    He will attest that our natural rights are not given to us by our government, but instead come from a higher power.
    He will analyze Judeo-Christian values, and he will detail their influence over our government, our culture and our liberty.

      Yeah, he also needs to find his audience. Ben is a different speaker, he is fast and charismatic and has improved over the years. Knowles is an intelligent guy, he'll figure out how to expand his talks !

      I went to Ithaca. Ithaca in general is a very very liberal city. I don’t remember much about my 2 yrs at Ithaca, but what I do remember vividly, is something that one of my professors said, “Bible bangers are the worst thing about this country and we’d be better off without them”. She said this during class.

    This is amazing and I think this is what America is about. I can tell many people disagree with the speaker but the ones that still listen are here and are able to question what their peers abide by. I love it. I hope we can continue to have this society but I fear it will be unlikely as so many are afraid to hear words that make them feel anything other than amazing.

    Well, the Bible has a lot to say about avoiding unprofitable, unhealthy controversy, arguments etc., and I get it that the rule of thumb to avoid talking about politics and religion at dinner parties, was probably born out of good and even godly reason, and there's occasions to take that under advisement. To keep things peaceful, to err on the side of that, for the sake of Grandma, or your host, etc. . Best of course is to have a close walk with God, be very "prayed up " and usually to have some maturity and experience under your belt, to make the best decision you can on the fly. To be led by God on when to speak up, topics to introduce, and when to "answer a fool" and when to "answer not a fool" ( seemingly contradictory verses in the book of proverbs in the Bible).

    I don’t know, I thought the Founding Father’s values were made quite self-evident when the very first line of the first amendment in the Bill of Rights reads, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”
    If that’s the first thing they chose to mention, maybe, just maybe, it’s possible that they actually believed the exact opposite, that this government for once would NOT be founded on religious beliefs and would never have any.
    While individuals are free to believe whatever they choose, the government would forever be secular.
    This means that the government could not be founded on religious beliefs but for secular reasons, and it was.
    Christians like to use this “Judeo-Christian” myth to give credence to their cultish beliefs, but the reasons for establishing a classical liberal society where protecting individual liberties is sacrosanct were entirely secular. The model for our government is not done ancient Jewish civilization but instead the Roman Republic. Our founding fathers were inspired by famous Enlightenment figures such as John Locke and political groups such as the Whigs in British Parliament at the time, not by the Pope or by a priest.

    • @bayleesimone8929
      @bayleesimone8929 6 років тому +1

      You are misinformed. Another Founding document is clear. Check the Declaration of Independence. Our rights are God given. Furthermore the Separation of Church and State was to have no State religion but not to deprive religious people their rights. Do you understand that the idea of value of a human being is Christian based?

    I would like to brush Mr. Knowel's snide comment aside insinuating that spiritual conviction without the belief in the existence of a particular god is mere self promotion... I just cant believe this without proof. Haven't seen anything that would convince me yet... been looking all my life really... almost 60 years. I don't want to seem special... I have taken a lot of flak for holding this position... very unpleasant. I would really rather not be the focus of controversy. Shouting, vitriolic, insult slinging, violent people who are unwilling to listen and hold civil discourse terrify me. I am just unable to believe these stories as historical fact. I can see them as poetic metaphor, and I love J. Peterson for articulating the meaning behind the archetypes so well... love him anyway. After sorting through many many viewpoints, I came to the conclusion that whether or not god exists is less relevant than establishing dialogue, staying healthy, sorting our garbage, avoiding war and continuing with the human project. I was raised in a situation where I was surrounded by various religions, and although I can appreciate the values or instructive metaphorical descriptions that are helpful signposts when navigating morality, it is impossible for me to accept the existence of an extra-material presence that governs all and created all. Facts don't care about your feelings indeed. I rest my case. I have paid attention to the arguments for and against and remain unconvinced. I travel to various countries and do see many similarities and obvious differences in belief systems, but a strong tendency to blindly accept unfounded and often untrue pronouncements from religious leadership. The institutions have been caught out in so many corruption scandals that I would tend to caution believing people away from them... wait wasn't Christ supposedly against the church? Appreciate and see the need for ritual and an evolving moral structure, cant ascribe to dogma... cant go into that box guys. Will you still have me?

  • @CraftyMiscreant
    @CraftyMiscreant 6 років тому

    Why you lying, Knowles? Jefferson said "separation between church and state."
    The phrase "separation between church & state" is generally traced to a January 1, 1802 letter by Thomas Jefferson, addressed to the Danbury Baptist Association in Connecticut, and published in a Massachusetts newspaper. Jefferson wrote,
    “"I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State."[1]
    I mean, I like you, but the wall was for both ways. The state can't take interests in a church either.

      Who initiated the wars at Tours, or Lapento, or Byzantium, or Jerusalem, or...? And why were the targets of those wars all Jews and Christians? That’s the answer. Further, after Islam destroyed almost the entire of maritime trade of the Mediterranean via Piracy and conquered the paths of the Silk Road, what else could Columbus do except sail the long way around the world to continue trading with China? Why did America establish the largest Navy in the world except to protect American citizens from Mohammadan pirates “to the coast of Tripoli” (front their own theme song)? Mohammadanism has never been anything except a violent force for evil
