  • In this video, we are unboxing blueberry bushes from True Vine Ranch and planting them in pots. The varieties being planted today are Reka and Bluecrop. I am planting them in a mix of peat moss, garden soil, potting, soil, Pine Bark Mulch, and adding a little acidic fertilizer. Thanks for watching!

Here is a thought, put saucers under neat the pots this will lesson the need for constant watering in the summer time . I would recommend using MUCH larger pots if you are trying to get a decent harvest and large berries . Lastly , keep in mind that when planting blueberry in pots its a constant battle to keep the pH in the right zone so in my case for my potted blueberries I periodically add sulfur and water with ammonium sulfate solution. As the plants get bigger and start to produce fruit calcium will need to be added to help with fruit production . I find that blueberries are quite a labor intensive plant to " properly " care for but is also fun and rewarding . All the best with your blueberries plants , thank you for sharing .

Thanks for this video. I bought accompanying plants, but I didn't know what sized pots to buy. Your instructions are easy to follow.

Here are some added technique that I use .
    (1) You will need get a bag of AMMONIUM SULFATE ( Not Aluminum Sulfate ) . This Ammonium Sulfate will also acidify the soil and provide the blue berry bushes the right type of " Urea Nitrogen " that is needed to let the plants flourish. I also use Liquid Fish Fertilizer for a quick feeding + alfalfa meal to add organic matter to the soil .
    (2) Buy a cheap pH tester on Amazon , these are not 100% accurate as the labs are but it definitely helps to keep you in the right ball park in terms of pH levels .
    (3) Do remember the Ammonium Sulfate this is one of the silver bullets to a bumper harvest because blueberries loves the nitrogen and sulfur it provides, but please use the Ammonium sulfate very sparingly its best to use too little than to use too much as its quite concentrated.
    (4) Add organic matter such as chicken or rabbit manure . (
    (5) My soil mix is 15% Micro Pine Bark , 5% Perlite , 10% Worm Castings, 30% Store bought bagged Acid soil , 30% Peat Moss , 10% Alfalfa Meal ( For Organic matter ) . I also add chicken manure and a couple scoops of elemental sulfur dependent on the batch size .
I am very much still experimenting with the soil mix but all the variations of the mix seems to be just fine and my plants are producing quite well , keep an eye on the pH though because in pots the pH can change drastically over a couple months especially if you are using pipe / city water to water the plants .

I am a new subscriber and new to gardening. My husband and I are now retired and have purchased a Rion brand hobby greenhouse 8' x 12' and are starting some peppers and tomatoes in it. Next year we also plan on doing some outdoor container gardening . We are trying to learn all we can about the different plants and vegetables for our area. We are in Alabama zone7. What state and zone are you in. I never knew there was so many vegetables that would work in container. Look forward to trying watermelons.

Aww thank you so much! My youngest son has been doing remote learning/homeschooling this year so I have been busy. I have not been making as many videos as I would like, but am working on a few right now. Good luck with your blueberries!

I didn't moisen my bushes with any acidic substance so my blueberry bushes are just standing. Last year I had a stroke so I couldn't garden:-( I am going to raise (3) watermelon plants as I know you did. I can't find my seeds so i ordered Siam Queen Thai Basil, Playtime Calendula, Wilson, Blacktail Mountain, and Royal Golden watermelon seeds.

Get another one if you can, they produce better if they have a pollinator plant friend. Choose a different variety than the one you already have. Good luck!
