A question I get a lot is how to properly apply PlastiDip to EVA foam without getting nasty textures and bubbles. So I thought it would be a good idea to make a little video about it! Hope it's helpful! :)

I finally understand what I did wrong the last time I used Plastidip! Haha! So many people don't bother showing you the mistakes! Thank you :)
Is this a kids channel ?!? I’m so confused.
Am I turned on? Is that illegal ?
The can scares me…but one should always try to overcome fears of the opportunity presents itself through our life .
Namaste 🙏🏻 y’all
Learning from mistakes is an essential step, so showing your mistakes so others can see what correct looks like and what wrong looks like help everyone a lot! After that, we can find the range in between and strive to perfect our work. Really smart move!
I didn't know about warming the can and pretty much suck at spray painting in general (I have no patience) so I ended up with the texture you got when you sprayed too closely the first time I used PlastiDip. That being said, after watching some videos of people who use it on cars, I was able to save my project by using Paint Thinner to remove the PlastiDip in the areas where I had messed up the texture and saved my project. I definitely think that is worth mentioning!
(Thank you for your commitment to educating us all on your techniques! It is so appreciated!)
Good tip!
Did the paint thinner eat at the foam at all?
Watch The entire process in first person by the people over at dip your car on youtube. Also your first coat should only be about 50% coverage then for the next wet coats you want a 50% over lap on each spray. Now I would assume spraying anything besides metals and plastics may be a bit different but Idk havent tried it.
Warming the can causes expansion in the gas propellant ensuring good spray pressure and consistent pressure. However she failed to key each layer before painting which could result in peeling. I was a paint sprayer for 8 years including plastic coatings.
Rb What does it mean to “key each layer before painting,” if you don’t mind me asking?
even if i werent into cosplay, i would still watch these because that corgi is so darned cute!!!
WHAT!! I live in the UK and sealprime looks amazing and is like 2/3rds the price of plastidip here! Thank you sooo much!
360Effects even cheaper if you go for the brush on seal prime. the cans get expensive for big armors
Is it flexible tho ? I migh consider it if it is !
I'm glad I saw this four year old comment! I found this product on Polyprops too, might be better than Plastidip!
Did you end up using it? Was it a food product tonuse with EVA foam?
@@jack1701e I did! From memory it isn't as thick as plastidip (so may need more coats) but worked great!
This was so useful!! I am definitely going to be applying this new knowledge in my first armor cosplay! The more I watch your videos the more I feel confident in the craft!! Thank you so much!
Just start! Watching videos is one thing. Actually getting your hands dirty another.
When it comes to applying the 3-4 coats, do you let it sit the full 24 hours between coats or just until it appears dry? Wondering if the 3-4 coats should take 3-4 days or just a few hours.
I am 4 years late to this reply (but so hope I can help someone else with the answer) but on the bottle it says to wait min. 30 minutes between coats and 4 hours minimum so that it’s fully dry
It was helpful for me! My convention is in 4 days!😂
You saved my first armor project, thank you!!
I now know to heat seal before hand! I've bought all your books and will continue to always live and support Kamui cosplay!! ❤
Thank you so much! ❤️
I remember seeing this method either in your books or on Instagram and I have never done it any other way.
Thank you! My channel wouldn't be where it is without your knowledge
I bought my very first can of plasti dip today, so the timing couldn't have been better:)
I was in Walmart today and talked myself out of buying a can; I don't need it right now. When I get around to making my armor for next year's costume contest I'll pick up a couple cans. But I'm glad I watched this - I didn't know you needed to put it in warm water first.
Becky Murphy I didn't know that you have to heat seal before applying. Alot of good tips.
One day, no today, no tomorrow, but one day am gonna buy each one of your books not just for the big amount of knowledge that i will learning also for support you... Keep like that!!! 👍😆😆
Aww thanks!
Enmanuel Guzmán sane here :)
Thank you so much for this! I actually just got my EVA Foam and plastidip today for a cosplay, so this was super helpful!
Glad if it helps!
KamuiCosplay it was very helpful! I got a lot of feedback on the costume, the armor especially (: Thank you!
Just finished working with EVA foam for the first time and I'm gonna use plastidip to prime it. Perfect timeing!!💜💜
As always, your videos, tutorials and books are a blessing. I live in a place where plastidip just isn't a thing, and i'm trying other brands.
Had no clue you were German. Awesome video with perfect editing, beautiful lighting, and useful information! Good work and thank you!!
Thanks! :)
Awesome video! Fun fact, I had trouble with caulking some of my bonded areas of my wonder woman golden eagle armor project. Desperate to cover the bumps, I used plasti dip since flexbond doesn't coat over the caulk. The reason I didn't want to use plasti dip is because I was using Bennie's tutorial for the metal look which is better achieved using flexbond. But I found that the flexbond does adhere to the plastic dip! So crisis averted? I can now complete the look as intended. Yay experimenting while stuck at home 👍
Your tutorials are always helpful but this may be the best one ever. It's definitely my favorite.
I was about to plastidip my first ever pair of gauntlets but then decided to rewatch this. Thank God i did, I forgot about heating the can 😭💕 you're the best!
I searched for this video after my first attempt, and basically, I did ALL the mistakes. Thanks for being so clear. I'm glad I had the good sense to use scrap material for my test run.
I wish this video was here when i first started making my Fire Emblem armor when I went to Colossalcon this year. But now at least i learned from experience. Thanks for the video
Thanks for the video, I'm doing my 1st cosplay as Spawn in November for AWA. This was very informative and easy to follow.
great tips, I never knew about the hot water dip for the can before using.
Now you know ;)
Ahh its nice to know a uk alternative to plastidip, it’ll come in handy
Thanks to this, I know now what kind of mistakes I did. I tried to cover the whole surface when I sprayed ALL of my layers. Because I got the impression that it would look uneven if I didn´t cover everything at once. I should have sprayed in thin layers! Thank you Kamui! I hope I can now get more confidence and try out plastidip more for my further cosplay projects. Because it costs a lot, but woah... it would save so much time.
Make sure to practice a bit before though ;)
Oh so THATS what I did wrong with plasti dip. Everything.
If you want to get rid of the texture just spray with car brake cleaner when the plastic coating has just dried, this acts as a leveller and will flatten out any orange peel and make the coated surface level and then will just evaporate off.
Thanks for including Seal Prime, I always hear about PlastiDip but it's great to hear there's an alternative for those of us in the UK!
Your video was really great ! I particularly enjoyed the little animation to show the 20cm hahaha. It's not too long so it's easy to go back to just before priming your props. Thank you so much !!
I really needed this right now. THANK YOU!
Glad to help!
THANK YOU for mentioning safety use of the product! Almost nobody on UA-cam that is using the product bothers to mention it. The first time I used plasti dip the fumes burned the hairs out of my nose. I know better now. Safety first!
Thankfully it doesn't really matter if i mess up or not for the current build I'm working on. Paint and other sprays will go on top so it serves for a better effect if the plastidip becomes very textured
I just want to say thank you for your enthusiasm and expertise. You really inspire and assist in so many tutorials. I very much appreciate you.
How long do you leave it to dry in between coats? Is it 4 hours or 3?
Edit: nvm! Just realised I was reading the wrong part of the packaging lol.
Thank you bc I did the same thing!
Crystal C lol np :’D
Pleasure supporting you ive learned so much already
Thank you thank you!! Your tutorials are always so helpful, and your cosplays inspire me to work hard! I hope your having a good day!
Does leaving the can in a warm shed in the summer in the Deep South heat count as warming the can? Also I built a temp spray booth w cardboard boxes and contractor bags. I totally recommend doing
Woah, I didn't realize things could go so downhill if you don't prime properly.
Thanks, Kamui! :D
Fast tip: If you completely fuck up when applying plasti dip (like I did on my first time), don't worry! Just sand it away with some thin sand paper and start again.
I can't get enough of these tutorials. Now all you need is a lighter and a can of PlastiDip to make a flamethrower Cosplay prop.
Svetlana-"Now Let's burn all the MONEY!!!!"(from the "Where to shop in the L.A. Fashion District" video)
Wonderful lesson, thank you. I'm trying to cover a thin wire ring (like a cheap hooped earring) with a thin layer of rubber so it doesn't tear the sheer material that has to hold onto it.
Hii! I Just wanted to thank you kamui cosplay, I made a d.va gun with your tutorial and thanks to you my cosplay turned out amazing!! Thank you for being awesome! !
Glad to help! ❤️
I know this is a 3 y/o video but how long did you wait between layers? Also thank you for this tutorial, it really helped a lot :)
Thank you for the tip about placing the in the warm water. That solved my problem.
Does Plastidip fill in irregularities or does it make it more obvious?
How important is it to have a perfectly smooth project before spraying it with plastidip?
Thank you for showing mistakes. That is very helpful to give an example like that.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I am happy now I found out how to properly use it.
Great vid! About how long do you wait until you spray the next coat? The can says 30 minutes, but I was wondering if you wait that long?
I tried using plastidip on my last prop and gave up and used gesso instead because I was having too many problems with it. After watching this video, I can see where I went wrong :) I’m gonna try again!
ahhh, thank you! I didn't know there was a UK alternative to plasti dip! i might get the brush-on stuff, since i only need it for priming some big claws
Sucking the flammable vapors through certain fans, especially brushed fans, creates potential for a pretty spectacular explosion 💥
You definitely want to use a fan with blades that are seperate from the motor windings. (like a squirrel cage blower) so that your vapors ARE NOT blowing over the windings of the motor. Some types of motor create small sparks that will ignite the vapor the same way button on your gas grill or stove does.
Go watch the movie backdraft if you want an example
Good tip.
Okay but that spray booth is genius!
I needed this video about a month ago :") but thank you now I'll be able to use it a lot better for my future Cosplay for next year ^-^ you earned a new Sub
XD Thank you for the video! I had this problem a couple of days ago and finally figure out what I was doing wrong. After doing some research. But thank you again for this video. I always love and appreciate your hard work and video. Oh and Benny airbrushing. XD
When should i use plastic dip and when i don't need it? It's only gives foam shiny effect and make texstures look better or gives also more durability? By the way thank's a lot for great content :)
Könnt ihr mal ein Cosplay für Benny machen, damit man auch mal ein männliches Modell hat? Würde mich interessierenn, ob es da irgendwelchwe Unterschiede gibt, auf die man achten muss.
Ich richte es ihm aus! x)
So we are attempting our first armor piece for our niece (very simple design) with 5mm EVA foam as the base with trim and decorative scales using 2mm EVA to emulate Hiccup and Astrids dragonrider armor from How to Train Your Dragon. We were using the white plastidip
When we used Plastidip the surface ended up very bubbly and pock-marked. We had sprayed in our garage (with proper ventilation) to avoid the outdoor moisture and humidity as I've had issues with this on plastic miniatures and acrylic primer, however, the surface quality still ended up being very poor. We had also heat-sealed the foam with a heat gun a few days prior to applying the plastidip.
In addition, we have some layers of the 2mm trim foam glued along the edges of the armor plate scales peeled back and many of the scales glued on the armor surface peeled up along the scale edges. We are assuming that as the plastidip dried, it contracted and the "shrinking" cause the foam underneath to warp and peel up.
We did try to use a heat gun to reshape some of the scales and trim and then re-glued these, but the plastidip did actually start bubbing and did not look very good at all. In the mean time since we don't have time to rebuild the armor before the holidays we are trying to fix the pockmarked surface by using a thinned gesso to try and even the surface so it doesn't look as bad.
We're not quite sure what we are doing wrong, do you have idea what might have caused this and how we can avoid it in the future?
If the cosplay you were making was black, would you still bother to paint it afterwards or would you just leave it with the plastidip coating? If you needed to paint it, what type of paint and brushes would you need?
Enjoying all these tutorials!
Thanks! :)
Great video! Which one has teh more grippy/rubbery feel?
Hi. Thanks for this great video on Plastidip primer. Should help me in my cosplay projects. Do you recommend putting a clear coat after applying the paints? If yes, what brand would you recommend. Thanks! Keep the great videos coming.
Great info! Thank you. Warming the can was completely new to me!
Awesome video!. I'm beginning to make a monster hunter world bone armor from all your tips and tricks. Keep up the amazing projects!
Good luck!
Question...the step before actual 1st coat of plasticDip was to "use heat gun to heat up EVA Foam before spraying with plasticDip".
My question is...what if its a full piece (for instance an arm piece)? Do you just heat up in sections then spray and work your way around what you've built? Or individual pieces before constructed altogether, spray, then construct?
Thank you for this video!
I have 2 questions:)
1. Do you have to heat up your plastidip, if you do how do you heat it up.
2. Can I use flex bond first and then go over it with plastidip.
Thank you I hope u respond 💕
You deserve 1.000.000 subs
I'm super happy with the 200k I have!
KamuiCosplay awww
The one I use is called "Kandi dip" :3. I actually do the "super thick shiny coat" with it and when it dries it still turned out very smooth :3.
Sounds nice!
Awesome! My favorite cosplayer forever because you’re so talented and helpful!
YAY! new person. I love all paint tutorials.✌🏽 Any advice on how to prevent(as much as possible) chipping?
I am just recently learning how to make EVA foam weapons, just curious if using Flex bond is as good as Plastidip.
Thanks for all your informative videos ... they are a great help.
Hello Kammui! Can you tell us more about the paint closet? In particular, what filters do you use? How often do you change filters? What exhaust fan do you use? What is his strength? If it is not a secret, of course:)
Thank you very much for your videos and books!
Thank so much for the video!! I bought another brand because I couldn't find Plasti Dip, but I had that texture and I assumed that the product wasn't the same of Plasti Dip. I will give it another chance with your advices ❤❤❤
Hi from Northern Ireland UK. I hope you are both enjoying your new adventure in the sun.
Can you please advise me if you think this paint would work on a wooden Airsoft gun stock? Would the paint wear off with handling. Can you seal the paint
You are my go to guru! Keep making all your wonderful creations.
You're adorable and I love you. Also, thank you so much for the foam armor book, it has been a life saver.
Not quite cosplay but... QUESTION! When you make stained glass, you apply copper tape along the glass piece edges. The glass parts are then connected by soldering (60/40 lead solder) the pieces together. Over time, the solder can oxidize and look bad (and the lead oxidizing sounds dangerous to me?)
SO I was wondering! Does Plastidip stick to solder? If so, I'd like to try taping off all the glass, and spraying just the soldered edges with Plastidip!
Do you think, the Plastidip would stick to the solder, KamuiCosplay? +Mogrymillian
Thanks for your time!
Oh hell yeah, I was literally looking for this kind of video last night so this is a life saver 😭
Glad to help!
I prefer the flexipaint. I love that product
And no nasty fumes :D
It's great yeah
Thanks for making this!!! I've been having so much trouble with plastidip recently.
Hope it helps!
Very, very helpful !! Thanks for this one !
A nice european alternative is the Seal Prime by cosplayclues. The black is a super nice matte one and its dry after 5 minutes:)
Hey !! Super video !! 😁😁Do you have to use many bottles to make an armor ??
Depends on the armor! ;)
Okay came to UA-cam to learn more about the product picked this video because of the pretty girl !
Love the videos. I was wondering if you and Benne were going to do one on beginner airbrushing. Bennes. Work is amazing :) as if yours.
Good idea! :)
spraying close can be a cool texture for some costumes 👌
Yes, if you want that look it can be a good trick!
KamuiCosplay i think it looks pretty cool tbh 😊
Hi there.....i have a question......you said that the can must be put into hot water before you start dipping...but what about between coats????when you finish one coat must it be placed into hot water again....until the coat dries????or there is no problem at all???thanks!!!👍👍👍
Following this right now for my Thanos armor. This is the best!
I just needed this! Thank u! Great timing
Do you use the plastic dip after you filled in seams with cosplay foam or some other filler? Or do you fill rams holes etc before the plasti dip? What do you use to fill? Cosplay foam? Quik seal?
You should clear the nozzle after spraying, not before, so the paint doesn't dry in the nozzle.
Она такая хорошенькая❤😂 и с юмором, и все что делает оч интересно. С удовольствием смотрю и слушаю👍🏻😁
I love your helpful videos- If I may ask how many bottles would you reccomend for a full armour since I am quite new to this >_
Totally depends on the costume... :-/
Loved the video , very informative as always!
Might i suggest a future video or book?
Could you go into detail on how spray painting foam/worbla with a gloss, mate, chrome, flat paints?
Ive got the hang of making things and already have a few props that need painting but im just not that confident in painting them by hand and spray painting.
Thank you again for all your advice and books.
What would you use to paint on top? Is spray paint okay? Or it it better to get a plastidip in the colour of choice if you like the effect already if that makes sense, thanks for the tips I was suggested to use for my next costume and wasn't clear on how to use it
What happens if you spray it on plastic? Does it peel off? And if so, how (small bits? Big bits? Does it come off like latex?)? I guess I should tell you what I want to make so you understand me better..
I want to make Boba Fett's helmet and armor but in 3d printed parts and wanted to know if I can use plastidip on it for the texture... Thank you!
Good info. Your pupper is adorable.
I love your videos! But I can i use contact cement on primer?
If I notice a visible seam/valley after plastidipping, can I fill the seam with kwik seal and go over it with more plastidip?
If you heat the armor after you made it and waited days or weeks before plastic dip do you have to reheat again
Do I have to heat up my foam before spraying on plasti dip? I’m asking because I don’t have a heat gun.
I have sprayed without heal sealing before and it still came out smooth. Heat sealing the foam makes it easier but so long as you go slow and steady you can still get a nice smooth finish without it!
