  • In this video we build a Sun bike shop trike after we had a disastrous experience with a Amazon adult trike and take it for a ride.

    An electric version of that would be fairly neat.

      I have a Sun 7-speed trike. Have been riding it regularly for a year. Don't think Sun makes an electric version, but considering the popularity of ebikes/trikes, I wouldn't be surprised if they started selling an E version. I do think you can install an after market e-conversion kit.

    Lol i went cross country on a traditional sun pulling a burly bee two seat full of gear and a dog in my basket, this trike is solid, I've got thousands of miles on mine, im 6'4 and even though the seat doesn't go up high it wasn't a problem, the things a tank i get it sideways on two wheels and fly off curbs, solid steel baby!

    I have a manual pedal Izip Tristar (also sold by Raleigh) with a 3 speed Sturmey-Archer internal hub that goes for about the same price. You might consider a 3 speed because these bikes are heavy. Mine is about 50 lbs.

      Raleigh went bust. You can't get them here anymore. I don't know what happened to Raleigh last time I checked the new company is not keeping up the quality. I have looked at other adult trikes and haven't found anything better at the same price or less. They make a 3 speed kit for this bur big surprise..... more money. I hope the prices come down more. The prices did go up since Covid. This same trike 3 years ago was $469.99. Diamond back took over IZip I will check that out. Thanks for the comment.👍

      @@alloutbikesyeah, i noticed! i found one of these Sun trikes on facebook for cheap, but i havent bit the bullet on it bc i'd like a multi-speed trike, and i'm worried about that kit not being compatible. I don't know a lot about bikes or trikes and I don't wanna buy such an expensive kit and not have it work out

    I was particularly interested in this video because I have a Sun trike 7 gears. A couple of things I'm not too crazy about is its lack of adjustability.
    You can raise/lower the seat but in a limited fashion. I'm about 5'5" tall and my saddle is set up as high as it will go. It could still be raised a bit more but there's no way to do so that I can see. You mentioned being able to adjust the seat back a bit. I just had to replace my saddle (it broke apart) and there wasn't any way to make any adjustments to the saddle that I could find. Not even if I removed the brace bar. Thankfully it has a pretty good fit for me though.
    Please understand I love riding it. ❤ I'm also happy to have chosen the 7-gear option. It comes with a front brake and a rear disk brake.
    I do have a couple questions. When riding on a straight and level surface, isn't the trike supposed to track straight without veering left or right? If yes, what adjustments are needed so the trike will do that?

    • @alloutbikes
      @alloutbikes  10 місяців тому +1

      The seat is able to move forward or backwards by flipping the actual seat guts around. It requires taking the seat guts apart.

    • @alloutbikes
      @alloutbikes  10 місяців тому +1

      As far as tracking straight the rear-end is adjustable by the 4 17mm nuts and carriage bolts. If the rear-end is crooked the trike will go dogleg. Goodluck👍

      Thanks a lot for the responses. Since my trike was assembled by the bike shop and my own mechanical knowledge is limited, I'll just ride it as is. I'm used to its idiosyncrasies now and am quite happy with it. 😀👍

      Just in case the seat height is still an issue for you.
      My wife bought her Sun Traditional trike in 2016 from a local bike shop.
      After using it for a month, she got the seven speed kit installed at another local bike shop.
      The original shop decided they did not want to do external gears any more, for some reason.
      After a few months, I bought a slightly longer brace bar and was able to put the seat up a little higher with a slight tilt.
      I put it on myself, so I could keep the old brace bar.
      I think it was only two to four inches longer.
      But, cannot remember exactly which.

    • @LLewis-vu9qf
      @LLewis-vu9qf 9 місяців тому

      @@tightwaddad -- Thanks for the advice. I really only need about a half inch more in seat height. I know I could get an extension that fits onto the end of the brace but considering how small an increase I'd like, it's not worth the expense IMO.

    That price is about what you pay for a Worksman Cycles trike built in the USA. My Worksman electric PAV3 low rider came assembled on a pallet, but that model was quite a bit more than $600. Five times more with shipping.

    • @alloutbikes
      @alloutbikes  4 місяці тому

      True but that model has smaller wheels, weighs much more and consequently doesn't ride as well as the Sun. I love Worksman but the closest one that Worksman has to the Sun is the Personal Activity Vehicle and it's over $1,100. Is it better than the Sun... Yes but it's twice the price.

    One feature you didn't talk about was does it have a brake lock or like a car an emergency brake? After the test ride that Zeke took it sounded like you clicked something on the brake lever to disengage it. So I was just wondering if the trike had it or not or if they usually come with one. Sure would be good for mounting and dismounting. Thanks for the video Jason!

    • @alloutbikes
      @alloutbikes  Рік тому +2

      Your so right I failed to mention that. Yes it does have a excellent parking brake that works forward as well as backwards. The Amazon trike we built last weeks video worked forward but if it was on a hill the parking brake was useless going backwards.

    • @alloutbikes
      @alloutbikes  Рік тому +1

      Fenders are an add on for this model as is the rear brake. I don't know why it's not cheaper because they haven't changed this thing in 20 years. All I know is I can't find one that's cheaper that works the same or better. The only one I found that is close is the Trail mate and its even more expensive. I don't care what it is there is 2 criteria. One, it needs to ride well. Two, it needs to be sturdy. Most adult tricycles can't even do one. I still can't get used to the prices since 2020. Thanks for commenting.👍

    PLEASE!!!! RAISE YOUR SEAT AT LEAST 6 INCHES!!!!
    Your Vid's avaitar picture caused my knees to ache.
    You want your knees SLIGHTLY bent at the ottom of the pedal stroke.
    As low as your seat is now, you ARE damaging your knees!!!! You are not doing your hips ant favors, either!
    Notice how your knees and hips hurt after a couple miles???? Raise the seat to your legs are slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke - no knee or hip pain!
    Riding position on the trike is the same as on a bicycle. At least if you wat to be comfortable.
    Also, if you haben't done so already, swap out the tractor seat for a beach cruiser or even a road bike racing saddle.
    No doubt you've noticed the "tractor seat" rubs the inside of your thighs, which gets quite painfil after less than 0.25 miles.
    I have a Miami Sum trike. My first (in storage, waiting a rebuild) I put over 32.500 miles on in just over 3 years.
    My second, (bought new 2017) has fewer miles. I had a "mild" stroke less than a year after getting it, didn't have access to it for a year, then after moving to a different assisted living facility, and getting my trike here, the Guv-Ner did a 3.75 year Covids lockdown on assisted living and otherlog term heath care facilities!!!! 😡🤬😡
    I doubt I have 1,000 miles on it. (so disgusting ... I rather dout a 75 mile jaunt is "a short ride" like it was when I bought the trike. ☹️🥺😡)
    In answer to your question:
    YES! the trike is worth the asking price. In addition, the optional extra cost 7 speed derailleur system and rear disk brake area bargain - wrthh MOREthan what they cost!
    Propery set up, the trike can e used for all in-town trips, including commutting to worrk, and all shopping.
    AWALD front basket thesize of the rear basket, and/or a 4 wheel garden/nursery cart (the John Deere Green and Yellow with convertable handle to tow behinf a garden tractor or atv with a pin hitch, and 1,000 pound load capacity for under $100 at Home Depot is an excellent choice. I pu;;ed mine for over 29,000 miles. Nevereven hadto replace a tyre) ma be needed, depending on how much you get at the grocer's and other shopping.
    Using the trike meansyou don't have to buy gas for the car. You can even save the insurance and regstration costs if you go "car free".
    (I been car-free by choice since 1995. I decided "$1.359 a gallon of gas is too much!!!" I bought a bicycle and never looked back (when I got old, and decided a fall on the winter ice and snow would not do me any good, I bought my second Miami Sun trike.) When I needed to use a car, I used a company vehicle.) If it is inside 30 or 40 miles round trip (today ... used to be mtwice that or more) I can ride the trike. If I can't ride the trike there and back, I don't really need to go.

      You should have the seat higher but we were building the trike for a shorter person to try out. We didn't ride it more then 1/4 mile so we didn't need to raise the seat just to have to lower it. Thanks for sharing.👍

      Unfortunately today that is the cheapest decent one that we can find. I have been trying to find one cheaper that rides good and doesn't fall apart. The closest one to this is the Schwinn Meridian and I am always having to fix those for everything from a broken rear axle to the frame not going straight. The Schwinn rides good for average height person but the design and quality is questionable. If you know of one that is better please let me know. Thanks for your comments.👍
