Thank you Barkha and Sashi Tharoor. A well balanced interview from both sides.
I understand Mr. Tharoor’( the experienced diplomat and politician) perspective.
Leaders or Kings & Queens or CEO’s are required to take firm and! tough decisions in tough circumstances! That is part of the job and the perks that go with it!
My view: Un-ban the book. In fact, un-ban all books.
The State cannot behave like a wimp , it has a duty to protect its citizenry; even if it is just one against a mob.
Macron took a bold step in the Samuel Paty matter.
Denmark refused to budge. Middle Eastern countries with all their oil and money, can be sensitive to matters within their borders. They need to be told off if they dare to interfere in our matters.
A school principal cannot say that he/she will rather not deal with a mob of bullies(ruffian students that prey on the weak) than to deal with them sternly as per the rules of the school/college.
If the State does not implement the Rule of Law with all the force at its disposal then it is just encouraging bullies and mobs. Governments are creating a Frankensteinian situation by not dealing with the mobs. The more the govt. appeases them the bigger and wilder they will get.
Not one of the speakers anywhere , while condemning the act, has had the guts to call out the primitive ideology that is the root-cause of generating all the hatred and brainwashing in its adherents. It is time to stop pretending, playing Nero while the world burns, being an apologist anymore; enough is enough! It is time to publicly admit that there are deeply disturbing things in the world- wide political party called I-slam (which masquerades as a “peaceful re-lie-gion” much like a wolf in sheep clothing) and its dogmatic ideology contained in its manifesto called the Also-ran.
Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue is a 2015 book collaboration between American author Sam Harris and British activist Maajid Nawaz.

What wasn't discussed in this interview is the spectacular failure of the education system that should have ingrained values of tolerance and open-mindedness for day one of the education of a child. Our incredibly dysfunctional education system is the root cause. There is no shortcut to the systemic fixing and rebuilding of society from the ground up. @Ramchandran Kannan; Hindutva is not kalpanic; It is a real threat as they recently violently attacked with lathis unarmed Christians during Sunday service. These cowards do not have the courage to disturb the Muslims praying on the busy road meant for traffic. What else can a civilized modern society expect from the Hindutva that worships KATILS and KALPANIC devi and devtas? Like Sri Ram murdered Ravan and Khumbhkaran with the help of a monkey named Hanuman that failed to pluck out a plant growing at the foot of a parvat, yet the monkey broke apart the parvat. LOL. Hanuman, the monkey that evolved without any wings, is claimed to fly across Bharat carrying the parvat, Hilarious and aeronautically absurd, to light a fire to Lanka, committing the world's first genocide. Krishna, popularly known as 'Makhan chore,' lusted at the women bathing at the Yamuna ghats, frequently hiding their clothes to lust longer as a pervert. Krishna encouraged and personally assisted the Pandavas as the charioteer in MASS-MURDERING 100 Kaurava brothers to resolve their family feud over an inheritance. Katil Shiva beheaded his OWN son and replaced it with the head of a large dead elephant, creating a composite MURDA, Ganapathi worshiped for good luck and removal of life obstacles. Are these Hindus insane or stupid? Satya Jayete.

Why is he so scared of condemning the attack on Rushdie that he has to bring in "Hindutva Extremists" to balance his criticism. This is merely grovelling before hardline Muslim extremists.
Second, he talks about a mob burning down of a newspaper office because of am article that nobody in the mob has read. The point is no action was taken against the mob or their instigators . We need a rule based society , not one in which everyone has to live in fear of fatwas issued by some extremist's perceived insult. I also believe the Muslims have double standards when they are quick to criticize or.mock other religions but are upset at different aspects of the prophets life. WHY INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS HAS LOST IT'S CREDIBILITY ACROSS INDIA?
Congress Party’s main problem is that they have identified Congress Party with Nehru-Gandhi family. If Nehru-Gandhi family lose importance or become very unpopular, the party too will lose. This is what is happening now. Also the Gandhi family do not want to lose the grip over the party.
Congress is vanishing from state after state. Gandhi family do not have any clue over the same. They are not strengthening the party or working to make the party relevant in those states.
Congress is now run by the fifth generation of Nehru-Gandhi family. The fifth generation of Gandhi family have decayed too much. Nehru and Indira Gandhi became powerful leaders because of their personal charisma and their merit. Rajiv Gandhi had the goodwill of Gandhi surname. But Rahul do not have the same luck. Also Rahul is a poor replica of his ancestors.
Gandhi family will not allow any leader to raise in the party, because they are afraid that they may become more powerful in the party. At the same time all these three Gandhis are too dumb to lead the party. Hence all the leaders one by one are leaving the party to greener pastures.
Just like a child don't feel the need to work as he is fed by his parents even though he is not hungry, congress is not feeling the need to work to.come into power. Hence the congress even doesn't know the ways to connect with people and request them to vote for them.
Their are many parties which have ideology similar to congress which eat into Congress votes in various States. While on the other other hand bjp has got virtual Monopoly in their ideology.
The Congress of 1980 and before was one of power and popularity. Congress attracted the best intellect then. Nepotism has pushed the party to the brink. The mediocre leadership is only increasing its decay faster. In the present situation Congress may find it difficult to retain the present strength. Congress will not be able to win even 50 seats in 2024 forget about winning 2024 elections.

The retelling of Islam’s origins is a minor theme, in a multifaceted multi-timeline multi-layered epic, occupying only 72 pages in a narration that spans 547 (as per the _Satanic Verses’_ 1st ed. I read, way back in 1989), i.e. ca. 1/8th of the whole book. Contrary to popular belief, both detractors’ & supporters’, Rushdie’s theme was not Islam at all, but the post-colonial experience of the 20th century Diaspora to which he himself belongs. If the people who are decrying the book had taken the trouble, in these 33 years, to actually read it they would have discovered how sympathetic it really is to the predicament of the immigrant (especially from the Indian subcontinent) in the UK, and how full of vitriol it is against the British system (PM Thatcher is dubbed “Mrs. Torture”, for example) for demonizing the poor hapless migrant for no fault of his: that was the “Satanic” aspect-directed against Western hypocrisy, not, in the first instance, at Koranic revelations.
Then why that specific title? Because the story of the so-called Satanic Verses, whether today judged apocryphal or not, is, nevertheless, recounted by some of Islam’s own earliest and most respected scholars; and if one came from a Muslim background, as the Rushdie family does, like all true writers, one would naturally dip into one’s own backyard for inspiration, rather than go far and extract something from, say, the Mormons or Moonies of Korea, where, too, similar (though less apt) metaphors might have been found. Yes, that’s it, while playing a peripheral role within the pages of this book, that too in two dream sequences, the story of the beginnings of Islam served Rushdie as a powerful metaphor, on 3 levels:
    1.) the Islamic calendar is the only one in world history where Time itself begins with an act of Immigration (that of the Prophet to Medina, literally, “the City”)-do you see the connection? Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis moving to London City? all three nationalities and _it_ , the cosmopolitan metropolis, not Islam, are the main characters of the novel;
    2.) What this Migrant figure does or says is often derided and misunderstood-even as the Prophet was, in the first half of his years of Prophethood-by the society surrounding him: it will contrive to make demonic what is angelic, and vice versa, and this provides Rushdie with a motif of mirrored transmutations, unparalleled since Kafka’s _Metamorphosis_ ;
3.) again, challenged on all fronts, the Migrant might momentarily succumb to social pressures, but then, quickly, revert to his former true self. That is exactly what the above-mentioned Islamic sources say happened, in the so-called Satanic Verses event, and that also is exactly how it is retold by Rushdie.
Mahound [the Prophet’s fictionalized title, after a medieval orthography, but also, methinks, as a typically Rushdiesque triple-repartee, after the Urdu word “mahout”, an elephant trainer/tamer, itself an allusion to the Prophet’s birth in what pre-Islamic Arabs called ‘the Year of the Elephant’, when an army of war elephants were prevented by divine intervention from destroying the Kaabah, thus, in my opinion, not a pejorative, but a praise-name, ‘Mahound’ presenting the Prophet as a Migrant able to dominate the rogue forces of history, overcome his adversaries]… Mahound is in fact shown, in the novel, retracting the Satanic Verses, immediately after the words had escaped his lips! Where is mockery here? Is that not what Islam’s own most revered sources say? Is he not a hero who, by the sheer strength of character, is able to dispel the most nefarious designs of the Devil? Mahound is, indeed, such a heroic personage! *The reading of **_The Satanic Verses_** did not, by one bit, diminish my own respect for the religion of Islam, esteem for Islamic civilization, nor my love of and my trust in my Muslim friends:* I still share in their joy at _Eid_ ; still partake of their _iftaar_ , and, in return, give them gifts at Christmas, as I’ve done since I was a child. It is rather these lone wolves that tarnish all of Islam, in the eyes of the world: there are many Muslim immigrants where I live, who don’t know the local language; a scene often happens at the hospital, here; because of covid restrictions, the husbands are not allowed to accompany their wives (though, of course, they keep a watchful eye from outside the window), seeing a veiled lady totally lost, in the corridors, unable to read or understand the instructions, if I happened to be there, I’d spontaneously offer to help her out. Would I _any more?_ I think not, unless clearly asked to by her male guardian, if any. Whose loss is it, when one dastardly act by a misguided youth makes us all apprehensive of having anything to do with any Muslim, even of a humane gesture?
Let us remember, *Jesus also was tempted by Satan (wasn’t he?), in the desert, for 40 days: we Christians don’t think that takes anything away from Christ’s ministry, rather we admire him all the more for he overcame Satan. Shouldn’t Muslims be doing the same, for a transitory moment of their Prophet’s, for, where Jesus took more than a month, he at once subdued the Fiend, the arch-Adversary?*
All things said and done, *offence might yet be taken* because a house of pleasure, in the novel’s said dream sequences, is shown as renaming some of its girls after the wives of the Prophet: the Mothers of the Believers. *This may be seen as an exaggerated treatment of the subplot, and, personally, I would NOT have done it!* However, there’s storytelling justification for it: it is one of Mahound’s detractors who, seeing that the Prophet was by now indomitable, decides to cash in on his growing popularity; by giving his comfort-givers these pseudonyms he hopes to boost his falling business; this should be taken as a fictive over-interpretation of the historical fact that many pagan Arabs, including members of his own clan, the Quraysh, continued to plague the Prophet’s path with every stratagem they could think up. Though they did worse (like try to assassinate him) there’s no historical evidence that they ever took this specific measure imagined by Rushdie; but can it be counter-proven that no courtesan, no fille-de-joie, ever, in 1400 years, bore homonyms to the mothers of the believers?: those are just Arabic names, borne (like all names, in all cultures) by saints and sinners alike, as prevalent before Islam as after, and to this day. Again, *I repeat, I think Rushdie’s creative imagination ran away with him at this point; but I’d rather forgive him for fanciful overdrive than seek to kill him for blasphemy: I do the same for Nikos Kazantzakis, for re-elaborating, in his **_Last Temptation of Christ_** , the Passion of our Lord-&-Savior in a very defamatory way, one contrary to all our hallowed Christian tradition* (which is not the case with _The Satanic Verses_ , in as much as the tale is originally told in Islam’s own texts).
Last but not the least, Rushdie’s _Satanic Verses_ is a magnum opus; as a towering feat of imagination, in terms of its vast scope and mind-defying structure, second, perhaps, only to Bulgakov’s _Master & Margarita_ (cited by Rushdie himself as one of his literary models). It must be read, from cover to cover, to form any opinion about it. For or against. I do know some avid high-literature buffs who couldn’t stomach Bulgakov’s masterpiece; they surely won’t Rushdie’s. That’s fine, you don’t necessarily have to uphold a work-of-art.
One is free to denounce the book, even without reading it; even discourage his friends and acquaintances from buying it. That’s okay; that, too, is what democracy is all about. It is only the incitement to and infliction of an arbitrary death sentence that seems to nullify all the progress humanity has made since the end of the Inquisition, the abolition of slavery. Fyodor Dostoevsky’s _Crime & Punishment_ concludes with a long-drawn comparison between Napoleon and Muhammad: shall we now condemn Dostoevsky to death, posthumously? *The Prophet was, and remains, one of the giants of human history, one of the major shapers of mankind’s destinies; is it possible that, in speaking of man, writers and philosophers will never ever mention this great man, his times and what is known of him?*
It is to the honor of Great Britain that, despite Rushdie’s no-holds-bar criticism of her, she nurtured and knighted him; does it honor the Ummah that they want to physically eliminate an exceptional man of letters, one of their own, who, with his pen, has given voice to their cause in the press of peoples? Sir Salman, to-date, has more than 20 books to his credit, including essays, children’s stories, and miscellaneous non-fiction; shouldn’t his authorial status be grounded on his entire output instead of just a few 10s of pages amongst many 1000s? But if one is to be put on death-row for having once thought a thought (even ‘objectionable’), any man might as well be put there because he exists, simply because he was born.

That Britain protected and honored Rushdie IS the lesson we have to take. During the convulsive fight for freedom, not a single English man or woman was hurt in India (Indira Gandhi is my authority). Society or individual must have and display the courage to face the truth and pursue values that promote flourishing of humanity. A society should be judged on the quality of its thoughts and the nobility of its deeds.
How many of us have time today to dig the truth? Are we not like fanatics when we act on imperfect or insufficient information? We pay a collective price for this attitude. Enlightenment is always knocking at the door. Whether you open the door or keep it closed is an individual's or society' choice.

Satirical Magical Realist piece regarding Salman Rushdie incident....
This is what my fellow Muslims should do when someone insults our great Nabi (SAW)?
I believe that when someone insults our Nabi (SAW) it is nothing but a test from Allah'tala.
Allah is testing us to ensure we maintain our composure, our restraint, our patience, our tolerance against those who degrade the image of our beloved Prophet (SAW).
Whenever we detect an insult, we should approach those who have no respect for our Nabi (SAW) and embrace them closely and warmly with compassion and humility.
We must do this to show how amazing Islam is - in that we persevere in the face of hate and criticism. We must love and respect those who hate our Prophet. These are the teachings. This is the Way.
When these evil people see what Muslims are, and what Islam teaches they will immediately abandon their own belief and accept Islam.
Our beautiful deen will grow faster than ever before. Alhmadulliah.
Allah will be pleased as we've passed the test and we will all enter Jannah inshAllah.
What is happening now is a failed test. After every insult our Muslim brothers and sisters go on a witch hunt against those who insult, with assaults, killings, bombings, stabbings, death threats, violence, anarchy and general mayhem. Even those who silently support these radical Muslims are failing the test. Those who were thinking of embracing Islam will now turn their backs on the greatest religion of Peace because of these extremists. This makes Allah'tala very angry and you will bring his curse and wrath upon you.
Once you fail the test there is no coming back. Jahanam (hell) is your final resting place where you shall abide therein forever.....

By Mr Tharoors own admission, the Rajasthan govt did not allow Mr Rushdie to come inspite of India being his country of birth because of the fear of mobs going berserk.

For some sort of so called blasphemy she does!! Those Owaisi brothers openly abuse Hindu gods, have you seen any kind of violence from Hindu community on that? How many murder of Muslims have been committed for supporting Akbar Uddin Owaisi? But till now there haven been 4 brutal murders commited on innocent Hindus just for supporting Nupur Sharma, by these radical Islamists.
Nupur Sharma is not a problem, the problem is the level of intolerance within the muslim community that can't even handle the basic criticism on their religion wheather it is Nupur or Salamn.
