- Harley Davidson Sportster 883 Walk-around Introducing "Lucille"
Just over a week ago, I brought home, "Lucille." Over 30 years ago, I owned a 1984 "Ironhead" Sporty...and a Honda 600 Hurricane (when they were still named "Hurricanes"). I loved the Sporty...when it ran. I sold it after a year of chasing electrical gremlins but always missed the riding experience and public response. When I returned to riding a year ago, my first choice was an 883.
She's not perfect, but pretty close for the year. She'll be a work in progress returning her to stock with only minor additions.
I give you, "Lucille."
"I didn't want a Harley, so I bought a Sportster; I wanted a Sportster, so I bought a Harley."

Had mine 15 years, its a 2007 883 .
I love it, would never sell it unless i was getting another.
It has been 100% reliable for the 26,000 miles i have ridden it, i do look after it and it is serviced regularly by myself.
Enjoy yours😊
The only real issue…besides the crappy tank liner…is the electrical gremlin for the taillight. Thought (hoped) it was the ignition switch but wasn’t. Bah.
Good video. I have 883 a 98 with only 8000 miles on it
It's still stock. I'm reliving my Then came Bronson days. Red Sporty and all. My watch cap keeps blowing off. Hahaha
That’s awesome. Stock rocks! TWD
Had a 1985 xlx and a 2001 883 .. really miss them ..especially that xlx …in candy brandywine… perfect paint ..
I think this color is Patriot Red Pearl. Similar to the 84 I had years ago.
@@someguitarguy. It is. I have the same color. That was the name of the paint when I ordered it.
That red really compliments the chrome. Its beautiful
My favorite color for a Sporty.
Nice Sportster ,especially in red. I ride a Low Rider S 117 b but would love to have one of these sitting next to it in the garage.
Thanks and love red Sporties. But actually like the Harley Orange on my 883R a little more. I’ve been browsing Superglides but haven’t found anything. Like I need another bike… TWD
@@someguitarguy. Yeah, i have an all original red '79 fxef superglide with 6k original miles. Love it, but the new low rider is my favorite. the only thing i prefer on the '79 is the front fender. they are cool.
That's where the wiring harness belongs. My '97 has it in the same location, and I have owned it since new.
Thanks. Have you experienced any electrical issues due to the location?
@@someguitarguy. No issues whatsoever.
Just a nice basic looking sporty! Love the classic laced wheels, peanut tank and the low hugger stance. I’m looking for one myself.
I totally agree. Also love the HD fender bib. What sold me is it's essentially stock. The solo saddle looks great but horrible to ride. I've upgraded to a Harley Sundowner saddle. The difference is amazing...but it does lose a little curb appeal.
Nice one, small tank, buckhorn bars, spoke wheels, belt drive, beautiful stock pipes, sits right, AND a carb. I just found a pearl blue 96 with about the same mileage.
Thanks. Love the blue also. Tank had rust inside so had to replace it. Went with a 3.3 gallon tank and love the added range. The wide white walls really dress her up. Everything else is stock. Now chasing an electrical gremlin in the taillight.
Got an '06. Freakin' LOVE it! Wanna pit a 1250 kit in,
Many people do the conversion but not for me. TWD
I have had bunches of them with a beautiful 94 883 deluxe that was loaded with chrome and upgrades. Yours looks like a hugger version. If you have any swapmeets near you, you can get a lot of stock stuff people take off.
It was a Hugger. Great bike but I recently sold it.
I have the same 95 version. I love it. 50 mpg
Nice. Love mine too but waiting to get the tank back from the paint shop.
Beautiful bike! Next year I should have one of these. ❤
Best of luck with it. I enjoy riding it but seriously considering selling and going with a Royal Enfield Classic or Interceptor.
@@someguitarguy. thanks! 🙂
You still have it? Well if you do....sounds like you love that sporty very much hence you gave her a proper name and all, way to go man! way to go; my first Harley was a 2009 sportster 883 custom, she gave nothing but smiles, I'll never forget her, my very first Harley Davidson. Hope Lucille is well and still with you giving you tons of smiles, only thing I'd change are pipes and those foot controls, I just hate rear controls! I know they are mids, but man! any kind of non-forward controls to me are rear (or should I say backwards?) I just hate 'em man! ha!, anyways really cool sled! that color with the peanut tank suits her just fine! cheers man! 🍻🍻😎😎
Thanks and yes I did love her. The only issue I had was the taillight gremlin. I recently sold her and now ride an 02 883R I named “Lilith.” TWD
Mine came with narrow Buck horn bars. I am changing them out for some Drag Bars. I have forward controls, it is comfortable to me. It is great around town in and out of traffic. A lot better than my 05 Electra Glide Classic.
I prefer flatter bars and love the flat track type bars on my 883R. Not sure how they’ll be with forward controls. Sportsters are definitely more nimble and agile than the Big Twins but I’m sure the Glide is a dream on interstates, long rides, two-up, etc.
Nice little Sporty mate. I just picked up a '97 1200S yesterday and would love a set of standard pipes like you have on yours. Quite difficult to find a good set here in Australia, but I'll keep looking!
Thanks and nice. OEM is hard to find here too which is a big reason I liked this one. TWD
Cool ride!
Thanks!
Nice bike. I had a new 94 model and now a used 2003 883. The only nice improvement was they increased the fuel tank from 2 gal to 3.3. 2 gal gives you a little over 100 miles range. Your bike has likely a stage one done to it. Screaming eagle air cleaner, exhaust ( punched out or slip on) and jetting. Look on the underside of the carb with a mirror and see if the idle mixture screw plug was removed. That will be a good indication if someone has dialed in the settings.
The extra range would be nice. I had to replace the original tank because of rust and a poorly installed liner. I went with an OEM style but slightly larger. Hoping to finish the install soon with better weather.
I just bought an 03 anniversary edition I guess you call it. 12k miles on it and runs like a top.
My 03 883 is a black anniversary edition hugger model with wire wheels and factory 19” front. Only aftermarket is forward controls, jetting, pipes and bars.
@@thomasr7552 sounds like mine, except it’s blue. Same upgrades as well.
Oh, by the way, love your bike!!!
Thanks
Good looking bike. It is a keeper. I hope you can find some pipes.....
Thanks. Love the new tank and whitewalls. The Saddlemen seat is also a definite improvement.
Give 'Lucille' a pat on the old tank
thank you
Thanks and will do. Love the classic styling. The new tank is just a larger version of the peanut tank.
I think this winter it will get a 1250 hammer kit & Cams and Pipes. 110hp will be fun. They sound perty good to.
I’ve actually sold this bike and now ride an 02 883R which supposedly has the Harley 1200 conversion. However, I didn’t realize that until after I decided to buy it. It does feel stronger than the Hugger but the conversion wasn’t a factor in my decision. The Screamin’ Eagle Pro muffler with no baffle makes it the best sounding HD I’ve heard. I haven’t ridden any of the Big Twins but I’m sure any Sporty is tons more agile and nimble. TWD
Love the red paint, bright aluminum, and all the chrome, and the overall lack of flat black. To me there is nothing uglier than a flat black motorcycle. I'd replace the black oil tank with a chrome one, and get a chrome battery cover. Also a chrome belt cover and rear fender strut covers. You can even get chrome swing arms, and horns. The rear signals and tail light cover are not DOT legal. I would also replace the clutch. EVO engines have what is known as a "spring plate" in them. It is more commonly known as a "grenade plate" due to it's propensity to come apart and fill the primary full of tiny little bits of metal. They can even get into the transmission. I replaced the clutch on my '06 1200L with a Barnett "extra plate" kit to get rid of the grenade plate. Yours is getting close to the mileage when they start to fail. I love those bars. My '06 has much lower bars. I would love to install some like those, but the brake hose and all the cables would have to be replaced, and the wires lengthened. The engine needs 20w50 engine oil. That can also be used in the primary, but you can also get "primary oil" for Harleys. I'd stay away from H-D branded oils, there is nothing special about them, and they are ridiculously expensive. Those aren't Screamin Eagle exhausts. They have the wrong sound. My '06 came with no name aftermarket slip ons. I love the way they sound. They are louder than those.
Thanks for the detailed response. I did replace the missing battery cover with chrome but also prefer some black parts for contrast. I replaced the crappy signals and taillight with OEM. I know a lot of people use motor oil in the primary but it’s really not needed. I looked around and found the HD product and it shifts great. In the end, I’ll be selling it soon. Too many electrical gremlins (taillight).
i just bought a 1996 magna few months ago....no i saw a 95 883 $2.5k ....im tempted to buy it....harley sound is different LOL
Hard to go wrong with Honda reliability. Great bikes and looked hard at buying an older (pure) Japanese bike…before they all started trying to Americanize. I guess that’s what I like most about Harley’s, especially the older models: purity. And simplicity. It’s like riding a piece of history, opposed to commercialism. Regardless, enjoy your ride and TWD.
There's a date code on every tire that tells you the year of manufacture
Thanks. I’m aware of the date code but don’t remember if I looked. I replaced them with wide white walls. Looks pretty badass.
Sweet!
Thanks.
I got the same bike, same color except a 2000.The air filter element is hard to find, I used a round filter and made it work. Looks like led tail light? I have a goofy seat on mine, what's that black plate behind the seat on the rear fender?
Turns out to be a K&N filter which cleaned up nicely. Yes it was a cheap LED but was poorly wired and I thought it looked like crap. I’ve replaced it and the signals with OEM types. I kinda like the solo saddle but only for around town. I have a HD 2-up Sundowner seat on it now. The cover on the fender is a leather fender bib. Love this color btw. My favorite on a Sporty. TWD
@@someguitarguy. Cool Brother, Ride Safe!
I have the same Bike 883 Hugger 1995
Nice. I had an '84 back in the day and love/hated it.
what seat is that? Don't see where you posted it.
I think that’s some eBay special. I couldn’t find a name on it anywhere. I like the look and the fender bib, but tried two other saddles.
Nice little bike bro. I dig it. I just picked one up myself. Curious, what did ya pay for a tire, only ask cause I’m in the upstate so probably not far from ya so prices will be close. Be safe ✌️
I went with a set of wide whitewalls from a local shop. Really makes it stand out. I think they were about $200 each. TWD
I have the 95 model, blue color; just bought it. I noticed your battery looks like it fits great ... the battery that came with mine is very very tight. Can you tell what brand/size yours is?
Nice. I’ve forgotten the brand but do know it’s an AGM battery. The side cover was missing when I bought it and does fit very snug.
Does this bike have a choke
Technically no; it has an “enrichener” as it has a CV carb. Same purpose though.
Superbike
Thanks ✌️
Lucille? What are you 12 yrs old?
Exactly.
Assigning human names to inanimate objects, no matter how nice they are indicates mental illness. It’s a very good condition red 1996 Harley Davison Sportster 883, end of. Sure you disagree but that’s because the old Sportster wasn’t the only one with electrical issues! Just stop 🛑
Lol. Too funny. What’s not giving a damn about some random person’s poor attempt at an insult called? Oh wait. I know this one. It’s called “not giving a damn.” TWD.
@@someguitarguy. it is what it is I guess!
