    This made me feel a lot better about carrying my Kelty Salida tent and sleeping bag. I’m new to backpacking and it just seems wasteful to toss out perfectly good gear when that tent has been working for me for five years, in order to save a pound or two.

    • @ericvongleich4549
      @ericvongleich4549 4 роки тому +1

      A pound or two on your back makes you stronger. Carry the gear you own, you love. If you bought it, use it. the perfect gear setup is bullshit. If you're strong at heart and mind, you are physically strong. not to quote nike, but, "just Do it"

  • @gregparrott
    @gregparrott 4 роки тому +5

    Pretty down-to-earth. I like the no nonsense selection of items - larger more comfortable tent, larger pack with room to spare, nothing special in the clothing (although it seemed pretty minimal for the northern CDT and PCT trails)

  • @TheBMC113
    @TheBMC113 5 років тому +28

    I like the philosophy of "the balance between keeping the weight low and maintaining a certain level of comfort". Interesting how different people have their uncomfortable moments...the whole using my finger to apply suave for butt chafe is mortifying, but grabbing any old soap and rubbing off the first micro-layer to get to "new" soap is no problem.

    • @mtadams2009
      @mtadams2009 Рік тому

      I think you can be UL and still have the same level of comfort. The big difference is the expense. For example I have a Tiger Wall tent and also a Duplex. Both tents are very nice for one person, the Duplex is just way lighter but also much more expensive. Same with my 20 degree guilt, plenty warm but way more money that his sleeping bag. I am older, in my 60s and love long distance backpacking but I need my pack super light to make up for my older body which also has lots of worn parts from skiing, mountain biking and rock climbing to much. Going UL has been a game changer for me. We all use what we need. I find it very interesting what people carry and also what they eat. I am always learning. I like his buff idea. I also like the iPod idea. I need to get mine back out. Thanks so much for that one.

    Congrats man! What weight/temp bag did you use and did you find it sufficient? How about snow pack in any areas? Did you ever feel the need for any additional snow gear/insulation? I know 2017 Wyoming snow pack was fairly high last year and I wondered if that was affecting some early hikers. Although I'd rather have it on the ground than falling from the sky!
