Hi I'm planning in growing them in container and I wonder, can I mixed sulfur in a potting mix and how much can I use for a 5 galon pot?
I know you only have a few plants but watch this video about a blueberry farm in Oregon. I talked to Bob a few days ago and he is thrilled with his production, no insects and no disease.ua-cam.com/video/wFEIeTn-NhA/v-deo.html
What! Three for $21!! Last week, I saw them at Loews for $40 each. I did pick up a “Misty” from the bargain rack for $12. Your three bushes look really nice.
Yeah now is the time to look around and find deals. If I find good prices, Ill buy more

Thanks for the video. Probably the best informative video I have found yet on growing Blueberries.
Glad to help.

How is your blueberries doing after planting them in 2017. I’m wanting to try planting a couple plants this year. Never have tried blueberries or blackberries before. Thanks for the video
I would love to know as well!
They’re probably struggling to survive.
Thanks, Gary! This was a very timely video for me as I am getting ready to plant two new varieties as well as attempting to move a couple of plants that have grown at the base of 30 year old shrubs that have died (probably due to shade from neighbor's trees- or maybe old age :)
They do age out. Good luck.
White vinegar, sulphur powder, used coffee grounds all help lower the pH of the soil along with using ericaceous compost and pine bark mulch.
Thanks!

I would really appreciate a revised video that compiles the things that Gary said he learned in the comment section in relation to growing blueberries, because I think there is some stuff in this video that could be improved (in terms of advice and accessibility).
Some people were saying he was providing info that can be inaccurate and misleading... I'm just trying to get all the perspectives.
I'm trying to plant a new blueberry plant for the first time, so Iearning that there is some conflict with the information is concerning, and together it all makes learning even more overwhelming. I like Gary's channel, but I also want to make sure I'm getting the right info.
Also, the background noise is definitely a distraction from the content of this video, as some people pointed out. I don't know if this is a problem in every video but I think there are probably editing tools for that.
Very fine instructions. I always look for this early in Nov. in Australia and do enjoy it pick Y Own! Will try to plant some myself and I am just under the snow line near Melbourne. It is a beautiful past time and brings X-mas ahead of time!

we grow them in big whiskey barrels, we are keeping them dwarfed.
What kind of yields do you get?
they are just a year old, we got a couple bowls full but we expect quite a bit more next season.
You started with one year old plants?
we planted them last year, they were small about the size Gary is planting.

Thanks Gary!
Thanks for the blueberry tips. I planted blueberries about 6 years ago (zone 6b neutral soil) and 2-3 varities for this area PNW in E. Wa. I added sulfur like directions indicated and they either died or didn't do anything for a few years until I quit adding sulfur and last 2 years have been getting good crops. I always add peat moss as our soil is from old river silt (hard like clay when dry) so it must have dropped the PH too low for a few years. I haven't been fertilizing them enough either as all I have is dry fert and only added that at planting time or in early spring so I need to get some liquid fert also. Hoping for a larger crop next year!
I hope these get established nicely.
Always information I need

Would wood ash help with the pH ? I'm also wondering if you need different varieties that blossom at the same time or not. There is early, mid and late producing plants but if there not blossoming at the same time ?
You need a variety of plants for pollination. The berries get bigger this way. Would ash can help, yes.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Wood ash is alkaline, no?
Hello! I have a question about the 2 varieties for cross pollination. I will also be planting blackberries, raspberries, and goji berries in the same vicinity (I don’t have a lot of area to work with). Would that be enough variety to cross pollinate and get plumper blueberries like you were talking about in the video? Sorry if this is a dumb question! I’m very new to gardening!
They say 2 work just fine. I typically use 2 and things have been good. I have added more now that I moved. Not dumb.. ask away.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) great! Thanks! So even though they are different types of berries, they will still have an effect on the blueberries? (I only have one variety of blueberry)
awesome! no, get two different blueberry varieties and you will get bigger and more berries, guaranteed! other berries will not cross pollinate.
I guess the different varieties would need to bloom at the same time, or do blueberries generally bloom at the same time anyway?
No you do have early middle and later. But I think flowering over laps quite a bit.

Oh boy. I may have killed mine. I bought some from Lowes as well. Knew nothing about blueberries which was my first problem. Hey Gary I picked up some that miracle grow for azaleas and noticed the nitrogen is high, 30-10-10. Is it ok to continue giving high nitrogen each month or will it just result in more leaves than fruit? Thanks!
Really depends on your soil. I think it is fine for the first round of feedings or 2. You dont really need it monthly after that. If so, I would cut it to 1/2.

Hi!! Is your garden organic? Is the miracle grow organic?
It is organic but I will use a chemical type fertilizer now and again. Mostly compost. I think it is silly to be '100%' something or you're not. Chemical fertilizers used in a target way, do no harm. It's just an argument point. They key is tons of compost.

What if the blueberry plant that we have is in a small patch and can't fit another blueberry plant? My mom randomly chose a blueberry plant in 2020 and it hasn't grown any berries. The soil is not acidic in our yard and my parents don't think it is worth it to get soil acidifier for one plant.
Not much you can do but you can acidify the base and still get BB. The just do better with 2nd plant. It can be in another location

Hi: Just a small correction. The size of your blueberry plants depend mostly on the variety. I have varieties that grow 3-4 ft and others that grow 10 feet. Also you should ensure both varieties produce fruits in the same period since there are early, mid-season, late, and anything between.

Its a good point to understand the Highbush, Lowbush, and Rabbiteye are all different plants based upon your region. After looking at compatible bloom times, its real confusing to select varieties for a continued harvest; consideration of a late frost/early spring can drop the flowers. Thanks RG

I just bought some blueberry plants and found this helpful! I want mine to grow into hedges too but I have mine along the fence line. Is there a rule of thumb about planting them so far off the fence ??
The bush out a good 3 feet so you just have to keep a walking path available for when larger

what are your thoughts on using whey as an acidifier. we make a farm cheese using vinegar as the curdling agent.
Hmm that is new too me. I don't know. You can support The Rusted Garden by using this link for anything you purchase on Amazon. It doesn't have to be garden related. Anything you purchase gives a % return back to The Rusted Garden

When in doubt, your soil is probably not acidic enough. I struggled with my blueberries for years, assuming my soil was acidic enough with the peat. It wasn't.
For the record, I planted my plants in 2:1:1 peat sand and worm castings. When I began to notice issues I switched to watering with exclusively fresh brewed coffee (leftovers from the office at the end of the day), and that still wasn't enough. Three years later I started using a soil acidifier and they're finally putting out sturdy growth and fruiting readily. The brand I'm using is epsoma.
So that is why I added the liquid feed that is acidic. Would you recommend the epsoma in addition?
Thank you
Espoma Soil Acidifier
Sulfur will acidify the soil but it also kills the fungi that blueberries need to get nutrients. Blueberry plants do not have root hairs and depend on ericoid mycorrhyzae to get nutrients. Feed the soil to encourage soil bacteria and these little critters will help feed the fungi which feed the plants.
Miracle Grow? Have you tried creating your own compost/compost tea/Closed loop food system?
Lots of compost but never enough. If I settle in a bigger homestead, I hope to produce masses of compost and use that and worm castings.
I grow certain plants specifically for chop & drop & composting. That makes a huge difference.
i did not know that about mulch competing for nitrogen...i was wondering if it was bad for the soil to be mixed in. my chickens scratched up my flower bed...kicked my mulch around....i need to put up a fence if my chickens want to free range.
Just in time,I planted blueberry last year in March but I have not been able to get another one to plant. Please can I get another variety. I planted vaccicoym blossoms blue crop. Which is the best variety blueberry to plant. First time watching. Thanks

For two years mine produced hardly any berries. I saw a YT video that said to try azalea fertilizer. I put some on the plants in late winter and this spring they have exploded with fruit.
Yep it has more sulfur for acidity.

I know this is an old post, but you are local to me. I want to plant blueberries this year, but is it really safe to plant them from store-bought in the spring or do I have to wait until September? (We're in the same state / zone)
No you can plant now. Any nursery has great plant. Fully rooted plants at the big box stores work. Now is a good time. Dont plant the little stem thing you get at HD OR Loews for $9.95. Start them in gallon pots first and let them get established.

I bought blueberries raspberries and blackberries at Walmart yesterday day they came in a plastic pouch I live in Marion Michigan do I need to wait till last frost some have some new growth last frost is around Memorial Day what do I need to do thanks your channel is great
In theory you dont have to wait. You might want to pot them in to gallon pots and bring them in if hard freezes come by. If they have been sitting around where it is warm for a while the foliage will get damaged in a frost. They have to toughen up to the elements. However, the roots will be fine if you plant them outside.

Thank you, very informative
Glad to help.
According to a blueberry producer he says you dont want a nitrogen based soil and he says 50% wood chips and peat moss, along with sulfur...
Interesting. I dont really feed them too much but for the set up. I wonder how much nitrogen is too much?

The background noise is annoying. Have you done a new blueberry video?
This was very helpful, Gary. Thank you! Are you concerned for your other plants in the same garden bed or nearby garden bed? Is there acidic run off that could affect them? I was thinking of planting my blueberries separately from other plants bc of that concern.
Nope. The change in acidity isn't enough to stress other parts of the garden. Its okay to mix.

Does it matter if one variety is an older plant and the other is younger?
Not really. I am sure there is a couple combos that arent the most effective but I wouldnt worry about it. Just 2 different varieties
