Lightweight Rota Vicentina 2020 thru-hike gear list - What's in my pack?

- I completed 160 miles of the Rota Vicentina thru-hike in 7 days with my lightweight gear list! LINKS AND REVIEWS BELOW!
My lightweight thru-hike gear list was really minimal, I decided that packing light would enable me to hike fast, wild camp stealthily and help me enjoy the trail how I wanted. In this video, I'll show you what's in my pack and what my thru hiking gear list comprises of. While out on the trail I discovered what worked and what didn't.
Hiking the Rota Vicentina really helped me to further dial in my gear loadout for the PCT thru-hike which I'll hike later in 2020. And, while it's not quite in the ultralight category, at 14.2 lbs (6.4kg) base weight, it's a really lightweight pack.
La Rota Vicentina, the most beautiful way to explore the Portuguese coast.
To mark the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 I flew to Portugal to hike the Rota Vicentina historical way and fisherman's trail from Santiago do Cacém to the Lighthouse of Cabo de São Vicente (Farol do Cabo de São Vicente) from December to January.
Starting in Lisbon to prepare, I then took a coach to Santiago do Cacém on the 26th of December 2019 and began my hike which in total would span more than 160 miles over the course of 7 days of hiking, wild camping, eating, sleeping and enjoying sunrises and sunsets every single day.

Such a dialled in yet sensible set up. Thanks for the RV vids by the way. My favourite track hike vid for ages.
Great kit list. Thanks!
Great loadout, well done. Just a little ‘heads up’ on your food bag. You’re using a standard Lolsak which isn’t odour-proof. For your PCT ensure you pick up the OP (odour proof version) Loksak which is 12 inches high for the large version which is what most hikers use. This will ensure your food odours are contained inside of your food bag. Very envious of your PCT thru hike; just returned from Yosemite and it’s stunning! Best of luck, stay safe on the trail.
Cheers Tom! I believe I got the set which includes the one you mention above. It would’ve been too large for this trip so I took this one. Thanks for watching. More to come.
Great video mate, some great tips & insights for the community, your investment in the outdoors, yourself & your experiences is paying off pal!
Thanks so much mate!
Awesome video man! Thanks for sharing
Sick mate! Loved that awesome bit of gear there. I’m looking to switch my sleeping bag out to a quilt then I’m down to where I want to be with all my gear. Looks like the RV has really helped you dial it in even more. 🤙
Great job. Inspiring. Infectious enthusiasm.
Thank you.
Awesome video! I also pack pretty minimal. Not for weight reasons though. Excited to see your new adventures
Thanks Yako Bako!
Awesome gear breakdown and brilliant vid! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Lovely gear to. You are a bit harsh on yourself, that’s ultralight weight wise mate. It’s all a philosophy anyway right 😉 Worth a few extra bits for the comfort sometimes for sure. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures!!
Ahh thanks dude! Haha yeah I’ve been under the impression that UL is sub 10lbs. Would like to try and get there at some point. But would mean sacrificing a stove, my NeoAir and a pole I reckon haha.
The Trail Hunter The whole sub 10 pound thing is dead in my eyes mate. Probably one of my fav articles on it is this one by the legend that is Andrew Skurka - andrewskurka.com/is-lightweight-backpacking-label-dead/
Great video. Now the trail it on my list !!!!! Thank you !
Thank you! Enjoy the RV it’s amazing.
Nice video. Thanks. Did you consider doing the trail South to North?
Nice. Good luck on the PCT.
Thanks mate!
Portugal Trail!!! thats cool
Great vid. Question for ya. Do order the Zpacks and Catabatic from the USA and just “stomach” the import duty? Or is
there another way...?
Great vid bro 👊
Awesome video. How were the altra lone peaks? Did they let in lots of sand? I’m heading out to do this trail at the end of October and have the Lanshan 2 tent. I may look at up grading my pack (The Osprey is about 4lbs), but worried about waking with a frameless pack and if it will be uncomfortable. Atom packs look fab.
The Altras were brilliant and I wore gaiters so the sand wasn’t really an issue unless sliding down a dune on the coast haha. Only had to empty my shoes once or twice. My pack has a removable carbon fibre frame which helps distribute the weight to the belt. I find it really comfortable, but you need to pack it properly. Thanks for always watching!!
Phrase book, translation apps, nunchucks? I’m considering the SDW this year and have little/no idea of what to take but one thing’s for sure, i’ll be taking a phrasebook and Nunchucks, just for the Eastbourne bit!
Hahaha fantastic. You’ll need them 😛
Great video. Assume you flew out to Portugal, did you have to check-in your stove, poles and tent pegs to the hold?
I checked in my stove poles and pegs yes. No problems. Went to Decalthlon in Lisbon to buy more gas. Thanks for watching. 👍👍
Hi Russell. Nice, concise, helpful post-hike gear breakdown. Thanks. The Rota Vicenta looks appealing and I'd like your opinion on what section (s) would be good if I had only 5 or 6 days and would probably do 12-15 miles per day. So, let's say 60-90 miles. And I guess there's an inland option as well as a coastal option? Do you have a recommendation for a 60 to 90 mile jaunt? Thanks!
Hi Jeff! Thanks very much and glad you enjoyed it. Ahh you could do from Vila Nova Milfontes to Aljezur. You’ll have the coast, some inland and historical towns and also the irrigation canal from Odeceixe is amazing in the morning! Not sure how many miles that is. Maybe 80-something?
@@thetrailhunter4469 I will check this out. Thanks, Russell! I know you said this is one of the best hikes you've ever done, so I'm taking your word for it. FYI, on New Year's Eve I was freezing my butt off on the Appalachian Trail in Maryland with gear that was not warm enough for the 15-degree Fahrenheit wind chill temperatures. So we had somewhat contrasting experiences lol.
Really interested in your Atom Packs pack. Looking to order one, so interested in what height you are and what torso size you ordered? Cheers.
Yeah they’re nice packs. I’m 5,7 and an 18” torso. So their medium packs were spot on. 🤙 thanks for watching.
The Trail Hunter thanks! I figured we would be similar - I am 5’8’’! Thanks for your help; happy trails.
Happy trails dude!
Interesting gear load out mate, haven't seen you use trekking poles much before, did they help on this one?
Thanks mate. Yeah definitely helped me do the miles on the sand. Highly recommend.
Glad your bits were protected m8 💅🏻
Gotta keep em safe mate. Haha 😂
When is your PCT start date?
What's the total capacity of your pack? Great video man!
The main compartment is about 38L due to the added 2 inches on mine. Then each side pocket is 5L. Not sure the capacity of the front pocket as it’s made of mesh. Can always email Atom Packs for that info. 👍
@@thetrailhunter4469 top man!
Any chance you could put this kit list together on Lighterpack or a similar gear load-out site?
Definitely. I set up a LP page ages ago but haven’t got round to filling it out yet. Got some scales especially for it.
You rock 👍
And roll haha cheers mate.
Nice video, what rain jacket is that?
It’s a Dare 2B but unsure of the name of it. I’ll try and find out.
Also thank you!
What did you do with a wet tent? You have next to your down sleeping bag
Good Q. When the tent is soaking wet I’d pack it at the top of the bag but on top of the pack liner. Then when dry I’d put it back where I usually put it. If it’s just a wee bit damp I could shake it off and the DCF stuff sack it came with stopped the moisture leaking onto anything else. 👍
nice setup, replace ur powerbank if u had it for ages, its probably not even close to 8000 mAh by now then
Hha thanks. I already did before making this video. But included the 13,400 as that’s what I took with me 👍
Hi! What type of jacket are you wearing? I'm trying to decide on a good quality rain jacket. Thanks
It’s a Dare2B jacket although I’m unsure what model it is. I’ll have to have a look around and get back to you.

Did you travel out in the shorts?
Haha no. I had a proper change of clothes and stuff in a day pack which I left in Lisbon with my Airbnb host.
The Trail Hunter : trying to get through immigration in running shorts could be an interesting experience.
@Trailhunter can you try @challengear.syndicate for your video review
How much did this setup cost you?
I believe I mention in the video. Somewhere between 2 and 3,000 GBP. Bare in mind, it’s taken me 5 years to get there. 👍
@@thetrailhunter4469 I gasped when I saw that. It isn't neccessary to always buy the most expensive kit. For example the trowel is £30, you can buy a hard plastic one (just as light) for less than £3. No wonder I have more gear for a fraction of the price.
The main thing I’ve added to my gear since the RV is a Garmin InReach Mini. It’s expensive but since I’m mainly a solo hiker, often remote; for me it’s worth it for the SOS. Also the weather forecasts and tracking. On the filter switched from Sawyer Squeeze to a Versa Flow. The Atom pack is tempting; I’m currently looking at a ZPacks Arc Haul Zip 64L; maybe overkill now with my base weight around 7kg. Is the Atom pack comfortable on your back without the arc (like ZPacks/Osprey)? Many thanks
Hey Patrick. Yeah I’ve got a GPS Map 66i for winter hiking and I’ll be taking an InReach Mini for the PCT. My pack is pretty light, it has a foam pad on the back panel and I pack it in such a way that it’s comfortable I find the arc on those packs unnecessary. But that’s just me. Cheers mate! Hope you enjoyed the RV too!
The RV was amazing. The best European trail so far has been the Kungsleden in Sweden. Next year I'm planning the AZT starting Feb/Mar. The AT or PCT in 2022. So I'll be looking forward to your PCT videos
Sorry, just to save you making a decision you might regret...
An Arc Haul Zip with a 7kg base weight is actually underkill! ZPacks are generally considered to over-rate their carrying capacities. Personally I roll with what they used to say about their Arc packs - you need to have a base weight of 10lb or under (4.5kg) for these to be comfortable!
Of course it also depends on your total pack weight - I don't find the Arc bags comfortable for extended periods much over 26lb (12kg) fully-loaded.
The other thing to say is that for UL loads (under 4.5kg BW) 64L is ridiculously huge! OK if you have a bear can or large volume winter gear, but not for most 3 season use. Even for something like the PCT the Arc Blast at 55L is more than you need volume-wise with a dialled-in UL kit.
If your BW is going to stay higher than 4.5kg I would look at ULA or Gossamer Gear or, indeed, one of the framed offerings from Atom Packs. And even then I wouldn't advise a BW over 6kg.
First!
Weeeeeyyyy
Beer on the PCT? Since when? ;-)
Phone is bw you delinquient!
😊
Haha you can add the weight on
@@thetrailhunter4469 It is a serious CRIME.
Bury it with biodegrade toilet roll or wipes. Unscented. I aint carrying my poo around.
Only internally ha ha.
