  • Travis Christofferson is a top science writer focused on metabolism. His latest book is “Ketones: The Fourth Fuel: Warburg to Krebs to Veech, the 250 Year Journey to Discover the Fountain of Youth.”
    This book is a fascinating expedition behind the thinkers and experimentalists that were foundational to our modern understanding of how our bodies produce and utilize energy.
    Geoff and Travis discuss the life and work of key scientists including Otto Warburg (Nobel Laureate), Hans Krebs (Nobel Laureate), and Richard Veech and how their work wove together to form our current understanding of ketosis and metabolism.
    This is a great one to listen to learn about the foundational insights behind the Warburg Hypothesis, the Krebs Cycle, and the biochemical redox advantage of ketosis.

    Comorbidities of Covid19 really pushed me into examining the benefits of ketosis and different forms of fasting. The science and benefits are amazing to me! To anyone considering these options in their normal daily life, do the research. There's lots of it out there! Great episode!

    Listening to recorded interview. I became acquainted with Thomas Seyfried when I was diagnosed with colon cancer and haven’t looked back!! I’m now motivated to rereading his book!! Thank you.

    Hi there: HVMN;
    you will be absolutely amazed at this: some of us come to these broadcasts; to LISTEN to the person being interviewed ......... how extraordinary; bizarre, even .......
    So please; please; you have 2 ears; and one mouth; please if you ask a question; practice making each question as short as possible;
    then do go very quiet; let the person speak; please
    look at 7mins30; we have to listen to your rambling; till 9mins30; please refine the art of short questions; and silence; all best wishes

    He randomly read a Seyfried book on kindle. Amazing. I read it too, not an easy read, but it was years after Taubes and the rest of the regulars.

    In an interview the interviewed person should talk more than the Interviewer.

      Gary Cohen on the Biohacker's channel is the best, for letting the guest speak.

    Important remark about Sato et al 1995. The only MEASURED variables were: pH, HCO3, 31P NMR spectra, work efficiency and O2 consumption. ALL redox data were estimated using calculations which assume things we now know work differently (link below). ATP production is highly flexible and far from being an exact science. In other words, Veech's proposed mechanisms are more speculative than solid rock empirical observations. In fact, also from Sato 1995, efficiency improvements came from less O2 consumed and not through more ATP produced www.pnas.org/content/117/5/2412

      good point. Travis is also dead wrong on praising useless D.Sinclair ramblings on fake 'reversing aging' and equally useless epigenetic clocks by Horvath etc. Yet book by Travis 'Tripping over the truth' was revolutionary for me when published years ago. Especially sad is his bending the knee to cancer-industrial complex on agreeing for ADJUNCT kenone therapy for cancer, which means allowing to kill patients w chemo at the same time. Ketone++ therapy must be tried as MAIN, not adjunct - then compare with chemo as see which is better.

    I have very high ketone reading 9.95 on breath - Likely cause eating garlic during keto state. Is the fact that garlic blocks acetone metabolism a potential heath issue? - Can I poison myself eating garlic whilst doing keto? - I have read Ketones The Fouth Fuel, I am going to give the garlic a miss for the moment - Are there any more foods that could be dangerous whilst in keto?

    Everyone assumes that DKA (Diabetic KetoAcidosis) is run-way ketosis. Someone really needs to inspect that knee-jerk assumption. Being a type1 and having some experience with this, I find it to be a painfully naive assumption based on very little study and mere correlation.
