Iced watches 5 of your cabinet videos, I just can’t seem to stop! I’m curious if you have a video on how you price what you do for the kitchen cabinets?
Great long format video! Thanks for sharing. What saves me from redundancy of every day repeatable tasks is music. I have 3M bluetooth earmuffs (helicopter pilot type) that save the day. Every day that is. Customer does not hear what I am listening to and I am 7000% in the zone. Before I start a project I make sure to tell them, if they want to get a hold of me to tell me something, they'll have to wave and get my attention or send a text. It works great. I am at 50% of video so I might come back to edit. 🤣 1st edit - Who is the crew? Last video I watched you were with your son. 2nd - Most important and I have not got an answer as of yet ... After all this primer coats, paint, drying and days in between, start and finish, does the tape (even if its 🐸) pull up the paint of the cabinets where bridging, what is the trick? I would say it would pull for sure. 3rd - sorry for such a long comment, video was great, thanks for sharing and all the best. 👍
Those earmuffs sound awesome. I'll have to try that out on my next project! The Frogtape is great. I am happy to pay extra for it because it doesn't pull up the finish on us ever. If we sanded everything good, the primer should have a great bond and the tape shouldn't pull up the finish in any way. We use Frogtape to tape off the cabinets when painting the walls and we use it on them the day after we finish spraying. Never had an issue. If someone did have an issue I would guess that cabinets weren't cleaned & sanded properly prior to priming or they used a bad tape with too much adhesion.
@@diypainting Thank you! And if you really decide do check the earmuffs, look for gel cushion ear-pads as upgrade. I got them separately but now they might have a model with it already. Great protection from loud machines and sanders plus the tunes. Forgot to mention in my comment, you really come across with the message that anyone, a pro, a handyman or diy'er could tackle project like kitchen cabinets with great results. 👍👍👍
Hi, I have been watching pretty much all of your videos, I am planning to spray the doors with Wagner’s 5000 and brush and roll the cabinet faces, going with stixs primer and advance in white colour, since the recast time is 16 hours, how do you go about spraying the doors with two coats ? Do you do back side first, wait 16 hrs and then flip to the front side and spray the first coat ?? OR you just wait dry to touch and then flip and paint?
If you aren’t in a hurry and can wait the 16 hours, do it. But usually I can flip them once they have been sitting for 4-8 hours in dry conditions. I always start with the back, then go front, then back for the second coat, and finish with the front second coat. Good luck on your project.
Bondo comes with lots of other issues. Bondo is a high VOC product, you’ll want to mask up and ventilate. It’s harder to sand, so I’ve seen many times where it wasn’t sanded properly and left marks after top coat. Plus 3 does shrink, but it’s designed to be minimal and doesn’t shrink enough in this situation to be a thing. The ease of use is amazing compared to other methods.
In this kitchen we actually painted all the walls and ceilings when the cabinets were done, so not on this one. We usually paint the walls and often times the ceilings when painting cabinets. Since the cabinets are changing color, most homeowners want new wall colors too and since the kitchen is already prepped, it's a really easy time to get a new coat on the ceilings too. If we aren't painting the ceilings after cabinets, we always make sure to prep as necessary.
I asked on one of your older videos, I should have asked on this one. I have an Earlex HVLP sprayer and will be doing my first cabinet spray. What size needle do you use in your gun? I have 1.5mm and 2.0mm.
If all you had was a 2mm, i'd say that fine and go with it. But if you have a 1.5mm as well, I'd use that. Just make sure to test out your spray fan on some cardboard before spraying your cabinets. If it doesn't seem to be atomizing enough, thin the paint down about 5%. Test again, and keep thinning by 5% (up to 25% at max) until you get great atomization and a perfect spray fan.
@@diypainting Thank you very much. Until I saw your videos, I was weary about thinning paint down so much. I use exclusively SW gallery paints and the sales rep told me no thinning period!
@@syence_nird Gallery is actually a thinner paint and does not require much thinning. The most I've thinned it out is 10% when spraying with the Flexio 5000 HVLP.
Possible - yes, but every material just like every wood stains different. For the most uniform look use can use a semi-solid or full solid stain which is really almost paint.
Just curious why you switched your primer from the zinser? I'm about to paint all my cabinets black as well. (Crazy timing on this video) Do you recommend the zinser or the sherwin williams primer?
I actually try to use different products whenever possible for a couple reasons. First so I have experience with many different products and can confidently comment on them here and which ones I like the best. Second, because sometimes I find ones I like even better than what I’ve been using. Zinder Smart Prime is still one of my favorites if you want to avoid oil though (which I usually do).
Stunning transformation!

Came out beautiful
No handles? Never thought to try that. Great work.
So gorgeous. Love, love, love.
What finish did you go with on this sw tricorn black
Beautiful makeover!
Do you put a clear coat on it?

What degreaser do you recommend prior to scuff sanding?
I use Dawn dish soap and hot water, then rinse everything with wet rags.
Did you have to apply a finish coat or something to protect the paint?
Not with these paints. Older finishes that was more common due to them not being as durable.

I’ve heard the wood fillers shrink, so many use bondo as a filler, for holes and imperfections. Do you ever use Bondo?
Bondo comes with lots of other issues. Bondo is a high VOC product, you’ll want to mask up and ventilate. After sanding the first coats of primer and top coat, do you just vacuum the dust or do you use a damp cloth to make sure there no dust left ?
We shop vac up all the dust with a HEPA filter. I don't use tac cloths as they can leave behind a reside, and a damp rag just ins't necessary IMO.
@@diypainting have you used BM command? I like how it dries so much faster
Do you tape off the ceiling for overspray?

What did you use for primer on this one?
I believe I used SW Extreme Block Alkyd primer.
Is it possible to wood stain over the drywall mud you use as a wood filler?
Possible - yes, but every material just like every wood stains different. For the most uniform look use can use a semi-solid or full solid stain which is really almost paint.
Where do you get the grain filler, are the name of the kind you use
he makes it. go to 8 mins.

@@diypainting well, thanks for the videos! They have definitely boosted my confidence.. ordered the advanced cabinet makeover kit. 👊
💪🏻💪🏻
sooo how are they gonna open those drawers? lol
Not sure. They had a interior designer making all the decisions and they all loved it. So…. Whatever they want!
I’ve hired 3 different companies to paint different parts of my house including the kitchen cabinets and non of them were this thorough
There a lot of different companies out there painting. Some are amazing, some I’ve seen have been kinda rough. Really have to vet them carefully.
