Couple years down the line and I watched this video for the second time today. Thanks bud!
I just finished this video, holding my a7ii all the way through, making changes and taking notes. I'm glad I came across your channel, this is the first of your videos I've watched. Parts 2, 3, and 4 are next on my list. Your review is tremendously more helpful, engaging, and entertaining than reading through the Sony manual. Very enjoyable and informative! Thank you!
I dont think i've ever commented on a youtube video before but I just had to. You have inspired me to put my all into videography. I've always enjoyed things similar to videography all my life. Upon graduating highschool I decided to "play it safe" and am currently in college for the oil refinery. I'm not dropping out but a while back I purchased a mavic pro as an impulse buy and I am so glad I did. It introduced me to the world of videography and since then i've been shooting videos with it non stop. I shot my girlfriends baby shower with it mostly handheld and started getting contacted by people and venues wanting me to shoot weddings. I decided to buy a sony a6500 and zihyun crane. I basically just watch you and peter mckinnon all day and from watching your videos is what swayed me to sony. For the first time in my life I truly feel like I figured out what I want to do with my life. (im 24 for reference) im still continueing with college but im going to put 200% into videography and see where it takes me. Your videos have really given me that confidence I need. I just recieved my a6500 today so i'm going back and watching this series (again) while I set up my menus and I just felt the need to thank you. These kinds of videos are so unbelieveably helpful. Thank you so much for what you do.
+Calegan Media hey dude thank you so much! So glad I inspired you! Hope you love your a6500!
Dude, you are just explaining it so perfectly! Those 38 minutes are flying by!
Cannot tell you how much this helped. Havent used cameras since the 60d was one of the best. I scored this camera today for a steal at 500 with the 24-70mm. I was worried about the change but you made it easy! Thank you
Thanks for this video series. It's quite amazing that you took the time to go through all of these settings and explain them. This was, unlike many youtube videos, actually VERY helpful.
Matt, even now in late 2023, this tutorial has helped me immensely as I once again try to use my A7Sii (which has been nearly unused since I bought it years ago because the menu systems is so intimidating). It's a shame to let my great camera go to waste, and your tutorial is WONDERFUL! Thanks again!
I just switched from a Canon to the Sony A7sii and this video was exactly what i needed before my shoot. Thanks a lot for this simple and extensive video. I'm gonna do my schooling on the SonyA7sii through your videos. Keep up the good work and best of luck.
As a new wedding filmmaker who just booked 3 weddings in the next month and a half, I am SO HAPPY, so happy, that this video exists. A thousand thanks. Whew!
Just got my A7S ii today, had canon all my life and a shoot tomorrow morning. Had to look no further. You're awesome man. Life and time saver. ; )
Me too. Was looking for another Canon and the guy at Best Buy pointed me to the A7SII and the A6300. So much better. We just need more native glass :\
Hey Matt, Thanks for putting the time into these videos! I've owned my A7S2 for about 8 months now and finally feel like I'm starting to get the hang of it after watching your videos. Keep it up!
This was SO incredibly helpful. I've recently started filming weddings (steel productions) on vimeo and I've rented the Sony a7sii for one wedding so far. I didn't put as much effort as I should have before hand in regard to going through all the possible settings. However, I did watch a few of your previous videos and took your advice and shot in PP8 cine4 for a wedding I shot in Philly, AND even bought one of the lutz you suggested lol. It came out great, and I got a lot of positive feedback and possible clients from the video, so believe me when I say you have been a big help. I'm shooting my 4th wedding tomorrow and have rented this camera again, so I can't wait to use what I've learned from this video!! Thanks again. Also you're hilarious so it made the length easier to get through!
One of the best tutorials on camera set up! Thanks!
i sat here watching this with my a7s ii and changed all my settings! thanks for this video, going through all those sub headings was quite daunting because i don't understand a few of them :)
thank you thank you thank you! this is a life saver! I'm new to Sony coming from Canon and have a shoot tomorrow! This video is a life saver! And surprisngly very entertaining. I mean who else can make an almost 40 minute video on camera menu's entertaining? haha Great stuff as always Matt!
so helpful, thanks. also appreciated the bits of humor and personality amongst the insight. u livin that life meng
Matt, Thank you so much for taking the time to put this video together. I can't wait for more!
This helped me so much I just bought my A7Sii and this being my first Sony cam had me so confused with the menu settings. Thank you!
A big help Matt, thank you.
Thanks for this well-made, informative video! Helped a lot !!
Thank you so much for this video, it helped me a lot to understand the settings of a7s2. Appreciate it!
Great video Matt! So helpful!
Hey Matt, a few quick corrections
1) The DRO applies also for video, there is another famous color profile amoung A7sII shooters and its: Picture Profile Off, Autumn Leaves Creative Style (-3,0,-3 DRO 4) it's also what Brandon Li uses.
2) The Center Lock-AF also applies for video and is actually a really useful feature, it basically tracks the subject in the frame, Gary Fong has good videos explaining that feature and how to use it.
Hey Lyubo! Thanks so much for the help and corrections! As I'm sure you know, the menus are complex and I don't know everything. :)
Glad to know the DRO and Center Lock on AF both work for video. I'll have to try those both out! Thanks!
Just for clarity, Matt; DRO is not available if you use a Picture Profile.
DRO have downside of giving a bit more noise in the shadows. Also, if you crunch shadows in post, the extra bits used to store that nose is lost in the midtones and highlights so not sure its good to allways use.
Nicely done Matt thank you!
This was AWESOME. Really hoping you're going to release the next video on custom buttons this week!!
Matt this has helped me so much.... I'm a dad learning to be a pro video my kids
So so excited that I can watch this video and ACTUALLY put it into practice, as I finally bought my A7S II yesterday! :)

You're great Matt.... this is easily the most helpful video on the net. I have a a7Rii and the settings were virtually the same.
I love your presentation style too, so un-American (no hey 'what's up' false crap) and so calm and concise. Thank you, I'm off to watch all your others now :)
Matt you're the most helpful videographer youtuber I've found in 3 years. Thanks!!!
Subbed in the first 60 seconds. I know this is almost a year old, but it helped me tremendously. Thanks so much Matt!!

longest video I've watched in a while but good information, thanks, I'm on to part 2
Just did the whole thing with my alpha 6500... even worse because I always have to pause the video an look for the right menu because sony decided to change the layout of its menu.
Thanks for pulling me through!
Costum buttons coming up tonight!
Thank you so much for this video! You are a god! Haha! Seriously though, the level of patience it must have taken is amazing and this Sony newbie is very happy. :)
Good stuff man, Thanks
Great vid Matt,) Tnx
Just when I thought I finally had everything figured out with my camera your video showed me I didn't. Had no idea about the airplane mode for example. Really helpful even though I have an RX10, the menu is pretty much identical
HUUUUGE HELP MATT!!! I really appreciate the time and effort you've put into this series of training videos! I remember you mentioning somewhere that you did (may be you were going to) a video on low light shooting. Is it out yet?
+Alexey Plastun thanks Alexey! I'll add that to my list of video ideas. I haven't made a video about that yet. :) mostly though, for low light shooting I just recommend fast lenses and learn the ISO limits of your camera.
Fireworks ARE great.
Subbed

Thank you for the great videos, I really admire that you´re doing this so well! Very helpful :)
does this all apply to the a7rII?
Thank you so much
Brendan Mansfield I’m wondering as well...
I'll probably know by the time you see this, but does the "recover DB" work if I pulled the SD card out before the camera was done recording to it? (I was swapping cards at the last second and i switched off the record button, and then started pulling the card before the camera was done recording data to it...
