I grew up in Delaware. I had all black friends growing up. They were the exact same age as me and same grade. I always wondered why we never had classes together. All my black friends were in the same classes, but I was in classes with white people. I have no idea til I grew up...that it was systematic! What a shame!!
Exactly, it is systematic. The practice of placing students in certain educational tracks is called tracking. Black students especially black males are usually placed in the lowest educational tracks leaving them unprepared for survival as adults.
I'M WHITE THE REASON IS CAUSE WHEN SHIT JUMPS OFF EVERYONE IN THE ROOM JUMPS ON THE WHITE KID l know I went to P.S DUPONT HIGH SCHOOL . WELL COULD NOT GO BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED.
I lived on 31st & Jefferson 40-50 years ago. I'm in another country now, but I miss it so much that sometimes I use Google street to just wander around virtually and feel like I'm there. It was out of homesickness now that I found these two videos. It was already a tough neighborhood in the 70s. I can't imagine now difficult it must be now. Just watching these young people describing the situation made me want to cry. I wish I could help. The people of Wilmington deserve so much better.
Worse now, even when Wilmington I thought was doing better, last visit to see Auntie. Nope. Hood part, still hood, unfortunately. She finally will be moving, retired now, worked in nearby NJ, but just couldn't afford the rent. We are happy she finally leaving DE., this year. For good.
I was born and raised in Wilmington until the age of 13 before my mother moved us south. My family is still up there and it's sad to know this is where we are. My entire family moved back for a few years but I was old enough to say I wasn't going back. As much as I miss my family and friends I just can't see myself moving back. Visit, absolutely, but never move back.
I grew up in Delaware and seen first hand the shit that happens in Wilmington. Heroin blue bags everywhere like leaves on the ground, Needles everywhere, shootings robberies, everything you can think of . For per capita it is the top 5 murder city in the nation. Shit is real in Delaware
I grew up on 35th Street and Eastlawn in Wilmington, Delaware been gone for a long time, but Philly has and always will have a major influence on Wilmington, will always love the East Coast, but things are so different from when I was a young buck running around in the streets.
Speaking from personal experience, the public school system has failed Wilmington youth in a massive way. Not individual teachers, but the administrations and unions. It's all about getting kids through the system no matter how badly they are struggling. A kid can be getting bad grades, falling behind the standards, showing behavioral problems, signaling they are going through troubles at home and in their personal life, and the system doesn't care. The administration just says "There's nothing we can do about it" and tells the teachers to basically shut their mouths and pass kids through just to maintain their graduation/pass levels so they can get their bonuses and more funding. But where does the funding go? As said in the video, the youth programs have been cut or completely shut down, and this includes many extracurricular outlets in the Wilmington school districts. I have immediate family who taught in Red Clay schools for 20 years. It always depresses them to see the name of one of their former students in the news for shooting, drugs, robbery etc. They always say, "Wow, I told the principal and school board multiple times this kid was in trouble, and needed some kind of intervention. They ignored me and now look!" The name of the game is forcing kids through the system regardless of the consequences. No thought is given to their future, only the present. These kids are set up to fail and just end up in prison like these guys said. Not saying ALL the blame lies on the Wilmington school district, but it is definitely is a major factor, and one which is conveniently never mentioned by our media or politicians.
Sounds like an excuse.. If you live in a shit hole city, why are you breeding babies? If you're poor, live in a ghetto, why have kids? Stop making excuses for these people.
Yea delaware schools were trash i just left delaware i was in a red clay school and i can confirm they are bad it felt like every week something bad happened i love delaware but they need to get stuff together
Stop making excuses and have some accountability. There are good teachers in these schools but the parents aren't involved in there education. Kids haven't changed its the way they are being raised that's changed.
Marshall Williams the problem is the schools have to pass these black kids because if they don't pass them they're in big trouble racist this and that same with the rest of these blacks for crimes they got to let him know man you arresting many blacks in your racist

I’m from Wilmington & I’m 17 . I’ve seen family members and People I knew (Teenagers) get killed over Gun Violence and Street Gangs. We got one of the highest crime rates in The USA 💯 it’s Honestly sad that we’re killing each other one by one 😓 and We’re one of the smallest states
young fool what’s it like in Chester PA? It’s a really rough and ran down. Crime and drugs are rampant. I wouldn’t advise wondering around there at night.
I grew up Alex over Riverside. We lived "around the corner" from each other. He ain't lying about Stormin Normins and we played football for the Trojans. We practiced in the baseball fields. They started deading all those programs as we got older. I know Mil "the barber" we grow up like family over Claymont St, Vandever Ave, playing ball at Battlefield and Kingswood. Grabbing dutches from the golf back when he had the Lexus. Fam I since moved to the suburbs of Maryland after a few of my family members got shot. I aint coming back.

The thing i like about these people is at least they are educated and know this area they live in isn’t the right lifestyle and they understand this is wrong.
Appreciate your honesty I always have boxes of toys from my son s old toy box I want gonna drop them off somewhere in town. I don’t like dropping stuff off at Goodwill because I shop there sometimes.
As a native Delawarean, born and raised in Lewes in Sussex County...I can honestly say that growing up as a Delawarean, Wilmington almost seemed like a different world sometimes! Yes, there were severely impoverished Minority areas in Sussex County like old West Rehoboth, or Coverdale in Seaford areas...but the Wilmington area was just different! The citizens need to really get tired of their environment and want to make change, that is the only way its going to happen in an area like Wilmington or other areas like it around the country. Things only get worse for the citizens if the people that really get tired of everything are the Politicians and Law Enforcement....and when those two entities get to gether, your way of living will cease to exist....and not for your benefit! The overall mentality is where it all starts, and just like any troubled area around the country that has successfully improved their towns...it all started from within, and then the outside entities begin to take notice and help. I have lived in delaware all my life, and it hurts to see this type environment existing in our home state. But change always starts from caring, love, and wanting something better for the next generations! Thank you for posting this video
Great episode! Wish it had more views. Everything starts with an idea, including change. These folks are thinking, and that's where the ideas are born. 💯👍👊
I love this town. You miss it when you're living somewhere else--- the brick row houses-- "wooder", Especially the sub shops. It's important to survive and to get education.
nope. not everyone i know, they ALL happier away from the once murderous capital of the world for years. I know many happier out of there, thank the lord.
The riverfront is gorgeous you have a lot beautiful cheap real estate, let’s not dwell on ignorance, Wilmington is a cool place and much cleaner than Philadelphia, just misguided and at least gentlemen speaking are human beings with emphathy
Wow I’m from the Midwest and I have never seen such an oppressive atmosphere and it seems the ppl are mentally stuck- depression is probably an understatement- plus dense living conditions can be overwhelming it would truly be a culture shock for me, but I wish many blessings of hope healing ❤️🩹 and restoration for the ppl of Wilmington DE
Love the effort put into this video. I also live in Wilmington just not the inner city. My heart goes to the people really trying to improve themselves and help make our city's community important. A little tip for future endeavors, invest in collar mics for the people you chat with. Their message will be clearer and hopefully people will walk away from the video with a better perspective. Keep the knowledge flowing real rap👍
It's time to invest in our children while they are young, to instill in them values and respect for one another. We also need the churches to come together and organize community buildings and programs to keep our Kids off the streets.Have days set aside to clean up the city, where the youth can be involved, teach them to beautify their streets by not littering, and by taking pride in their neighborhoods, and for the young men who spoke out,You can be that positive role model for the youth.Start programs to educate and encourage our youth that there is more to life than violence, drugs, and hatred.
Kicking the fathers to the curbs is what is wrong..... that needs to be fixed first. But as long as the government pays for the kids..... what use is the BLACK MAN?
The kids are only doin what we did when we saw the same thing when we were young. The same game is the same game 50 to 75 years ago......change starts personally ....per person!
I moved from Wilmington on the eastside in 99 those where the years we could walk the streets until it got dark I went to camp it was safer I go visit I dont notice my city but it's crazy the city mantality once it's in u it's in you
It's all about Humanity growing up and treating each other better. It's not a black or white thing it's a richer poor thing. If you rich you white if you pour you black that's what it's all about listen to Tupac he told you all this but nobody's listening grow up men be a man and take care of your family women be a woman and raise the children. It's time for families to stick together it's time for Humanity to stick together cuz we all in this together and we all fight the same War against the rich people
Tell that to rich liberals that encourage abortion and the welfare system that weakens the family unit. They're also for legalization of drugs and open borders that lower wages at the lower end of the job market. Yet, blacks overwhelmingly vote for Democrats that advocate such policies as they divide this country by race and class in the name of fairness. Oh, and many of those dems have huge personal wealth. Diane Feinstein, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine waters all are millionaires or multi millionaires. You guys need to wise up.

Just look at this and look at where you from same shit different part of the world man, this saddens me deeply we have to do better somehow someday SOON! more like fake models, since Real models, are tall fit, long legs, walking Fashion on the Runway, and other REAL modeling, no fake insta shorter type chicks, who think bent over barely clothed is a real model, Never will be. funny some really think in the SOUTH, to hear, further east coast, to south west( texas OK etc) thinking they a model smh. sh-t all f'kd up. peace.
I'm lol at Steve, because it's so True,. I agree, on that. Exactly. Same sh-t diff zip code. (SNAP) is right, as my sons say same. all born mid to late 90s, early 2000s.
These Brothers need to examine themselves. REALLY examine themselves. They keep talking about what it was and what parents now aren't doing. Truth is their parents and elders didn't teach them well. Did they do well school when they were young? Did they go to college? Did they learn a trade and/or start a business. All them Boys Clubs and City Programs BEEN closed across the US now for over 30-40 years. The past is gone, So how much time do they spend on a daily building up (the true meaning of education)their children in things that really matter: The ability to think for themselves and analyze. The mastery of critical reading and math, effective writing and speaking. To get really good at these things we must spend A LOT of time on them. We can't leave it up to the schools. We have to send them to school "over-prepared". I've seen these types of documentaries my whole life. They been making them since before I was born. Our conditions are in many ways the same. NO ONE is coming to give us a leg up or a break. We must take it upon ourselves to prepare ourselves DAILY- like our life depends on it. Then we can legally make them give us what we need and still find legal opportunities without them.
We look at this and all we see is it has gotten worse. We need to get back to build communities, schools we need to fight for the children. I want my grands to have a chance, I was young and left my kids to fend now I'm a grand, I know the young parents don't want to hear this. We need to go all in and build community get involved teach the children and save this city that in all truth we know we love. Wilmington change starts here at homr
I drove to deleware in 2010 then vowed it would be my last time ever entering that state or even driving toward coast past 95. Wishing you all the best. Things getting shty everywhere. Foreign nations may help us
There is a part of me that feels sorry for them. They have a low IQ and no impulse control, plus dysfunctional families and culture. They are doomed as you can't fix them! All you can do is lock them up and get them off the streets.
Was born Wilmington . In that ugly ass hospital they tore down with the green roof lol . Went to stubs elementary, which wasnt a bad school at all in my opion and it was in the hood , no doubt about that but i still liked going there . I lived in Newark so it was a hike on the bus back then in the 80s . I hadn't been to DE in 20 yrs but i was there about 2 months ago. i was driving back to philly to catch my plane back to fl and it looked like not much had changed in terms of new construction or anything , i didnt see the entire city , but from i did see it needs some attention !
These young men can see the problem. They even know the solution . Gotta create a wave of change , a wave that gets bigger and stronger as it moves forward. Talk is cheap , life unfortunately is cheap as well so if we don’t value ourselves more then we’ll never create the change we deserve . It’s like 10% of the country is insanely wealthy and they run the show . We could steamroll over them if we could just unite and work towards a common goal for the greater good . Love conquers all , but it’ll take some hate to get this done . Hate the way they keep us poor and struggling , hate the way we work till we die while silver spoon trust fund brats benefit from it .
From being born and raised in Wilmington and I’m only 23 the city is bad but it was never this bad and I honestly blame the music as well these rappers are definitely brainwashing these kids and a lot of kids are dying before they hit 21 😩 I hope Wilmington get better
so now, you're late 20s or just about, my baby sister age, we only few yrs ago. She was sounding like you a few yrs ago at 23. yep. Still the same out there. Not worth it. Jonathan Zappala What, did you go to school in the 50’s?!
I grew up in Delaware. I had all black friends growing up. They were the exact same age as me and same grade. I always wondered why we never had classes together. All my black friends were in the same classes, but I was in classes with white people. I have no idea til I grew up...that it was systematic! What a shame!!
What school did you go to and when?
Exactly, it is systematic. The practice of placing students in certain educational tracks is called tracking. Black students especially black males are usually placed in the lowest educational tracks leaving them unprepared for survival as adults.
I'M WHITE THE REASON IS CAUSE WHEN SHIT JUMPS OFF EVERYONE IN THE ROOM JUMPS ON THE WHITE KID l know I went to P.S DUPONT HIGH SCHOOL . WELL COULD NOT GO BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED.
@@momdaley4 now u sound like a racist. Good job. Or a scared lil punk.
Are you like 100? Stop lying. Schools haven't segregated since the 40-50's.
I knew people from here in NY that moved to Delaware to get away from the hood....Had no idea there was a city like this in Delaware.....Crazy.
Wilmington De, Trenton NJ, Camden NJ, Chester PA are all similar.... Small cities with high crime rates.
u cute
Facts them lil cities are cruddy
@@MarliQQLuv you right before the big Atlanta shift everyone was moving to Delaware and Virginia first and then Carolina

Salute to Wilmington Delaware these brothas and sisters are speaking the truth
What truth? These people are idiots.
For good.
I want to move to a different country one day 😎
I was born and raised in Wilmington until the age of 13 before my mother moved us south.
It isn't even in the top 30 let alone top 5 though that's not saying it isn't bad
@@declanmaher1784 nah it’s bad you can literally look it up
I grew up on 35th Street and Eastlawn in Wilmington, Delaware been gone for a long time, but Philly has and always will have a major influence on Wilmington, will always love the East Coast, but things are so different from when I was a young buck running around in the streets.
Wilmington is just Philly's lil brother. Same $hit, just 30mins south. I'll always have love for the 302

I'm from Wilmington fam it really be like this

Born and raised....yes it is!
They ignored me and now look!"
The name of the game is forcing kids through the system regardless of the consequences. No thought is given to their future, only the present. These kids are set up to fail and just end up in prison like these guys said. Not saying ALL the blame lies on the Wilmington school district, but it is definitely is a major factor, and one which is conveniently never mentioned by our media or politicians.
Yeah you're right Delaware schools are trash compared to Philadelphia, Maryland areas in the philly metro region, and philly suburbs
I was born in Wilmington but grew up in Newcastle if I grew up in Wilmington I'd been dead by 19 shit ain't no joke in North Side/West Side stay safe out there y'all shit is a real jungle.

Lol, First time I was Wilmington it was at a greyhound bus terminal and while loading up my dads truck with luggage had my infant daughter's clothes stolen.
You're smart to have left. Once a brotha get out, smart to remain out. Nexcuse to go "backwards"when you're having a more better way of life, when you move... I know 2 who did live and get out of that environment,so i personally know, it can happen. 1 of ma homie's had barely lived to tell about it. HE out. Staying OUT of hoods of Wilmington.
We called it Killington, instead of Wilmington. Just happy 2 I know are alive and out of the hood. 1 moved out of the entire state, and got himself, a good home now. Has a great lady. older wiser, stable, mature, both are doing really well in nearby but different state, suburban New Jersey. Just know, if you're having a "way OUT?" Don't look back, simple as that. Life too short for it. "Peace.

I always have boxes of toys from my son s old toy box I want gonna drop them off somewhere in town.

S/O to Wilmington from New Orleans.

Nana was there for decades, but, at least left, with my dad brother and his wife, RIP nana, so she did not end up having to live her "entire life there."
