As a long time cyclist - now 100% recumbent trike rider - I always enjoy your videos. The trike comfort cannot be beat and I get much more respect from automobile drivers when vehicular cycling. Keep these great videos coming!
Hey, Jason! Yep, I was really surprised by how far the autos would swing wide and away from us while on this ride. It's almost like having a super-power while you're out riding, especially when you're used to getting buzzed while riding a road bike. Thanks for watching!
I’m 65, been a mostly road cyclist for decades. Also ride a fixie, a tandem, and a little bit of mountain biking. Seriously considering a trike. Very inspiring video. Yay! 😀
Thanks for watching, John! I still ride my uprights, but the trike is a nice change and a really different type of ride. I compare it to the feeling of surfing on a two-wheeler vs a mini-Formula one car on the trike. :)
I would get one if it's possible. I am a road cyclist as well mostly, but the expansion to the Recumbent Trike made my bicycle collection really complete.
Your video just showed up on my feed, so as a catrike expedition rider who switched from a perfectly good high end cannondale 15 years ago, I thought I'd watch. This was probably the best trike video I've seen so far. I really liked it. Those Ice trikes look really smooth!
Retired lady trucker here. Yup, the trikes freaked me out. Maybe not as much as loose kids and pets, but I was always super concerned both about throwing debris into your faces and that my draft or a gust of wind would blow you under me. I've seen wind toss bikes towards a truck a couple of times and the cyclist threw an arm against the trailer to redirect the fall. I don't think you could do that on a trike in time to keep those wide front wheels from contacting the truck tires.
Thanks very much for looking out for us! Back in the early 80's, I ran out of road on my bike and took to the freeway to try and get home. I still remember what it was like when those big trucks passed me on the freeway! Pretty scary! BTW, a highway patrolman stopped me, and I got a ticket. :)
I did a 8 821km journey on my Ice Adventure2 through the Outback of Australia...finished 2months ago.I used a Burley Nomad trailer behind the trike...I was 3 and a half months on the road and it was certainly the most comfortable tour I ever did...and I have done many thousands of kilometres of tours. This thing is fantastic !!!
@@bikestrikesrazors Its allready planned...By the way...the plan was to start the Pan American Highway from Alaska in 2020 with the Trike..Covid decided its not going to happen so this year was the year with the trike...Next year it will be The year with my fatbike mainly unseald and lots of sand...also in Australia...2024 the plan is to cross America from Los Angeles and I will finish in Tampa..Florida where my daughter and her husband lives...enjoy your trike...mate..mine has got a Rholoff Hub at the back and a Slumph Drive in the front...the thing is pure joy !!!
Sounds like an adventure, Pitt you hadn't made a vlog. As for the US trip please look into keeping safe, I've seen a few folk talking about their experiences on the road over there and compared with Australia, I'd say it's more of a risk, more cars on the road, more lazy inconsiderate drivers etc etc
Thank you. So enjoyed seeing this. You both are so inspiring. My husband and I took our trikes down to Saint Augustine to get out of the Michigan winter. The cobblestone forced us to slow down to take in the sights and put us front row for our own unique history tour. So great to find this new way to be in the world on our trikes and the treasures they have unlocked. I have knee and neck issues and my husband has back and hand issues and this is our physical therapy/rehab. It’s working. Keep inspiring with your beautiful creations. Kudos to you. That is quite an accomplishment there.
Thanks very much for watching, Shweetie! As sunny as California is supposed to be, it's freezing and snowing here in the northern California foothills right now, so I could do with a trip to warmer climes as well! Great to hear that you and your husband found your way to trikes and that they're working out so well for you! Never underestimate the healing powers of getting out and pedaling! :)
Interesting video. Great hearing your thoughts on the trikes. I hope you and your families are okay given the current catastrophic fires raging through areas of CA. Take care Cheers from Canberra Australia
Hey, Ian! We’re lucky in that we’re up in Northern California and those fires are down south, so thankfully they’re nowhere near us. We do get our fair share of fires up here but so far nothing like those fires currently burning near Los Angeles. Thanks for watching and checking in!
I own many 2 wheel Bents. Also a CT Trail. Riding experience is amazing. Getting it in and out of my apartment door and building is a trip. Going to buy a small Dolly to wheel it in and out. Hope that does the trick
Apartments can certainly be tricky. I know someone that lives in a small condo, who has a bike stashed in every corner and, apparently, a very patient wife. :)
From Denmark: Thx for taking us along on your sunny tour. Last summer I shifted from my 2 wheeler Koga bike + Ziflex mono wheel trailer to an ICE Sprint FS 20" (47 mm Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires) Trike with same trailer in tow. I am very satisfied with the trade off. I smiled when you mentioned that motorised vehicles gave you a wide berth. I had the same pleasant experience too on my 4 months summer tour in South Denmark.
Thanks for watching, Ben! I think you have a much better cycling infrastructure over there in Denmark, but it’s good to know the drivers are giving you more space on the trike! Do the drivers there generally respect the right of cyclists to be on the road? Over here they seem to think we’re just getting in their way. :)
@@bikestrikesrazors Yes, I will say that 99% of the drivers are cyclists too or at least have been or have children/family members who cycle every day. So there a kind of symbiosis there between cyclists and motorists. Let me say that in and around medium sized-big cities the biking infrastructure is excellent, biking lanes everywhere, but when you take the small roads outside the cities, you will be using the same road as motorists. The funny thing I noted too was that, even some motorists on opposite traffic will either hold to their right side, as far as they can, or even stop all together to let me pass by. Then, we great each other, with a friendly gesture and a smile. I joke about the extra safety a Trike has given me, tell my 2 wheels bicycling friends, that "maybe the reason why the motorists are so careful, giving me a wide berth, is that they think I am a disabled person, driving a special need tricycle...". You know there are very few Trikes in Denmark. When I stop to rest, even when I drove the 2 wheeled bike + trailer, it has happened many times that a motorist man or woman will stop and ask if everything is OK, if I needed any help. People are very friendly and open in Denmark. We do care for each other. Have a good day and keep on Triking! P.S. By the way I am 80 years old and I have 65 kg gear with me when I go on tour mid April to mid October. No EL Assist. Sleep in Shelters or tent, sometimes in paying Camping Grounds in my tent with tarp extension, foldable chair, foldable tabouret and foldable table and a solar charger-power banks, so I am self sufficient when it comes to energy needs.
@@benazeddine5255 Very nice, Ben! Keep up the good work! I hear you about folks thinking you may be handicapped while riding a trike. Not too long ago, my brother and I were taking our trikes up a local mountain (Mt. Diablo) when we were passed by a couple on road bikes who kept telling us what an inspiration we were. I couldn't figure out what they were talking about, but when we caught up to them later at a rest area, and stood up and walked over to a water fountain, they looked shocked that we could walk. Hey, if it's going to get cars to give me a wider berth, I don't care what they think. :) I'm going to have to get over Denmark with a bike or trike one of these days. Sounds like a great place to ride!
@@bikestrikesrazors You are welcome and I will be glad to show you the good trails, the Shelters to use for free, most of them have toilets and running drinkable water close by and are situated in scenic spots and beaches. Take care-
Thanks for that great ride. What I liked most is you seemed to find a 100 mile ride that was down hill out and back. Only in California. Do I sound jealous?? Be well and stay safe, bf
Hi Bill and thanks for watching! I think we spent more time filming on the downhills. :) The first half of the ride was pretty flat, but at mile 75, we had about 1500 ft of climbing before the final downhill. :)
Great video and impressive ride. I do a century ride once a month up here on Cape Cod in either my Catrike 559 or my 700. It is so much more comfortable than a road bike. You get no sympathy for the cold start morning from me. I just rode Cape Cod Canal this morning in 30-36 degrees, wind, snow flurries and light rain. Trikes make it easier. Heading to Florida next week for four months to escape the crummy weather. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Have a wonderful holiday season.
Hey, Mark! You have a great holiday season as well! I can't imagine riding in those temperatures on a regular basis. And with the addition of snow flurries and rain, I can see why you're going down to Florida! Enjoy the warmth! :)
@@bikestrikesrazors thanks. It is really time to get out of here. I’ve been gutting it out everyday in fleece lined waterproof suit, fleece compression underclothing, two pairs of socks, ski mask etc. de-rating Tuesday. I will send some sunshine to the folks up north!
Spent the entire weekend watching your videos like this, and the entire time by big dog was watching with me and turning to me like "can we go do that now?" 😂 sorry boy. Gotta wait till we can afford a trike...soon though, soon. Least I know he's down for it lol. This might be my new favorite channel
Thanks very much for watching, Ravin! If you're lucky, your dog will behave while being pulled in a trailer. Larry won't. He just barks until you take him out. That's why I have to ride with him on top of me. :)
@@bikestrikesrazors oh solmon is a sled dog so he'll be running next to the trike..or pulling it 🤣 We have a lot of work to do to make sure that he doesn't pull it.
Always enjoy your videos. We live in Placerville. We have ridden AMR bike path for many years. Never did the Davis and back ride. I’m 76 and transitioned to a terra trike 2 yrs ago after a hip replacement. My longest ride on the trike has been the foxy fall out of Davis. Looking forward to the tour of Napa valley next year.
Beautiful ride!! I'm glad to see you rode mostly trail and lightly traveled roads. Good to see motorists giving a wide berth. I stay off roads and ride gravel and paved trail. Great video
Hey, Debbie! Yep, we’re lucky we have such extensive trail systems here such that we can take a ride this long mostly staying off busy roads. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful tour! thanks for taking us along. The "Mean Streets of West Sacramento" didn't look too mean... unless maybe you didn't film the meaner ones. ;-)
LOL! No, they're not that mean, but that does give me an idea for another video...Riding a recumbent trike through Oakland! It'll be interesting to see how long we can ride before getting "trike-jacked". :)
I used to live in Oakland just avoid the streets with active shooting going on ... the guys standing on the street corners are really friendly always asking if you need anything.
Hi guys, I'm glad to see you, a wonderful walk, I wasn't going to eat after 18 today, but your burgers caused me a gastronomic fit, I went to the kitchen and did my dirty work) thank you for the video, great music!
You have the best most information on trikes than most video s . Keep up the great work Last year I bought a cat trike Villager. Last week I bought a cat trike Dumont full suspension. I will let my son and grandson ride the other trikes.
Been on the American River Trail around Folsom/Nimbus any number of times but never knew about the Humbug Willow Creek Trail. Going to have to work that into the ride. Thanks so much for the video.
Thanks for watching, Patrick! The Humbug-Willow Creek trail is a beautiful ride and can be reached by just jumping off the American River Trail. You'll love it!
Steve!! That was the day we shot this video! Told ya we were trying to do a hundred miles, and we managed to just make it before sundown (I remember you told us we should have enough light). I credit that break we took talking to you with allowing my knees to recover back to one hundred percent! See you out on the trail!
Great ride gents. I lived in Socal for a few years and really miss In-N-Out Burger, my mouth was watering. I recently bought a used Catrike 700 race trike and I'm really enjoying it. It's very quick and generally I pass every biker on the bike trail. I find riding the trike so much easier on my body than a diamond frame bike.
You guys have great bike paths there I love it this is my first time looking at your video it makes me wan to go buy a trike and go for a long rids God bless you guys.
Wow! Max I ever did was 65 miles and I couldn't wait to get out of the trike. Main issues were numb feet and butt. It gets hard to keep the circulation going. Possibly could have gone 100 miles but would have been a miserable and joyless grind. Kudos to you two!
Oh, yeah, Abdul- There's always a point with a long ride where it becomes a miserable, joyless grind. The secret is to keep smiling so they can't see how miserable you are. :)
I loved the video, it was as though I was in a trance, I couldn't take my eyes off the video, it was so relaxing, & I loved the choices of the music you picked & used for the making of this video, I used to ride for miles on a regular 10 speed bike, & I always enjoyed it, but I always ended up with a sore OMG sore ass, 😂🤣😂😂🤣, I've always, wanted a 3 wheeler trike bike, no, I've always dreamed of owning my own 3 wheeler trike bike, but being on permanent disability, it doesn't allow you to enjoy the finer things in life so I guess I'll just keep watching others & enjoying & living my dream, watching them on UA-cam, thank you guys, this was so relaxing, like I said, I couldn't take my eyes off the video & it was such it's a wonderful video, if you ever run across 1 on the low low, give me a Hollar if you would please, & keep on trucken fellas, ✌️ & thank you
Absolutely excellent! Appreciate: Excellent scenic trip that was also stated as having been purely comfortable. (Very arthritic and no balance here. Can ONLY ride my recumbent trikes now.) Pro-level cyclists (seemingly rare) who also love recumbents and recumbent trikes. No loud, clanky bangy background music. Wow! 100 miles! Time spent on ride SO close to upright tour riding time (Slow motion, E-assist here, LOL.)! Also, to other viewers, incredible tours already on file by BT&R!
Hey, Gary! Thanks much for the kind words! I was surprised that our time was so close to our road bike times. Next time, we beat our road bike time! :)
Wow , good ride guys , and nice video footage , and guys are so nice and organised , It makes me want to get back out on my diamond frame , but older age and a life of hard yakka has me in pain the whole time , I think a trike is on my shopping list soon I hope . Thanks for sharing your ride. Stay safe.
Thanks for the kind words, and thanks very much for watching, Mikldude! A trike is definitely more comfortable on longer rides. If you're thinking about buying a trike, keep an eye out for used bargains on Craigslist!
Nice ride! I am envious of your bike paths. We must visit Sacramento just for those. It’s a two hour drive for a great bike trail here. (Silver Comet / Chief Ladiga)
NICE! A few years ago I rented a trike from Mikey at laid back Cycles a rode down the GAR and over to Davis for a Ride Ataxia event - so it was good to see some familiar things! Thanks! ( from Texas )
A most enjoyable video. In particular, I love the blend of the view along the way plus a lovely sound track. I always ride with music, although my sound system today is a lot nicer than it was in the past! When I was young, I was a 2 wheeled maniac, but after several years away from the sport, I'm just getting back into it with my new Catrike Dumont.
Amen, Cowboy! Love their background music here too! Too many videos have background music that stars an empty cement truck tumbling a clanky-bangy cement cinder block! Even being hearing impaired here, got to watch many videos on mute! Is homemade AND too loud "background" music an as-yet unidentified disease?!
Hi Jake and thanks for watching! This may be TMI, and we didn't show it in the video for obvious reasons, but the cold air forced many a "side of the trail" restroom break. :)
Every time I watch you guys on your trikes, it makes me think I should transition from a bike to a trike (I'm 65). But I still haven't looked into a trike, mainly because I know the cost will knock me for a loop.
Hey, Andrew! The first trikes we tried were purchased second hand through a Craiglist ad. In fact, almost all the trikes we've owned in the past twenty years were purchased used. If you do decide to give a trike a try, keep an eye out for a good used deal on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace or in the Bentrider Online classifieds. Usually, you can pick up a nice trike in excellent condition for around half the new price, but don't buy anything that looks like it was ridden hard and put away wet. There are plenty of used trikes out there in barely ridden condition, so hold out for a nice one!
69 years old here, and handicapped. Watch for trikes on Ebay too. FWIW: HUGELY easier to age on a delta planform rather than tadpole planform. Own tadpoles here too.
I was road cycling until breaking my hip at 63 yrs old. In transitioning to my Catrike, my thoughts were: some buy RVs, some go on cruises, I'm buying a trike. All things being equal I'll enjoy it for a long while.
Great video! I enjoy getting to see the trails and routes, and when I actually do ride them, I’m more confident because I’ve seen them in your videos. I always wondered how to get to the bike path on the causeway, too. Looking forward to your next video!
You should have the blinky lights on your helmet and the flag as that is far more visible. I just bought a delta trike really cheap old and obviously not used as the brake pads have no wear pattern. So good for snow, ice , patches that get in my way and yes they are reviewed as 20 mph top speed before it gets squirrely . Back to the Rans Rocket or the Giro A20 in the spring. Wish we had your bike paths up here.
Yes, more lights is always better, Bruce! Delta trikes do have their advantages, and all trikes are better than bikes on snow and ice! :) Be careful out there in the slush!
I’m impressed with your time. My best Century time on DF many years ago was 4:50. Now it takes me that long to do fifty miles on my SprintX. Comfort is not even a fair comparison. I envy your routes (other than the cobblestones) I do have full suspension but same carbon seat as VTX and tubeless tires at 40-45 psi which really smooths things out.
Hey, Mark! Even in my best (young) days, I never would've been able to ride a century in anywhere near a time like that! Believe me, there are times when I envy your full suspension. Maybe if I can find space for another trike! :)
@@bikestrikesrazors Those were good ol days. Lots of drafting speedy pace lines. Never would have made that kind of time otherwise. I did fifty last weekend with 1500 riders “Cache Valley Gran Fondo”. People were passing me the last ten miles who had finished 100. Oh well. Nothing hurts at the end of the day.
@@markrobinson891 You need to find another trike to draft! Rich and I form a mini-paceline on the VTX's every time we ride, and the draft one trike gets from another is even more pronounced than one road bike from another. If we could find six relatively fast trikers, that would be a wild paceline! :)
Congratulations 🎈🎉 I’m sure you will have a faster time with warmer weather. I know we travel much slower when its in the 40’s. We have only ridden once or twice in the 30’s and never below that. Today is our first break from the rain and snow for a while. Hopefully we can get a short ride in after some housework. Take care and thanks for sharing.
Hey, Dan! Almost immediately after we took this ride, the really miserable weather hit here, and we've had rain for days now. I can't imagine riding when the temps are lower than the 30's. The 30's were bad enough for me. :)
@@bikestrikesrazors our Spring rain lasted until late June this year. I’m going to try a bike stand with resistance I found at Goodwill. I’m going to watch trike riding videos while I pedal. The only bad part is my trike’s computer sensor is on the front left wheel. I plan to just time my “rides.”
Hey guys! Nice ride, 100 miles l haven't riddin that far with my Cattrike 559 close but not cagar . l have a 65 mile knee, but I'm still having the best time 😎🌴🐊I'll take that IN AND OUT double trouble before a Power Bar every time🍔🍟😋Thanks for sharing💫
Hey, Douglas! Both my knees were feeling it by mile 65, but we wound up taking a long, unplanned break around that time, talking to another recumbent rider along the trail, and thankfully, given time, the knees recovered and didn't bother me the rest of the ride. Hurting knees are the one thing that scares me on a long ride- Feels like if you keep pushing them, something's going to permanently "go".
If you want more room in the lane, mount a chain tube Horizontally on the back of the seat frame, Make sure it is zipped with a slight bend (to act as friction) and insert a short flag pole (just long enough to poke out the right side of the tube) This flag pole and flag can be adjusted to push traffic further away from your left side.. I use to get buzzed, now they give huge amounts of room... I think that traffic/trucks think we are narrow bicycles, having a the horizontal flag extending an extra 1.5 feet on the left, makes you look wider and people notice you.. Cheers.
Finally! A UA-cam producer who knows how to build a beautiful sound track! Excellent, gentlemen. I ride my trike every (non-inclement) day. None of my trail or road bikes ever gavew me this much pure joy.
Thanks very much for the kind words, Amphictyon! I think that if more cyclists had the opportunity to try a trike, you'd see lots more trikers out there! Ride on! :)
Come to Iowa Ragbraii ride. I did the ride across Iowa on my Bacchetta 26 recumbent. The difference between bikes...I look for shade to stand in while others on road bikes look for a shady bench to sit on. That recumbent seat is fantastic for long rides. 🙂
So happy when you took your flag off Rich , it was driving me a little nuts lol , I mean you bought one of the most expensive trikes out there and a lot of why it's expensive is all the engineering going into the Aero-d . I wondered if Joe could feel it when he was riding behind , it sure is nice seeing you guys get out in the winter , it's a hard thing here in Seattle because it rains so much, winter rides are rare and unplanned. I know we talked about this before , but I sure would like to see you try a wheel cover or disc on the rear and see what your impressions are , I've gone full Aero and have covers on the front wheels inside and outside surface and now sporting a trispoke carbon fiber rear wheel from Ican , rear wheel alone made a big difference not just that it didn't slow down as much the thing I noticed is it's much easier to pedal as you arnt hitting the air with and egg beater . People think just about passing thru the wind and discount or don't think at all how much resistance comes from spokes churning. Great videos Guys you should be a sponsored channel . By far you guys are my favorite Trike Documentors.
Hi Jason! I much prefer riding "sans" flag, but the roads on the early part of the ride required as much visibility as possible (if just to make me feel better). The length I cut my flagpole causes some crazy oscillations of the flag. Reminds me of a fishing lure. I will eventually put some wheel covers on the front and when I wear that back wheel out, I'll be looking into one of those trispoke carbon wheels. Something to look forward to! :)
I could not see any problems with cars. It seemed very safe. Even when it was a bike lane, it was quite wide. I often feel much safer in a trike or a velomobile even when there is no bike lane. Very nice tour with several occations when riding on parc like bike paths. 😅😅😅 Happy riding !
The street traffic that day was much lighter than I expected. It was early Sunday morning, so I guess everyone was still asleep! You are absolutely correct- Drivers do seem to stay further away from trikes. I haven't had a chance to try one yet, but I imagine drivers would really be freaked out by a velomobile! :) Happy riding!
I have not yet made the upgrade to either trikes or velos, but last year I did get my first recumbent and I love the reaction I get from drivers here in Arkansas, I went from getting a sliver of the road and being passed at full speed to now most folks give me the entire lane if possible and slow down to see what I am, I have no bike lanes here, so despite being lower down to the ground, I end up feeling alot safer myself
Laidback Cycles has a trike "Community Ride". Not sure how often they do it, but it looks like they have a big turnout. There was a Sacramento Recumbent riders club that would take night rides on the ARBT, but not sure if they're still around. There also used to be a big trike get together once a year here, but they haven't done it in a few years. I think the Laidback cycles ride is the only thing local these days.
Hey, Evan! We normally would never start a ride that early because of those low temperatures, but we had to catch the limited sunlight, and I thought, "How bad can it be?". I was riding the first ten miles with one hand tucked under my armpit (kept switching hands) while my nose froze off. If I would've been better prepared with long fingered gloves and a balaclava (both of which I had sitting home in a drawer), it would've been much more bearable. :)
@@1a2b3c4. They did a really good job on Front Street making it look like it did in the 1850's. The real street that was there is now underground (they had to build up the street because of river flooding). They give tours of the streets still there underground.
Once again, love the documentation of the trip. Temps out there are much more than ours today (14-21)degrees at full sun. That is on the east Coast. 51 degrees by Sunday. That was quite the ride. Perhaps the big rig drivers thought the recumbents were for handicapped drivers. Ergo, they gave you wife berth. Don't you have that three foot margin between vehicle and bike/recumbent riders?😊
Thanks, Mihkhail! I’m thinking that the truck drivers are indeed thinking we’re handicapped which is helping to get them to give us extra space. Yep, we do have that three foot law out here but you’ll likely never see a driver giving someone on a road bike extra space and I doubt that law is effectively enforced. It would take quite a series of circumstances for a police officer to be riding behind a car when it comes too close to a cyclist.
I remember Kings! That was the place with the Lotto posters on the walls, right? Speaking of great restaurants that are no longer around, I was wondering why you ate at In-N-Out and not at Murder Burger when you reached Davis. Then I did some research and learned Redrum Burger closed in 2019.
Hey, Jim! Yep, we spent an afternoon at Kings with you, Rich, me and I think Steve and Jeff. Was everyone there? Yeah, unfortunately Murder Burger couldn't survive when all kinds of competition popped up in that area. Not only do you have the In' n Out, but now there's all kinds of fast food right over the freeway there. One of the sad things happening in America- All the mom & pop places are closing shop because there's no way to compete with forty Chicken McNuggets for $9.50 or two Whoppers for $6.00. :(
The trail in this video, The American River Trail, is rare even over here in the States. Not many trails over here that are this nice, and I’ve looked. :)
I have 2 recumbent trikes. One is an all terrain, the other a Catrike expedition. I will never go back to a bike. Love some in and out burger when I get out west.
The Expedition is a beautiful trike, Martin! Someday I'll get the chance to try an all-terrain trike. They look like a lot of fun! Oh, yeah- In-N-Out burger makes any ride better. :)
Great ride and a terrific video. Well done. I’m considering a trike myself and have been for some time. Was your time you mentioned for this ride rolling time or total time including stops?
Hey, Alan! The time stated was actual rolling time only. We weren't trying to go fast, and as you can probably tell from the video, we were pretty much just taking our time and not pushing the pace on this ride. We have to try this again to see if we can beat out our road bike times! Thanks for watching!
Really any trike would work on a rail trail (I’m thinking decomposed granite) with the codicil that I’d equip the trike with wider tires. I’m thinking that, depending on how rough the surface is, you may also want to consider a trike with some kind of suspension to smooth out the ride. Good luck and have fun!
Freaking out drivers because you are on trikes is tight! - But I fully agree. I almost always get more room and awareness from drivers on the trike than on the bike. It's just getting used to seeing the hubcaps rolling by that is the hurdle.
Hey, Glenn! Yeah, I don't think there's any doubt that you're safer on the trikes, with the cars swinging way-wide, but in your mind, it's easy to imagine what'll happen if you go "under" a car. Those hubcaps are a constant reminder. :)
I have a Terra Trike Rambler All Terrain. This trike eats cobble stones for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It has 24X2.35 low pressure tires. Only trikes that have issues are ones with high pressure road tires.
QUESTION: Based on the quick shadow I saw, it looks like you are using a hand-held go-pro type camera. Correct? Really well done video, excellent choice of music. I like the voice-over and being candid about traffic. 😊
Hey, Dale! Yep, it's a small Osmo Action camera, first generation. It does an amazing job, especially with the built-in electronic stabilization. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching!
Looks like fun. I'd like to try one, but the poor visibility sure seems like an issue to me. I guess you get used to sitting 2' feet off the ground after a while.
Yep, you get used to it pretty quickly, Glenn. A lot of trikers like to use tall flags to add visibility. I usually just go with a blinky and stay out of heavy traffic.
I had a Greenspeed GT-3 and my brother still has a GTO. Greenspeed makes (or made) a great trike! Rich and I are usually riding ICE VTX trikes in these videos, which are pretty expensive, but we were lucky enough to find both of them on the used market. Thanks for watching!
Hi guys, thanks for the excellent impressions of your area. I am riding an ICE Sprint trike. Security is an important aspect for me here in Hamburg/Germany too. In 2020 I had an accident with a car at Nantes/France which fortunately was not too bad. Meanwhile I am preparing my trips with the dedicated bike navigation software komoot which is quite common here in Europe. How do you proceed? Do you have anything like Komoot in the US or do you ride without any preparation? I would be interested to make a longer trip in the US but I a bit worried of the traffic and the huge trucks in your area. Best regards
Hey, Martin! Glad to hear that your accident wasn't that bad! Most of the riders over here use something called "Ride with GPS" to plan their long rides. Personally, I kind of enjoy just getting lost and finding my way, but on a really long ride in unfamiliar territory, that's not going to work all that well. :) It's possible to plan a trip on less traveled roads. If you're thinking about doing something like that, I'd suggest heading over to the Bentrider Online trike forum and asking those folks if they've ever done any trike-touring over here, and what routes they'd recommend. Thanks for watching and good riding over there in Germany!
I enjoyed this video. Do you not take a lunch with you. I live in Manitoba and when we go snowmobiling, we pack a lunch quite often if we plan on going about 80 mile ride. I now have a recumbent and looking forward to next summer and riding. Gerald Dybish
Hey, Gerald! Yes, we often do take a lunch with us. On our normal ride now, we ride a sort of figure eight, so in the middle of the ride we wind up back at our van, so it's convenient to have a cooler in there so we can keep everything cold or hot, depending on the time of year. If we're not riding a route that takes us back to the van for lunch, we'll stuff the bags with food, and sometimes make a large hoagie style sandwich, which fits nicely in a bottle cage. :) Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I would think riding a hard tail that long would be hard on the back. I have a fully suspended catrike which I think it would be better on the back side. Again, thank you for this
Thanks very much for watching, Darren! Surprisingly, the VTX is a very comfortable trike, although not as comfortable as your fully suspended trike! Good triking!
Great ride. Now I want to come explore Sacramento one day. What speed to you average when riding like this on your trikes? I went from a mountain bike to an Ice Adventure HD because of back issues. I found my cruising speed dropped about 4 mph. When riding by myself that is fine but when riding with my wife I swap out the front boom with a motorized boom so I can keep up with her and not kill myself.
Hey, Brandon! The VTX is a fast trike, in fact it's the only trike I've tried (and I've tried a lot) that allows me to maintain my road bike speeds on a trike- at least on the flats. When we do our normal sixty-mile ride on this trail, we treat the first thirty-miles as a time trial and kill ourselves to maintain speeds of between 18mph and 21mph. That's just about the same speed we'd be going on our road bikes. After that, we limp through the last thirty miles in the hills, cursing ourselves for pushing so hard earlier. For this hundred-mile ride, we intentionally backed off the speed and tried to keep the whole ride at about 17mph. Made for a much nicer ride, especially through the final miles. :) That Adventure HD is a beautiful trike, and with that E-assist, speed shouldn't be a problem! Thanks for watching!
@@bikestrikesrazors It's the same here in the UK with on

Background music is awesome! Brings back memories of classic western movies :) Restful video. Much appreciated.
Thanks, Curt, and thanks very much for watching!
Wow, you guys have an awesome bike path system there.
Great video. Thanks.
Thanks! Yep, we’re lucky to have such nice trails here.
Your video just showed up on my feed, so as a catrike expedition rider who switched from a perfectly good high end cannondale 15 years ago, I thought I'd watch. This was probably the best trike video I've seen so far. I really liked it. Those Ice trikes look really smooth!
Thanks very much for watching, RD! The Catrike Expedition is a beautiful trike! See you out on the trail! :)
I would come watch this again JUST for the music. Fantastic add to a great video!
Hi Doren and thanks for watching! The music is by Aaron Kenney, a very talented composer!
Thanks for being so considerate! It's scary out there! 😍😍😍
That sounds like a blast, Traveling Man! Now it’s time to plan the next tour! :)

Have you met the two Romanians Radu and Irina?
Sounds like an adventure, Pitt you hadn't made a vlog. As for the US trip please look into keeping safe, I've seen a few folk talking about their experiences on the road over there and compared with Australia, I'd say it's more of a risk, more cars on the road, more lazy inconsiderate drivers etc etc
Thanks for a great tour! You guys are inspiring me to get back out there and ride.
Thanks for watching, James! We were lucky we were able to get out on that ride, it's been raining almost non-stop since we filmed that. :)
Hi brother I am 77 years old but not empid my dreams I love the Unit State and I want to go to Alaska next year by by
I am picking up a Greenspeed Magnum XL later this week and live in the Fair Oaks area...might run into you guys out there!
For sure! I'll keep an eye out for you! I also have a Greenspeed GTO, which is kind of the predecessor of the Magnum.
Interesting video.
Great hearing your thoughts on the trikes.
I hope you and your families are okay given the current catastrophic fires raging through areas of CA.
Take care
Cheers from Canberra Australia
Hey, Ian! We’re lucky in that we’re up in Northern California and those fires are down south, so thankfully they’re nowhere near us. We do get our fair share of fires up here but so far nothing like those fires currently burning near Los Angeles. Thanks for watching and checking in!
I always look forward to getting a new trike video from you guys! Happy Saturday!
Happy Saturday, Commander, and thanks very much for watching!
It looked like a lot of fun. Thanks for the effort of sharing this experience.
Thanks very much for watching, WOS!
You guys are clean-shaven men of action! You ride hard, and you ride fast. Gorgeous!
Hey Geoff! The "Action Men" aren't quite as "hard and fast" as they used to be. HA! I do still have the T-Bone, but mostly ride the trike these days.
Take care-

Buy once and be forever happy!😉

I was road cycling until breaking my hip at 63 yrs old. In transitioning to my Catrike, my thoughts were: some buy RVs, some go on cruises, I'm buying a trike. All things being equal I'll enjoy it for a long while.
Great video! I enjoy getting to see the trails and routes, and when I actually do ride them, I’m more confident because I’ve seen them in your videos. I always wondered how to get to the bike path on the causeway, too. Looking forward to your next video!

The music you used went well with the very fine video. Thank you for the post, very nice scenery!
Cheers.
Good idea! Thanks for the comment!
Ride on! :)
OMG !!! I wish I had a trail like that where I live...........that was nice.
I'm pretty lucky to live fairly close to such a nice trail. :)
Grande pedal. Bela natureza. Ar puro e paisagens. Ciclovias boas. Maravilhoso
Muito obrigado por assistir!
Come to Iowa Ragbraii ride. I did the ride across Iowa on my Bacchetta 26 recumbent. The difference between bikes...I look for shade to stand in while others on road bikes look for a shady bench to sit on. That recumbent seat is fantastic for long rides. 🙂
I've been thinking about Ragbrii for some time! Might be time to give it a try! :)
Nice wish we had all the trails and cycleways in the UK.
Yeah, but you guys gave us all the best Rock bands. :)
I lived in Rocklin and worked in Rancho Cordova. I miss those Winters being in Chicago now.
And I was complaining about the cold out here! :) Thanks for watching Crew Chief!
@@bikestrikesrazors I just got a 2023 CaTrike Expedition. Glad I found your channel!
@@JeepWrangler1957 Very cool trike! Have fun!
Hey NICE TRIP !!! I've been curious about the American River Bike Trail.... Currently riding Easy Rider Recumbent here in Santa Cruz , CA
You have a great trail down there, also- The Monterey Bay Trail is amazing! Thanks for watching!
Lake Tahoe is amazing. I haven't tried it on a recumbent yet . BTW your choice of music was great .
@@davidtreichelpppj5304 Hi David! I agree, that area is amazingly beautiful!
Great trip 😊
I live in Roseville, had no idea you were this close. Do you know if the area has a recumbent bike/trike club?
Laidback Cycles has a trike "Community Ride". Not sure how often they do it, but it looks like they have a big turnout. There was a Sacramento Recumbent riders club that would take night rides on the ARBT, but not sure if they're still around. There also used to be a big trike get together once a year here, but they haven't done it in a few years. I think the Laidback cycles ride is the only thing local these days.
36 degrees...Sheesh....my wife and I don't go out if it is below 55 degrees. We are Southern California kids...Good on ya for doing the century.
When you entered Sacramento, with the music I was imagining I was in a cowboy movie 🎥🍿🎥
That does sound like cowboy movie music, doesn't it, Mario! Maybe we should've been riding horses. :)
@@bikestrikesrazors
Oh, it wasn't the music it was my imagination, ahahaha
@@1a2b3c4. They did a really good job on Front Street making it look like it did in the 1850's. The real street that was there is now underground (they had to build up the street because of river flooding). They give tours of the streets still there underground.
@@bikestrikesrazors Like an Italian Movie (Spaghetti Westerns)
When I saw the video title, I thought the ride was one person riding a standard road bike, the other on a trike. 😀
We've done rides like that, but we both took trikes on this ride. :)
Can someone please recommend a 100-mile battery recumbent tadpole trike? Thank you. 😊
I thought we were blessed with our cycle tracks here in Oz but you guys have far better path/cycle ways than we do.
@@bikestrikesrazors thanks. I’ll keep checking out your videos. They’re excellent and informative.
We have rail trails here on east coast. What trike would you recommend ? Awesome video god bless 🇺🇸🚲😎
Fantastic that the Rambler is working out for you, Benjamin! Enjoy it!
This was well done and an enjoyable ride. I just do not enjoy urban street riding. That said, I really enjoyed your experience.
Thanks very much for watching, Peter!
Best time of year to ride
That is especially apparent now that it's summer and 110 degrees over here in California! :)
Great bike trail 👍👌👍
Subbed and liked. Your gear looks expensive? I’m riding a second hand Greenspeed GT20. I started out with a Greenspeed GT1 with 16” wheels 😢 😂
Saludos Amigos buen video un abrazo desde Perú
Saludos, Ricardo! Te deseo un buen paseo por allí!
Here's a link to Ride with GPS if you'd like to check it out:

Here's a link to a video we made a while back where we discuss the sandwich I mentioned!

@@bikestrikesrazors Never thought about a figure eight loop. Good idea. Gerry Dybish
