  • Through The Ordinary Door: Shields Tavern | Colonial Williamsburg (2024) Full Tavern Exploration
Amidst the hustle and bustle of Colonial Williamsburg's historic area, an unplanned late lunch led us to a hidden gem we had long desired to explore: Shields Tavern.
Nestled along the iconic Duke of Gloucester Street, Shields Tavern's simple outdoor concessions-style food menu surprised us. Without hesitation, we decided to grab a quick meal and then we would find a spot to dine outside
    somewhere in the city.
What followed was an extraordinary adventure-a journey beyond the threshold of this historic tavern, transporting us back to an era of tall tankards, warm hearths, candle-flickering parlors, and long wooden tables. A rustic public house once bustling with cider and ale-sipping, revelrous patrons during colonial times.
Though devoid of 18th-century regulars, savory aromas wafting from the kitchen, tavern workers, and the melodic tunes of period musicians who perform inside Shields Tavern when fully operational…our impromptu afternoon meal led us into uncharted territory we had only dreamed of navigating up to this point.
In the latest Quest Capsule, join us as we explore the floors and many rooms of this fascinating 18th-century tavern. An interlude for savoring some simple, flavorful food selections befitting the environment we fortuitously stumbled upon, before setting out again to continue the unplanned excursion.
With no time to don our finest attire or dust off powdered wigs, we dressed up our fromage feast burger and entered Shields Tavern, where the past meets the present in an extraordinary melding of food, history, and exploration.

My husband and I stayed at one of the colonial homes (Moore House) for our honeymoon. I lost him too soon five years ago, but I treasure every memory. I live in Williamsburg now and smile whenever I walk past Moore House.

That is an amazing honeymoon memory and one to treasure forever. You and his story together is now etched into the history of Williamsburg and will eternally live forever. Thank you for your comment & sharing! Keep smiling! 🙂🎩

What a wonderful and treasured memory. My husband and I stayed in Williamsburg for our honeymoon also. I too have been widowed too soon, going on three years but remember fondly visiting the shops of the merchants and touring. We were married in 1981 and had our picture taken in front of one of the buildings. I went back in 2022 and had my picture taken alone. It was a monumental milestone. Thank you for sharing .

What a treasured surprise. I really enjoy the inside of the buildings. The research imto form and color being historically produced. Such another world. Splendid.

My first trip to Colonial Williamsburg was in 1985 with my beautiful wife at the time. We were lodged in the Chiswell Bucktrout House on Francis Street. Our first breakfast in the historic area, Shields Tavern. Now a thirty two year member of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, I will always remember that meal.

I have had the pleasure of Shield's Tavern once in my lifetime. It was for my 30th birthday with my mother. The food was delicious and it was almost like a trip back in time. My ancestor Gabriel Maupin operatored the Market Square Tavern which is now open for overnights. Someday!!

My husband and I just viewed your amazing presentation of Shields Tavern. We just completed reservations to Williamsburg for this fall where we will be staying, for the first time, in one of the colonial homes for a couple of nights. I am super excited and can't wait for our 4th visit to this wonderful place. Thank you for all the excellent videos.

Hi, I would love to stay in a Tavern or Inn in Williamsburg. How is the best way to book a few days and stay in Colonial Williamsburg, in one of the Taverns or Inns?

Make Reservations during the Holidays ❣️
    Y’all won’t be disappointed ❣️
I think Shield’s has the best choices as I’ve dined in all of them and due to either preferences or allergies, Shield’s is My Go Too❣️❣️❣️💯
By the way the pictures are called” Macaroni Portraits.
Furthermore, do the multiple Ghost Tours/Walks, they tell A Lot of History of the Owners/ Families of the properties. Pretty accurate some of the storytellers.

Makes me sad they pretty much closed and became a turkey leg and burger place. My husband and I went there 9 years ago, and it was our favorite tavern out of all the others. It was more affordable and had this amazing crayfish soup that we couldn't get enough of.
Not surprised hardly anyone has been to it, judging by the comments. Everyone pays more attention to King's Arms and Chownings.

@@jessblackproductions Hi Jess. This was only a quick concessions style menu they had set up outside during holidays, the tavern wasn’t open during this video, just for seating. They are open now for lunch and from what i understand their full menu. Not sure if they offer the crayfish soup but sounds good.🎩

@QuestCapsule Glad that is the case. I haven't been since that trip 9 years ago. It was for my husband's and my honeymoon and it was the 1st and only time I had been. We hope to go next year for our anniversary, and we keep thinking about Shields, lol. The soup made us buy the cookbook.

HI Patti, I wasn't entirely sure who the pictures were of? I'm pretty sure they weren't the owners though. If I find out I will let you know! The text underneath them was a little too small to make out. Thanks for watching! 🎩

haven’t dined there since December 2006, and that was in the candlelit cellar. I always made sure to check out the other rooms when we were there as they are so interesting. During the Christmas holidays years ago, we enjoyed breakfast there as well. Sure miss it not being open on a regular basis. Last I knew, only open to large gatherings. Glad you got to explore its wonderful interior…now, please pass the turkey leg!😁
