapy undertone works for me with an Indy movie - that's more for indie films 😀.
Nevertheless, it's been a decade or three since I've seen this one, so it definitely warrants a revisit!
Yeah thats interesting because the father son interactions are something I enjoy in this movie but when I was younger I just saw it as just jokey banter. I think the movie wisely doesnt make it too heavy or important.
When you were anticipating Bond being in TLC, were you hoping Indy's dad was more action-centric? I never thought about that but that could have been interesting!
And oNe thing I liked about Crystal Skull is how it switches the dynamic around with Indy and Mutt....at least for the first half of the movie. The second half is too many "wink wink" lines referencing TLC.
Did you just claim that Last Crusade is the most action packed one in the series???? Raider's and Temple of Doom surpass Last Crusade by a galaxy when it comes to the set pieces and action. Everyone says how great the tank chase scene is, and it's alright, but the truck chase in Raider's or the minecart chase in Doom are way more intense and have the grit that Last Crusade lacks. Last Crusade undercuts every single violent action with a joke. Raider's and Doom have humor, but it's more subtle. To me Raider's is a perfect film, the slower ending is justified after having set pieces (Escape from the well of souls, flying wing fight with the giant mechanic and the truck chase). Temple of Doom has the bridge cutting scene which is one of the most iconic Indiana Jones scenes in my opinion. I will grant you that the Holy Grail is probably the best relic from the trilogy. I do enjoy Last Crusade as a fun movie, but to me it's actually the weakest in terms of action and set pieces from the original trilogy. I don't want nor care about Indy as a character. I just want generic action hero to go on adventures.

Last Crusade has "more" individual action set pieces than Raiders or Temple which is what I mean by action-packed but I think they are a bit stale. The tank chase is good but isnt close to the truck scene or the minecart chase which i mention in the video.
And also my final conclusion is that Raiders is the better movie...i find Last Crusade slightly hollowm

Raiders was a classic with very serious moments mixed in with limited comedy in the right spots…….unlike Crusades. Also, as it was shown in Raiders……God isn’t anyone’s servant….much less Nazis😂
Yeah i think Raiders had the right amount of humor. Crusade has some excellent humor when it stays character based but it becomes a farce when it comes to Marcus Brody.

I’ve never been big on Last Crusade. The film takes just a little too much from Raiders but becomes even more preachy, even if Sean Connery is good in it. I don’t think Donovan has much depth to him ultimately, and he doesn’t stand out as much. Im also very tired of everyone saying the franchise must automatically end with the cheesy sunset shot, mainly because I actually liked Crystal Skull more for trying unique ideas.

Crystal Skull made me want to walk out of the theater (I still regret not doing so). I found nothing redeemable about that movie.
Last Crusade is absolutely my favorite, though. The dynamic between Ford and Connery was magic in a bottle.

Ford seems like he doesn't even want to be there, the action sequences are dull, John Williams score is boring as heck, the dialogue is awful ("Giddy as a schoolboy, really?), the humor is beyond juvenile (there are literally Mickey Mouse jokes in it), the prologue was beyond contrived, but I could give all that a pass if it wasn't so boring.

No, it's not. It has a sour ending with Indy on the steps not knowing where the artifact is located and the warehouse scene is just "meh". Our heroes in that movie simply do.... NOTHING at the crescendo of the film while being tied up on a poll while all the villains just get wrecked. Last Crusade has a "complete" story and ending. A "feel good" absolute send off that the first film does not deliver on. Further, the first film has some pacing issues. I'm going to assume you're a GEN X or BOOMER in alignment with your sentiment because that being your first time seeing Indiana.
I think Raiders is much better despite Crusade having a stronger 3rd act. With that said I dont see why Raiders "sour" ending is bad. In terms of final shots I much prefer the warehouse over the slightly over sentimental "riding off into the sunset" shot.
@ it’s bad. The fact that Marcus and Indy are upset for not being told of the location of the Ark is just a farce. The movie is so good and just wanes after they “survive” on the pole. Even as a kid, I was like “really?!”.
@Jerry11011 that stuff never specifically bothered me, as someone who has worked for the federal government, Marcus and Indy being pissed at government bureaucracy and shenanigans felt relatable.
What always bothered me about Raiders is how the movie loses steam after the truck scene. The love scene feels like its gonna be the break between two major setpieces....but everything after the love scene feels a bit underwhelming for me until we get back to DC.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is the best Indy film without a shadow of a doubt. Temple is 2nd and Crusade is last which isn't a bad thing for one of the greatest films ever made. People that pose the question that Crusade is the best film in the trilogy are simple attention seekers that didn't live thru the 1980s.
I agree that Raiders is better, but my best friend, my dad, and my wife all like Crusade more. I think its a legit view for that movie to be considered better.
