A class act! This man came out of "nowhere" as a foreign film actor and just bowled Hollywood over in his 50's. I think he was 53 years old at the time of Inglorious Basterds and 56 at the time of Django Unchained.
***** Exactly! Could that be the confused look on Nicholson's face? I wondered why he had that look because surely it could not have been from Christoph Waltz's speech...or could it?
Waltz’s trajectory as an actor is a perfect example of how a super intelligent, multitalented person slogged through his acting career for *37 YEARS* without the huge success his ability and application deserved, until luck-and only luck-brought him to the attention of Tarantino. After coming to his attention, because the woman who at the time did international casting for Germany chose him as one of a shortlist of actors for Tarantino to audition, Waltz was able to land the role of Hans Landa. When I hear this kind of story, my thoughts always go to the hugely talented people never get their “lucky break.” So I’m _VERY_ happy for Mr. Waltz!
Bay Area sports fan Waltz’s performance was quality in Django, but I honestly think Hoffman should of won it for The Master, he was outstanding in that film as was Joaquin Phoenix (probably deserved it an Oscar for his performance as well)
he is like Bryan Cranston in the Emmy, always a winner and this time Christoph needs a third Oscar to confirm to the world that he is a true Legend in the acting
His character’s death in Django was the first time a fictional character’s death bummed me out as an adult. I know the film didn’t leave much time to be sad about his death, but his 1 of a kind treatment of the slaves in the movie that isn’t seen from any other white character in the whole movie left the remaining scenes with the feeling that something was missing. And even when Django was riding off with his wife, I could still feel the absence of safety that his character provided for Django. And to go from that to his character in Inglorious Basterds just shows how amazingly dynamic and talented Christoph Waltz actually is
+Hariharan Acharya ~ Well said. The way he leaned against and touched his boys head, with the father sharing an awkwardly pure moment where he is not the movie star, just a dad to his boy...was extremely touching. Demons in the closet are very, very hard. I say demons and not drugs, because drugs are only the symptom and not the problem. This talented man had problems (like so many of us do) that the drugs did not create. This is where the pain and heartache is...
2nd Academy Award nomination, Second Win. DAMN STRAIGHT! Love the other actors nominated but Christoph has got to be one of my favorite living actors at the moment.
He's one of only 6 people to pull this off for acting (2 noms/2 wins); the other 5 being: Luise Rainer (Best Actress TWICE for THE GREAT ZEIGFIELD (1936) and THE GOOD EARTH (1937)) Vivien Leigh (Best Actress TWICE for GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) and A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (1951)) Helen Hayes (Best Actress for THE SIN OF MADELON CLAUDET (1931) and Best Supporting Actress for AIRPORT (1970)) Kevin Spacey (Best Supporting Actor for THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1995) and Best Actor for AMERICAN BEAUTY (1999)) Hilary Swank (Best Actress TWICE for BOYS DON'T CRY (1999) and MILLION DOLLAR BABY (2004)). Others have pulled off 100% perfect win record in other categories, like: Michael Douglas (1 for Best Picture (producing) and 1 for acting (winning both)) Ben Affleck (1 for screenwriting, 1 for Best Picture (producing) (winning both)) Saul Zaentz (3 Best Picture (producing) nominations, winning ALL THREE) Mark Berger (the all time record holder for highest "perfect score", going 4 for 4 - all for Best Sound Mixing) and many more.
Tarantino was already the greatest writer/director to me, but then Inglorious Basterds came along, I wasn't too excited about the plot but I still eventually gave it a shot and discovering Christoph Waltz blew my mind. May the 2 of them keep working together, Quentin's writing is amazing and it was really sublimated by Christoph's acting in both movies. Really powerful combination.
I love the interaction between him and Tarantino . Must feel incredible for the two of them to work together so well. One writes incredible characters and the other brings them to life so well it’s award winning
I love the respect Mr. Waltz had for his fellow nominees. He waited until an applause was finished after congratulated them before resuming with his beautiful speech.
Christoff Waltz is such an incredibly humble and nice person and it’s so crazy to see him being himself because of how completely he melts into his characters, especially comparing his nice humble real self to characters like Hans Landa.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Never has anything been more well deserved! This man is an absolute genius - I just can't fathom how this much talent can be inside a single human being. Quentin Tarantino is the only on who can really utilize this; it's like Quentin knows how to puncture Christoph allowing for all the talent to spill out all over the place. I'm just sitting here, ready to sob it all up.
@@flavio7180 I'm tryna come up with them words to form a response to the pile of shit you just dropped here (no disrespect to Hoffmann) you fucking serious now?? Really?
This man has more class, respect, manners, and humility than anyone I know. I think all his "nervousness" as some might see it, is just his insanely intense gratitude telling him to be respectful to all the people that have helped him achieve his success. The genuity in his speech and even his use of his character's words at the end there really show how much he's invested in this film, and how much he respects the time and effort others have invested.
Loved both his Oscar-winning performances, and I love him even more for how humble he is. Such a well-spoken man. There has to be more people like him in the world.
When a guy's speech is nothing but thanks, I feel like he truly appreciates what the award means and doesn’t believe he should be the one getting it. ❤
Very well deserved (his both Oscars). Two very different roles, yet Waltz managed to bring that same energy and commandment of the screen to both Landa and Schultz. He is an incredible actor and made Django Unchained for me.
JustinHenryfan the character was different, not the performance. It's now Waltz's signature role. It was very well done, but like many people have said, he probably could have done it in his sleep. I mean Leo stole the show when they shared the screen in Django. But that's just my opinion (but it's a quite popular opinion)
holygoalie3 Oh, I loved Leo! I love all his performances! But somehow he doesn't have an Oscar and it's looking like he isn't getting one this year either. He wasn't even nominated for Django! Makes me mad...
His first breakthrough role in inglorious basterds won him an Oscar and then collaborated and again with Tarantino won his second Oscar ..Tarantino really has an eye for talent and this guy delivered it perfectly

***** He was a drug addict yes, but no one does heroin for fun. You do it cos it seems like the only way to function normal. You should give thanks that you don't have such problems instead of pointing fingers.
No, the opposite. Drugs take strong, driven people and rip them down. It took me a few years to rid myself of an addiction, and I went to Princeton and became an engineer. I wasn't born weak, drugs just "get" you when you start to be in denial
gregg mikulla There's a study that says that addiction to drugs is not genetically, so you are not born predisposed to consuming drugs. What it happens is that emotionally affected people(especially in childhood) are predisposed later on in their adulthood to take drugs. Nothing in itself is addictive. Not everyone who drinks a glass of wine becomes addictive. I apologize. I said "weak", what I should have said was that they're the victims of environment. For example, if we stress mothers during their pregnancy, their children are more likely to have traits that predispose them to addiction. And so on. It's similar with violence, you know. Most violent people were abused in their childhood. Also a study. There's no genetic behavior. It's the environment. By the way, congrats on overcoming your addiction. You're one of the lucky ones!

Cause he is an incredible actor.
Well of course an Austrian man can defeat them all. Europe is talent, America needs more of that
Christoph Waltz even deserve Oscar for delivering this speech so effortlessly..
Seriously, that speech in and of itself was a moving performance.
Oscar for "inglorious basterds": goes on stage with Dr.Schulz appearance.
Oscar for "django unchained": goes on stage with Hans Landa appearance.
You are goddamn right , Forrest 😂😂😂
I noticed same.
An austrian Guy winning two Oscars while playing a german guy.
@@ThoBoehistory tells us what happens to Austrian guys playing a German guy....
Once playing a German villain and then a German hero✌😂

2:55 Sudden cut into Jack Nicholson wearing sunglasses -- GOLD.
LMAO
***** Actually I wonder why they showed Jack's face in the middle of Chris's speech when he was not mentioning him at all..it's just odd
Waltz!
Incredible. Do you know who the caster was? I only know Simone Bär was a highly influential one
aye, looked it up, it was Simone Bär!
Not gonna lie seeing Phillip Seymour Hoffman smile makes me sad. He died about a year after.
Bay Area sports fan Waltz’s performance was quality in Django, but I honestly think Hoffman should of won it for The Master, he was outstanding in that film as was Joaquin Phoenix (probably deserved it an Oscar for his performance as well)
I'm sad seeing him smile there, too.
And he was a great actor
To think that any performance could have beaten DDL in Lincoln is just fucking idiotic
I know. Hoffman was another incredible actor. At least he won an Oscar before he passed away.

Christoph Waltz : I don't think they will give it again.
Oscars : I insist.

Nice reference
Well if you insist...
Dutch: he insists!
When Christoph Waltz gets nominated for an Oscar, he always wins.
Imagine him and Daniel Day-Lewis in a movie together? That'll be something.
ThirstBusterFroster They're the same person. Probably
Christoph Waltz only gets nominated for an Oscar when directed by Quinten Tarantino.
Well Big Eyes is coming soon. Maybe he will get nominated for an Oscar in that movie. Who knows?
he is like Bryan Cranston in the Emmy, always a winner and this time Christoph needs a third Oscar to confirm to the world that he is a true Legend in the acting
How to get an oscar:
-get Tarantino to direct your movie
-add Christoph Waltz
Done
Lets agree: almost everyone was phenomenal in django unchained
It really was the perfect cast.
same goes for Inglorious Basterds tbh

Jack actually pissed himself just at that moment🥴
“I couldn’t resist.” See what you did there
His character’s death in Django was the first time a fictional character’s death bummed me out as an adult.

RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman
+Hariharan Acharya ~ Well said. The way he leaned against and touched his boys head, with the father sharing an awkwardly pure moment where he is not the movie star, just a dad to his boy...was extremely touching. Demons in the closet are very, very hard. I say demons and not drugs, because drugs are only the symptom and not the problem. This talented man had problems (like so many of us do) that the drugs did not create. This is where the pain and heartache is...
+Hariharan Acharya he was one of the only elite ones left :(
wait he's dead?
yes
He's a terrific actor. I wish he could star in better movies these days, but at the same time he's like a gem that has to be preserved.
I don't understand how someone who seems that nice played the worst Nazi ever.

well no need to be a smartass
His acting was very good, but it cant be even compared with Ralph Fines portreyel of Amon Goeth in Schindlers list. That was pute bad ass acting
I am ashamed that I still haven't watched that movie
2nd Academy Award nomination, Second Win. DAMN STRAIGHT! Love the other actors nominated but Christoph has got to be one of my favorite living actors at the moment.
Me too! Hans Landa is timeless acting as well. Waltz has the swag of the old-time film stars such as Cagnie, Mitchum, Portier etc.
tarantino + waltz = 1 oscar
100% success. damn impressive
He's one of only 6 people to pull this off for acting (2 noms/2 wins); the other 5 being:
Luise Rainer (Best Actress TWICE for THE GREAT ZEIGFIELD (1936) and THE GOOD EARTH (1937))
Vivien Leigh (Best Actress TWICE for GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) and A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (1951))
Helen Hayes (Best Actress for THE SIN OF MADELON CLAUDET (1931) and Best Supporting Actress for AIRPORT (1970))
Kevin Spacey (Best Supporting Actor for THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1995) and Best Actor for AMERICAN BEAUTY (1999))
Hilary Swank (Best Actress TWICE for BOYS DON'T CRY (1999) and MILLION DOLLAR BABY (2004)).
Others have pulled off 100% perfect win record in other categories, like:
Michael Douglas (1 for Best Picture (producing) and 1 for acting (winning both))
Ben Affleck (1 for screenwriting, 1 for Best Picture (producing) (winning both))
Saul Zaentz (3 Best Picture (producing) nominations, winning ALL THREE)
Mark Berger (the all time record holder for highest "perfect score", going 4 for 4 - all for Best Sound Mixing)
and many more.
Christoph Waltz is perfect. Seeing Philip Seymour Hoffman made me sad though, he has such a cute son.

The random jack Nicholson close up cracked me up
Tarantino was already the greatest writer/director to me, but then Inglorious Basterds came along, I wasn't too excited about the plot but I still eventually gave it a shot and discovering Christoph Waltz blew my mind. May the 2 of them keep working together, Quentin's writing is amazing and it was really sublimated by Christoph's acting in both movies. Really powerful combination.
Sad seeing how happy Phillip Seymor Hoffmans kid was 😢
:( I can’t believe it
Yeah heartbreaking you just never know.
You can't have children and do hard drugs, that is so, so unfair.
Got to love how he didn’t make his speech about him once. Like he even credited the fictional character of Dr. Schultz.
*kisses Quentin on the cheek first*
*goes back to kiss his wife*
I love the interaction between him and Tarantino . Must feel incredible for the two of them to work together so well. One writes incredible characters and the other brings them to life so well it’s award winning
phillip seymour hoffman laughing w/ his son was a great shot, and made me sad...
Same. Seeing him so happy just kind of got me there lol
Not only an incredibly talented actor, he's also such a sweet and humble human being.
Gotta love Christoph Waltz!
loved how he explained that he was using his characters speech by actually using another one LOL 'couldn't resist'
I love the respect Mr. Waltz had for his fellow nominees. He waited until an applause was finished after congratulated them before resuming with his beautiful speech.
Waltz: The hero here being Quentin.
Nicholson: The fuck man?!
"EXCUSE ME?!"

Why did he do that? He looked insulted or something.

Christoff Waltz is such an incredibly humble and nice person and it’s so crazy to see him being himself because of how completely he melts into his characters, especially comparing his nice humble real self to characters like Hans Landa.
He was great in Django. Amazing actor indeed.
Christoph Waltz had brought us one of the best sidekicks with Dr. King Schultz and one of the best villains with Col. Hans Landa, amazing actor!!!
django is more of a sidekick turned hero. King was the hero
+Rasmus Eskesen ti quoto in pieno broder
+Rasmus Eskesen I like how he put two Django Unchained references in his speech (The Broomhilda story, and the "couldn't resist")!
Rasmus Eskesen You’re overating the fuck out of him. Hoffman deserved it a lot more here.
@@flavio7180 BRUH!!

His performances are always stellar. So humble and well groomed. A student to the craft. Incredibly talented.
Well said. I love how he bowed on stage to all the other actors in his category as a sign of respect - seriously humble guy right there!
Couldn't of put it better myself
Loved both his Oscar-winning performances, and I love him even more for how humble he is. Such a well-spoken man. There has to be more people like him in the world.

When a guy's speech is nothing but thanks, I feel like he truly appreciates what the award means and doesn’t believe he should be the one getting it. ❤
Very well deserved (his both Oscars). Two very different roles, yet Waltz managed to bring that same energy and commandment of the screen to both Landa and Schultz. He is an incredible actor and made Django Unchained for me.
they're literally the same exact role in the way they are written and acted. Only difference is one is a bad guy and one is a good guy.
holygoalie3 That's a pretty major difference, don't you think?
JustinHenryfan the character was different, not the performance. It's now Waltz's signature role. It was very well done, but like many people have said, he probably could have done it in his sleep. I mean Leo stole the show when they shared the screen in Django. But that's just my opinion (but it's a quite popular opinion)
holygoalie3 Oh, I loved Leo! I love all his performances! But somehow he doesn't have an Oscar and it's looking like he isn't getting one this year either. He wasn't even nominated for Django! Makes me mad...
agreed! he made that movie
His first breakthrough role in inglorious basterds won him an Oscar and then collaborated and again with Tarantino won his second Oscar ..Tarantino really has an eye for talent and this guy delivered it perfectly
This man is an international treasure. Django, Basterds, Bosses, Spectre. This man will always be a legend.
A character wouldn't exist without a writer and director. Mr. Waltz both knows and appreciates that, a speech brief and powerful of thanks.
Imo, him, Jackson, and DiCaprio could have all been nominated that year and won all together.
How exactly could Sam L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio all win Best Supporting Actor?
Agreed . Also Waltz seemed like a protagonic to me, i would have put Di Caprio or Jackson as supporting.
@@dac2007 well but he wasn't the protagonist. It was Django's story and therefore, he was the protagonist. Doesn't mean Dr. King Schulz wasn't an amazing character. He totally was.

Wow
West Bradley-Taubner Yeah Woody is a really great actor and he does deserve an Oscar

Drugs are for weak people.
No, the opposite. Drugs take strong, driven people and rip them down. It took me a few years to rid myself of an addiction, and I went to Princeton and became an engineer. I wasn't born weak, drugs just "get" you when you start to be in denial
gregg mikulla
There's a study that says that addiction to drugs is not genetically, so you are not born predisposed to consuming drugs.
Thank you. Very difficult road. And I understand what you mean
